Dear Parents
On behalf of the directors, staff and parents, may I extend to you all, a very warm
welcome. We sincerely hope that your time spent at Mylnhurst will be both rewarding and
enjoyable.
The aim of all our staff is to fully develop the potential of your children and to promote
a mutual respect for each and every member of our community here at Mylnhurst School and
Nursery.
I’m sure, like us, you expect high standards and with home and school working together
as closely as possible we feel confident that your child will benefit from the variety of
opportunities available here.
The early years are vital in giving our children a good start on their journey through the
education system. Mylnhurst is very proud of the children who have passed through the
school and each one, in their own individual way, is a credit to themselves, their parents and
Mylnhurst.
It is our hope that your child will make every effort to play a full part in the life of the
school and be prepared to give their best no matter what the task may be.
So it only remains for me to wish you the very best during your time at Mylnhurst and
every success with your future plans.
Kind regards
Chris Emmott
Headmaster

Welcome to Mylnhurst
Keeping you updated
We do this in two main ways:
1. SCHOOL WEBSITE (www.mylnhurst.co.uk) where important information is stored and many exciting
pictures, of the children enjoying school life, are there for you to enjoy. Also the children have their very
own LEARNING ZONE. So do encourage them to log on and try out the software.
2. PARENTMAIL. We are now an Eco-School (SILVER) and are committed to reducing the amount of
paper we use. Every family has provided the school with an email address and the vast majority of our
correspondence comes to you via email. Make sure you provide the school with up to date contact
details.
Use of mobile phones in school
Whilst on school premises, no child may use a mobile phone or switch it on, unless they have the
permission of a member of staff and are supervised while using it.
If you wish your child to carry a mobile phone you must contact your class teacher and inform them of
your decision and reasons in writing.
Thank you for your support in this matter
5
The following guidelines have been drawn up to help ensure the safety of our children.
1. No cars are allowed into school grounds for the purpose of
bringing or collecting their children.
2. Please don’t park across the driveways of local residents.
3. Keep the Zig-Zag lines and double yellow lines on Woodholm Rd clear at all times.
4. If you have children in Prep 1 or above, why not consider parking on Millhouses Lane
and using the entrance there. This entrance is much less congested than Woodholm
Road.
5. Walk your children to school if at all possible or consider a car share.
We are an Eco-school and always encourage energy efficient forms of transport.
6. If you have any concerns about safety, then please contact the headmaster as soon as
possible.
Thank you for your support
7. Our school site is a designated NON-SMOKING site.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Mylnhurst School is owned by Mylnhurst Limited a company limited by guarantee. It was
incorporated on 16th January 1996 in order to take over the administration of the school from
the Sisters of Mercy on 1st September 1996. The school is a registered charity (no. 1056683).
The members of the company are the incumbent Directors of Mylnhurst Limited who are all
parents of current or past pupils.
The Directors of our school are:
1. CATHERINE THOMPSON (Chair of Directors & Legal Director)
appointed April 2007
Experienced contract lawyer
2. ANNE RAFTERY, (Company Secretary)
appointed February 2000
A former chair of ‘Friends’
Qualified General Nurse.
3. JONATHAN SAUNDERS (Buildings Committee)
appointed February 2010
Regional Director, North of England with OPUS International,
consultant design engineer.
4. MARTINA BRADSHAW (Finance Director)
appointed April 2001.
Finance secretary at ‘Help a Child Have a Chance’
5. CHRIS EMMOTT (Headmaster) attends all Board Meetings
appointed January 1996
The Board of Directors meets a minimum of six times per year.

Board of Directors
8
The operation of the Company is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association
which sets out the rules for appointment and retirement of directors and members, procedures
for meetings etc. One third of the Directors retire each year at the Annual General Meeting
and may offer themselves for re-election. No director of the Company is entitled to any
remuneration and the Company therefore relies on its Directors acting in an entirely voluntary
capacity. No employee of the Company may therefore become a Director although the
Headteacher does attend all Board meetings. The power of appointment of new
Directors lies with the existing members of the Company.
It has been the intention since the inauguration of the Company that the majority of Directors
would be parents of children in the school. Since the school is a business, it is necessary that
all Board members have specific business skills required by the Directors of any successful
company to ensure the success and future of the school.
The Directors recognise that there are many parents in the school who can contribute to its
success in ways other than the direct management of the company and to this end a number of
sub-committees have been established comprising members of staff and parents which report
to the main board. These are:
The Curriculum Committee
The Business and Marketing Committee
The Buildings Committee
The Finance Committee
Each committee is chaired by a member of the Board of Directors or the Headteacher and
provides a valuable resource to the Board in the operation of the school. Any parent who is
interested in joining any of the committees should contact the Headteacher. Vacancies on the
Board of Directors will be notified to parents as they arise.
All your directors have postal pigeon holes in the school office.
Should you wish to contact them directly
then please pass your correspondence to the school secretary.

Our School Day
11
Mylnhurst Children’s Club (MCC) is available before the start of school from 7.45am and after
school to 5.45pm.
Some parents use this facility on a regular basis and other use on demand, either way it exists for
your convenience.
It is managed by Mr Paul Michalowski.
The Mylnhurst Children’s Club is based in the Early Years Centre. Children needing this facility can
be pre-booked in or use the facility as a solution to unscheduled delays for parents. The children are
always escorted to the Children’s Club by a member of staff at the end of their school day. Mylnhurst
Children’s Club is very well equipped with books, games, TV/Video, paints, toys and provides a
stimulating care environment.
Refreshments are available at the start of the afternoon sessions. The older children are encouraged to
spend time in the Homework Club with an adult during the afternoon session.
Mylnhurst Children’s Club provides a safe, caring play and recreational area for children.
Parents arriving before 5pm often experience the lament
… “oh mum/dad why have you come early!”
So, if you are working or need to carry out appointments without the children then the children’s club
offers a very supportive care facility for you.

General Information
Full uniform, including hats and caps, must be worn on arrival at, and departure from, school.
No sweets, money or toys to be brought into school.
Arrival & Collection Procedures
Note: Collection means that the supervising member of staff has made visual contact
with a designated adult and handed the child over to their care. All children are
required to say ‘Good Afternoon’ to the member of staff dismissing them before leaving.
Nursery and Reception are to be taken to, and collected from, their classroom each day.
Prep 1 children are taken to their classroom and collected from the main entrance.
At the discretion of parents, Prep 2 children may be taken to their classroom each morning or
can make their own way to their classroom from the courtyard entrance. They are to be
collected from the courtyard each afternoon.
At the discretion of parents, Prep 3-6 children may be left at the school gate or the courtyard
entrance each morning. They are to be collected from the courtyard each afternoon unless
alternative arrangements have been agreed (in writing) with the class teacher and headmaster.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Any child not collected at the appropriate time will be taken to
our after school club. Under no circumstances will children be allowed to wait around
school unsupervised.
The nursery children need to bring a packed lunch, including a drink (not Fizzy), each day in
a lunch box. A napkin should be included. No glass bottles please. Children may bring a
biscuit or a piece of fruit for morning break.
All children from Reception to Prep 6 are provided with a school lunch. Lunches are served
in our Dining Room situated in the Stable block and we deliver a cafeteria style service with a
choice of two main meals (including a vegetarian option), dessert, fresh fruit, yoghurt and
fresh drinking water.
We are able to cater for all dietary needs and should your child have a specific requirement
you should make this known so that we can ensure their needs are met.
All children in the school may bring a healthy snack (e.g. fruit) for their morning break.
Swimming kit will be needed once a week, usually on the same day each week. Class teachers
will advise parents of the swimming day for their class at the beginning of each year / term.
Children usually need a named tin to bring home baking from time to time.
Your class teacher will tell you in advance when the tin will be needed.
Children’s Records
Please be aware that any information we hold about your child (contact details, medical
records, assessment data and developmental records, including EYFS profiles) is always
available for you to see on request. Simply contact your class teacher or headmaster.

General Information
13
The 1988 Education Reform Act brought the National Curriculum and the curriculum at Mylnhurst is planned in
accordance with it.
The Foundation Stage begins when children reach the age of three and continues to the end of the reception class.
Key stage one and key stage two are built on the experiences achieved at the foundation stage.
The curriculum is organised into seven areas of learning. The three prime areas are Personal, Social & Emotional
Development, Communication and Language, and Physical. The remaining four are specific areas which are
interwoven through the prime areas, these are: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts
and Design.
Mylnhurst delivers an effective and carefully structured foundation curriculum.
We still hold on to the basic elements that make Mylnhurst special, we recognise the individual child’s needs and
enable them to achieve their potential in all areas of the curriculum.
Primary Education is classified into Key Stages where:
Foundation Stage is… children in Nursery and Reception
Key Stage 1 is..... children in Preps 1 and 2
Key Stage 2 is..... children in Preps 3, 4, 5 and 6
Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
SATs (Standard Attainment Tests) These take place at the end of each key stage i.e.
Prep 2 (aged 6/7 years)
and Prep 6 (aged 10/11 years).
Mylnhurst enters all the children for these tests, which are a combination of externally marked tests and our teacher
assessment. The results of these are reported to parents on the end-of-year report.
and much much more…..
Swimming: Formal swimming lessons begin in reception. Our 25m indoor pool gives us the opportunity to
integrate swimming into our timetable without the problem of time wasted on transportation.
Modern Foreign Languages (French & Spanish) are taught from the age of three and the children leave Mylnhurst
with a solid foundation. This brings many advantages to the children when they move onto secondary school.

Curriculum (inc. Special Needs)
14
ICT: We have a PC/Applemac suite. The children use both operating systems and benefit
from a very high level of provision in the teaching of computer skills. There are class sets of
iPads available for daily use.
Technology: Our technology suite is extensively used by all age ranges. It is equipped with
an excellent range of tools and materials which support the technology, art and science
curriculum.
Performing Arts: Our specialist teachers work with Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 classes
on a weekly basis. Dance/Drama etc. remains a very strong element of our curriculum and
this is reflected in the performances given to parents by the children.
Music: Our Director of Music works with all the children in the school to develop their
musical talents. In addition we have well established brass bands which perform in the local
community. Our school choir has continued to be a strong feature of music at Mylnhurst.
Children are introduced to the recorder at an early age and there is a large selection of
individual music tuition available for those who wish to pursue other instruments such as
piano, brass instruments, flute, guitar, violin, cello, drums and also vocal lessons.
Games: We have games specialists to develop the skills of our children and Mylnhurst has
had much success over recent years in competitions in and around the Sheffield area and
further afield. All our games facilities are on site, including playing field, sports hall, 25m
indoor swimming pool and dance studio.
Holiday Activity Camp (Camp Merlins):
Mylnhurst holds Camp Merlins during school holiday periods, a holiday camp for 4-11 year
olds. Additional information is available on the website: www.campmerlins.co.uk
Special Needs Department
Our Special Needs Department is headed by Mrs Catherine Madin. She works closely with
class teachers and other specialists employed by Mylnhurst. We have teachers who are
Dyslexia Institute trained and together we work very hard to meet the individual needs of our
children. We work within the guidelines of the DfE Code of Practice for Special Educational
Needs and the support staff have a room which has been specifically designed to support their
work with the children.
We are always working towards maximising the potential of your child so, where problems
arise, we look to identify them quickly and give the necessary support, either outside or
within the classroom.
We always work closely with parents and you are kept informed of any extra help we are
providing for your child. Parents attend reviews where necessary.
Please note that Mylnhurst does not charge for extra support. We see this support as part of
our commitment to your child.
Staff: Mrs Catherine Madin (Special Needs Co-ordinator/Dyslexia Institute Trained)
Mrs Melanie Jackson (ALSA British Dyslexia Association)
We are a Dyslexia aware school. If you have any concerns or questions about dyslexia then
please contact your class teacher asap.

At Mylnhurst we feel very strongly about the individual rights of our children. Our school
community is based on mutual respect and a caring Christian ethos. We expect the children to
be polite and courteous at all times, co-operative with each other and staff. The school
benefits from a genuinely happy atmosphere and each one of us is expected to play our part in
maintaining a spirit of co-operation within a challenging and stimulating environment. Should
we need to enforce any sanctions upon the children, these are done in such a way as to make it
very clear to the children where they have caused problems for those around them and
encourage a more positive approach where necessary. The support of parents is always
appreciated should the need arise.
We are all about promoting good behaviour and resolving disputes quickly and effectively.
Sanctions are never used as a first option, but we may need to use them if appropriate. These
will vary from, withdrawing golden time, missing break time to repeat work or inviting
parents in to discuss an agreed way forward.
Corporal punishment is not permitted in our school.
The following policies are available for you to view either through school or via our school

There are a wide range of activities which take place in school. These change each term and are devised
to offer a good cross-section of activities for all children.
Do please encourage your children to take advantage of these opportunities wherever possible. We will
monitor the interest levels and are always looking for new initiatives for the children to try.
Attendance
Children can use the first visit as a taster for the activity. If they decide to sign up then they are fully
expected to continue with the activity through to the end of term.
Collection
If the activity takes place after school, please make sure that your child has been signed out before
leaving. This is a very important aspect of our safety planning.
What’s on offer
The new activities list will be sent home via Parentmail and posted on the school website. Have a look at
the activities with your child and encourage them to have a go!
Here is a sample of our extra curricular activities list:

Swimming Currently children from Reception to Prep 6 have their swimming lessons in our 25m indoor
swimming pool. The children swim once per week and are encouraged to develop good
technique and stamina. Lessons are delivered by our fully qualified PE staff.
House System
The house names are:
Children are put into a house when they enter the main school in Reception. Every week the
number of house points gained is added to the House Board in the chapel. These points are
given to individuals for:
a) Hard Work & b) High Standards for that child.
At the end of each term we award the House Cup to the house with the most points.
Mass We celebrate Mass once per half term. Fr John Cooke from the parish of St William’s comes
into school and mass is celebrated in the school chapel. All children take part and whilst the
sacrament of communion is only available to the Roman Catholics in our school, many children
go forward to receive a blessing. The music, readings and homily are all geared towards an
enjoyable school gathering for all our pupils.
Parents of all faiths are always welcome at Mass, as they are at school assemblies. Children are
often keen for parents to see an assembly which they have prepared themselves.
First Communion Preparation is now done by the parishes. Nevertheless, both Mrs Shipley and Mr Emmott are
available for advice and support if required.
Charity Work Mylnhurst supports a number of charities throughout the school year. These are:
Samaritans Purse Christmas Shoe Box Appeal - St Wilfrid’s Centre in Sheffield - St Luke’s
Hospice - Hallam Diocesan Caring Service - CAFOD and World Missions - Bluebell Wood
Children’s Hospice. These charities help to raise the awareness of our children with respect to
the poverty and hardship of those less fortunate.
Gerard Named after the much loved headmistress Sister Gerard, served Mylnhurst from 1973-1986
Blake Named after William Blake who built Mylnhurst in 1893
McAuley Named after the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley
Walsh Named after a famous Sheffield family who lived in the house before it became a school.

Be punctual – it is much appreciated! (Registration is 8:35am prompt)
Absence
1. Illness.
On these unavoidable occurrences, it is helpful if parents inform the school office by
telephone that their child will not be in school (Office Number: 0114 236 1411). On return to
school your child or yourself should hand the teacher a letter of explanation for school
records.
2. Appointments.
Always try to avoid school times where possible, but in any case please give your class
teacher as much written notice as possible.
3. Holidays.
See attendance policy on page 27 of this handbook.
Please note: Whilst your class teacher may occasionally set holiday work, it is not set by
specific request.
Complaints Procedure Copies of the complaints procedures are available on request from the school office or on the
school website.

Introductory Evenings These are held shortly after the beginning of the Autumn Term and are an opportunity to meet
your child’s new class teacher and have a brief look at what is in store for the coming year.
These meetings are very useful and I would encourage you all to try and attend.
Parents’ Evenings Parents evenings provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress:
Reception Parents’ Evenings are held twice a year; in the Autumn and Summer terms.
The first meeting is in October and is used to see how your child has settled down and to
identify any initial concerns.
The second parents evening is held late in the Summer term and is used to discuss your
child’s progress in relation to the EYFS Profile and the Early Learning Goals. This meeting
will also provide an overview of the whole year.
Key Stage 1 & 2 Parents’ Evenings are held twice a year; in the Autumn and Spring terms.
The first meeting is in October and is used to see how your child has settled down and to
identify any initial concerns.
The second parents evening is held late in the Spring term and is used to discuss your child’s
progress based on their recent tests.
If at any time during the year you wish to discuss a matter of concern, do not hesitate to make
an appointment with the class teacher or headmaster. The class teacher or headmaster are
always available to listen to your concerns.
Assessment The children at Mylnhurst are tested frequently throughout the year, so as to help with teacher
assessment and inform curriculum planning. The main examinations take place in the summer
term and are recorded on the end-of-year report. You will be able to discuss these
examinations at length with the teacher during the summer parents’ evening.
Educational Visits Such trips are arranged to places of interest and would normally compliment topics being
studied in school. Parents are asked to cover the cost of such trips. For each trip, parents will
receive a letter explaining the details and cost of the trip. You will be required to sign an
Annual Consent Form to give permission for all trips.
Children are usually asked to wear school uniform for school trips which helps reinforce the
identification of Mylnhurst children outside school.
We use our own mini buses which are fitted with seatbelts. Occasionally, coaches will be
used for larger groups.

Parents in the process of selecting secondary schools
are provided with the following assistance.
1. A list of schools, both independent and mainstream, covering a broad area around
Sheffield. This list will include:
Contact names and telephone numbers
Dates of open days and entrance exams
Dates for completion of application forms
2. Access to the prospectus for these schools.
3. A noticeboard in the library is available for your use, and provides newsletters from
various schools and information about open days.
4. On occasions, staff from secondary schools may be available to speak to parents.
Mylnhurst has a good relationship with both independent and maintained sector schools.
The Process
1. Make sure you complete the ‘transfer to secondary school’ asap.
and well before the deadline. Further information will be available at the Prep 6
introductory evening.
2. Try to visit all the schools you are considering on either open days or
by private arrangement.
3. Keep an open mind about schools.
4. Talk to friends, teachers and parents who have children at secondary schools.
5. DO NOT miss deadlines for applications as this would most likely
affect your chances of entry.
6. If your child is seeking a place at a school which requires an entrance examination
then they will be supported in their preparation by the school.
7. The headmaster is always available to discuss your choice of secondary school.

‘Friends’ is an organisation within Mylnhurst School with a charter to:
1. bring school and home closer together and encourage parents to be involved
2. arrange social events in the school calendar, and
3. raise funds to enhance the experience of the children at Mylnhurst.
Every teacher and every parent is automatically a member of ‘Friends’. The organisation operates
through a committee that is assembled from parents of children from each year group. ‘Friends’
meets around twice a term in the school, where activities and events are planned and organised in a
friendly and accessible forum. Please look out for details of forthcoming meetings that are posted on
school notice boards and the school website.

Medication
Where children have medical needs, parents must give us details of the child’s condition and
medication and sign the necessary permission form if they require a member of staff to
administer any medication. Parents are required to bring the medication to school in a secure,
labelled container.
Records will be kept of all medication received and given. Emergency medication may be
stored securely in the classroom (for anaphylaxis or asthma); other drugs will be stored
securely in the school office.

Attendance Policy
Rationale
Good attendance at school is important for your child’s education and establishes a positive working ethos early
in life. 100% attendance is unlikely, but it is essential that the school is informed of the reasons for absence.
Under current government legislation, unauthorised absence is regarded as truancy and all absence figures have
to be recorded on a child’s annual report. It is also important that your child arrives on time for school, as the
start of the day establishes the learning activities for the day. Lateness is recorded in the register.
For sickness
When your child is unwell please call the school on the first morning of absence by 10.30am. We will require a
letter, explaining the reason why the child is not at school, on the child’s return. If your child has been sick or
has had a temperature it is important they stay at home for 48 hours.
For out of school dental and medical treatment Please let the school office know in writing, in advance of the date and time of the appointment and when your
child will be collected from and/or returned to school.
For family holidays during term time A request form must be obtained from the school office/website and returned to the Headteacher, at least one
month prior to the date of departure. Authorisation is at the discretion of the school and factors such as school
attendance will be taken into consideration. Absence can be authorised for up to ten days in any academic year,
apart from the SATs period in Prep 6 (May) and cannot be authorised retrospectively. Any requests exceeding
ten days will also be notified to the Directors.
For other absences
Permission for special occasions such as weddings must be requested in advance, in writing to the Headteacher.
Shopping trips, birthday trips, days out and holidays at home will not be authorised.
