Paolo Nutini - Scream Music Video Analysis

This ELS of Hollywood helps to show where the music video is. He is becoming a Hollywood star after his 3 rd album rather than only being a national star. However due to the target audience this is not relatable as they can not afford to go to Hollywood. The target audience are D/E band of the demographic scale. Paolo used to have a niched target audience until he released his 3 rd album where his is now played regularly on radio 1. before this is was still played on radio 1 however rarely. Showing the target audience are aged 16- 29. His older albums have an older feel, therefore his target audience I feel is wider than George Ezra's. He is sometimes played on radio 2 which has a demographic of 35 and over but this demographic is more niche people that are interest into looking into music rather than just listening to what they know. Personally i feel his music is aimed more at 16-29 (radio 1 listeners) Paolo plays a lot on radio 1 especially in the Live Lounges. This helps to promote himself to get more people to his concerts. Throughout the video there are shots of average people dancing. All the people are of different ages and genders and physiographic. This could be used to attract a wider demographic. And is shown in the target audiences age range. This LS of this man dancing where he is dressed smart casual (a stereotype of the blues, folk, rock genre) the black and white links to the old fashion Hollywood feel. However Paolo is playing against this with having people dancing and wearing cloths in a modern way. Looking at the props they aren't the typical modern Hollywood style you would expect, and are older fashioned. Once again can be linked to the target audience. I feel it is very important to use interesting backgrounds to maker the visuals more interesting. This MS of Paolo shows him wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket. Leather jackets are still a key fashion item however first became most popular in the 70’s.

This ELS of Hollywood helps to show where the music video is. He is becoming a Hollywood star after his 3rd album rather than only being a national star. However due to the target audience this is not relatable as they can not afford to go to Hollywood. The target audience are D/E band of the demographic scale. Paolo used to have a niched target audience until he released his 3rd album where his is now played regularly on radio 1. before this is was still played on radio 1 however rarely. This MS of Paolo shows him wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket. Leather jackets are still a key fashion item however first became most popular in the 70’s.

This LS shows these dancers dancing in costumes (not a convention of the genre) girls are in tight leotards however they are not being used a objects just as dancer. Which I also saw in George Ezra's video. Personally I feel that having dancers in costumes doesn’t fit the genre but fits the video as is set in Hollywood where everything is acted and over the top (stereotypically). The location of this shot however is concrete and reminds me of Grease the film which was set in 1970’s.

This long shot from a black and white movie show 2 people dancing, this links to the style of Paolo as his has a blues style which is an older style of music. Therefore helps to contrast with the modern dancing. Once again fits with 1970’s theme.

In this shot Paolo is walking toward the camera while performing. The old cars behind and the roller disco in another shot link to the 70’s theme.

In the later stages of the video a skate park at skater are shown. It starts off with hem jumping over the fence. There are old fashioned film clips show of skater then cuts to modern skater.

Once again in this LS the old cars are being shown and the girl in a leotard is dancing.

This MS of the man in the limo covered in leopard print with Paolo shows weather from the 70’s, and a comedy aspect is used when the man is saying ‘we might not be in Hollywood, but we is Hollywood.’ This gives the video comedy along with the dancers. Something I have seen used a lot in music videos.

Paolo is performing as if he is at one of his concerts. I feel this is important for a music video to have, as it will make the audience want to see Paolo live. They fell they know what to expect. Also in this shot Paolo is drinking beer. As I have already said the target audience enjoy going to concerts and therefore can imagine theme themselves as Paolo at a concert listening to his music, having a good time. He is behaving responsibly which gives the impression that he is a respected man and is serious about his music. I feel the target audience also have the same attitude therefore find Paolo relatable.

I love this shot as I shows how everyone imagines the 70’s to be with the outside cinemas. This is something that is coming back into fashion. People of Paolo's target audience (students) go to these events. For example in London they do free open cinemas for students, this shows its something his target audience are doing.
