1.1OBjECTIVEOFThEPACKAGInGhAnDBOOK

ThispackaginghandbookprovidessupplierswithinformationonthepackagingspecificationsofKnorr-Bremse.Usingthesespecificationsasaframeworkforthedevelopmentofanoptimisedpackagingsystem,theobjectiveistoguaranteeasmoothflowofmaterialsbetweenthesupplierandKnorr-Bremse,whichincorpo-ratesallqualitative,ecologicalandfinancialconsiderations.

Furthermore,thepurposeofthepackaginghandbookistoserveasaguideinthepurchasingprocessatKnorr-Bremse.ThisallowsKnorr-Bremsetoadvisetheirsuppliersandprovidesupportintheselectionandapplicationofoptimumdelive-rypackaging,and,asfarasisfinanciallyjustifiable,tominimiseanypotentiallyharmfulenvironmentaleffects.

The target is the continuous shaping of the logistical chain, together with the cooperative exploitation of the streamlining potential this brings.

ESDS(Electrostaticdischargesensitive)DEVICEComponentsanddevicesareregardedaselectrostaticallysensitiveiftheyarelikelytobedamagedordestroyedbyelectrostaticfields,uncontrolledelectricalcharges,spikesinoperatingvoltage,orothersimilarphenomena.

Thesupplierisobligatedtoacceptresponsibilityforensuringthat

alldeliveredpartsarecorrectlyandadequatelypreserved,pro-

tectedandpackagedinorderthattheysafelyreachtheirde-

stinationataKnorr-Bremselocation.

Thesuppliermustobservethepackaginghandbookspecifica-

tions,whilealsotakingintoaccounttheexistenceofpotential

nationalorinternationalspecifications.

Knorr-Bremsedemandstheapplicationofrecyclablematerialsforbothone-wayandreusablepackaging/loadcarriers;reusablepackagingandloadcarriersarethepreferredoption.

Forthisreason,itisthewastemanagementgoalofbothKnorr-Bremseanditssupplierstoadheretoenvironmentallegislationaccordingtotheecologicalprinciplepreventionbeforereductionbeforerecycling.Employingthispolicywillresultinaconsistentcontributiontothereductionofwaste.

➔PackagingreductionAllreusableandone-waypackagingmustbedefinedaccordingtoitsecologi-calandeconomicalimpact,andonlyessentialpackagingshouldbeused.

2.1PROVISIOnOFPACKAGInG

BasedontherequirementsoftheKnorr-Bremsepackaginghandbook,theprovisionofpackagingiseffectedbythesupplier.Itisthereforethesupplier‘sobligationtoacceptresponsibilityfortheappropriateimplementationofthespecificationsstipulatedbythepackaginghandbook.

However,Knorr-Bremseiswithinitsrightstoindependentlyspecifytothesupplierthemandatoryuseofrequiredpackaging,e.g.inthecaseofanyfragilepartswithparticularprotectionrequirements,atanytime.

Irrespectiveofsuchcircumstances,theresponsibilityforthedefect-freedeliveryofpartstotheKnorr-Bremsedeliverypointremainswiththesupplier.

Intheeventthatthespecifiedpackagingisnotadheredto,orthepackaginghandbookspecificationsignored,Knorr-Bremsereservestherighttochargethesupplieranadministrationfeeforanyadditionalcostsarisingfromhandling,repackagingorwastedisposal.Thesupplierisdeemedliableforanydamagetoqualityresultingfromtheinadequateorstainedpackagingofparts.Underjustifiablecircumstances,irregularities(e.g.alternativepackagingonproductionrunstart-up)mustbepunctuallyagreeduponwiththerespectiveKnorr-Bremselocation,andtheappropriatecomment(“AlternativePackaging”)includedonthedeliveryreceipt.

PackagingspecifiedorapprovedbyKnorr-Bremseintheproductionprocessmaybechangedatanypointfollowingfirstreceiptofdelivery.

Thefollowingprocedureisthereforepossibleintheprovisionofpackaging:

➔packaging handbookSupplierselectsappropriatepackagingbasedontherequirementsofthepackagingmanual.

➔knorr-bremse specificationMandatorypackagingtobeusedisspecifiedbyKnorr-Bremse.

The principle of packaging selection is to comply with the properties of the individual parts, the protection requirements, the transport format and the supplier conditions.

2.2SAFETyAnDThEEnVIROnmEnT

OndeliveryofallmaterialsfromsupplierstoKnorr-Bremse,itisaminimumrequirementthattherespectivelyvalidlegalprovisionsgoverningpackaging,transport,storageandcomponentsbefulfilled.Inaddition,theapplicationoftheenvironmental,electricandelectromagneticprovisionsexistinginthecountriesofproductionandoperationiscompulsory.

2.2.1hAzARDOUSmATERIALSHazardousmaterialsaresubstancesthatposeanactualdangertohumans,animals,theenvironmentorpublicsafetyandorderwhenbeingtransportedthroughthepublicdomain.

Ondeliveryofhazardousmaterials,itisessentialthatalllocalprovisionsconcer-ningthemarkingandtransportationofhazardousmaterialsareobserved.Knorr-Bremsemustbesuppliedwithsafetydatasheetsconcerningthispriortodelivery.

2.2.2PERmITTEDAnDPROhIBITEDPACKAGInGmATERIALS

Inordertokeepthelogisticalcostsoftheseparationandcollectionofmaterialtypestoaminimum,andtoachieveanoptimumrecyclingprocedure,onlycertainpre-definedrecyclablematerialsarepermittedforuse.

Allone-waypackagingisproducedusingenvironmentallyfriendlymaterialsthataregloballyrecognisedasrecyclablesubstances.Theuseofcompoundsandloosefillermaterials,suchaspackagingchips,istobekepttoaminimum.

Thefundamentalobjectiveistheuseofreusablepackaging.Table2.1offersanoverviewofthepermittedpackagingmaterialsatKnorr-Bremse.

Inextenuating,exceptionalcircumstances,asuppliermaybepermittedtousebitumen,wax,paraffinandoilpaper,aswellasstyrofoam.WrittenapprovalfromKnorr-Bremseisrequiredinadvance.

Thepackagingmaterialmustnotaffectthecleanconditionofparts.

2.2.3REqUIREmEnTSFORWOODAnDWOOD-BASEDmATERIALSItisessentialthatpackagingmaterialsmadefromsolidwoodarehandledandlabelledaccordingtotheIPPC(InternationalPlantProtectionConvention).

Thepermittedweightlimitforpackagesandloadcarriersmayonlybeexceedediftechnicalconditionsrenderadherencetothepermittedweightlimitimpossible.

Thetotalweightmustbeclearlyandvisiblymarkedonthepackageorloadcarrier.

2.3.1LIFTInGPACKAGESByhAnD

InordertoensureaminimumriskofinjurytotheemployeesofKnorr-Bremseanditssuppliers,the(gross)permittedweightlimitforapackageofupto20kgmustnotbeexceeded.

Anypackagesweighingover20kgmustalwaysbedeliveredonloadcarriersdesignedspecificallyforthispurpose.

2.3.2LOADCARRIERSThepermittedweightlimitforloadcarriersis1000kg.ThismayonlybeexceededifwrittenapprovalfromKnorr-Bremsehasbeenreceived.

2.4POSITIOnInGOFPACKAGEDGOODS

AnDPACKAGES

Thepackagedgoodshouldbearrangedwithinthepackaging/packagingcomponentstoallowanevenweightdistribution.Thesizeofthepackagingshouldreflectthesizeofthepackagedgood.Toensurethatthepackagedgooddoesnotslipoutofpositionduringtransportandhandling,allemptyspacesinthepackagingcomponentsshouldbefilled.

Thepackageshouldbepositionedontheloadcarriertoallowanevenweightdistribution.Thebasicsizeoftheloadcarriermustnotbeexceededbythepackage.

Ifthepackagesdonotcompletelycovertheloadcarrier,theyshouldbearrangedtoallowanevenweightdistributionandtopreventthemfromslippingoutofposition.

Oneofthemostimportantpropertiesofaunitloadisitsstackability.Thismustguaranteethatpalletsetc.canbesecurelypiledontopofeachother(stacked)withorwithoutanystackingsupport.

2.6GEnERALAnTI-CORROSIOnPROTECTIOn

Corrosionistheprocessofdamageordeteriorationofmaterialsthroughchemicalorelectrochemicalreactionstakingplacewithothersurroundingmaterials.Thecorrosiveagentsinvolved–substanceswithintheimmediateproximityoftheparts,e.g.dirt,gases,saltsordust–impactonthematerialandcausecorrosion.

Allpartssusceptibletocorrosion,aswellasallworkedandsmoothedsurfaces(particularlyworkedcastingsandforgings),requirespecificprotectionandprotectivestepsmustthereforebetakentopreventcorrosion.

Preventativeprotectivemeasuresconsistofmaterialanti-corrosionprotectionandprotectionagainstcorrosionthroughadequatepackaging.

Theformat,natureandtimingofanti-corrosionprotectiondependsonthe:

➔requiredprotectionaccordingtoKnorr-Bremsespecificationsanddrawings,

➔susceptibilityoftechnicalsurfacestocorrosionandotherharmfulfactors(dust,stainsetc.),

➔transportconditions,durationoftransport,

➔storageconditionsanddurationofstorage,

➔subsequenttreatment,

➔subsequentusage.

mATERIALAnTI-CORROSIOnPROTECTIOnProvidedthatnootheragreementhasbeenreached,thesuppliermustimple-menttheanti-corrosionmeasuresrequiredbyKnorr-Bremse,accordingtothevalidspecification/drawings.Partsdeliveredwithouttheagreedanti-corrosionprotectionareconsideredasunsatisfactoryandwillbereportedtothesupplier

OnlypreservationagentspermittedbyKnorr-Bremse(Knorr-BremseIn-HouseStandardN12005)maybeused.

antI-cOrrOsIOn FIlm / vcI FIlmAnti-corrosionfilmcontainschemicalsubstances(VCI)whichgraduallyevaporate.Theyformaprotectivelayeroverthesurfaceofthepackagedpartswhichdisplacesoxygen.Itisusuallysufficientforthepartstobeenvelopedbytheprotectivefilm;however,thegapbetweenanti-corrosionfilmandpartmustnotexceed30cm.

Althoughairtightpackagingisnotnecessary,theVCIfilmmustbewithinanenclosedpackageinordertoensurethattheanti-corrosionprotectiontakeseffect.Theanti-corrosionfilmmustbeadjustedtomatchtherespectivepartsand/ortheircomposition.Inthecaseofcomponentsofvariedcomposition,itispossiblethatonlysomeofthepartswillbeprotectedagainstcorrosion.Undersuchcircumstances,itisadvisablethatadryingagentbeusedtoachievethebestprotection.

dryIng agentDryingagentscanbeusedtoavoidincidencesofcorrosionandmoisturedama-ge,aswellasmouldinfestations,duringseaandair-freighting.Dryingagentsaremanagedindryingagentunits;theabsorptiondegreeofadryingagentisgovernedbythequantityoftheseunits.

Asufficientquantityofdryingagentbagsmustbearrangedforthepackagedgoods.Forthispurpose,attentionmustbepaidbothtothecorrectpositioningofthebagsandtoensuringthatthepackagingistightlysealed.Thedryingagentmustnotcomeintodirectcontactwiththeparts,asthemoistureinthedryingagentcancausecorrosion.

Prior to delivery to Knorr-Bremse, it must be ensured that all parts susceptible to corrosion are correctly preserved, wrapped or sealed, and packaged.

2.7PACKAGInGREqUIREmEnTSFORGLASSPAnES

Withregardtothepackagingofglasspanes,thefollowingrequirementsneedtobesatisfiedunlessotherspecificationsarestatedinthepurchaseorder:

➔Usageoftransportframesorwoodenboxes(screwed,tobeopenedonthefront)

➔Usageofasoftunderground(e.g.rubber,felt,carton,plastic,etc.)

2.8PACKAGInGREqUIREmEnTSFORELECTROnICS

Electrostaticdischargecanshortenthelifespanofelectroniccomponentswithoutthisbeingapparent,anddestroyparticularlysensitivecomponentscompletely.Choosingthecorrecttypeofpackagingforthesecomponentscanhelpminimizetheriskofelectrostaticdischarges;conversely,inappropriatepackagingcanmakesuchfaultsmuchmorelikelytooccur.Forexample,certainplasticpackagingmaterials(e.g.packagingchips,bubblewrap,stretchfilm,etc)areparticularlygoodelectricalchargecarriersandarethereforeliabletocausestrongdischarges.Thesetypesofpackagingshouldbeavoidedinfavorofpackagingthatismadeofantistaticorstatic-dissipativematerials(e.g.coatedcorrugatedcardboard)whichpreventdangerousdischargesandsoguaranteethesafetransportandstorageofelectroniccomponents.

Theguidelinesandmeasuresoutlinedbelowareintendedtohelpavoidhandlingerrorswhenpackagingandtransportingelectrostaticdischargesensitivedevices(ESDSdevices).

2.8.1ESDPROTECTIOnPreventivemeasurestoavoidelectrostaticdischargesarerequiredwheneverESDSdevicesarebeinghandledorassembled.Mostactiveelectroniccomponen-tsandintegratedcircuitsareatriskifimproperlyhandled,transported,assembled(e.g.whensolderingincircuitboards),ortouched.

Electrostaticdischargescanbepreventedorsafelydissipatedforadevicebyensuringpotentialequalization(e.g.thegroundingofindividuals).Thisrequiresthefollowingminimumpreventivemeasurestobetaken:

➔Packagingmadeofantistaticorstatic-dissipativematerials

➔Conductiveworkplaces(e.g.chairs,flooring,tablemats,people,etc.)

➔Groundingtape

➔Toolswithstatic-dissipativehandles

➔Shockandvibrationprotection

➔etc.

WhentransportingESDSdevicesbysea,theincreasedriskarisingfromthehighlevelsofmoisturemustbetakenintoaccount.Suppliersshouldselectapackagingtypethatwillprotectthecomponentsagainstmoisture.

2.8.2ShIPPInGOFELECTROSTATICDISChARGESEnSITIVEDEVICESAllpackagingmaterialsshouldbemadeexclusivelyofconductivematerials,andinspecialcasesofmaterialsthatpreventthebuildupofstaticelectricity.Packagingmustbecompletelysealed,i.e.thecomponentsmustbeprotectedfromdirectcontact.Devicesmustnotbecomestaticallychargedinsidethepackagingandmustbeenclosedonallsidesbyaconductivematerialwhichactsasanelectricalshieldsimilarinprincipletoafaradaycage.

Non-conductiveplasticbags(PVC),Styrofoam,orothersimilarinsulatingmateri-alsarenotpermitted.Conductivefoamsordomesticaluminumfoilshouldalsobeavoided–repeateduseofthesetypesofproductscanleaveresiduesofconductivematerialonthecomponent,whichcaninturncauseshortcircuits.

Toprotectagainstdamageduringshipping,devicesshouldbesecuredonlyusingpaddingmaterialsthatpreventthebuildupofstaticcharge(e.g.cardboardwithaconductiveexternalcoating).

ThestandardpackagingtypespermissiblewhenshippingESDSdevicestoKnorr-Bremsearedescribedinchapter4.1.5.

Partsmadeofrubbermustbeprotectedagainstthenegativeeffectsofe.g.heat,light,ozone,oxygen,moisture,ormechanicalstressesandcontaminationthroughe.g.oilsandsolvents.

Inadequateprotectioncanresultindecompositionreactionssuchashardening,softening,breaking,cracking,orothertypesofsurfacedegradation.

Forthisreason,anddependingonthetypeofrubberinvolved,therearecertainbasicrequirementsthatmustbemetwhentransporting,storing,andespeciallywhenpackingthesecomponents.

InternationalstandardISO2230“Rubberproducts–Guidelinesforstorage”describesthesebasicconditionsandprovidesgeneralinstructionsonthestorage,packaging,andpreservationofrubber-basedparts.

4.5CLEAnInGAnDDISPOSALOFLOADCARRIERS/

PACKAGInGCOmPOnEnTS

TheoperationalinspectionanddisposalofpackagingcomponentsandloadcarriersnolongerfitforuseiseffectedeitherpriortoreturndeliverybyKnorr-Bremsetothesupplier,orpriortorepeatuseonthepartofthesupplier.

Therepairor,wherenecessary,thedisposalofpackagingcomponentsandloadcarriersnolongerserviceableiscarriedoutbytheproprietor.Ifownershipcannotbeeasilydetermined(e.g.inthecaseofthepoolingsystem),thepartyinpossessi-onofthepackagingcomponentsandloadcarriersisconsideredresponsiblefortheirdisposalandreplacement.

Thesupplierisresponsibleforensuringthatthepartsitdeliversarepackagedincleanpackagingcomponents.Anypotentiallyrequiredcleaning(external/internal)beforerepeatuseofthepackagingcomponentsmustbecarriedoutbythesupplieroraserviceproviderspecifiedbythesupplier.Theremovaloftagsandpartiallyremovedtagsalsofallsundertheremitofpackagingcomponentcleaning.
