We generally think of rats as vermin and nasty creatures. However, the Chinese regard the Year of the Metal Rat as auspicious: with spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, flexibility, & vitality! So, I’m looking forward to an auspicious rat of a year for our Folk Music Club. I searched the ‘font of all knowledge’ for songs about rats and came up with: Frog went a courting (originating from a 16 th Century Scottish folk song featuring “Uncle Rat”), Stanley the Rat (Cyril Tawney), Uncle Rat (Altan), Bad Rats (John Stewart), Caged Rat (Soul Asylum), I think I smell a Rat (The White Strips), Rats (Ghost), Rat trap (The Boomtown Rats), Dirty Rat (The Zutons), Surf Rat (The Rumbles), Big Rat (The Wedding Present), My pet Rat St. Michael (Mark Eitzel), and A Rat in her pocket (Broadside Electric). So maybe there’s a theme for one night in the future! Writing about themes your Committee has come up with a fun calendar of theme nights through the autumn. Plenty of opportunities for everyone to contribute. If you have any ideas for Club nights, be sure to pass these on to one of the Committee members for the winter-spring calendar. PALMERSTON NORTH FOLK MUSIC CLUB NEWSLETTER March - June President's Message

Craig’s Cadence

The Beginning of Year JAM for 2020 was a great start to the year – a very good turn-out, with folk songs

and tunes a plenty.

2020 is the Chinese Year of the Rat. We generally think of rats as vermin and nasty creatures. However, the

Chinese regard the Year of the Metal Rat as auspicious: with spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, flexibility, &

vitality! So, I’m looking forward to an auspicious rat of a year for our Folk Music Club.

I searched the ‘font of all knowledge’ for songs about rats and came up with:

Frog went a courting (originating from a 16th Century Scottish folk song featuring “Uncle Rat”), Stanley the

Rat (Cyril Tawney), Uncle Rat (Altan), Bad Rats (John Stewart), Caged Rat (Soul Asylum), I think I smell a Rat

(The White Strips), Rats (Ghost), Rat trap (The Boomtown Rats), Dirty Rat (The Zutons), Surf Rat (The

Rumbles), Big Rat (The Wedding Present), My pet Rat St. Michael (Mark Eitzel), and A Rat in her pocket

(Broadside Electric). So maybe there’s a theme for one night in the future!

Writing about themes – your Committee has come up with a fun calendar of theme nights through the

autumn. Plenty of opportunities for everyone to contribute. If you have any ideas for Club nights, be sure

to pass these on to one of the Committee members for the winter-spring calendar.

Also, be sure to attend Concerts by visiting musicians Jordan Brodie on 27th March, Wandrella on 15th

May, Good Habits on 12th June & Thomas Loefke on 3rd July – these are all top quality performers and are

well worth coming to see & hear.

With the AGM coming up on April 17th, think about joining the Committee for the next term &/or any

positive new ideas for change in Club activities, for members to discuss at the meeting.

Here’s a quote I like: “The best way to get to know any bunch of people is to go and listen to their music.”

CONCERTS COMING UP – make a note in your calendars – these are top quality performers!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
27th March – Jordan Brodie
Award winning Fingerstyle guitarist and composer Jordan Brodie, is regarded as “one of the best young guitar players in Australia”. With his fine sense of showmanship and technical virtuosity, Jordan is well on his way to a flourishing solo career. Based in Cairns, Jordan, a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music released his new album “In Good Company” in March 2018 through MGM distribution. The album explores elements of folk, jazz, and classical music and draws on old and new inspirations such as Emil Ernebro, Julian Lage, Ralph Towner and Tommy Emmanuel.
He is known to dazzle audiences with his fingerstyle technique. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
15th May – Wandrella
Come along for a wonderful concert by folk duo Gill and Kate, known as Wandrella. Wandrella play a mix of clever „covers with a twist‟ and original songs which reflect their classical roots and eclectic musical influences. Kate has played solo Celtic and classical guitar and has opened for the Arizona Smoke Review in the UK and Paul Obana Jones in NZ. She was influenced by the finger picking styles of Stefan Grossman and Gordon Giltrap. She also plays in the duo "String Fusion‟ with
Bill Nicholson, recording an album in 2015. Gill recorded her first album “Colour Outside the Lines” in 2004. She has played and recorded several songs with local musician Kevin Watson and in 2016 teamed up with local musician Simon Burgess
12th June – Good Habits
Good Habits are an eclectic indie-folk band from Manchester, UK creating immersive, multimedia gigs and projects.Formed of Singer-Cellist and Songwriter Bonnie Schwarz & international Klezmer accordionist, Pete Shaw, the band take their recent venture as a duo, touring new Zealand Jan-March 2020. Sitting between folk and pop, the eclectic duo present an upbeat yet
intimate sound-world of musical storytelling. Pete is an experienced performer who bases his style around many different folk influences; from Irish to Klezmer, Pete has performed around Europe and the United States of America.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We are pleased to have the opportunity to welcome Thomas back to the club – he was extremely well received the last time he visited us. Don’t miss him this time through!

3rd July – Thomas Loefke

Islands in the North Atlantic, like Tory Island - the Irish island of legend and myth, the Hebridean Island of Staffa or the wild archipelago of the Faroe Islands situated between the Shetlands and Iceland - these are the places where harpist and photographer Thomas Loefke spends a considerable amount of time every year to compose music. Dramatic coastal landscapes, the wide open space of the Atlantic ocean and the ever changing sky reflect in the pieces of music written there. The tunes are accompanied by photographs Thomas took during his travels to the islands and in his solo programme these “Northern Isles pictures” are part of the show.

Things of note in the Events Calendar: On March 13th Nigel is teaching another Celtic Tune by Ear, learning by ear is a great skill to have. On May 8th Keith will bring us another of his informative Guitar Workshops.
