Paisley IB students are in the right place, doing the rightthing, at the right time, with the right people.

THE PRINCIPAL'S PENWrapping up the school year is a time for celebrating accomplishments and reflecting upon all that hasbeen achieved. Wrapping up the school year also means preparing for EOGs, EOCs, and other end-of-the-year tests. We are given the last 10 days of the school year for testing – as are all public schoolsacross the state. During this period of time all students must be tested in all required grade levels andsubject areas. These tests are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their mastery of conceptsessential for their specific courses.

At Paisley IB our teachers make sure students have a thorough understanding of the concepts theyneed to understand and use. Our teachers provide meaningful activities through IB unit lesson plansand use collaborative assessments to measure progress and to provide re-teaching where needed.Note that I say “where” needed and not “when” needed! All of us need help now and then – beyond the“first time around” – to help us get what we need in a particular class.

Here at the end of the year there is sometimes a feeling of “Uh oh, do I know everything I need toknow?” “Will I do well on my exams?” All year long students have been learning and learning andlearning – in the classroom, during before school and after school tutoring (and sometimes during lunchtutoring). Teachers have provided opportunities for learning in cooperative settings, as a whole class, and one-on-one. Students have been able to discover and dive deeply into content through essays andhands-on projects. All of this requires active engagement of the part of the learner and requires aserious commitment to excellence. PAISLEY STUDENTS ARE READY!!!

How can parents help? Well, probably you have heard since your child was in kindergarten theimportance – especially during testing – of a consistent schedule, a good night’s rest, a stress- freehome environment, and proper nutrition. Gosh, don’t we all need that! As parents, we need to be verydeliberate about this particular time of year and try extra hard to provide the kind of backdrop at homewhere students are optimally prepared for showing what they know on their exams. Have aconversation with your child about what you can do to help!

How comfortable your child is as he or she goes into end-of-the-year testing depends in large part onthe effectiveness of the teacher-student partnership. A “partnership” is exactly what it is. Teachers andstudents partner in the day-to-day learning experiences that culminate in “test day.” Teachers will bereviewing over the next couple of weeks and they will be using teacher prepared study guides to helpremind students of all they have experienced in their classes since August.

Encourage your child to ask questions and to reflect on what they have learned. One particularstrategy that was shared with me (and was evidently VERY effective according to this parent) waswhen students created (on their own initiative) their OWN study guide. Not only is this a great idea forgetting ready for end-of-the-year exams, it also is a great study technique for college!

As we close the 2015-16 school year and as we make one final push in our academics, encourage yourchild (as always) to do her or his very best! Let your children know how much you support them andhow appreciative you are of all of their hard work. For me, I appreciate all that YOU do as parents tosupport our teachers, students, and staff at Paisley IB. I am looking forward already to 2016-17 –another year of promise and also the culmination of our county’s bond referendum campaign forimproving schools - including a brand new Paisley IB Magnet School!

YEAR IN REVIEW: WHAT IN THE WORLD HAVE PAISLEY STUDENTSBEEN UP TO?

YEAR ONE: HEROESIn the 2015-16 academic year, a highlight for the Year I Heroes team was the achievement by HectorGuzman who became a Year I science fair winner. Heroes’ activities in and out of Paisley includedfield trips as well as their contributions and participation in club activities with such groups as YouthTobacco Prevention and Middle School Council. Students enjoyed field trips to Raven Knob toexperience team-building activities and also watched the play and read the book, The Outsiders. Morerecently, Heroes Year I students raised the most money in Year I. The Penny Wars Campaign, an ideafrom the Student Council, raised several hundred dollars donated to local charity, according to Ms.Katie Welborn, one of the project leaders.

YEAR ONE: MCDONALD AND MILLERThe 2015-16 academic year for Mr. Sean McDonald’s Year I team featured several field trips includingan excursion to Camp Raven Knob and a trip to the movies to view The Outsiders. Field trips such asthese provide even more experience regarding the lessons taught and application into the real world, explained Mr. McDonald. “Overall, it has been a good year for our team,” says Mr. McDonald.“Unfortunately, we’ve had several students transfer, but however we received several new studentswho have joined us and done well.” McDonald went on to explain, “With a two-teacher team, it is easierto develop relationships with our students that truly foster their education. We have fewer kids, butlonger class periods in which to give the students one-on-one instruction,” he explained. The Year Iteam provides two periods instead of one with a class that allows the teachers to cover information andreview lessons.

YEAR ONE: BRENDLEThe 2015-2016 school year was a year of fun and learning, said Year I team leader Ms. KimberlyBrendle. “The students had the opportunity to create a song or poem about three early civilizations forAmerica. They compared their similarities and differences, which furthered their knowledge on thesubject,” she said. In Language Arts, students read the book The Outsiders. They also took thatknowledge from the book and connected it to social hierarchies, which is what was being learned intheir Individuals and Societies class.

Students also went on a field trip to Raven Knob in September as an icebreaker. They got to work ontheir team building skills, meet their new peers, and make new friends. After completing the book TheOutsiders, the students got to go to see the play as well, which put their learning in a visual perspective. This is also the first year that all the teachers have come together to create interactive notebooks astextbooks for the students. These notebooks keep students organized and provide an authenticlearning experience. Parents have been giving positive feedback on these resources, and wish that allgrades would use them. Overall, this year has been a success. Students have gained new knowledgein a way that they never have before. They’ve just started on their journey through IB, and they’re readyfor Year II.

YEAR TWO: VOYAGERSThe Year II team in the Pod, the Voyagers, experienced an exciting year highlighted by district ScienceFair winner, Lucas Jorgenson, who represented Paisley at the regional competition, according to Ms.

Tanya Ford, team leader. The Voyagers also placed about fifty students as participants in Wake ForestUniversity’s Project Launch program in which university students travel to Paisley to assist Panthers toacademic success. During Black History Month, they "saw a wonderful presentation on HarriettTubman in the school auditorium," Ford continued.

In addition to the scholarly opportunities, Voyagers also participated in field trips throughout theacademic year. In the fall, the Year II team traveled to the Renaissance Festival near Charlotte. Theyalso experienced the Greensboro Science Center, where they got to see North Carolina’s only inlandaquarium. Charity events were also featured through school-wide fundraisers. During the Food Drive, they collected eight-hundred six pounds of food to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank. Mrs. Ford'shomebase also won the Penny Wars, beating all other Panther homebases with 6,420 pennies. Toconclude the 2015-16 academic year, the students elected to enjoy a pizza party rather than thetraditional picnic.

YEAR III: MOUNTAINEERSThe Mountaineers, one of two Year III teams, enjoyed a strong 2015-16 school year, said Ms. BrookeLong, team leader. “The highlight was the arrival of Ms. Bailey Allman as the new Language andLiterature teacher,” Long continued.

The unique situation concerning Ms. Allman according to Mr. Lee Matthews (Individuals and Society), isthat she is a Paisley alumna who also attended Parkland for her Diploma. “Ms. Allman,” Matthews said,“made an excellent addition to the team and has helped the students grow tremendously. She knows IBinside and out.” He looks forward to continuing to teach with her in the following school years. The Mountaineers enjoyed multiple field trips, but the students favorite was Sound to Sea in whichstudents participated in a variety of learning activities including the dissection of squids, nature walks, sand castle building, as well as team building exercises, per Ms. Long.

YEAR III: PIRATESYear III students at Paisley experienced an exciting 2015-16 academic year according to Mr. RussellLini, Year III Individuals and Society teacher. “Students created some of the closest friendships andbonds I have ever seen,” he shared. “Highlights,” Lini said, “included two field trips: one to Sound toSea, a marine based educational program and another to the local Old Salem where local historycomes to life,” he said. Mr. Lini explained that the three-night trip to Sound to Sea really brought thePaisley Panthers closer together than ever and provided a rich learning experience that, “they will mostlikely never forget.”

The trip to Old Salem provided a window into Winston-Salem’s past that was both fun and educational.Lini’s Year III team, including Mr. Cameron Britt, Language and Literature, Mr. Chris Sheils, Math, andMr. Jacob Scott, Science, all feel that this group of eighth graders has improved the most over a oneyear span than ever before.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIRThe 2016 Paisley book fair was, “Absolutely amazing the best in years,” says Ruth Wilcox, MediaCenter coordinator.
