Simbang Gabi: 9-Day Christmas Novena of Masses

Simbang Gabi continues until December 23 in preparation for the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Masses are held in English and hymns are sung in both English and Tagalog. A light reception follows after each Mass.

The Advent Confessions at Corpus Christi is

scheduled on Tuesday, December 19 at

7:00 pm. There will be a number of priests

available for confessions. This is a good

opportunity to go to confession in

preparation for Christmas.

We appeal to kindhearted parishioners to help in the Church cleaning during the Christmas break. Church cleaning will be on Thursday, December 21 and the following Thursday, December 28, at 8:45 am for about an hour. Corpus Christi School Parents looking for participation hours, this is a good opportunity to get them.

There are still 227 envelope box sets left unclaimed. The

envelope box sets will remain in the main vestibule of the church until February 2018. After which, all unclaimed envelope box sets will be re-issued to parishioners who will request for them.

If you wish to have a 2018 envelope box, please call or drop by the parish office.

All donations should be received by the parish office on or before December 31, 2017 in order to qualify for the 2017 Income Tax Receipt.

Please notify the parish office of any change of address in order to reflect the correct one in the Official Tax Receipt for 2017.

Pro-life Mass and Prayer Vigil

Parenting Ministry: Living Through Grief

Parenting Ministry: Making Sense of Anxiety in Children and Youth

Dr. Gordon Neufeld sheds light on the problem of the escalating level of anxiety in our children and paves the way for natural interventions to get to the root causes as opposed to just managing symptoms. Although the focus is on children, the material will benefit anyone suffering from anxiety. World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2018

Pope Francis, in his message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, urges us to respond with love and to encounter our Lord Jesus Christ whenever a stranger knocks at our door. He says: "This is a great responsibility, [whom we], are called to respond to the many challenges of contemporary migration with generosity, promptness, wisdom and foresight, each according to their own abilities. Our shared response may be articulated by four verbs: to welcome, to protect, to promote, and to integrate." Stewardship Reflections

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all

circumstances; for this is the will of God

in Christ Jesus for you”

- 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16 -18

This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps

build empathy for others in similar situations.

3rd Sunday of Advent

Today we celebrate Gaudete (meaning Joy) Sunday. So, what happens on this Sunday? On the one Sunday of

Advent we are allowed to have flowers in the sanctuary and the priest can wear rose colored vestments – both of

these symbolize and convey the joy that we should have as children of God and members of the Church. The

word itself – Gaudete – is inserted into the Third Sunday of Advent as it harkens back to a time when Advent

was much more of a season of sacrifice – more in the line of preparation than reparation (as we hear and live in

Lent). People would make sacrifices during this season to cultivate the spiritual hunger to “see the Lord” on the

day of his birth. The rose color is to help us understand that our sacrifices (and even penitential practices)

should be founded on and flowing from “joy” but a very specific kind of joy. This is not the joy of the animal

with satiated senses (our stomachs full, good job, health and so on). These are good but they are ephemeral

(short-lived) in nature. They are subject to change; the joy we celebrate today is founded upon the truth that we

are God’s children and this does not change. This should give direction to our whole life. In fact, we get to “that

place” in our spiritual lives this joy we realize is not incompatible with suffering (although suffering never feels

good) because the Lord is with us in our suffering. This joy is only incompatible with sin. On this day let us

give thanks to the Lord and thank him for the joy that he has given to us in Jesus Christ.

This Tuesday we are going to hold our Advent Penitential Service. There will be a total of 5 priests (1

speaking in Cantonese) available to hear confessions, to be the instruments of the Lord in helping people

prepare the way for the Lord. Avail yourselves of this sacrament: Tuesday 7:00pm here at Corpus Christi. There

is also a poster with all Penitential Service that will take place in the East Deanery.

This is a reminder for people who sit in the back pews – they are primarily for families with young

children and seniors. You can see there are signs on the end of the pews indicating which ones are reserved for

these two groups. Please respect these and sit closer to the front or at least beyond the signs. Some young

families have found it difficult to find adequate seating because these pews are crowded with people who could

move forward.

We only have one week remaining – by next week we will be on the verge of celebrating another

Christmas. Really try – make the effort – to spend time praying, reflecting on your blessings, on reasons to be

thankful. In doing so you will come closer to understanding the real meaning of the time of year.

今天我們慶祝喜樂主日，但今天將有甚麼事情發生?在這唯一可以在祭台擺置花卉的將臨

期主日，主祭神父將會穿上玫瑰紅色的祭衣，表示身為上主的子民及教會的一份子,我們

樂於顯示我們的喜樂。喜樂被放在將臨期第三主日，可追溯至古時把將臨期視為犧牲的

時期，著重補贖多於準備(正如我們渡過四旬期一般) ，人們會在這時期作出犧牲，喚起

在耶穌誕生之日看到主的渴望。玫瑰紅色有助我們明白，我們的犧牲是建基於喜樂，一

種特有的喜樂,這並不是動物肉體上的歡愉(例如:飽肚、優差、身體安康等等)。上述各種

雖是不錯，但只是短暫的，而且是會轉變的。我們今日所慶祝的喜樂,是基於人類是天主

的子女。這是不變的，而且會提點我們人生的方向。事實上，我們在靈性上到達那境界，

這喜樂並非不能與痛苦共存(雖然痛苦令人不安) ，因為在我們受苦時，上主是與我們同

在的。但這喜樂只是與罪衍不可共存。在將臨期第三主日，就讓我們感謝上主，感謝祂

在耶穌督內賜給我們的喜樂。

在星期二,本堂將安排修和聖事,屆時將有五神父(包括一位能以粵語溝通的神父) ，作為基

督的工具，來聽信友辦告解,使我們能為迎接基督作準備。信友請盡量參與星期二(12 月

19 日) 晚上 7 時在本堂的修和聖事。至於溫東鐸區其他堂區的修和聖事時間表，教友可

參閲教堂正門的告示板。

我想提醒大家，教堂後面幾行座椅主要是供長者及携同小孩的家庭使用。座位兩旁已有

告示列明。不少攜家眷的都因這幾行被佔用很難找到座位。

尚有一星期，我們將會慶祝聖誕，各信友應盡量多作禱告，反思已獲的恩寵, 感謝上主。

倘能把上述幾點付諸實行，你將容易感受到聖誕的真正意義。

The Third Week of Advent

Gaudete Week

Our week begins with “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. It comes from the first word of the Entrance antiphon on Sunday. The spirit of joy that begins this week comes from the words of Paul, “The Lord is near.” This joyful spirit is marked by the third candle of our Advent wreath, which is rose colored, and the rose colored vestments often used at the Eucharist.

The second part of Advent begins on December 17th each year. For the last eight days before Christmas, the plan of the readings changes. The first readings are still from the prophesies, but now the gospels are from the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke. We read the stories of faithful women and men who prepared the way for our salvation. We enter into the story of how Jesus' life began. These stories are filled with hints of what his life will mean for us. Faith and generosity overcome impossibility. Poverty and persecution reveal glory.

Preparing our Hearts and asking for Grace

We prepare this week by feeling the joy. We move through this week feeling a part of the waiting world that rejoices because our longing has prepared us to believe the reign of God is close at hand. And so we consciously ask:

Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope which his presence will bestow.

Each morning this week, in that brief moment we are becoming accustomed to, we want to light a third inner candle. Three candles, going from expectation, to longing, to joy. They represent our inner preparation, or inner perspective. In this world of “conflict and division,” “greed and lust for power,” we begin each day this week with a sense of liberating joy. Perhaps we can pause, breathe deeply and say,

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”

Each day this week, we will continue to go through our everyday life, but we will experience the difference our faith can bring to it. We are confident that the grace we ask for will be given us. We will encounter sin - in our own hearts and in our experience of the sin of the world. We can pause in those moments, and feel the joy of the words,

“You are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

We may experience the Light shining into dark places of our lives and showing us patterns of sinfulness, and inviting us to experience God's mercy and healing. Perhaps we wish to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilation this week. We may want to make gestures of reconciliation with a loved one, relative, friend or associate. With more light and joy, it is easier to say, “I'm sorry; let's begin again.”

Each night this week we want to pause in gratitude. Whatever the day has brought, no matter how busy it has been, we can stop, before we fall asleep, to give thanks for a little more light, a little more freedom to walk by that light, in joy.

Our celebration of the coming of our Savior in history, is opening us up to experience his coming to us this year, and preparing us to await his coming in Glory.

Come, Lord Jesus. Come and visit your people. We await your coming. Come, O Lord.
