Consolidated High School District 230 School Board President Richard J. Nogal was honored with the 2018 Thomas Lay Burroughs Award for the State’s Outstanding School Board President by Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Board Member Kevin Settle in November.

Mr. Nogal has a long history of serving the local community in a collabora-tive manner that is focused first on ensuring the vision and goals of the organization are met. Mr. Nogal has served on the District 230 School

Board since 2011, six of those years as its president. Mr. Nogal’s commitment to the students of District 230 began even earlier as he was a community volunteer on the Student Services Committee for four years prior to being elected to the School Board. In addition, he also served on the partner district Palos Community Consolidated District 118 Board of Education from 2003 until 2011, including two years as its president. Further showing his commitment to the local community, Mr. Nogal has served as chairman of the Board of Direc-tors at Palos Community Hospital, as a trustee and commissioner of the Palos Fire Protection District, and chairman of the Our Lady of the Woods Parish Council. When he is not volunteering in the com-munity, he is a business litigation attorney with Goldstine, Skrodzki, Russian, Nemec and Hoff, Ltd.

“President Nogal’s leadership in District 230 captures all of the qualities the Thomas Lay Burroughs Award represents,” said Set-tle. “His whole community mindset led him to create Community Connections meetings that bring together partner school boards, mayors, police and fire chiefs, and township and county officials in dialogue to improve and uplift their communities collectively. President Nogal championed collaborative leadership in a deci-sion-making structure that welcomes the sharing of ideas and expertise of board members, administrators, teachers, staff and community members. The Board’s Education, Students Services and Finance Committees meet monthly to share insights that guide the Board’s annual goals.”

Superintendent Dr. James Gay shared that “President Nogal has led District 230 with great integrity and passion for assuring all students have equal opportunity to achieve educational excel-lence. This is evidenced by the collaborative goal-setting process he established that includes idea sharing from board members, administration, teachers and staff which has led to major district initiatives. These include the Period 2 Advisory, Enrichment and Intervention program, as well as Successful Schools - Successful Students Summits related to defining expectations for our gradu-ates, connecting with business leaders to provide job shadowing and internship opportunities, preparing student to enter the trades, making connections with social and emotional learning partners, as well as educational opportunities for families and community members regarding substance use, anxiety and de-pression, social media and relationship building.”

In accepting the award, Nogal remarked, “I am honored and humbled. I accept the award not individually but on behalf of the entire board and administration...In District 230 we work closely with our superintendent and our entire school community to establish, achieve and monitor goals and set a common vision for the benefit of our students. Our Board and superintendent

challenge each other to perform at the highest level and to seek continuous improvement throughout the district.”

Nogal is the 27th School Board president to earn this distinction. ISBE created the Burroughs Award in 1991 in memory of the late ISBE Chairman Thomas Lay Burroughs. The award recognizes extraordinary local leadership, in particular in advancing student learning and educational excellence, expanding equal educa-tional opportunities, and resolving major crises or difficulties. ISBE presents the award each November in Chicago at the Joint Annual Conference of the Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Association of School Administrators, and Illinois Associ-ation of School Business Officials.

NUTSGOhealthy living

By N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe

OVER

Nuts Lower Inflammation With every nut you eat, you are lowering your level of inflam-mation. How is this possible? Thanks to the anti-inflammatory

properties of nuts, you can enjoy a healthier lifestyle with each crunch. Nuts have phenolic compounds, fiber, vitamin E, and polyunsaturated fats. This is great news for those trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Surprisingly, nuts may also reduce cancer rates by up to 40 percent.

Nuts Can Reduce The Risk Of Heart Disease And Improve Heart HealthWhen it comes to heart health, never underestimate the far-reaching benefits of nuts. Snack on three servings a week to reduce your risk of heart disease by up to 55 percent. Want to reduce your risk of cancer? Walnuts keep blood vessels healthy and may reduce the risk of heart disease. Though classified as a legume, peanuts, which have resveratrol, are also associated with a reduction of heart disease.

Nuts Are Packed With Protein If you want to increase your protein, enjoy some nuts. Almonds and pistachios deliver 6 grams of protein per serving. Want more protein? Peanuts are a protein powerhouse with 8 grams of pro-tein per serving. Not a fan of peanuts? Chomp on cashews with 5 grams of protein. Nuts with 4 grams of protein include walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts.

Nuts Reduce Cholesterol Want to lower your cholesterol? Nuts can be your answer. Ha-zelnuts and pecans can lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad choles-terol”) and raise HDL cholesterol (the “good cholesterol”).

Life is too short to neglect nuts. Become a nut for nuts for better health!

This dreamy Frank L. Wright style* home is a true Palos Park beauty, with lots of natural light and amazing views. The owners, Palos Park residents JCG, enjoy looking at nature from the many windows and the backyard wrap around deck or entertaining fam-ily and friends by the large, brick outdoor fireplace. The surround-ing landscape is in perfect harmony with the beautiful home.

*Frank Lloyd Wright (born June 8, 1867–April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator, who designed more than 1,000 structures, 532 of which were completed. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exem-plified by Fallingwater (1935), which has been called “the best all-time work of American architecture”[1]. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. Once again, the lights glowed through the old farmhouse win-dows, inviting guests in from the dark winter night. Food, drink, friends and neighbors, and a delightful array of artistic work awaited those who attended our Christmas “Party in the House…the McCord House, that is!”

The charming staff and several board members of the McCord Cultural Center greeted Palos Park Life warmly. The annex had on proper evening attire with tables draped in black awaiting us. Mitch Hart,  of The Boissett Collection of wines, stood behind a beautiful display of private labeled and etched bottles, and the new Jean-Charles Boisset line of jewelry, ready to pour premier wines.

Across the room an inviting array of foods from local restaurants awaited guests. Ryan and Lindsey offered sandwiches, chicken parmesan and delicious meatballs from Fox’s Pub. Finger-size ham sandwiches arrived from Chicagoland Ham and camped out next to bruschetta and pasta salad from Papa Joe’s. Dan from Island Shrimp House wowed the crowd with smoked salmon and fresh shrimp. And sweet mini-cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes put a delicious end to the evening (see sidebars with this article to read more about our supporting businesses).

The McCord Gallery and Cultural CenterYou’ve driven past it a hundred times, seen the wel-coming lights at night, noticed cars during the day, and still haven’t stopped in? You are missing a gem of the Palos area! The old farmhouse, once home to early settlers and almost lost to the wrecking ball, was saved by a small group of determined residents who envisioned something amazing. That some-thing has turned into an art gallery, cultural center, classrooms, small stage venue and more as McCord Galleries continues to grow and develop. Led by a dedicated board and a small but energetic staff, the future shines bright for McCord and the artists who study, teach and create there. If you are not familiar with their programs, consider this an invitation to stop in, or go to their website at www.McCordGal-lery.org. You can also read about their history in past issues of Palos Park Life, and watch for an upcoming article featuring their spring programs, including an enticing exhibit featuring the arts of Ireland!

Mitch Hart and Boisset WinesPalos Park Life welcomed Mitch Hart to our 2017 event at McCord, and we were quick to schedule him for Party in the House this year! Mitch’s selection of wines and his easy-going, but very knowledgeable, presence makes him a favorite with our guests!

Working as an independent ambassador for Boisset wines, Mitch samples and explains their line of vari-etal wines and blends. The Boisset company believes that “when we give wine we do not offer a mere object; rather we offer an emotion, a vibration, and the promise of exceptional moments shared among friends, family and loved ones.” Watching Mitch handle, pour and explain the wine, you can easily imagine that he, too, shares their passion.

Mitch explained that one of his favorite projects is to help select wines and create presentation bottles (either by private label or actual etching on the glass) for an event such as a wedding. Wines can be selected, and presented, for the rehearsal dinner, the wedding, bridesmaid and groomsmen gifts, and even the first-anniversary party! Imagine an etched bottle created just for your special day! Clearly, Mitch and Boisset Wines offers more than a “mere object.”        The Boisset company has also launched a stunning jewelry line created by Jean-Charles Boisset. The line features many designs which play off the fruits and vines of their fields and the sun and bees that nurture the plants. The collection can be viewed at MYBOISSETCOLLECTION.COM/JEWELRY.

Neighbors greeted neighbors, friends met, and new connections were made as guests mingled over the buffet, and then mean-dered the galleries. From appearances, many beautiful, one-of-a-kind gifts appeared under the tree this year!

Guests were also attracted by a display of milkweed seeds offered to attract monarch butterflies to the area. Junior Peter Gordan, of Stagg High School, has made helping to save the monarchs a personal mission. He has created Homes4Monarchs to help spread the word about the plight of these airy beings. Read more about Peter below (and check out the December edition of PPL to see his feature!)

As the last guests lingered, and McCord staff graciously helped put the galleries back in order, calls of “Merry Christmas!” rang through the night. We at Palos Park Life would like to echo that greeting and thank all who attended and supported our year-end event. We so appreciate your support of, and interest in, the publication. It is a joy to learn and share information about the Palos area and its’ residents, and we will continue to bring you our best in content and events. Happy New Year!

Mitch Hart is available for private parties as well as charitable events. He can be contacted at [email protected]. You can read more at Hart4Wine.com.

Homes4MonarchsPeter Gordan’s interest in Monarch butterflies began at an early age. The Stagg Junior recalls reading a book about Monarchs when he was just 5 and remembers being enchanted. The book told about the Monarch’s dependence on milkweed. Not long after, a milkweed patch was discovered in their yard, a patch Peter’s mom wanted to be rid of. Peter and his brother made signs and, one day when his mom was out, they set up their protest site. Mom came home to find her sons campaigning to keep the milkweed which, of course, they did. Mom is now one of Peter’s biggest cheerleaders.

Peter directs the operation of Homes4Monarchs, “an Illinois state-registered 501©3 nonprofit dedicated to the restoration of the monarch butterfly and its native milkweed habitat,” accord-ing to its website at homes4monarchs.wixsite.com. Peter and his organization have distributed thousands of milkweed seed packets, held educational events, and continue to spread the word about the plight of Illinois’ state insect, the Monarch butterfly. We were delighted to have Peter join us at our Party in the House event. He made several contacts, which will be particularly useful as he begins to plan a senior project featuring a variety of local conserva-tion efforts, including those to save his beloved Monarchs! If you’d like more information, seed packets, or wish to donate, go to the website or contact Peter through [email protected].

Fox’s PubThink Fox’s Pub on the south side and most people think “pizza.” But when I asked Ryan, grandson of Fox’s founders Tom and Theresa Fox, and son of current owner Frank Fox, what their best dishes were he replied, “Well, pizza, sure, but our sandwiches are great and so is the Prime Rib!” Well, we can’t speak for the Prime Rib but the sandwich selection, as well as Chicken Parmesan and Meatballs that Ryan and Lindsey served at Party in the House, were great, for sure!

Fox’s is close to a southside tradition. “Grandpa Fox” opened their first location in 1963 on Western Avenue in Chicago. In 1971 Oak Lawn opened;  Orland Park in 1973 and in 2006, Mokena was added to the family business. While each location has its’ own character, they all serve great food and welcome customers, especially families, who appreciate the hands-on personal service of the Fox family. Their passion is reflected in the kind of special events offered, such as a magic show on Christmas Eve and a family-friendly New Year’s Eve party!

The Orland location is located at 9655 W. 143rd Street, Orland Park, and can be reached at 708/349-2111 or get more informa-tion at www.foxspubs.com.

Chicagoland HamThe sweet taste of Chicagoland Ham meats is no stranger to the south side. In business since 1968, their meats are beloved holiday traditions throughout the area, as well as first pick the rest of the year. They were the first to bring spiral-sliced bone-in hams to the Chicago area, and are the only place in the U.S. to get Honey Roast Beef, Pork or Turkey. Their offering at Party in the House, finger-sized ham sand-wiches on rye, were delicious! Chicagoland Ham is located at 11845 Southwest Highway in Palos Heights and can be reached at 708/448-8507. You can also visit their website at www.chicagolandham.com.

Papa Joe’sYet another favorite pizza joint on the south side is Papa Joe’s. Like Fox’s, though, their menu goes far beyond pizza! The fra-grance of fresh bruschetta filled the room at Party in the House, and Papa Joe’s offering of this delicious dish, along with their pasta salad, filled many a plate! On any night the parking area around their Orland location is hopping, and generous sized party rooms are steadily booked. Much of the traffic is “take-out.” Papa Joe’s has a generous catering menu, and also features the option of most items cold and “ready to cook at home” for that home-made taste! With facilities in both Orland Park and Lockport, they look forward to serving both your personal, party and busi-ness needs. The Orland location is at 14459 S. LaGrange Road in Orland Park and can be reached at 708/403-9099. You can also visit their website at www.papajoesrestaurant.com.

Island Shrimp HouseTim and Pat, and their son Dan, are no strangers to Palos Park Life readers. The owners of Island Shrimp House have welcomed us to their establishment and also served at several of our events. At Party in the House, son Dan chatted up guests while serving shrimp and their amazing smoked salmon, both served up in beautiful party presentation mode.

Island Shrimp House offers many party platter and catering op-tions, but a visit to their restaurant is also a great experience. The casual dining location now features a BYOB option and has added to its already generous menu Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese and Fish Ta-cos. Fish and seafood lovers are sure to find many delightful dishes to choose from. Island Shrimp is located at 12902 S. LaGrange Road in Palos Park and can be reached at 708/923-6646 or via their website at www,originalislandshrimphouse.com.

Nothing Bundt CakesConfetti! Red Velvet! Chocolate Chocolate Chip! Who would have thought just cake could come in so many delicious flavors? Noth-ing Bundt Cakes has elevated bundt cake making to new heights, and judging from how quickly they disappeared, our guests thought so, too! The popular chain, with over 260 franchised locations across the country, has resonated well with area res-idents, so much so that Orland Park owners Beth and Bob Feld-man recently opened a second location in Mokena. Using fresh

Midwest Law Group12608 S. Harlem AvenuePalos Heights IL 60463p: 708.361.7001f: 708.361.7008www.midwestlawgroup.net

Kathy Svanascini of Midwest Law Group is dedicated to providing competent legal representation while working diligently to protect your legal rights. Since 1995, Kathy and team have been committed to serving individuals and business entities with the highest level of integrity and professionalism. With extensive ex-perience in the practice areas of real estate, estate planning and business law, Kathy is proud to provide a fami-ly-focused firm in the south suburbs.

“I really have an urge to help people,” Kathy said. “Our job is to protect our clients. Helping a family get through their estate planning is very reward-ing, especially when I help them see this is not a scary process-it’s less invasive than going to the doctor!”

Kathy, a Chicago girl at heart, grew up in Park Forest and complet-ed her undergrad and law degree at DePaul University.

“When I was in law school I thought I would do litigation work,” Kathy said. “After I had my kids I realized the type of practice I wanted to focus on would focus on families. I wanted to help make the lives of families a little better.”

Staying home with her boys was very important to Kathy. When they were young, she was able to work from home part-time. Ten years ago, after her boys were in middle school and high school, she opened her first practice, The Law Offices of Kathy Svanascini. In 2019, Kathy changed the name of the firm to Midwest Law Group.

Kathy attributes much of her success to the support of her amazing staff.

“My mom was a huge influence in starting my own practice,” Kathy said. “She worked in the legal field as a legal assistant for several law firms during her career, and when I talked to her about going to law school, she put me in touch with lawyers that could support and guide me. She is my biggest supporter and still comes in once a week to keep me orga-nized. She is very proud of me!”

Meghan, Kathy’s assistant, and Jenny, a close friend from high school, also play important roles in the office. And, Kathy recently hired an addition-al support person, whose name is also Kathy.

“Meghan answers most of the questions that come through because she knows all our clients so well,” Kathy said. “She has been with me for five years and is contemplating law school. She is my right hand and came highly recommended by one of my closest friends. She handles the day-to-day opera-tions in the office.”

“Jenny, one of my best friends from high school, does some of my marketing and legal research for me. She also works with me on project jobs, includ-ing appeals and other research projects. And, she keeps me in check!”

Personal attention to clients is always a number one priority. Kathy and team respond to requests promptly and thrive on helping clients meet their objectives, whether for their family or business. Many clients are referred by friends, family members and trusted advisors who have personally worked with Midwest Law Group.

“I have known Kathy for a number of years and have used her services both professionally and personally for real estate/estate planning transactions. She has done an amazing job every time I have dealt with her. The clients I have referred also comment to me on her professionalism, which is exactly what I like to hear when referring someone. She goes above and beyond

for her clients and is responsive to all of their needs. If my clients are in need of an attorney, I refer them to Kathy.”  –Frank Panella

“Our goal is to make sure our client’s futures are protected. We treat our clients like family. We don’t have cookie cutter estate planning options. Everyone is unique,” Kathy said. “This practice that I have created has become such an important focus in my life. I have kept the goal of our practice being a family-focused firm and we are excited to see it evolve into so much more!”
