Christ is risen! This opening sentence from the celebration of The Holy Eucharist in our Book of Common Prayer is my favorite. We get to begin using this opening sentence on Easter Day and continue to pro- claim this good news for the next 50 days of the Easter Season. There are more stories and songs about the resurrection of Jesus Christ than we are able to squeeze into one Sunday, and so we give ourselves seven Sundays to celebrate! Sunday at the 10:30 liturgy we had a conspicuous moment of celebration. The children of St. Pe- ter’s who led us in being generous through the Lenten Baby Food Drive, showed up to bring these gifts forward during the Offertory. There was a literal traffic jam in the center aisle as wag- ons and boxes and bags of diapers and food kept on coming. (There were still more boxes in the narthex because there were not enough kiddos to carry it all!) With Easter lilies in front of the altar there were also not many places to put all of your donations without interfering with the congregation coming forward to receive Holy Communion. So, Marie and I had the joy of coming down from behind the altar to help the ushers and children find places on the carpet to park the wagons and stack the boxes and bags out of the way. Having just preached a sermon about things that seem too good to be true and living more like St. Thomas who thrust his hands and his heart into his doubts, it seemed like the children of St. Peter’s had just given us a ‘parable’ to show in 3-dimensional terms what we are able to do together in Christ’s name. I exclaimed to the congregation, “Well, this seems a little too good to be true!” And then Marie offered an extemporaneous prayer of thanksgiving on behalf of us all. When we come together in Christ’s name to worship, the risen Christ is among us (just as he promised). When we go forth out into the world in Christ’s name to love and serve, the risen Christ is also among us (just as he promised). It is still a mystery to me how this happens exactly, but I have no doubt because I have seen this truth with my own eyes, I have heard this truth with my own ears, and I have touched this truth with my own hands. We should call Thomas ‘Believing Thomas’ rather than ‘Doubting Thomas.’ Why? Because although he had doubts (like the rest of the disciples), he actively engaged his doubts to motivate his actions. He knew what it would take for him to get on board, and he did it! It is because of my doubts that I pay attention, just like St. Thomas. During this season of Easter, I hope you will use your doubts productively to take action and do something about it. Open your eyes, ears, and hands in order to pay attention to the ‘parables’ around us which point to new life. In this newsletter, there are a variety of opportunities to worship, fellowship, learn, and serve in Christ’s name. I hope you will find an opportunity to engage in one of these. Do something with your doubts besides just clinging to them, for there is new life to be experienced this Easter—that is the truth we proclaim when we say, Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

    Dear People of St. Peters,

    Alleluia! Christ is risen!

This opening sentence from the celebration of The Holy Eucharist in our Book of Common Prayer

is my favorite. We get to begin using this opening sentence on Easter Day and continue to pro-

claim this good news for the next 50 days of the Easter Season. There are more stories and

songs about the resurrection of Jesus Christ than we are able to squeeze into one Sunday, and

so we give ourselves seven Sundays to celebrate!

Sunday at the 10:30 liturgy we had a conspicuous moment of celebration. The children of St. Pe-

ter’s who led us in being generous through the Lenten Baby Food Drive, showed up to bring

these gifts forward during the Offertory. There was a literal traffic jam in the center aisle as wag-

ons and boxes and bags of diapers and food kept on coming. (There were still more boxes in the

narthex because there were not enough kiddos to carry it all!)

With Easter lilies in front of the altar there were also not many places to put all of your donations

without interfering with the congregation coming forward to receive Holy Communion. So, Marie

and I had the joy of coming down from behind the altar to help the ushers and children find places

on the carpet to park the wagons and stack the boxes and bags out of the way.

Having just preached a sermon about things that seem too good to be true and living more like St.

Thomas who thrust his hands and his heart into his doubts, it seemed like the children of St.

Peter’s had just given us a ‘parable’ to show in 3-dimensional terms what we are able to do

together in Christ’s name. I exclaimed to the congregation, “Well, this seems a little too good to

be true!” And then Marie offered an extemporaneous prayer of thanksgiving on behalf of us all.

When we come together in Christ’s name to worship, the risen Christ is among us (just as he

promised). When we go forth out into the world in Christ’s name to love and serve, the risen

Christ is also among us (just as he promised). It is still a mystery to me how this happens exactly,

but I have no doubt because I have seen this truth with my own eyes, I have heard this truth with

my own ears, and I have touched this truth with my own hands.

We should call Thomas ‘Believing Thomas’ rather than ‘Doubting Thomas.’ Why? Because

although he had doubts (like the rest of the disciples), he actively engaged his doubts to motivate

his actions. He knew what it would take for him to get on board, and he did it!

It is because of my doubts that I pay attention, just like St. Thomas. During this season of Easter,

I hope you will use your doubts productively to take action and do something about it. Open your

eyes, ears, and hands in order to pay attention to the ‘parables’ around us which point to new life.

In this newsletter, there are a variety of opportunities to worship, fellowship, learn, and serve in

Christ’s name. I hope you will find an opportunity to engage in one of these. Do something with

your doubts besides just clinging to them, for there is new life to be experienced this Easter—that

is the truth we proclaim when we say, Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

    PREPARE YE!

    May 15-18, 2019

    7:30 p.m.

St. Peter’s Players is proud to present the Stephen Schwartz Musical GOD-SPELL…the timeless story of love and devotion based on the Gospel According to Saint

Matthew. This is a show that opened on Broadway in 1971 and became a 1973 motion picture, we are proud to present our version of the 2011/2012 Broadway Revival.

GODSPELL follows a small community of city residents who come together to help Jesus Christ teach different parables through various games, stories, and comedy. Within this story comes a wide variety of music – pop to Vaudeville and plenty in between. GODSPELL features classics like “Day by Day”, “Save the People,” “Light of the World,” and now “Beautiful City.” Concluding with a haunting portrayal of the Last Supper and Crucifixion, the community is left to carry on Jesus' messages of kindness, tolerance and love (synopsis in part courtesy of Music Theatre International).

The St. Peter’s Players are honored to present this as the conclusion of our nineteenth season of ministry. As always, we offer free admission but accept donations.

    Welcome & Discovery Class

    June 4-5

Sign-up for our next Welcome & Discovery Class if you would like to understand more about worship, faith and service in the Anglican Tradition, the Episcopal Church, and at St. Peter’s.

We will begin with dinner on Tuesday evening, and have a relaxed time of learning more about worship and sacraments, while also tracing the outlines of Christian faith as we have received it through the Bible and the Christian Tradition. Fr. Furman will give particular attention to the “lenses” through which Anglicans and Episcopalians see. The class resumes on Wednesday evening with coffee and fruit and cheese. There is no obligation or commitment associated with this class. Fr. Furman will be teaching the class and all are wel-come. You may sign-up by calling the parish office at 268-7280 or by sending an email to [email protected].

    Deadline: Sunday, June 2.

Wine & Cheese Reception If you are a new member or visitor to St. Peter’s, you are invited to attend our Wine & Cheese Reception Thursday, May 23rd at 6:30 p.m. Please call the office if you have any questions.

If you get a minute (and can catch her between responsibilities) I hope you will thank Jan Rhodes for all the many ministries she

makes happen around St. Peter’s. As our children’s ministries coordinator, she makes sure all the special events like Lenten

Gardens, Advent Wreaths, Easter Egg Hunts, and Vacation Bible School happen for our youngest members and their families.

She also helps supply and support the Sunday School teachers, and provides extra formation times like the Family Stations of

the Cross, Kanuga Parish Weekend, and the St. Nicholas Sunday program. In addition, Jan has been working closely with Craig

Piepho to start and supervise our children’s choir, which has been busy singing several times this Lenten season. She supports

SPY programs and will be going on our Ecuador mission team this summer, and she has been shepherding a Bible Study for

women that has been steadily growing this year. In her spare time, she has been in both the fall and spring productions for St.

Peter’s Players, and also serves as a chalice bearer. Please stop and give Jan a thank you next time you see her, for her hard

work on behalf of these many ministries at St. Peter’s. You can see some of the fruits of her ministry in these accompanying pho-

tos of children’s activities around Easter. If you ever want to volunteer or help out in any way, give Jan a call at the church office!

Thankyou to everyone who brought candy to help fill the Easter eggs. As

you can see, the children had a wonderful time finding the eggs and en-

    joying a sumptuous Easter brunch.
