Over its long and proud history, Speight’s has produced award-winning traditional ales and beers using fine ingredients and pure New Zealand water.

In 1876 James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson set up Speight’s Brewery in Dunedin. Still on the same Rattray Street site it has occupied ever since, Speight’s Brewery has become one of Dunedin and Otago’s biggest icons – no longer just the ‘Pride of the South’, the Speight’s brand is now one of New Zealand’s most loved beers.

The Speight’s Ale Houses have become an intrinsic part of the history of Speight’s. Found within the historic brewery is the original ale house, which opened in 1999. All the superb tap ales served at The Speight’s Ale House are brewed right there on site, just as they have been since 1876. The success of the original led to the establishment of an extensive network of ale houses throughout the country.

When the original ale house was opened, the challenge given to the chefs was to produce hearty, value-for-money servings of Southern fare. This is still the case, with today’s menus still featuring Speight’s Ale House classics like seafood chowder, blue cod, lamb shanks and steak, as well as vegetarian options. All meals are expertly matched to one of the fine tap ales available, creating authentic Southern dining experiences all the way throughout the country.

The Speight’s Ale Houses mean any Kiwi can enjoy traditional Southern grub washed down with a Speight’s, but the fare remains true to its Southern values; generosity of spirit, mateship and ‘can-do’ attitude.

BREWER’S NOTESWe take great care & pride in brewing our beers & are proud to present them here to you. Why not taste the whole family - purchase an Ale House Tasting Tray, which will have a sample of each beer for you to try.

SPEIGHT’S GOLD MEDAL ALESpeight’s is an ale with a hint of “grassy” undertones that add to its complexity. It has the full fl avour of Speight’s malt & hops. 4.0%

SPEIGHT’S TRIPLE HOP PILSNERThe first thing that strikes you about the Triple Hop Pilsner is the light golden colour true to the pilsner style of beer. Being a pilsner it’s a hop dominated brew, with an initial hit of citrus fruit & fresh green hop character. 4.0%

SPEIGHT’S OLD DARKThis dark ale has roasted malt character with a hint of chocolate. The fl avour has been balanced with extra hops & rounded out with just enough sweetness. 4.0%

SPEIGHT’S DISTINCTION ALEThis dark lager style beer sets itself apart through the subtle sweetness of slightly caramelised malts with relatively little hop bitterness or fl avour. The darker speciality malts provide a more complex malty caramel fl avour that gives this brew a well rounded character. 4.0%

SPEIGHT’S CIDERA well balanced, refreshing cider. The full bodied profi le comes from the batch fermentation of juice sourced from 100% New Zealand grown apples, & is expertly coupled to a dry fi nish, which leaves you wanting more of this amber cider. 4.6%

SPEIGHT’S SUMMIT ULTRAA refreshing golden lager with a crisp fi nish. Brewed for longer it has 75% less carbs than regular beer, making it the perfect way to wash down a hard workout with your mates. 4.0%

SPEIGHT’S MID ALESpeight’s MID Ale is brewed using the specialty malts crystal, caramalt & chocolate malt, enough to give the beer a smooth caramelised malty fl avour & aroma. The sweetness provided by the malts is balanced by an addition of hops to the kettle boil to release their hoppy bitterness. 2.5%

SPEIGHT’S EMPIRE IPAOur brewers decided to bring back an old favourite. Speight’s Empire is brewed with a generous addition of Kohatu hops to deliver spicy aromas & a clean bitterness. 5.5%
