Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran PC-32907F).son of Shri K.S. Ramaswamy. was born onSeptember 13. 1946. in Bombay. Maharashtra. Hewas granted Short Service Commission in theMahar Regiment on January 16. 1972.
Under the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement manyIndian Army units were despatched to Sri Lanka tomaintain law and order there. The Mahar. the unitof Major Parameswaran. was also sent to Sri Lankato participate in 'Op Pawan'.
On November 25. 1987. MajorParameswaran was returning with his columnfrom a search operation late in the night.Suddenly. his column was ambushed by a groupof militants. With great presence of mind heencircled them from the rear and boldly chargedon them. This completely surprised the militants.During hand- to- hand combat that followed. onemilitant shot him in the chest. Undaunted by hisgrave injury. he snatched the rifle and shot himdead. Though critically wounded he continued togive orders and inspire his men till he breathed hislast. The ambush was finally cleared. In this actionfive militants were killed and three rifles and tworocket launchers were captured.
Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran wasawarded Param Vir Chakra for the mostconspicuous bravery and supreme sacrifice.posthumously.
