The results have been consistent. Anne Henderson and Nancy Berla summed it up in their book A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement , which reviewed the existing research: "When parents are involved in their children's education at home, they do better in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school and the schools they go to are better." Research shows that when parents are involved in their children's education, the children are more likely to: earn better grades. score higher on tests. pass their classes. attend school regularly. have better social skills. show improved behavior. be more positive in their attitude toward school. complete homework assignments. graduate and continue their education. School Improvement Plan Science: 29% of 8 th grade students achieved a level 3 on the 2012 administration of the FCAT Science test. Objective: 37% of 8 th grade students will achieve a level 3 on the 2013 administration of the FCAT Science test. Title 1 Hardee Junior High School is a Title 1 school for the 2012-2013 school year. Social Studies Sixth Grade is currently learning about Rome and will begin studying the Islamic World this month. Seventh Grade will be studying the three branches of government in depth this month. They will also begin exploring their state and local governments. Eighth Grade is currently learning about George Washing- ton's presidency and the issues the new nation faced. Students will begin studying The New Republic, which includes The Jefferson Era, including the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark. 6 th Grade: We are currently working on Chapter 6 (Algebraic Expressions). Once we wrap that up we are going to be working on the Geometry Unit. 7th Grade: Percents: Understand and use proportionality, including percents. 8th Grade: Linear Functions and Systems of Equations: Use the slope and x- and y-intercepts of a line to solve and graph real world situations. There is a website called IXL (your students will know about this website) that the students can log in to for extra practice when they are at home, the public library, or anywhere internet is available. They can choose to work on the focus skill we are working on in class or they are able to choose a topic they find difficult or a weak area. At the end of each 9 week period, prizes are given to students who actively participate on this website as well. Remind your students of this incentive. It is also an extra credit opportunity in some classrooms. After School Tutoring is being offered for all grades (Mon.-Thurs.); students must have a completed permission slip to stay. The students are given a snack after school and will need to be picked up between 4:45 and 5:00pm. HJH was overrun by many Nerds on February 8th

Language Arts and Reading

Students in language arts classes typically learn to write various kinds

of essays, responses to questions,

and many other types of writing. Sometimes students may write just

for fun! At this time of year, writing

an essay becomes especially im-portant for 8th graders who will take

the statewide FCAT Writes test Feb.

26. The essay will be one of two types, either persuasive or exposi-tory. Until the day of the test, the type and topic are not revealed so

students must be prepared to write for either essay. Eighth graders

have written on demand essays for benchmark tests and have re-ceived scores for those essays. Students and teachers alike are hope-

ful that the test results this year will reflect their hard work as well

as their knowledge of writing. We expect good scores from this year's 8th graders and look forward to the test results that will show

their accomplishment!

The science fair is over and the students who participated are to be com-

mended on a terrific job. The following students placed in the top 14: Anastasia Nobles, Dayana Villagran, Lindsey Barwick, Illeana Flores,

Tara Hines, Benjamin Norris, John Ullrich, Jansen Walker, Taylor Bone,

Zack Durastanti, Nubia Gomez, Bridgette Conley, Ashja Camel, and Par-ker Carlton.

Science Snippets

Ms. Miller is beginning a new semester with a new group of eighth grad-

ers. It is our hope to serve as many eighth grade students as possible in

order to help students master the Science Benchmarks this year. Students will begin with an introduction to using the Scientific Method in solving

measureable, observable questions .

SCIENCE FAIR was held January 24th in the HJH gymnasium. Awards

Assembly was held Friday, January 25th in the auditorium at 6:30 p.m

Congratulations to these students on being chosen to compete at

the state level for their science fair projects.
