ST. PAUL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH MANY CULTURES, MANY COUNTRIES, MANY LANGUAGES IN ONE BODY: ST. PAUL’S FAMILY

TODAY’S GOSPEL When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone should say to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.’” So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it.

STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE

“Pilate again said to them, ‘Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?’ And they cried out again,

    ‘Crucify him.’”- Mark 15:12-13

Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the strength and courage to stand up for those in need of our help.

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

    GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would

aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

Mark's account of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem is more restrained and less victorious in tone than the other gospel accounts. In keeping with Mark's gospel as a whole, it forms part of the relentless journey of Jesus, the suffering Messiah, towards Jerusalem the place of his death. The longed-for liberation will come about in Jerusalem, through powerlessness, suffering and death rather than through the exercise of might and power. Jesus went to Jerusalem knowing full well what awaited him--betrayal, rejection, and crucifixion. The people of Jerusalem, however, were ready to hail him as their Messianic King!

awaited him—betrayal, rejection, and crucifixion. The people of Jerusalem, however, were ready to hail him as their Messianic King! Little did they know what it would cost this king to usher in his kingdom. Jesus' entry into Jerusalem astride a colt was a direct fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy of Zechariah (9:9): Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, and riding upon a colt. The colt was a sign of peace. Jesus enters Jerusalem in meekness and humility, as the Messianic King who brings victory and peace to his people. That victory and peace would be secured in the cross and resurrection which would take place in a matter of days at the time of Passover. Psalm 24 is another prophetic passage which echoes this triumphal procession of the King of glory: Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. Jesus Christ came to bring us the kingdom of God. He is the true King who offers peace, joy, and everlasting life for those who accept his kingship. For Reflection: Do you give the Lord Jesus full reign in your heart and in your home? And do your walls echo with the praise of his glory?

    HER ESSENTIAL WISDOM—A CALL TO

    SERVE

“And today, it is the same Christ, the same Jesus, the same today in our poor people, who are unwanted, unemployed, uncared for, hungry and naked and homeless. They are useless to the state or to socitety, and nobody has time for them. And it is you and I as Christians who, worthy of that love of Christ, if our love is true, must find them. We must help them, they are there for the finding.”—Mother Teresa’s words.

HOLY WEEK PRAYER Dear Lord Jesus, by Your Passion and Resurrection You brought life to the world. But the glory of the Resurrection came only after the sufferings of the Passion. You laid down Your life willingly and gave up everything for us. Your body was broken and fastened to a Cross, Your clothing became the prize of soldiers, your blood ebbed slowly but surely away, and Your Mother was entrusted to the beloved disciple. Stretched out on the Cross, deprived of all earthly possessions and human aid, You cried out to Your Father that the end had come. You had accomplished the work given You, and You committed into His hands, as a perfect gift, the little life that remained to You. Lord, teach me to accept all afflictions after the example You have given. Let me place my death in Yours and my weakness in Your abandonment, Take hold of me with Your love, that same foolish love that knew no limits, and let me offer myself to the Father with You so that I may rise with You to eternal

    life. Amen.

close to you, He loves you, He is

They will celebrate their Sacraments at the Ester Vigil. Welcome them to our St. Paul’s Family.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT DURING THE EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

AND ON THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

The Blessed Sacrament, or the Body and Blood of Christ, is a

devotional name used in the Roman Catholic Church, to refer to the

altar bread and altar wine after it has been consecrated at celebration

of the sacrament of the Eucharist. Christians in these traditions

believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic elements

of the bread and wine and some of them, therefore, practice

Eucharistic adoration. The Blessed Sacrament may be received by

Catholics who have undergone First Holy Communion (i.e., given by a

priest or deacon or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion

and immediately consumed by the communicant) as part of the

Liturgy of the Eucharist during Mass. Roman Catholics believe that the

soul of the person receiving the Eucharist should be in a "state of

grace", i.e., have no mortal sin in their soul at the time of communion

(Matt 5:23-24). The Blessed Sacrament can also be exposed on an

altar in a monstrance. Rites involving the exposure of the Blessed

Sacrament include Benediction and Eucharistic adoration. According to Catholic theology, the host, after the Rite of Consecration, is no longer bread, but the Body

and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ, who is transubstantiated in it. Catholics believe that Jesus is the

sacrificial Lamb of God prefigured in the Old Testament Passover. Unless the flesh of that Passover

sacrificial lamb was consumed, the members of the household would not be saved from death. As the

Passover was the Old Covenant, so the Eucharist became the New Covenant. (Matthew 26:26-28), (Mark

    14:22-24), (Luke 22: 19-20), and (John 6:48-58)
