2 v 18th Anniversary Season

A special message from Nancy’s artistby Robin Preiss Glasser, illustrator of the Fancy Nancy book series

“Who is Fancy Nancy based on?” is the first question everyone asks Jane O’Connor, the author of the Fancy Nancy books, and me.

Jane tells this story: When she was a little girl, her grandma and aunt would come for Sunday dinner, and Jane would clomp in wearing her mom’s high heels, tutu, and long red cape and she felt she was thus properly attired (that’s a fancy word for dressed) to receive her guests. Jane says that even though she grew up to be an understated (which is fancy for plain) adult, Nancy is based on her as a child.

Here’s my story: When I received the manuscript for the first Fancy Nancy book, I saw that Jane had written some directions in the margin of the first page: “Illustrator to draw bedroom with canopy bed handmade from a mop, broom, and sheet.” This note made me realize immediately that Nancy wasn’t a fancy princess-y girl, but sort of a young Martha Stewart -- a DIY child, like I had been! When I was a child my favorite doll was a hot pink-haired troll for whom I made a sparkly tutu and a troll mansion out of shoe boxes. Nancy was DIY me! So I based the look of the character on my favorite doll, and if you ask my husband, he’ll tell you, like Nancy, I am a drama queen too!

Once that first book came out, Jane and I went on a national tour together, and little girls came to our book signings wearing tiaras, tutus, butterfly wings, and every other manner of dress-up clothes. Jane and I were amazed to find that there was a bit of Fancy Nancy in a whole lot of other girls, too!

Ten years, 70 books, plus dolls, toys and mobile apps later, and then Vital Theater in New York created the enchanting musical you will see today. We never imagined that Nancy would come alive to sing and dance her way into our hearts across a live stage!

This show brings my husband, Robert Berman (the Executive Producer of this show) and me full circle. Both of us have always been “stage people.” When we discovered Chance Theater, we experienced the youthful passion and talent here that is palpable. It is the integration of so many of our pleasures to be able to bring, with the Chance, Fancy Nancy to our town.

One of my earliest memories is going to see a children’s theater group with my three sisters in Poughkeepsie, New York, where we grew up. At each show, an elf-like hostess named Pockets would prepare us for the stories we were going to watch by pulling pertinent items from the many pockets on the front of her costume. Sometimes, by mistake, she would pull out a rubber chicken! It was fun and it was magical. This was the beginning of my enchantment with live theater.

We hope you and your children feel the magic and impact of live theater today and enjoy this splendiferous (that’s a fancy word for wonderful) production along with us.

Alex Bueno (Associate Director) is thrilled to be a part of this wonderful musical. She is so grateful to Kelly Todd for allowing her to partake in such a fun project. This is definitely a stretch from directing The Eight:

Reindeer Monologues. While he was up there, he attended the Seattle Film Institute where he received a Filmmaking Certificate. Marc has been a resident artist since June 2008.

2016 Season v 11

THIS SUMMER

In an empty theater, on a bare stage, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. For 17 dancers, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. It’s what they’ve worked forwith every drop of sweat, every hour of training, every day of their lives. It’s the one opportunity to do what they’ve always dreamedto have the chance to dance.

This is A Chorus Line, the musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all on the line. Funny and exhilarating, yet raw and personal at its core, we are going to bring new life to this groundbreaking show that lifted the veil on the anonymous faces behind the stars, and uncovered a heartrending truth about what drives artists yesterday and today.
