PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Hello everyone,
Sunday Remembrance Day
This Sunday marks 100 years since the end of World War One. At 3.00pm on Friday, a special
Commemoration Service will be held in our assembly area. Our Student Captains will lead the Service
and all students will be in attendance. Parents involved in pickup are invited to arrive early to
participate in this moment of remembrance.
Kindergarten Orientation underway
Kindergarten 2019 commenced their transition to school today Thursday 8 November. It will run for
three weeks and finish on Thursday 22 November. It was great to see so many parents at the meet
and greet and the information session. Being interested in your child’s education is one of the
greatest gifts you could give your child.

Halloween Disco
I congratulate all of the students on the manner in which they conducted themselves during the
Halloween Disco last Friday night: all the children had a great time but were also able to maintain a
wonderful sense of cooperation and self-discipline despite the loud music, crazy costumes and
flashing lights! On behalf of all the students I thank:
Natalie Martin and the Year 6 parent helpers for organising this Halloween event and the members of
staff who came along to help with supervising the children in the hall.
Our Vegetable Garden
What a great job our Stage 3 gardeners are doing. The gardens look great and we have only just
started in this area. Look for more vegie gardens in the future. The staff loved a fresh bean salad
taken from the garden for lunch on Wednesday. Thanks to Ms Gore, Ms Borthwick and Mr Firase for
their hard work in the maintenance of the gardens. With our Kitchen/Garden program a focus in
2019, it was a positive sign of the potential this program will have with our students.
Car Parking- Malabar RSL
Please be considerate of neighbouring residents when parking in the streets surrounding the school.
In particular, do not block driveways or park on nature strips. We have also been asked to remind
parents not to park in the Malabar RSL carpark when attending a school event such as the Halloween
Disco as this space is reserved for club patrons only.
THANK YOU MORNING TEA for all helpers and volunteers, e.g. reading parents, library helpers,
Scripture, walkathon, lost property, BEAR reading, Year 6 farewell & bar-b-que helpers, P&C, canteen
helpers, class parents, plus any other parents/grandparents who have volunteered in any capacity
during this year.
Date: Tuesday 19th December
Place: Library
Time 10.30am – 11.00am
Student Leaders 2019
We take the election of year 5 students into leadership positions next year very seriously. In the
coming weeks all Year 5 students will participate in student leadership discussions on the qualities
and expectations that student leaders are expected to display. This will include what qualities make a
good leader. The Year 5 students will then be involved in a process to decide on 6 girls and 6 boys
who will be introduced to the school, with voting to take place in the coming weeks. Our student
leaders are pivotal in the success of our school and the selection process has been designed to
ascertain the best candidates. I look forward to celebrating the successful candidates on
Presentation Day. I hope to see you at Malabar as the year closes to an end.
Have a good weekend!

Principal
KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION
Kindergarten orientation dates are –
15 November – Literacy, Numeracy and Best Start
22 November – Positive Education and Gym display
These mornings will be run from 9.30am to 10.30am. Parents and children are expected to attend all
sessions. Morning tea will be provided for parents.
VISUAL ARTS SHOW
The biennial Visual Arts show will be presented on Wednesday 5th December 5.00pm – 7.00pm. This
year the artworks will be displayed in classrooms. Please drop in to the school and visit your
children's classrooms at any time between 5.00 and 7.00. The students have been creating artworks
using various techniques, inspired by picture books and great artists. We are looking forward to a
colourful display showcasing imagination, hard work and creativity. Hope to see you there!
STUDENT LEADERS FOR 2019
Each year in Term 4, we invite students in Year 5 to consider whether they have the desire and the
skills required to be student leaders as they move in to Year 6. While all students in Year 6 are seen
as leaders through the examples they set in all areas of their academic, sporting and social
behaviours, some students are given specific areas of responsibility. These specific roles include
School Captains and Vice Captains, House and Vice House Captains, SRC, Green Warriors,
Kindergarten Buddies and Library monitors.
The School Exec team each year reflects on the process to nominate and elect our school leaders and
works towards a system that is fair, unbiased and truly reflective of the capabilities of our student’s
capacity to perform well in the more formal roles they may wish to nominate themselves for. Being a
School Captain, Vice-Captain or House Captain requires students to have a level of confidence and
poise when speaking in front of large groups. They are expected to have exemplary behaviour and to
take initiative where appropriate to assist teachers and their peers.
This year, we are having a two-step process to nominate and elect our future School Captains. The
first is on Tuesday November 20th where students in Year 5 who wish to nominate themselves for a
role will spend time with Mrs Gore participating in a leadership seminar and from this, they will
present an impromptu speech to their peers in Year 6 and Year 4. This audience will participate in a
first round vote to narrow the field down to six female and six male students. The students with
the highest votes after this pre-section vote will have two weeks to “campaign” with a poster outside
Mrs Gore’s room and time to write a formal speech. The formal speeches will be held on Tuesday
December 4th in the hall in front of all students from Years 2 to 6. These students will then have the
opportunity to vote for their choice of School Captains and Vice Captains.
House Captains will be voted upon on the same day. The process to be nominated and elected for
House Captain will be less formal. Students will need to nominate themselves for the role and present
a speech to students in their house from Grades 2 to 6 who will vote for their future House Captains.
Students who have been pre-selected for the School Captain roles are also able to nominate
themselves for House Captains.
In the case where students are voted into two roles, the counting panel will refer back to student’s
nomination application where they will have communicated their order of preference for the roles
they are nominating for. These nomination forms have been given to Year 5 students today and are
due to Mrs Gore by the 15th of November.
The results will be shared with the whole school at the Presentation Day on Tuesday the 18th of
December at 11am in the grassed playground near the deck area. This is after the Infant’s assembly
and before the Primary assembly to enable all students and parents to be in attendance of this
exciting announcement.
We wish all our Year 5 candidates the best of luck!
Mrs Gore and the Stage 3 Teachers.
Thank you to all of the Kindergarten parents who
supplied food for the Kindergarten Orientation
Program morning tea.
A friendly reminder the program will continue on
Thursday the 15th and the 22nd of November and we
appreciate your continued support with supplying food.
Please bring the food to the library before school.
Many thanks,
Jennie Lawson
Feelin’ Ghouly at the
Halloween Disco On Friday 2nd November
Year 6 hosted a
spooktacular Halloween
Disco.
Despite the extremely hot weather there was
excitement among all students as they
transformed into their best blood-curdling
outfits.
Only the brave dared to enter the dark, creepy
hall where a scare fest of hairy monsters,
ghostly creatures, ferocious werewolves, lifeless zombies and evil
devils grooved to the disco beats.
A highlight of the night was the photo booth where hauntingly
fantastic characters all posed for some gruesome pictures.
Thank you to everyone who helped with the discos organization and
the amazing helpers on the night.
We also thank the
students of Malabar
Public School for
making the 2018
Halloween disco an
unBOOlievable night to
remember.
