Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon
The Jesuit priest and poet Gerard Manley Hopkins
in his poem The Wreck of the Deutschland wrote of
the tragic loss of life of five Franciscan nuns on a sunken ship called the
Deutschland. At the end of his poem he sees the life that can come from
death, the hope that can come from despair. So he writes, “Let him
(Jesus) Easter in us, be a dayspring to the dimness of us, be a crimson-
cresseted East.” He uses Easter as a verb, as an action. Instead of giv-
ing into despair, the hope is for Jesus to Easter in us. May Easter be the
verb of your lives leading you to Resurrection. Happy Easter!
¡Felices Pascuas!
