Parent Newsletter February 5, 2016
Good Morning, I hope that you are home safe, relaxing comfortably today as school has been cancelled due to inclement weather for the first time this year. This cancellation will tentatively move our official last day of school to Thursday, June 16th. All after school activities have been cancelled for today, including our Valentine’s Dance. Our Star of the Month Breakfast Ceremony scheduled for this morning will take place on Monday, 2/8/16. I would like to officially announce our coaches for the spring sports season at Hurley Middle School. Our softball coach will be Mr. Bill Paulo. Coach Paulo has served as an assistant coach for the HMS softball team, and has also coached many local recreational and travel softball teams. Our new baseball coach for this season will be Mr. Andrew Brum. Coach Brum recently completed his first season as HMS Girls’ Basketball Coach, and prior to that was an assistant coach for that team for a couple of years. I am grateful to have these two gentlemen on board as head coaches for our spring season. They have both established many positive relationships with our students and staff already, and I am confident that they will both do a tremendous job working with our student athletes this spring. Information on tryouts for baseball and softball will be announced over the next couple of weeks. Please take a moment to carefully read Ms. Bouchard’s piece included in this week’s newsletter, as she will be explaining some guidelines regarding discipline and end of the year activities and privileges. She has explained this to all of our students, and it is important that every parent and guardian is also aware of these policies, which are outlined in our student handbook. Enjoy the snow! It’s time to get out and shovel. Have a great weekend. Sincerely, Dr. William V. Whalen III Principal

Hello Hurley Families, As we know the month of February always seems to go by fast, and with March 1st right around the corner, I have reminded students (in all three grades during lunch this week) of the following information that can be found in the student handbook on page 25.
GRADE LEVEL/CLUB TRIPS: In order to participate in the end-‐of-‐the-‐year trips students will be expected to complete the specific requirements set up for the trips. Students are reminded that these trips should be viewed as a privilege afforded to the student; it is not a right to which the student is entitled. Trips in June: from March 1st until the day of the trip-‐ A student will lose field trip privilege if the student is: suspended out of school once, or suspended in school more than once, or accumulates more than 3 office detentions.
Note: 8th Grade Parents/Students-‐ This does apply to the Washington D.C. trip, and if a student is not able to attend for disciplinary reasons then he/she may not be entitled to a refund after April 1st. I also reminded the 8th grade of our dance policy in the student handbook on page 25, since it will apply to their semi-‐formal dance on May 27th.
DANCE OR ACTIVITY DAY REGULATIONS: Admission to dances is limited to students of Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School only. Any student having two or more office detentions, or one or more in school/out of school suspensions, forfeit their right to attend the next school dance of the year.
In conclusion, I reminded students that these are great privileges in which their teachers do an awesome job creating these experiences/memories during their middle school years. I along with their teachers want nothing more than for each student to have the opportunity to attend these trips, and so I reinforced the successful characteristics that I had discussed during the State of the School Address. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and have a nice long weekend! Ms. Bouchard Interim Assistant Principal

Welcome to White Team English! by Madison Bedrosian
As students begin wrapping up The Tempest by William Shakespeare, they
will be working on improving their reading comprehension and speaking skills.
Students are required to read at least three times as one of the play characters. This
helps them to not only understand the scene and Elizabethan language, but also adds
to participation skills. Performing also helps students become more comfortable with
public speaking, which will benefit them the rest of their lives. In addition to comprehension,
students wrote sonnets similar to that of Shakespeare, but used song lyrics, appropriate, of
course. Students were required to use at least twenty Elizabethan words, and a certain rhyme
scheme (iambic pentameter) with ten syllables in each line. The objective of the poems was to
allow students to relate to Shakespeare's sonnets, while using modern lyrics we could understand
and enjoy. The sonnets will be used in an end of the year project reflecting on the eighth grade
year.

Salute of 21 Soft, dost thee wot an fightings worth it now Thee art trying to find a place to hide Thee don’t want to now taketh a bow Soon thee beginneth to hast little pride Thee feeleth like thou art carrying loads Thy future is unknown for the moment And you’ve cometh to the end of all roads And thy life just needeth a postponement Thee knoweth that life isn’t very fair Thee hath lost somebody that thee doth love For thee knoweth to giveth up thy square Thee desire that those gents art up above And so thee solute with twenty-one’eth But thee knoweth thee wanteth to runneth By: Madison Bedrosian

Science – Orange Team Students have wrapped up filming their science commercials to try and sell an element on the periodic table. These commercials not only highlighted uses and characteristics of elements, but also showcased students’ various talents … acting, singing, dancing, and even some dunking! The project allowed for some creative freedom as well as provided students with an opportunity to delve deeper into the elements of everyday life. Some still frames of the videos are below:
