Archaic Indians-10,000 years ago
-Found new ways to use PA’s rich land and resources
-Hunted animals and gathered plants, nuts, and berries for food.
-They also began growing sunflowers for seeds (food) and gourds for containers.
Archaic Indians
-Spent less time moving around because they could grow these crops.
-Used spears, hammers, and fishhooks made from bone, shell, stone, and wood.
-Used stones to cook!!!
Archaic Indians
-Created a tool called an atlatl which allowed them to throw their spears farther and faster (Kind of like a lacrosse stick!) This is an example of an artifact, which is an object made by human hands.

Woodland Indians- 3,000 years ago
-Most advanced of them all
-About 3,000 years ago, the Woodland Indian groups lived in PA.
-Hunted animals and gathered some wild plants for food.
-They really grew their own food. They discovered foods that had not been grown before such as corn and squash.
Woodland Indians
-Because they could grow their food, they settled for long periods of time in order to grow and harvest crops.

REMEMBER
• It is not that these Indians “died out” and a new tribe was formed. As the Indians advanced, that is how they went from being Paleo to Archaic to Woodland.
• It’s just like you…when you are a third grader and advance to fourth grade, YOU are still the same person, but people are not going to call you a third grader anymore, you are now a fourth grader because you have learned more and have become more advanced.
