‘Murderer’comes toIntimate
IN KEEPING with theirtradition of performingplays by establishedplaywrights, TheMechanicals theatrecollective will stageBritish playwrightAnthony Shaffer’s Mur-
derer at the IntimateTheatre from August 22to September 8.
Due to the involve-ment of many Mechan-icals members in otherprojects, their custom-ary repertory seasonfalls away this year.
Directed anddesigned by ChrisWeare, Murderer tellsthe story of NormanBartholomew, a painterobsessed with famousmurderers. It wittilyexplores the games people play, focusing onthe often unappreciatedrelationship betweenmurderer and victim.
Carel Nel, winner ofthe 2012 Fleur du CapBest Actor Award forhis role in Die Rebellie
van Lafras Verwey, isset to impress yet againin the role ofBartholomew. He willbe joined by his Lafras
Verwey co-star NandiHorak, (Binneland, Lie
of the Mind) as MillieSykes, Emily Child(Decadence, King Lear)
as Elizabeth Bartholo-mew and DorianBurstein (Pictures of

SPRING QUEEN –– The Staging ofthe Glittering Proletariat. Presentedby The Centre for Curating the Archive.Curated by Dale Washkansky. At Iziko’sBertram House until August 24. LUCINDA JOLLY reviews
TWO WOMEN go into a clothing chainstore, both to buy clothing. Their experi-ences in this instance will be vastlydifferent.
For the one woman it will be simplythe act of buying mass-produced cloth-ing, clothing, that until worn by her, willremain impersonal.
For the other woman it will become ahighly personal experience when sherecognises with surprise, maybe evenpleasure, that it was she who was respon-sible for stitching every single rightsleeve on to the range of blouses that willbe worn by hundreds of women. Thatshe may not be able to afford the verypiece she made is another story.
The work of the second woman isalways invisible. There is no evidence orsignature to indicate that it was herhands who made the right sleeve .
It’s against this crushing anonymitythat the Spring Queen pageant takes onits vital importance to both the womenwho populate the factory floors and thecommunities where they originate.
Hosted by the Southern African
Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union(SACTWU), the pageant started in thepolitically fraught 1970s, when young“non-white” workers were joining thefactories and were keen to enter thepageant.
The pageant presented a chance tomove from the stifling uniformity of thefactory floor and for a short periodinhabit the rarefied atmosphere of theprincess where the invisible is madedazzingly visible. It also provided achance to unite and have fun aftergruelling wage negotiations.
One of the largest of its kind in theworld, the pageant begins as an in-housefactory pageant from which 40 to 60 dif-ferent queens are chosen to representtheir factories and compete with eachother in the Spring Queen competition. There can only be one SACTWU Queenand one first and one second princess, aMiss Personality and a Miss BestDressed.
The exhibition Spring Queen pro-vides a platform to unpack the pageant, which many are unaware of. It is theinspiration of Dr Siona O’Connell, whohas a PhD on District Six and the issueof land claims. She is also curator at theCentre for Curating the Archive at UCT.
The ethos of the exhibition is a con-tinuation of O’Connell’s concern withwhat Professor Anthony Bogues, the
Harmon Family Professor of AfricanaStudies, terms the “archive of the ordi-nary”. The success of the exhibition isprecisely what happens, in O’Connell’swords, “when the seemingly banal andmundane become extraordinary whenpinpointed and focused upon”.
The exhibition contextualises thepageant into “the larger historical nar-rative of South Africa”. Rather than sim-ply providing answers to questions, italso raises questions around the objecti-fication of the woman participants, forexample, and whether the goal of the
pageant is one of an illusory moment orsomething more sustainable.
The exhibition is a busy constructionof photographs, moving testimonies bythe various beauty queens – Bianca Jo-Ann Adams, Farieda Ebrahim, MareldiaApril, Mariam Bird, Melissa Hendriksand Paegan Abrahams – and dressesworn by them, in particular the hand-painted white silk dress worn by Adams.
The panels of the women’s testi-monies are less about winning the titleand more about personal growth –comments such as the pageant offers
“workers something to be proud of” or “Iwas a very shy person… it allowed me tostep out of my shell” and “it broughtsome excitement into my normal day-to-day routine”.
Perhaps we who wear the clothescould now take some time to celebrateone of the highpoints in the lives ofthose who made them.
