Surprise!We reached the end of another year (passed quickly!) and with it a new edition of our magazine ... and comes loaded with new features.

First of all I want to introduce to you our special guest Vicky Papaioannou, from Greece, a talented artist specializing in ArtJournal (a theme that we had not yet published). Will surely love her tutorial exclusively for the magazine and more than fantastic 150 videos with tutorials that she has available on her YouTube channel.

We have a new Portuguese collaborator, Nídia Ponte (Hanifa Scraps) in the scrapbooking area, who prepared an album allusive to the Halloween, very easy to do, even for the less experienced.

And what can I say about the culinary delights of our new “Chef” Olivia Rocha? If the images are already a feast for the eyes, I can imagine the taste!

Also you’ll learn a bit more about ankylosing spondylitis and will see photos of the magnificent landscapes of Corfu.

But best left to the end ... with Christmas coming, how about an early big present in the form of a giveaway? Who is Vicky?

Hi everyone, my name is Vicky Papaioannou and I live with my family in Greece. I am happily married and we have two kids. Maria is 9 and Kostas is 6 years old. We also had a recent addition to our family, a cute little kitten called Ginger. I have a degree in Computer Science from AUTH University in Greece and a Master’s degree in Information Systems Engineering from University of Manchester, UK. However, I think that the right part of my brain is hyperactive since I constantly have inky fingers and I’m always crafting something.

Do you define yourself more a mixed media artist, an art journal artist or anything else?

I consider myself a crafter. I have always loved anything crafty and I am still learning new techniques. From painting, to jewelry making and even pottery and sewing! But my big love is paper crafts. I started as a cardmaker, having a blog and sharing my ideas through my YouTube channel and then moved on to art journaling. I do use many of the mixed media techniques there but I love that an art journal is portable and you can easily take it with you in your travels.

It kind of works as a portfolio. I like how everything is just there from the first layout to the last and you can even see for yourself how you evolve as an artist.

When did you start doing your art?

I have been painting since I can remember but I was introduced to paper crafting and scrapbooking when I was looking for a way to preserve memories of my kids. So I guess I started out around 2005, had my first blog post at 2008 and never stopped ever since! I have been sharing my art journal layouts

for the last couple of years among my card making videos and they have been really popular. I love art journaling because it combines both papers and my love for paints and different kind of art mediums.

How do you describe your artwork?

I would say it is a cardmaker’s view into art journaling. I like my layouts to have a theme and I avoid too messy and too random. I always have the general idea in my mind of what I am going to create before I start. But once I start things just

take their own way. Since I started as a cardmaker, I have tons of stamps and patterned papers and I love using my supplies in my layouts.

Where do you find inspiration?

I always choose a quote before I start a layout. I do keep a notebook with my favorite quotes, the list is growing there and I don’t know if I can ever find the time to make a layout for every one of them! Then I am building everything around that quote, using papers, stamps, colors that can bring that quote theme to life.

What are your favorite themes?

I am inspired by the seasons, so I am always making a Christmas theme, or one for spring, fall and summer. I also love to talk about things I enjoy doing in my art journals such as cardmaking or reading. Or even themes from everyday life like my cups of coffee, which is my most popular layout.

Who are your favorite designers (main references to your art)?

I love many art journal artists and although we have definitely a different style I love looking at their creations, as

they introduce me to new mediums and techniques. I admire Tim Holtz and you’ll see me using his products repeatedly in my art. I do love the work of Limor Webber, France Papillon, Rachel Black, Christy Tomlinson, Donna Downey and so many more!

Have you received any training in art or are you a self-taught? I did take painting lessons when I was young but I am not a professional artist.

What is your favorite color or colors?

Blue. All shades of it. Living in Greece I see blue all around, from the sunny sky, to clear sea waters even to blue window shutters. And when it comes to combining colors, my all time favorite combination is blue and orange. I just can’t stay away from this.

What kind of materials do you prefer to use in your creations?

In every art journal I have ever made I use paper. That’s a must. I cut them out, glue them down, create mosaics, add texture with it, you name it! I also use a lot of gel medium, gesso and acrylic paints.

When did you create your youtube channel? How many vídeos can we see from you?

I have been sharing videos on my YouTube channel since 2008You can find more than 250 how-to videos there. Most of them are in cardmaking but recently I am posting many art journal/mixed media videos too. You can actually find there a how-to video on each of my art journal layouts.

A CHRISTMASLAYOUT By: Vicky Papaioannou

Today I will walk you through a simple and easy Christmas layout that you can create on your art journal.

STEP 1: Adhere tissue paper on your art journal. I used gel medium to glue it down and covered both pages.STEP 2: Use distress inks and a blending tool and apply ink all over. Combine a couple of different inks to make it more interesting and add depth to your background

STEP 3: Use your spatula and apply gesso here and there. It might not look good now but it will at the end. You don’t want a flat and boring background on your layout, do you?STEP 4: Use distress paint and cover up the white gesso. Again use a couple of shades of the same color to add more depth. In this step I used my finger to apply the paint, for a smooth and easy application.

STEP 5: Use the stencil and apply distress ink with a blending tool.STEP 6: Use the ornament stencil on red paper and apply versamark ink through it.

STEP 7: Apply clear embossing powder and heat set. In this case I used an embossing powder that contains glitter for a sparkly effect.STEP 8: Cut out the ornaments and stick them down on your layout.

STEP 9: Stamp the string that the ornaments are hanging from. In this stage you can even glue real string.STEP 10: Use gesso with water to add highlights on the ornaments.

STEP 11: Use brown marker to add shading around the ornaments and red marker to color red the dots of the mistletoe stencil .STEP 12: Stamp your phrase. In this case I went simple and used just one of my wooden stamps that says Merry Christmas.

STEP 13: Use a brush with gesso and splatter some white drops here and there. You are done!

Snakes ElixirFill the bottle with water stained with alcohol ink purple twilight. Introduce plastic snakes. Seal the cork with hot glue.Make a bow with purple tulle around the bottle. Glue the skull on the cork with hot glue.Decorate the tulle with Starry Night Stickles.

Crow Liver Pills Paint the bottle with black acrylic paint.Glue the Graphics Fairy label with ModPodge.Cover all the bottle with ModPodge, and before it dries spread silver glitter dust.Seal the cork with hot glue.Make a bow with black tulle around the bottle. Glue the skull on the cork with hot glue.Decorate the tulle with silver glitter.

Web of Spiders LiquorFill the coffee jar with green colored hair gel.Introduce plastic spiders.Distress the label with distress ink peeled paint and glue it to the jar with ModPodge.Paint the burlap with green acrylic paint.Cover the lid of the jar with burlap and secure it with a loop of black gauze.Glue a spider on burlap.Glue the Olde Curiosity Shoppe Tag to the gauze.

Love Potion No.45Fill the bottle with water stained with alcohol ink stonewashed.Glue the Olde Curiosity Shoppe label to the bottle with ModPodge.Cover cork with gauze and glue it to the bottle with ModPodge.Glue a spider on gauze.Decorate gauze with Stickles Spiced Marmaled.

Fresh eyeballs Fill the jar with water stained with alcohol ink watermelon.Introduce plastic eyeballs.Glue the Olde Curiosity Shoppe Sticker to the jar.Paint the cork with black acrylic paint.Seal the cork with hot glue.Glue the ribbon around the cork and the spider on the top of the jar.Add Stickles Black Diamond to the top and around the jar.

Distress the edges of all the pages with Tim Holtz Distresser paper tool.Here is a view of all the sheets after wrinkle the pages and distress of the edges.

Wrinkle all the pages of the book/diary.Smooth just a little bit.

With a foam brush wet and stain all the pages with strong black tea. Let them dry overnight.Decide what you want to glue and where, on the front cover, and glue everything with a strong glue or with a heat glue gun. I glued the snake and the title (“livro de feitiços” means “book of spells” in Portuguese). The skull and bones were glued later.

Cut small pieces of tissue paper, wrinkle them and glue those pieces to the cover with ModPodge.Glue pieces also on the snake and title. How many more wrinkes you do, better. It gets a more beautiful texture.

Paint all the tissue paper with Distress Stain and Distress Ink Vintage Photo with the help of the inkssentials distress blending tool.Let it dry well.

Glue the Skull. Give an old looking to parts of the cover, letters, snake and skull with Ceramichrome Stain for Antiquing, Maple and Jade Green colors and also with goldfinger stain.Add the Metal chain and toggle clasp and Tim Holtz ring fasteners to hold the cover.

The edges of the pages were glued together with a good layer of Multi Medium Matte, and later stained with distress ink Vintage Photo.The book is ready to join the Botles of Magic Potions...

...and to decorate my chest of drawers of my home Hall! Creepy!

1 A4 Cardstock.In the largest side of the sheet, fold at 15cm and 17,3cm.Note: the aim is to create a spine with 2,2cm. When you make the crease, the crease itself occupies space, hence the next crease has to be 17,3cm. About 12,1 to 12,2cm should be left, depending on the space that the creases occupy.In the short side of the sheet score at 2cm, rotated 180 ° and score again at 2cm, leaving a space between the creases of 17cm (the height of the album).

I love this new Christmas collection by Debi Potter, so I decided to test my imagination and made two collections of cards. One in shades of blue and white and the other in shades of red and green.

Warmest Wishes w 14cmx11cm

Dry-emboss kraft cardstock, and ink the texture with Color Box Frost White. Cut out and layer two strips of pattern paper and adhere to card.Die-cut the snowman from white cardstock and the swirl from pattern paper. Adhere to card.Paint the heart, the fingers and the scarf and cover with glossy accents.Add a sequin and the sentiment. Highlight the border with white pen (fake stitch).

Cut out a rectangle of watercolor paper with 16cmx11cm. Paint with distress inks. Before they dry sprinkle with salt, and let dry. Stamp the Elf, paint with distress markers and cut the image. Die-cut the tree from pattern paper. Adhere the Elf and the tree to watercolor paper. Wrap with twine and adhere to card.Cut out the bird from pattern paper and adhere to the tree.

Die-cut the dove and layer with a rectangle of pattern paper. Adhere to a rectangle of red cardstock.Adhere to card.Add red and gold sequins. Higlight the music notes with gold stickles.

Christmas collection echo park paper co. It is an album that folds and unfolds in several parts. I’ll give you a tutorial how to build the pages. Decorate them as you like.

1 - Cut 1st cardstock in size 8 1/4 x 11” and score at 4” and 5”.

3 - Cut the 3rd cardstock in 5 3/4 x 8 1/4” size.

2 - Cut 2nd cardstock in size 8 1/4 x 11” and score at 1”,2”, 8” and 8 1/2”.

5 - Glue your 5 3/4” cardstock to the right side flap of the 2nd cardstock.

6 - The album will close like this.

4 - Glue right side of the 1st sheet to the 2nd sheet by 1” flap.

9 - Take the ribbon and attach to the backside of the album.

7 - Score the 4th cardstock (8 1/4 x 11 3/4”) at 1/2” and 6 1/8”. Fold the flaps as you see in the image.

8 - Glue the left 1/2” flap of the 4th cardstock to the right side of the 3rd cardstock.

10 - Make sure your ribbon is enough to make a bow.

11 - Glue the magnetic imans to the 3rd and 4th cardstocks as you see in the image.

12 - Glue the magnetic discs to the 4th cardstock as you see in the image. Decorate the pages as you like. Make pockets and tags...Have fun!

2 Place the strip on top of the rectangle, lined up with the inferior edge of it, right sides

together and stitch (about 1cm seam allowance).

3 Turn seam allowance down and press. 4 Fold the accent strip in half, turning it to wrong side. Press well.

5 Turn the fabrics wrong side up. In the connection of both fabrics fold the edge of

the strip 1 cm, in order that you make a hem that covers the seam that holds the two fabrics together. Stitch the whole length.

coverts the top stitch line. Pin in place.16Make a zigzag stitch all the way across

17Cut a rectangle 16cm H x 14cm W and choose the scraps of fabric for the owl. 18On the wrong side turn under 1cm of the top

Directions:

Soak the gelatin sheets in cold water. In a heavy based saucepan, pour the milk (half), cream, caramels and heat (not boiling - on low heat) until the caramels melt, stirring with a spoon. Heat half of the reserved milk and dissolve the gelatin therein. Once the caramels are melted, stir them with the dissolved gelatin until all is involved. Divide the Panna Cotta into the caramelized bowls and chill them. Refrigerate at least 6 hours (preferably overnight).

Ingredients:

• 125g of caramels Werther’s (or the same kind) • 250ml milk • 250ml cream • 5 sheets of gelatin • caramel qs

Beat mascarpone cheese and sugar together; stir whipped cream into mascarpone mixture. Beat eggwhites untill stiff peaks form and fold into the anterior mixture. Prepare the fruit and reserve.Line a rectangular tray with cling film and reserve.Fit up tiramisu this way:One layer of ladyfingers lightly soaked in coffee mixed with liqueur;Other layer of mascarpone cheese;A third layer of diced fruits;Repeat one layer of each, finishing with a last layer of ladyfingers.Refrigerate for a few hours, preferably overnight.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease that predominantly affects the sacroiliac joints and the spine, and may also affect other joints (peripheral).

respiratory movements).The term “ankylosing” relates to the fact that this disease progress to ankylosis (fusion) of the bone surfaces of the joints, leading to loss of joint mobility. After several years of disease, when not diagnosed at an early stage or without proper medication to its severity, the vertebrae and the sacroiliac joints tend to merge through bone “bridges” (in the spine are called syndesmophytes). The spine progressively loses its normal motion and may even progress to complete loss of movement resembling a “pipe”, and there is change to the normal curvature (it is very typical the increase of curvature of the spine, giving an aspect of a “hump”). These deformities are irreversible and are highly disabling for the activities of the day-to-day (pick up objects, drive, lie down, stand up ...) and can occur at an early stage of life, with very great limitations either at professional level or a personal level.May also have other symptoms accompany the vertebral pain, such as pain and swelling in other joints (“puffy” appearance), pain in the tendon insertions or ligaments (often there is pain underneath or behind the heel), ocular complaints due to uveitis (red eye without discharge, with pain and sensation of blurred vision), intestinal

SymptomsTypical symptoms are pain in the lower back and buttocks usually more pronounced overnight, disrupting sleep, that is relieved by exercise and a sense of rigidity of the spine (difficulty in performing movements) in the early morning and lasting more than 30 minutes. What is the treatment? The treatment relies on the use of anti-inflammatories. In cases where there is involvement of the peripheral joints, there are other effective medication (sulfasalazine, methotrexate, steroids infiltrations ...). Until very recently these were the only drugs available, often insufficient to treat the most severe cases, so the disease could evolve despite the medication. In the past decade have been used, with great success, biotech traits, which came to improve the quality of life of patients. Physical therapy also plays a very important role, with the primary aim to avoid the loss of joint mobility. Hydrokinesiotherapy has particular interest (exercises in warm water pools).

It is common a delay of several years (3-7 years) between the first symptoms and the appearance of typical radiographic changes of sacroiliitis. This delay in diagnosis and in initiation of treatment has the effect

Corfu is located in the Ionian Sea, in the north end, very close to the Greek mainland and Albania (2 km, the closest point). Is 60 km long and its width varies between 4 and 30 km, with an area of approximately 592 km2.Unlike many other Greek islands is covered by lush vegetation, due to the cooler climate and relatively high humidity. Olive trees seem to be everywhere, some with hundreds or even thousands of years. To point out that unlike the other Greek islands, the occupation by the Ottoman empires was relatively short lived, having not left great monuments. From 1864 she joined the newly established Greece. How to get and to know the island-practical notes

The most practical is the airway. The airport is small, having to walk to the plane. The connection is usually made through Athens, however there are charter flights and even several “low-cost”.There are also numerous ferries connecting to mainland Greece, Italy and other Greek islands (via Brindisi).The roads are acceptable and the island is known well by renting a car at very competitive prices. These are mostly of low capacity but all with air conditioning which is essential in the warm months. The road signs are in Greek but also in Latin characters which allows a good navigation with the aid of a map.

The vegetation often invades the roads, due to lack of maintenance; there are virtually no motorways, so it is advisable to move at an average speed of 50 km/h on most roads and less on narrow mountain roads.You should have cash on hand because there are relatively few ATMs on the island (there are some in the town of Corfu). However, all tourist services and most shops accept credit cards. Fuel pumps (expensive) are also rare but with half a tank is enough to visit the major sights of the island in a day or two.You find for sale olive oil, honey, wine and an alcoholic anised-flavored drink

(ouzo, typically Greek) and numerous crafts made of olive wood. These crafts are interesting, being the most expensive made from wood of century-old olive trees. There are also many pieces and crafts in silver and gold.

Is stretched between two large fortresses and partially surrounded by large walls that defended it over the centuries against several sieges, especially the Ottomans.The so-called “old town” remained relatively preserved and its center has several architectural styles dependent on the nationality of the various occupants. Again predominate the buildings of Serene Republic, many of them marked

with the winged lion of S. Marcos.The buildings are tall and the streets and lanes are narrow with a distinct Mediterranean character and southern Europe – neighbors talking through the windows, clothes drying on the street, children playing. In stores, the seller waits for customers on a bench at his door – the price is relatively fixed, not helping much haggling about the price but you should always try when purchasing multiple items. Numerous patios are visible, stones stairs, windows with flower pots. In short, is an inhabited historic city, and not yet generalized by tourism.

The large square in the city is called “Spianáda” and is in front of the old fortress. At this location stroll the inhabitants of Corfu especially on Sundays being filled with terraces and cafés.On the outskirts of Kerkyra is the peninsula of Kanoni. It is considered one of the most beautiful spots on the island – is observed in this location the islet with the monastery of Vlachéras and even closer to shore, Pontikonissi and the small monastery of Pantocrator. Right on the edge, in the same lagoon of Chalkiopoulos lies the runway.Also on the outskirts of Corfu, is located

the Kaiser´s Bridge in Perama. Was the site crossed by the German emperor to go to the Palace Achilleion. This palace is dedicated to the hero Achilles, was built in the late nineteenth century and was a favorite retreat of the Austro-Hungarian Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sissi.

coast are very scenic with mountains, mountain villages and shear cliffs overlooking the sea.In this stands out Palaiokastritsa, where is located a monastery, founded in 1255. Further north lies the castle of Angelokastro, a fort with Byzantine origin.On the northern cost is located the beach of Sidari, with interesting rock formations. In this beach is located a known trap for tourists: the Love Canal a communication between sedimentary rocks with a local legend.

Tours to neighboring islands

There are numerous tours available. It is advisable to go to the neighboring islands of Paxis and Anti-Paxis. During the trip you see Albania (there are also trips to go there) and mainland Greece.The island of Paxis, has an interesting coastline with enormous caves, visited by tour boats. Its capital, is a small town, named Gaios (a disciple of the apostle Paul, who walked there), a small fishing port.The island of Anti-Paxis has only 5km2 and is characterized by its white sandy beaches and bays with clear blue water.
