Transcript of Parents Magazine Fall 2011
If you research the student housing market in Tucson, AZ you
properties are very similar with only slight differences. Of course, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some properties include all utilities in the rent. Some do not. Some are luxurious (one even has a real mini movie theater). Some are miles away. Some are just steps away from the campus. Some rent to students only. Some will rent to anyone. Some are for students on a budget and offer no amenities. And some are similar to resorts in the range of amenities they offer…you get the idea. But Sahara Apartments stands alone by advertising a “No Party” Policy.
Sahara Apartments, located less than one mile west of the UofA campus on N. Stone Avenue, has had a “No Party” Policy in place
parties, no accidents, no drunken or drug-related injuries, and no Red Tags given by the police. Red Tags are given to properties when the police are called for disturbances or illegal activity. Yes, not a single
“Yes, some people view our ‘No Party’ Policy as a negative and frankly, some students choose not to live here because of the policy,” says Ted Mehr, owner and developer of Sahara Apartments. “ We look at Sahara Apartments as a sanctuary for students where they can feel safe, secure and free from the usual commotion that goes on in most student oriented apartment buildings. The kinds of things that can disturb a student’s sleep or study time. As a student-only property, we do not consider ourselves to be in the nightclub business, or the bar and entertainment business. There are plenty of choices for those activities all around Tucson. We are a student’s home away from home.”
Sahara Apartments sponsors social events on a monthly basis. These social activities are held both on and offsite. When they are offsite, Sahara’s shuttle provides free transportation to the events and brings the residents back. Residents can have their friends over and socialize with them in the student lounge, entertain them
in the game room, use the swimming and whirlpools, or study together in Sahara’s study room with free use of the Internet connected terminals.
“Safety is the number one thing parents are concerned about when their child moves away from home,” says Ted Mehr. “The concept of Sahara was born out of my concern for my own daughter’s safety as she was preparing for college. I wanted her to be in a safe and comfortable living environment no matter where she lived. I simply asked myself, what kind of place would I want my daughter to live in for the times I could not be there to watch over her? Sahara Apartments was my answer to that question.”
The concern for safety and security is evident as you approach the entry gate, or when you step into the
safety and security measures that are unmatched by any building in Tucson. The gated property includes an electronic key system with retrievable history of every entry into each apartment and through each gate. The property is equipped with 80 security cameras that monitor all public areas
on a 24/7 basis. There is even a network of infrared beams over the perimeter walls that sound an alarm and calls the owner on his cell phone if the perimeter walls are breached…regardless of the time of day or night. “If someone breaches the security of the building,
am sure you would want it for yours. It may be considered overly protective, but I would prefer to wake up and investigate in the
happened that could have been prevented,” admits Ted Mehr.
What else needs to be said about Sahara Apartments? They have a good long list of modern amenities that the students want, such as ALL utilities included in the rent, VERY high-speed Internet, kitchens and private bathrooms in each apartment, FREE shuttle service to and from campus, FREE bicycles for use as long as you are a resident, lower prices than the on-campus residence halls and comparable off campus student apartments, and you might have guessed…Sahara Apartments is the one property with the mini-movie theater. Check out Sahara’s Website for all the information about this unique student property at www.SaharaApartments.com or stop in and take a tour. The friendly staff at Sahara Apartments would be happy to show you around.

Welcome to the UA Wildcat Family!
Kathy Adams Riester, M.S. Ed
Associate Dean of Students
Director UA Parent & Family Programs
Greetings Wildcat Parents & Families,
Welcome to our tenth issue of the Parents & Family Magazine! You’re receiving
this magazine because you are one of our valued Parents Plus members or you
have made a generous donation to support the goals of the UA Parents & Family
Association. I thank you for your support! We are also sending copies of the Fall
Edition to parents of current freshman due to a generous grant from the Freshman
Fee Committee and with support from our Parents & Family Association sponsor,
O’Rielly Chevrolet.
Fall semester is a fun fi lled time here at UA! It’s a time of orienting (or reorienting)
to campus, with fun fall traditions like cheering on the Football team in the ZonaZoo
section, Family Weekend, Homecoming and the start of Basketball season.
I want to thank the parents and family members who were able to come to campus
for Family Weekend September 23-25. It was great having you all on campus. I also
want to send a special thanks to all the parents who joined us in our 2nd Annual
Family Weekend Golf Tournament at Skyline Country Club. We had a great time and
raised more than $6000 for the PFA Grant program!
In this Edition of the Magazine you have an opportunity to get to know Dr. Gene
Sander who is currently serving as the President of the University of Arizona (page
17 ) and see how UA students are making a diff erence by recognizing the kind acts of
others in a new partnership between Ben’s Bells and Campus Health called Be kind.
Step up (page 27). In the fall we also recognize the parents and family members
who have contributed $100 or more to the UA Parents & Family Association during
the past year. On behalf of the PFA Board, our students, and the Parent & Family
Programs staff – thank you to everyone who made a contribution! I hope that you
will do so again this year - every bit counts and makes a diff erence in supporting UA
students’ success.
We want our parents to GET INVOLVED! We are looking for some good volunteers
who have a little bit of time and talent to give! You don’t have to live in Arizona to
join us. For more information on our Committees see the Fall Update on Page 5. Be
sure to bookmark our website: www.uafamily.arizona.edu. It is an excellent source
of information and support!
I also want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful parent volunteers
who have served the association over the past year – I really appreciate your
dedication and support – and so do our students!
As always, don’t hesitate to give the Parents & Family
Association a call or send us an email if you have a
question or concern. Barbara Camp, Tyler Th om and
I are happy to be of assistance. We can be reached at
(520) 621-0884 or via email at dos-uafamily@email.

Parents & Family
Association Co-Chairs
When Alan and Janet Stein talk about the University of Arizona their enthusiasm for the university is immediately apparent. As a self-described “Wildcat for Life,” Alan grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and received his undergraduate degree in Middle East Studies from the University of Arizona, and although Janet grew up in Virginia and received her undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia, she is drawn to the campus’ energy and the energy of its students, faculty and staff . Both Alan and Janet feel strongly that the University of Arizona is a great institution worthy of their commitment as Co-Chairs of the Parents & Family Association (PFA).
Alan and Janet began their current af-fi liation with the UA when their daughter Allison fell in love with the campus while “tagging along” on her older sister’s visit. On her return visit senior year of high school, she knew the University was the only place for her. Alan states, “Beyond the beauty and reputation of the place, Allison noticed the unifying sense of community. She noticed that students were walking in twos and threes and had a connection to each other. At other places she visited, there were lots of students by themselves. She also noticed that almost everyone wore Arizona gear. Th ey were proud of their school.” Although she had many pos-sibilities on the east coast and elsewhere,

Janet and Alan Stein on the UA Mall with their daughter Allison.
Th e University of Arizona was the only school to which Allison applied.
Living in Fairfax Station, Virginia, and heading the Parents & Family Association’s Advisory Board in Tucson, Arizona may seem geographically incompatible, but the Steins have been involved with the PFA since Allison decided to attend the Univer-sity. Signing on to host a Summer Send-Off for future UA students in the Virginia, DC, and Maryland area each year since Ally’s acceptance is only the beginning of the Stein’s commitment. Th e Steins also co-chaired the Student Recruiting and Reten-tion Committee before their current role.
Th e benefi ts the Parents & Family As-sociation off er are what moved the Steins
to join. “Th e Parents & Family Association gives parents a voice at the university and an opportunity to contribute to the well-being of not only their students, but all students. Th e grants contribute directly to student safety and quality of life programs, as well as programs that make students more keenly aware of career paths to fol-low. Additionally, PFA memberships keep parents aware of issues within the state legislature that may aff ect the university, and an outlet to voice their support or concern” explained Alan. In addition the Steins note that PFA provides a place where parents can go to have a myriad of questions answered. Alan states, “this is

Program Director, Transfer Student Services
Th e University of Arizona is a large campus with over 38,000 students and lots of resources. Knowing who to talk to or where to begin can feel extremely over-whelming. Th at’s why we’re here to help you fi nd your way!
Th e August 24th ribbon-cutting cer-emony marked the grand opening of the Transfer Student Center at the University of Arizona. Th e Transfer Student Center was created to assist prospective and ad-mitted transfer students with their transi-
tion to the UA. Th e Center serves a diverse population of students and is dedicated to providing programs and services in sup-port of the academic success and retention of transfers.
Th e Center Director, Graduate Assis-tant, and Transfer Outreach Facilitators (TOF’s) are ready to answer questions, con-nect students with campus resources, and help them navigate various aspects of the transfer process, policies and procedures. Th e main goal is to provide as much infor-mation as possible for transfer students to feel connected to the University of Arizona campus and the people on it.
Transfer Outreach Facilitators (TOF’s) are former transfer students who are suc-cessful academically and engaged in the UA campus community. Th ey are assigned to the various colleges and are familiar with the academic advisors, programs and activities. Th e Transfer Outreach Facilita-tors are available in the Transfer Student Center from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Th e center is on the fourth fl oor of the Student Union Memorial Cen-ter in suite #402.
Th e center is complete with a comfort-able lounge area including chairs, sofas, refrigerator, microwave, water cooler, as well as a table for studying, all of which is available for use at no charge. particularly valuable to parents from out-of-state like ourselves.”
Th e Steins have transferred into their new role with a strong sense of what they would like to accomplish. “ We would like to see the Parent & Family Association be part of a larger, collaborative process in making the university the best it can be. To that end, we want the numerous organiza-tions on campus, as well as the staff , to be able to draw on us as enablers in successes of their various programs. PFA has a lot of talent and experience within the leader-ship and membership that can make a dif-ference. Bottom line, Janet and I want PFA to be part of the calculus as the university moves forward.”

UA President Gene Sander (in blue cap) with Parents & Family Association board
members and their students.
By Ford Burkhart
Gene Sander, now the UA’s 20th presi-dent, thinks big. In 1987, he became dean of a College of Agriculture where people spoke fondly of cows and plows. Within a few years, it was a modern College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, or CALS – he wanted the name to capture the cutting edge research agenda in most depart-ments.
After 24 years as dean, he could point to excellence everywhere, 17 endowed chairs, three Regents Professors, three faculty members in the National Academy of Sciences, research and teaching in new buildings, more than $54 million in grant funding his last year, and an agriculture industry thriving on his watch.
At age 75, having logged years as UA executive vice president, provost and vice president for outreach, fi shing in a Louisi-ana lake near his summer home sounded good. Just not yet. Th e UA off ered Eugene G. Sander – he prefers Gene, or Dean Gene as he was known at the College of Agri-culture and Life Sciences – the presidency while they searched for the 21st president, and Sander, his wife already in their new home near Houston, couldn’t refuse.
When Sander became a UA dean, there were more than a few skeptics. Would this biochemist from Cornell be the “biotech dean” of agriculture and forget about the farmers? One defi ning moment turned things around.
Some cotton growers had doubts about a genetically engineered cotton, said to be resistant to pink bollworm, a terrible pest that can destroy the crop. Sander took a leading cotton grower to the UA experimental farm near Maricopa and showed him the new transgenic cotton, with healthy white bolls, and the other plants, dark, ruined by the worms, and explained the science. “It was like day and night,” recalls Brian Larkins, director of the school of plant sciences and a Regents Professor. Suspicions of the “outsider” evaporated.
“Th ey were afraid he was going to
walk away from agriculture,” said Colin Kaltenbach, who was Sander’s vice dean and agricultural experiment station direc-tor. Sander became the growers’ friend, the one who sold them on a product that saved the cotton industry in Arizona.
For any growers who still wondered what this biochemist knew about real farms, the answer was: plenty. Sander grew up on a large sugar beet farm in the Red River Valley of Minnesota.
Sander has a farmer’s way with people. He can bring them together over a com-plex problem, set out the issues and the
options, and then say: “We probably don’t need six committees and a séance to fi gure this out.”
It’s just one of his trademark lines, and it still cracks up those who have heard him use it often as an
administrator. A folksy style is one of Sander’s tools as
a consummate people manager. Behind it is a keen scientifi c mind and one of the strongest academic resumes of any uni-versity president ever. At CALS, he raised funds for more endowed professorships
than any other college. He helped achieve No. 1 national rankings for agricultural sci-ences, agronomy and crop sciences.
Sander was born in Fargo, North Da-kota, grew up shoveling snow and mowing lawns in a town of 1,000 people, Dodge Center, in Minnesota. At $15 a month, he was janitor at the Congregational Church and was all-state in football. He earned $4 a day on the family farm in summers. His parents were a county agricultural extension agent and a school teacher. His degrees were from the University of Minnesota (B.S. in animal science) and Cornell (M.S., Ph.D. in biochemistry).
At the University of Florida, he was as-sociate chairman of biochemistry and mo-lecular biology at the College of Medicine. Next he became chairman of biochemistry at West Virginia University Medical Center.
At Texas A&M, Sander was head of biochemistry and biophysics, developed its Institute of Biosciences and Technol-ogy and was its fi rst director. He became deputy chancellor for biotechnology development of the Texas A&M University System before being recruited to the UA by President Henry Koffl er to shake up the College of Agriculture.

nounced his departure on Aug. 1 to be executive director of the Fiesta Bowl, a college football organization, the Sanders had bought a home in a Houston suburb to be near their daughter and two grandsons. (Th e Sanders’ children, Jay and Kathy, are both UA graduates.) His wife, Louise Canfi eld Sander, an emeritus UA professor of biochemistry and molecular biophys-ics, was in Texas waiting for Gene to retire July 1. Instead, he agreed to take on the presidency.
He has set a full, active agenda. He says “we’re strong, we’re solid, we’re prepared” but adds: “You just cannot let any major organization, be it a company or a univer-sity or anything, just sit and languish. My principal goal during this next year will be to make sure that we have a very success-ful retention plan.”
Fishing or work on his 1949 Ford pickup will come later. Meanwhile, a top priority, he says, will be “to make sure that this university appears as a very attractive place for a new leader to come in and take us to the next step.”

Living off Campus Next Year: What to ConsiderThe chance that a student will
live off-campus sometime in
their college career is almost a
guarantee. There are a few things
to consider in helping fi nd that
perfect place to call home.
Start Early: Begin searching at least 2
months before your planned move-in date. If you are
looking at a place for the spring, try to have a lease
signed before winter break. Most properties will
allow you to move in when you return in January.
Budget: What will your monthly expenses look
like? Include rent, utilities, groceries, transportation,
and entertainment expenses in your budget.
Roommates: Determine how many
roommates you would like and who they will be. It
is a great way to offset costs. Be careful of who you
choose for roommates as you may not really know a
person until you live with them.
Inspect the Condition: When you visit a
complex, ask to see the unit you will be renting, not a
model. Check areas such as appliances, doors, lights,
faucets, storage spaces, and other areas. If you want
the apartment only under the conditions that there are
repairs, get a written agreement from your landlord that
includes dates of completion.
Inspect for Security: Inspect the outside
of the complex to check for adequate lighting in parking
lots and other areas. Ask about security measures on
the property and if any incidents have occurred recently.
Also, inspect the unit to make sure all of the windows
and doors lock properly and there is a peep hole in the
front door.
Deposits: Be prepared to put down a deposit,
as most properties require one. It is usually the fi rst
month’s rent. Most utilities also require a deposit for
new services.
Pets: If you own or want a pet, know the policies
of the housing provider before signing a lease. Some
places allow only certain types of pets while others do
not even allow them.
Leases: Leases come in many different lengths.
Some are month to month while others are for a
specifi ed amount of time (i.e. 12 month, 6 month).
Make sure you understand everything in your lease.

Health Service
We all know that it’s the little things in life that can make a diff erence – often in a big way. Th at’s the reason why the UA Campus Health Service has teamed up with the Ben’s Bells Project and UA Athletics on the new “Be Kind, Step Up!” initiative that recognizes ordinary (and ex-traordinary) acts of kindness in our community.
You may have seen the beautifully crafted bells that Executive Director Jean-nette Maré and her team hang throughout Tucson, in memory of her son Ben who passed away from a childhood illness. “Ben’s Bells” became a way to pass on the acts of kindness that sustained her and her family following Ben’s death and have come to symbolize “our connectedness as a community and our commitment to taking better care of each other.” “Be Kind, Step Up!” builds on that spirit through the creation of handmade bracelets that are passed along in recognition of good deeds that do just that.
As the name suggests, the program also draws on the Step Up! bystander interven-tion training that was developed by UA Athletics and encourages students to safely intervene when their peers may be in
need. Topics include alcohol and alcohol poisoning, hazing, relationship violence, sexual assault, eating disorders, academic integrity and more. Students learn how to recognize potential problems and “step up” to off er help.
Th e “Be Kind, Step Up!” website lets individuals share their stories, and even allows users to look up all the kind acts as-sociated with their bracel et by referencing its unique number.
Here’s a sampling of just a few of the things we’ve heard so far:
#608: “I was there for a friend in a tough time, and just by listening, they were able to vent and fi nd a reason to smile. Th ey passed on this bracelet to me in thanks.”
#469: “I helped a student with extra tutoring time.”
#352: “I’m a nurse and the grandmoth-er of a patient gave this to me for taking
Initiative recognizes acts of kindness care of her grandson! Made my whole day!”
# 596: “Simply gave a very nice UA student information about all the wonderful services and resources available at UA Career Services. I was so happy to receive the bracelet! What a neat idea!”
Although the initiative has just started, the response has exceeded expectations. Erin Strange, Violence Prevention Specialist at Campus Health and the Oasis Program, noted that, “Th e best part has been seeing
students, staff , and faculty get excited about the program. Other schools and organizations have already contacted us from around the country asking how they can get involved.”
Jeannette Maré added, “We are over-whelmed by the response of the campus community to ‘Be Kind, Step Up!’ We have had an incredible relationship with the University for many years and it is gratify-ing to see this partnership take off in such a powerful way.”
To learn more about the program, please check out www.bekindstepup.org, or contact Erin Strange at (520) 626-1829. You can also help spread kindness and contribute to the project through dona-tions or by making bracelets. Contact Ben’s Bells at (520) 628-2829 to get in-volved. Just like kindness itself, all support – big or small – makes a diff erence!

By Marc Acuña, Assistant Director, Non-Resident Recruitment, Offi ce of Admissions
Th e University of Arizona’s Offi ce of Ad-missions, UA Parents & Family Association, and the Alumni Association are excited to announce the re-launching of our P.A.W.S. program. Th e goal of P.A.W.S. 2.0 (Parents and Alumni Working with Students) is to recruit the best and brightest students across the country and to continue advanc-ing the University. Th e UA Parents & Family Association is committed to helping the Offi ce of Admissions with this important project via PFA’s Student Recruitment & Retention Committee.
Our hope, through this partnership with parents and alumni, is to reach more families across the country with students who are interested in becoming Wildcats. In volunteering with P.A.W.S. and the PFA Student Recruitment & Retention Com-mittee, you will provide a unique perspec-tive from your experience at UA and assist prospective students with the admissions process. Your willingness to serve as a
Wildcat Recruitment: Parents & Alumni connecting with future Wildcats
point of reference is immensely valuable to these families and to us. As a P.A.W.S. volunteer you are able to provide one-on-one interaction that could ultimately be the diff erence between students choosing UA over another institution.
One of the most benefi cial activities you can participate in as a P.A.W.S. volunteer is the Adopt a School program. It is impossi-ble for Th e Offi ce of Admissions to provide a counselor to every school in the coun-try; this is where dedicated parents and alumni can assist. By adopting a school(s), you become that institutions adjunct UA admissions counselor.
As you know, the University of Arizona prides itself on student success and access. Our parents and alumni are some of the most passionate in the country and willing-ly carry on the spirit and traditions of the UA long after graduation. For more infor-mation on getting involved in the Parents & Family Association Student Recruitment and Retention Committee and the P.A.W.S. program please call 520-621-0884 or email [email protected]
