    Palestine Election

Jerusalem (CNN) -- The Palestinian Authority is planning to hold overdue elections this year, amove seen as a reaction to the political discontent taking hold across the Arab world.

Officials said the authority will hold legislative and presidential elections no later thanSeptember in the West Bank and Gaza. The announcement comes a few days after officials saidthey intend to hold local elections in the West Bank and Gaza.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, the secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said pollswill be held "to satisfy the will of the Palestinian people."

Palestinian legislator Hanan Ashrawi said the Palestinians believe "it's high time" for polls"because we need to re-establish the legitimacy of our institutions through elections."

"We are a big nation, we have lots of people with potential and ability and integrity and charismaand national commitment and I think we should come up with leadership that will do the job,"she told CNN.

Palestinians regard these moves as a response to ferment in the Arab world -- street outrage thatsparked the overthrow of strongmen in Egypt and Tunisia, a government change in Jordan, and apromise in Algeria to end the emergency rule there. Also, leaders across the Arab world areenvisioning reforms to address grassroots economic grievances.

The election announcement was also made amid a persistent focus on resolving Palestiniandisputes with Israel.

In another development on Saturday that clouds the direction of Israeli-Palestinian talks, chiefPalestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat, the face of the Palestinian people to many in the West, resigned from his post.

The election announcement comes amid a deep political schism.

The West Bank government of the Palestinian Authority is dominated by the Fatah party ofPresident Mahmoud Abbas, and Gaza is ruled by the rival Islamist group Hamas.

It's unclear now whether the polls will be held in Gaza since the Hamas movement rejects theauthority of the Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called the plan for elections "invalid and illegal," claimingthat Palestinian Authority leaders President Mahmoud Abbas and Salam Fayyad lack thelegitimacy to make such a move.

He said that political reconciliation between Palestinians was necessary before elections could beheld and characterized the announcement as a move by the Palestinian Authority to prevent thewave of revolutionary changes taking place in the region from spreading to the Palestinians.

But Ashrawi said the Palestinian Authority is trying to persuade Hamas to participate in electionsand believes elections would help the state address its concerns with Israel.

"We are preparing also for statehood and we believe this is an instrument for national unity -- soall these things made it imperative that we do have elections between now and September," she

    said.

The vote would mark the first time elections have been held in the Palestinian territories since2006.

In that year, legislative elections brought Hamas into power and led to international sanctionsagainst the Palestinian Authority until Hamas agrees to the renunciation of violence, acceptanceof previous agreements between the Palestinian Authority and Israel, and the recognition ofIsrael.

Various attempts at reaching an accord through Palestinian unity talks have ended in deadlock.

Israel wields ultimate authority in the West Bank despite significant local autonomy there. Israelwithdrew its troops and citizens from Gaza in 2005, but attacks by Gaza-based militants on theJewish state have prompted tough Israeli military responses and a stiff economic embargo.

"We are undergoing a serious political crisis given the fact that Israel is continuing settlementactivities -- there are no negotiations and there is no international will to hold Israelaccountable," said Ashrawi, who's also a member of the Fatah executive committee.

Dear Larry, thank you for your kind words.I would only suggest let us refiarn from tooaggrandizing compliments lest the chest is growing too big to leave space for thought There is animportant observation in John York's entry: I think that what is being done in terms of theMiddle East peace process is not unlike turning the running of a mental hospital over to itsinmates.Thesepeople cannot make peace for the very simple reason that they are locked inside asituation that has, time and time again, clearly demonstrated their inability to do so. They are allprisoners of the system .I would like to add the following:The boundaries of the hospital run byecstatic crackpots are not limited to the Middle East. What happens on the right wing of the USis no less reckless and crazy. And one thing is VERY IMPORTANT: in Netanyahu's count theAmerican Barry Goldwater -Tea-Party right is enough to counterweight the sissy-Democratswith their sissy president and the spineless Europe and its sissy-morals (which more or less at

least officially descends from Emmanuel Kant and Hillel the Elder). So postulating Iran-Israelproblem axis without discussing the new Orwellian winds in US and the immanent weakness ofEurope contributes to narrowing the scope of possible levers to avert the Israeli madness. Let uslook how, for instance, Gershom Gorenberg's book Unmaking Israel is discussed in theCommentary by Lazar Berman (not the late pianist). Mr Berman starts with the following: Thecentral question in the debate over Israels future is this: Can it remain both Jewish anddemocratic? Israels defenders answer with an enthusiastic yes. And here are the last, concluding

words of Mr. Berman: The only enthusiastic audience for The Unmaking of Israel will likely be

found among those who are always eager for a book by a Jew they can use as a shield against acharge of anti-Semitism as they array themselves for ideological battle against the Jewish state.Commentary adds a short profile of Mr. Berman: Lazar Berman is program manager of theforeign and defense policy studies department at the American Enterprise Institute. SoCommentary publishes a review that is totalitarian in its whole essence: the defendants of Israel

(the good people) say everything is OK with Israel, and the others are not only wrong, they arefoes. The very notion that SOMEBODY CARES FOR ISRAEL'S FUTURE (as Gershom sodoes with such a dignity) AND THEREFORE RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT ISRAEL'SWAYS is declared hostile. CARE IS HOSTILE. Remember? Ignorance is strength - ?It is thetrue PRAVDA 1947 article. What we only lack here is the Gulag looming somewhere around, perhaps in the new (actually old as Tana ch) form of eternal poverty and excommunication. Sothe Iran-Israel axis starts somewhere in Pennsylvania (where Netanyahu morphed into right-wingAmerican) and HAS to be followed around the globe. Because the Israelis trapped under theimmature governors look with eagerness to the philosophically truer path, linking their (our)scandalized identity with some wise sobriety, for the sake of oursurvival.Witall best wishes -

I was hoping for a clear debate with logical arguments, but instead this was the closest to ayelling match that I've seen at IQ2. It seemed yet another example of why the situation in theMiddle East has not been resolved: emotions far outrun logic. If anyone has any suggestionsabout where to get a clear-eyed unbiased view of the topic, I'd be very grateful.

One could make the very same argument, but substitute Israel with Arab, or Islamist, orPalestinian. The problem is the shrill nature of the debate, with people on both sides acting as ifthis a "either-or" zero-sum game. IT'S NOT. I encourage people to check out the URL I haveattached. It's not World War II, where one side was a clear aggressor, but people frame it as such. And thatprevents people from looking at the facts and moving forward. BOTH sides have committed warcrimes, murdered, etc. People on the ground simply want to live in peace, and shrill commentssuch as the one posted by Jason LeVeck does nothing to enable that.BTW, I think America SHOULD be more balanced, and stop letting Israel get away fromresponsibility. We do need to stop military funding. We need to stand up for a true justice- aTWO-state solution...which is in Palestine's, Israel's and ultimately and most importantly inAMERICA's interest.

The palestinians have not set back a peace process of which never was more than a dog and ponyshow. You cannot negotiate peace with murderers and warmongers, basically what i'm sayingyou cannot have peace with somebody who is hellbent of wiping you out. My country, the USAshould be ashamed of having been on the wrong side of history and turned a blind eye to themassacres and genocide carried out by israel all these years and also the fact of using a corruptmedia to carry on with the charade and brainwash countless Americans against the facts. Thezionist's mission has always been to wipe out these other people and take by force much moreland than they already have been given. Bottom line is that if you wanna personally be on theright side of things you will fight against murdering civilians and specifically babies andchildren. There is no justification for it no matter what any BS logic somebody tries to apply tothat reality. You either condone murdering people and destroying their lives and homes or youdo not. There is no other plank to this, it is simple.

Malala's global voice stronger than ever

CNN Films' "Girl Rising"tells the stories of extraordinary girls from across the globe and the

power of education to change the world. Watch June 16 on CNN International.

(CNN) -- Six months ago, Malala Yousafzai was lying in a hospital bed, recovering from aTaliban attack in which she was shot point-blank in the head and neck.

The shooting was meant to silence, once and for all, the outspoken Pakistani teenager who haddared to defy the Taliban's ban against girls in school.

But it backfired: Instead of silencing the 15-year-old, the attack only made her voice morepowerful.

Malala's story has raised global awareness of girls' education, a cause she has championed for

years. And now that she's out of the hospital andback in school, she is determined to keepfighting for equality. She will be speaking at the United Nations this summer, and her memoir isset to be published later this year.

"God has given me this new life," she said in February, her first public statementsince theshooting. "I want to serve the people. I want every girl, every child, to be educated."

Worldwide, there are66 million girls out of school, according to UNESCO -- many more thanboys, who don't have to face the samediscrimination and obstaclesthat girls do in somecountries.

After hearing of Malala's shooting, however, more people have become aware of the disparityand joined her fight. Three million people across the world signed the "I am Malala" petition todemand universal girls' education. World leaders and celebrities such as Madonna and AngelinaJolie have voiced their support and helped raise money for the cause. And in Pakistan, there havebeenrallies and calls for change.

"It seems that Malala's courage has awoken Pakistan's silent majority who are no longer preparedto tolerate the threats and intimidations of the Pakistan Taliban," said former British PrimeMinister Gordon Brown, a U.N. special envoy for global education.

Malala's crusade started years before the shooting, when she started writing a blog for the BBC

about life in Pakistan's conservative Swat Valley. Her father, Ziauddin, continued to operated aschool there despite a Taliban edict that girls in the region are banned from getting an education.

In her blog,Malala talked openlyabout the challenges and fears and threats her family faced. Atfirst, she wrote anonymously, but she eventually became a public figure, giving on-camerainterviews with CNN and other news outlets.

"I have the right of education," she saidin a 2011 interview with CNN. "I have the right to play.I have the right to sing. I have the right to talk. I have the right to go to market. I have the right tospeak up."

The media attention drew the ire of the Taliban, which says it was behind Malala's shooting in

October. She was riding home in a van with some of her schoolmates when masked men stoppedthe vehicle and demanded to know which one of them was Malala. When Malala was identified, the men opened fire on her and two other girls, both of whom also survived their injuries.

"We do not tolerate people like Malala speaking against us," a Taliban spokesman said after theshooting.

Malala was critically injured in the attack, but she suffered no permanent brain injuries. Sheunderwentseveral successful surgeriesin Pakistan and the United Kingdom, where she now livesafter her father wasgiven a jobwith the Pakistani Consulate.

In March, she went back to schoolfor the first time since the attack, attending an all-girls highschool in Birmingham, England.

And while she recovers from her injuries, she is continuing to raise awareness and money foreducation. Last month, sheannounced a $45,000 grantto a fund that was set up in her name --and the first to benefit will be girls from the Swat Valley.

"We are going to educate 40 girls, and I invite all of you to support the Malala Fund," Malalasaid in a video that was played at the Women in the World summit in New York. "Let us turn theeducation of 40 girls into 40 million girls."

Jolie, a U.N. special envoy, will be donating $200,000 to the Malala Fund, according to Womenin the World. The fund was set up by the Vital Voices Global Partnership, a nongovernmentalorganization founded in 1997 by Hillary Clinton.

"In parts of the Indian subcontinent, Afghanistan and Africa, intimidation and violence are thedaily reality of life for many girls who want to go to school and the many educators who want toteach them," Brownwrote in a recent op-edfor CNN.com. "Even today, five months afterMalala's shooting in the Swat Valley, her school friends remain in fear of violence simply forattempting to return to school."

On July 12, her 16th birthday, Malala will speak to the United Nations about the issue.

Since her shooting, she has become the face of girls' education,a global symbol. She has beennominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and last year she was selected as arunner-up for Timemagazine's Person of the Year.

"She is the daughter of the whole world,"her father told CNN. "The world owns her."

(CNN) -- It began with a ride home from school on Tuesday, October 9.

Gunmen halted the van ferrying Malala Yousafzai through her native Swat Valley, one of themost conservative regions in Pakistan. They demanded that other girls in the vehicle identify her.Malala had faced frequent death threats in the past.

Some of the girls pointed her out. At least one gunman opened fire, wounding three girls. Twosuffered non-life-threatening injuries, but bullets struck Malala in the head and neck.

The bus driver hit the gas. The assailants got away.

Malala was left in critical condition. An uncle described her as having excruciating pain andbeing unable to stop moving her arms and legs.

Doctors fought to save her life, then her condition took a dip. They operated to remove a bulletfrom her neck. After surgery, she was unresponsive for three days.

Now, it is nothing short of a miracle that the teen blogger, who fights for the right of girls to getan education, is still alive and even more astounding that she suffered no major brain or nervedamage.

In hardly more than four weeks, she went from an intensive care unit in Pakistan, showing nosigns of consciousness, to walking, writing, reading -- and smiling -- again in a hospital in theUnited Kingdom.

Less than three months after being gunned down, she was discharged from the hospital tocontinue her rehabilitation at her family's temporary home. Her father is now employed at the

    Pakistani Consulate in Great Britain.

On Wednesday, doctors announced thatshe is expected to undergo groundbreaking surgeryinBirmingham, England to repair her skull.

And beyond her hospital room, a world sympathetic with her ordeal has transformed her into aglobal symbol for the fight to allow girls everywhere access to an education.

The United Nations even declared November 10, Malala Day as a day of action to focus on"Malala and the 32 million girls like Malala not at school."

In January 2009, the militants issued an edict ordering that no school should educate girls.Malala wrote in her online diary about intimidation tactics the Taliban used in the Swat Valley innorthwest Pakistan to coerce girls into not going school.

They included house raids to search for books, and Malala had to hide hers under her bed.

The extremists took issue with her writings and threatened to kill her.

"I was scared of being beheaded by the Taliban because of my passion for education," she toldCNN last year.

Right after her shooting, her family kept a low profile, for fear they could be next. The militantsvowed that if Malala survived, they'd go after her again.

"We will certainly kill her," a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban said.

    Global outpouring of support

The bloodletting sparked outrage inside Pakistan against the radical Islamist group, whichcontinues to wield influence in parts of the country. Around the world, the young blogger hasbecome a poster child for a widespread need to permit girls to get an education.

Initially, supporters in Pakistan gathered for small vigils to pray for Malala's recovery.Government officials in Peshawar, the main city in the northwestern region where Malala isfrom, observed a minute of silence in her honor.

Public support snowballed, and thousands of people in Pakistan and elsewhere attended rallieshonoring her courage.

Protesters in Karachi carried posters and banners reading: "Malala, our prayers are with you" and"Shame on you, Taliban."

The airwaves filled with leaders and commentators who publicly got behind her, and journalistsclosely followed her story, drawing death threats from the Taliban for their coverage.

Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani took a stand from Malala's hospital, declaring: "We

    refuse to bow before terror."

Pakistan's first female foreign minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, decried the attempted assassinationas "a wake-up call (to) a clear and present danger."

Interior Minister Rehman Malik dubbed Malala "the pride of Pakistan" and announced that herlocal school would be renamed for her, changing from "Khushal Public School" to "MalalaPublic High School."

Authorities in Swat renamed a college after her. Malala later requested that schools not be namedfor her, to prevent them from becoming prominent targets for the Pakistani Taliban.

The United Nations launched a campaign for girls' education named "I am Malala." Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack and praised Malala's cause.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton commended the blogger's bravery; Actress Angelina Joliedonated $50,000 to a charity in Malala's name. And singer Madonna shouted her name from astage, dedicating a song to her.

Malik proclaimed that the two other girls injured in the attack on Malala -- Kainat Riaz Ahmedand Shazia Ramzan -- will be honored with the third-highest military award, the Star of Courage. It is not normally given to civilians.

Gordon Brown and Malala galvanize action

"Pakistan has a new heroine and a new cause -- agirl's right to education," former British PrimeMinister Gordon Brown wrote inan opinion piece published by CNN.

Brown, who heads up the "I am Malala" campaign in his role as United Nations special envoy onglobal education, toured Pakistan to boost education with international funding and localinitiatives. It was his office that declared Malala Day.

After her shooting, Brown visited schools, including hers. He talked education for three dayswith Pakistan's president, Cabinet ministers, educational nongovernmental organizations, donors

and a covey of U.N. charities.

Malala's path from near mortal wound to recovery

In addition to removing the bullet, doctors extracted a piece of skull to relieve pressure onMalala's brain because of swelling. Malala was taken by helicopter from one military hospital inPakistan to another, where doctors placed her in a medically induced coma, so an air ambulancecould fly her to Great Britain for treatment.

"She is lucky to be alive," Dr. Dave Rosser, the medical director of University Hospitals inBirmingham, UK, told reporters after her arrival.

Then came the light at the end of the tunnel. Examinations revealed that Malala suffered nomajor neurological damage.

More than a week after being shot a world away, Malala got back on her feet again, able to standwhen leaning on a nurse's arm at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Eager tocommunicate, she wrote sentences on paper -- she couldn't talk at first because of a tracheotomy.

"Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make

excellent progress in her recovery," Rosser said on her release.

She has returned to her family and continues therapies as an outpatient at the hospital where shewill undergo further surgery on her skull.

    Chasing the perpetrators

Malik, the Pakistani interior minister, quickly placed a $1 million bounty on the head ofPakistani Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan, after he claimed responsibility for Malala'sattack on behalf of the group.

Police immediately took the van driver and the school guard into custody for questioning androunded up dozens in the course of the investigation.

Arrests made in shooting of Pakistani schoolgirl Malala

They have identified the shooters as two boys, but their main suspect is an adult, who the policesay drove the youths to the scene -- Atta Ullah Khan, 23. All three were at large.

In an interview with CNN,Khan's sister apologized to Malalafor his alleged involvement.

"What he did was intolerable," Rehana Haleem said. "I don't consider Atta Ullah my brother

    anymore."

    She called Malala her sister.

    What's next for Malala?

After regaining strength, Malala is now set to endure more surgery. Doctors at Queen Elizabethhospital will replace the piece of skull extracted in Pakistan. Her lead doctor, Dr. Rosser, "doesnot envisage any difficulties" in a pair of operations to repair her skull or fix the hearing in herleft ear, he said Wednesday.

Malala is no stranger to recognition, and her ordeal has boosted it to global proportions.

Pakistan's Malala: Global symbol, but still just a kid

She has penned her online diary in cooperation with the BBC in the past, and has spoken to othermedia, including CNN. At home, her writings led to her being awarded Pakistan's first NationalPeace Prize in late 2011.

    Early life

Malala Yousafzai was born into aMuslimfamily ofPashtun ethnicityin July 1997 and given herfirst name, Malala, meaning "grief stricken",[12]afterMalalai of Maiwand, aPashtunpoetess andwarrior woman.[24]Her last name,Yousufzai, is that of a large Pashtun tribal confederation that

is predominant in Pakistan'sSwat Valley, where she grew up. At her house inMingora, she livedwith her two younger brothers, her parents, and two pet chickens.[4]She affectionately referred tothe region as "my Swat."[12]

Yousafzai was educated in large part by her father,Ziauddin Yousafzai, who is a poet, schoolowner and an educational activist himself, running a chain of schools known as the KhushalPublic School, named after a famousPashtunpoet,Khushal Khan Khattak.[25]She once stated toan interviewer that she would like to become a doctor, though later her father encouraged her tobecome a politician instead.[4]It has also been indicated that she may have wanted to be apilot.[26]Ziauddin referred to his daughter as something entirely special, permitting her to stay upat night and talk about politics after her two brothers had been sent to bed.[27]

Yousafzai apparently started speaking about education rights as early as September 2008. Herfather took her toPeshawarto speak at the local press club. "How dare the Taliban take away mybasic right to education?" Yousafzai told her audience in a speech that was covered bynewspapers and television channels, throughout the region.[28]

At the beginning of 2009, Yousafzai had a chance to write for BBCUrduwhen her father,Ziauddin, was asked byAbdul Hai Kakkar, a BBC reporter out of Pakistan, if any women at his

school would write about life under the Taliban. At the time, Taliban militants led byMaulanaFazlullahwere taking over the Swat Valley, banning television, music, girls education,[29]andwomen from going shopping.[5]Bodies of beheaded policemen were being hung in townsquares.[29]At first, a girl named Aisha from her father's school agreed to write a diary, but thenthe girl's parents stopped her from doing it because they feared Taliban reprisals. The onlyalternative was Yousafzai, four years younger than the original volunteer, and in seventh grade atthe time.[30]Editors at the BBC unanimously agreed.[29]It is unclear whether Yousafzai or herfather first suggested that she write for the BBC.

We had been covering the violence and politics in Swat in detail but we didnt know muchabout how ordinary people lived under the Taliban, Mirza Waheed, the former editor of BBC

Urdu, said. Because they were concerned about Yousafzai's safety, BBC editors insisted that sheuse a pseudonym.[29]Her blog would be published under the byline "Gul Makai" ("corn flower"in Urdu),[31]a name taken from a character in a Pashtun folktale.[32][33]

I had a terrible dream yesterday with military helicopters and the Taleban. I have had such dreams since thelaunch of the military operation in Swat. My mother made me breakfast and I went off to school. I was afraidgoing to school because the Taleban had issued an edict banning all girls from attending schools.

    11/21

Only 11 pupils attended the class out of 27. The number decreased because of Taleban's edict. My three friendshave shifted to Peshawar, Lahore and Rawalpindi with their families after this edict.

On my way from school to home I heard a man saying 'I will kill you'. I hastened my pace and after a while Ilooked back if the man was still coming behind me. But to my utter relief he was talking on his mobile andmust have been threatening someone else over the phone.

On 3 January 2009, Yousafzai's first entry was posted to the BBC Urdu blog that would latermake her famous. She would hand-write notes and then pass them on to a reporter who wouldscan and e-mail them.[29]The blog captures Yousafzai's troubled psychological state during theFirst Battle of Swat, as military operations take place, fewer girls show up to school, and finally, her school shuts down.

In Mingora, the Taliban had set an edict that no girls could attend school after 15 January 2009.They had already blown up more than a hundred girls schools.

[29]In the days leading up to theban, Yousafzai's school principal had instructed her not to wear school uniforms anymore, butrather plain clothes that would not attract attention. Instead, Yousafzai wrote in her blog, "I

decided to wear my favourite pink dress. Other girls in school were also wearing colourfuldresses and the school presented a homely look."[12]

The night before the ban took effect was filled with the noise of artillery fire, waking Yousafzaimultiple times. The following morning, she woke up late, but afterwards her friend came overand they discussed homework as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. That day,Yousafzai also read for the first time excerpts from her blog that had been published in a localnewspaper. Her father, Ziauddin, recalled that someone had come up to him with the diarysaying how wonderful it was, but he could only smile and not tell them it was actually written byhis daughter.[12]

    Banned from school

After the ban, the Taliban continued to destroy schools in the area. On 19 January, Yousafzaiwrote "Five more schools have been destroyed, one of them was near my house. I am quitesurprised, because these schools were closed so why did they also need to be destroyed?"[34]ButYousafzai did not stop thinking about her education. Five days later in her blog, she wrote aboutstudying for her exams: "Our annual exams are due after the vacations but this will only bepossible if the Taliban allow girls to go to school. We were told to prepare certain chapters forthe exam but I do not feel like studying."[34]She also criticizes the Pakistani military's operationsmany times.

It seems that it is only when dozens of schools have been destroyed and hundreds others closed down that thearmy thinks about protecting them. Had they conducted their operations here properly, this situation would nothave arisen.

Helicopters of Pakistan military dropped toffees, but it did not last long. "Whenever we hear thechoppers flying we run out and wait for the toffees but it does not happen anymore", Yousafzaiwrote on 26 January. Two days later, Yousafzai traveled toIslamabadwith her parents, butdespite the havoc of the Swat Valley, she could not resist making comparisons: "It is my first

visit to the city. Its beautiful with nice bungalows and wide roads. But as compared to my Swatcity it lacks natural beauty".[34]After Islamabad, the family traveled toPeshawar, where theystayed briefly with relatives. Yousafzai writes about her five-year-old brother who was playingin the lawn. Her father asked him what he was doing, and he replied "I am making a grave". Thewar was taking a toll on both her brothers. On the road toBannutheir bus hit apothole, waking

her 10-year-old brother, who asked their mother, "Was it a bomb blast?"

    [34]

In Bannu, wherewomen customarily wearveils, Yousafzai "refused to wear one on the grounds that I found itdifficult to walk with it on".[34]

By February 2009, Yousafzai was back in Swat, but girls' schools were still closed. In solidarity, private schools for boys had decided not to open until 9 February, and notices appeared sayingso. But no such notices had been displayed outside girls' schools.[34]On 7 February, Yousafzaiand a brother returned to their hometown of Mingora, where the streets were deserted, and therewas an "eerie silence". "We went to supermarket to buy a gift for our mother but it was closed, whereas earlier it used to remain open till late. Many other shops were also closed", she writes inher blog. Their home was burgled and their television stolen.[34]

    Precarious peace

After boys' schools reopened, the Taliban lifted restrictions on girls' primary education, wherethere wasco-education. Girls-only schools were still closed. Yousafzai wrote that only 70 pupilsout of 700 pupils who were enrolled attended.[34]On 9 February, Yousafzai'smaidmentionedthat the situation in Swat had become very precarious and that her husband told her to go back

toAttock. Yousafzai went on to write about it thoughtfully in her blog.

People do not leave their homeland on their own free willonly poverty or a lover usually makes you leave sorapidly.

s some of her daily routines began to return to normal, Yousafzai wrote more about her homelife, in which one can gain insight into her personality. On 12 February, she mentioned that herteacher for religious education came in the afternoon. In the evening she played with her brothers"amid fighting and arguments", and she also played computer games.[34]It is known that sheowned a laptop.[27]Yousafzai mentioned that before the Taliban imposed restrictions on the cablenetwork, she used to watch theStar Plustelevision channel and her favorite drama wasRaja KeeAye Gee Barat, which she translated as "My dream boy will come to marry me".[34]

On 15 February, gunshots could be heard in the streets of Mingora, but Yousafzai's father,Ziauddin, reassured her, saying "dont be scared this is firing for peace". Her father had read inthe newspaper that the government and the militants were going to sign a peace deal the nextday. Later that night, when the Taliban announced the peace deal on theirFM Radiostudio, another round of stronger firing started outside. "People believe more in what the militants sayrather than the government," Yousafzai wrote in her blog. When they heard the announcement,Yousafzai's mother and father started crying, and her two younger brothers had tears in theireyes.[34]

Only three days later, their hopes were tested. A Pakistani reporter,Musa Khankhel, had beenkilled after covering a peace rally led bySufi Muhammad, father-in-law oflocal Talibanleader

Maulana Fazlulla.[35]That same day, 18 February 2009, Yousafzai apparently gave an interviewwithCapital Talk, a well-known Pakistani news program.[36][37]She would return to the sameprogram six months later.

On 21 February, Yousafzai got what she had been hoping for. Fazlulla announced on his FM

radio station that he was lifting the ban on women's education, and girls would be allowed toattend school until exams were held on 17 March, but they had to wearburqas.[34]

    Girls' schools reopen

On 25 February, Yousafzai wrote on her blog that she and her classmates "played a lot in classand enjoyed ourselves like we used to before".[34]Helicopters aren't appearing as frequently nordiscussions about the army and Taliban. But there is still gossip in town about a woman who felldown wearing a traditional burqa, and when a man tried to help her she refused, saying Dont

help me brother, as this will bring immense pleasure to Maulana Fazlullah.[34]

On 1 March, attendance at Yousafzai's class was up to 19 of 27 pupils, but the Taliban were stillactive in the area. Shelling continued and relief goods meant for displaced people were looted.[34]Only two days later it appeared that the peace deal was breaking down. Yousafzai wrote thatthere was a skirmish between the military and Taliban, and the sounds of mortar shells could beheard. "People are again scared that the peace may not last for long. Some people are saying thatthe peace agreement is not permanent, it is just a break in fighting," she writes. Her youngerbrother is scared to go to school because he fears he might be kidnapped.[34]

O God bring peace to Swat and if not then bring either the US or China here.

On 9 March, Yousafzai wrote about a science paper that she performed well on, and added that

the Taliban were no longer searching vehicles as they once did. Her blog ends three days later on12 March 2009.[38]The following month, in April, PresidentAsif Ali Zardarisigned acontroversial regulationinto law that formally established a stricter interpretation ofsharialaw inthe Swat region.[39]The act is supported bySufi Muhammad, the founder ofTehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi, a Taliban group operating in the area, who says that now "women willnot be allowed either to go to jobs or markets".[39]It is unclear how Yousafzai was affected bythis outcome. Later that month, government and Taliban forces began to clash once again, and inMay the government launched military operations throughout the district.

After the BBC diary ended, Yousafzai and her father were approached byNew York TimesreporterAdam B. Ellickabout filming a documentary,[30]which is where many details of thistime are captured. In May, thePakistani Armymoved into the region to regain control during theSecond Battle of Swat. Mingora was evacuated and Yousafzais family was displaced andseparated. Her father Ziauddin went toPeshawarto protest and lobby for support, while she wassent into the countryside to live with relatives. That month, after criticizing militants at a press conference, Yousafzai's father, Ziauddin, received a death threat over the radio by a Taliban commander. Obsessed by his mission torestore the Swat Valley, her father also happened to forget Yousafzai's birthday,[4]and withtypical boldness, she ridiculed him in a text message and forced him to apologize, and to buyeveryone a round of ice cream.[27]But Yousafzai was deeply inspired in her activism by her

father. That summer, for the first time, she committed to becoming a politician and not a doctor,as she had once aspired to be.[4]

I have a new dream I must be a politician to save this country. There are so many crises in our country. I

    want to remove these crises.

By early July, refugee camps were filled to capacity, and Taliban commanders were still alive. The prime minister made a long-awaited announcement saying that it was safe to return to theSwat Valley. The Pakistani military had pushed the Taliban out of the cities and into thecountryside. After three months of separation, Yousafzai's family reunited, and on 24 July 2009they headed home. They made one stop firstto meet with a group of othergrassrootsactiviststhat had been invited to see United StatesPresident Obamas special representative toAfghanistanandPakistan,Richard Holbrooke. Yousafzai pleaded with Holbrooke to intervene inthe situation, saying "Respected ambassador, if you can help us in our education, so please helpus". When her family finally did return home, they found it had not been damaged, and herschool had sustained only light damage.[4]

    Political career and activism

Following the documentary, Yousafzai was interviewed on the nationalPashto-language stationAVT Khyber, the UrduAaj Daily, and CanadasToronto Star.[30]On 19 August, she returned toCapital Talk, where she reiterated her desire to become a politician, namingBenazir Bhuttoas an

inspiration. She reportedly criticized President Zardari on television, saying "At times I think ifZardaris daughter were studying in Swat the schools would have never shut down.[36][40]

Her BBC blogging identity was being revealed in articles as early as December 2009.[14][41]Shealso began appearing on television to publicly advocate for female education.[5]But Yousafzai'srecognition seems to have been taking off not only because of her own actions, but also becauseof her father, who had become known as one of the few people to stand up against the Taliban. Those were the most terrible days the darkest in our history, her father said. We spared noefforts to speak up against terrorism and that struggle brought us into the limelight". As forYousafzai, her father says she got influenced by what was going on and gradually she joined me

    in our struggle against extremism.[30]

My purpose is to serve humanity.

Chair of District Child Assembly Swat

In late 2009, Yousafzai's political career appears to have started. A video dated 22 December2009 shows Yousafzai entering an assembly room full of children who rise and begin clapping asthey see her. She takes her chair at a table onstage where, behind her, a large banner reads

District Child Assembly Swat.[43]AUNICEFvideo from the following year explains. Theassembly was established by theKhpal Kor Foundationin 2009[1]with the support of UNICEF,to provide "a unique opportunity for young people to voice their concerns about child right'sissues, and to present solutions to address these concerns." The video goes on to highlightYousafzai, the chair of the assembly, and her opinion of the discussion. "It was a good

experience for the girls that they can share their views in front of the stakeholders, thenon-governmentaland governmental organizations", she says.[15]She appears to have held theposition through at least November 2011.[44]

    Continued activism

In December 2009 at the latest,[14]Yousafzai began participating in theInstitute for War andPeace Reporting's"Open Minds" project, which brought journalism training and discussions ofcurrent affairs to 42 schools in Pakistan. The program also edited their work and put them intouch with local newspapers. Yousafzai's own success had inspired other young people, andmany of those approaching the program were girls.[30]

Yousafzai had hoped to organize theMalala Education Foundation, which would help poor girlsgo to school.[9]A video from April 2012 refers to the foundation.[8]

    Rise to fame

In October 2011,[16]Desmond Tutuannounced Yousafzai's nomination for theInternationalChildren's Peace Prizeand she became a celebrity in Pakistan. Her public profile rose evenfurther when she was awarded Pakistan's firstNational Youth Peace Prizetwo months later inDecember.[29]

As Yousafzai became more recognized, the dangers facing her became more acute. The Talibanhas been known toattack civilians who speak out against the group. Death threats werepublished in newspapers and slipped under her door.[45]OnFacebook, where she was an activeuser, she began to receive threats and fake profiles were created under her name. Yousafzaideleted her personal page and attended digital-security sessions, but vowed to never stopworking for education for girls".[29]

When none of this worked, a Taliban spokesman says they were "forced" to act. In a meetingheld in the summer of 2012, Taliban leaders unanimously agreed to kill her.[45]

I think of it often and imagine the scene clearly. Even if they come to kill me, I will tell them what they aretrying to do is wrong, that education is our basic right.

    Assassination attempt

On 9 October 2012, aTalibangunman shot Yousafzai as she rode home on a bus after taking anexam in Pakistans Swat Valley. The masked gunman shouted "Which one of you is Malala?Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all",[25]and, on her being identified, shot at her.
