2009–2010 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 5: Pacific University Annual Report 2009-2010

It has been my distinct pleasure and honor to serve as chair of the Board of Trustees this past year. This has been an exciting year of growth and progress, with many faculty, staff and student accomplishments. It has also been a year when we said sad but fond farewell to alumni Fred Scheller and Tom Holce both of whom passed away this spring. We will, of course, remember them for their financial contributions, but most of all for their creative energy and their unique Boxer Spirit, which has helped us to this high point in the University’s history.

Many, many individuals, organizations and groups are necessary to sustain a growing and vibrant university. I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you and invite you to explore the pages of this report, with an eye towards this past year of accomplishments, and the exciting years ahead.

Sincerely,

Mindy Cameron Chair, Board of Trustees

Mindy Cameron welcomes Lesley Hallick as Pacific’s 17th President.

Although it is hard to believe, this letter marks my first full year as president of Pacific. And what a wonderful year it’s been! The first comprehensive planning effort that I undertook was quickly dubbed the

“Listening Tour,” in which I met with dozens of groups of students, faculty, alumni and friends of the University. These sessions focused on two key questions I posed to each group: What is it that is so special about Pacific that it is imperative that we protect and nurture it? What are your dreams and aspirations for the future of Pacific?

On campus and off, and with alumni groups across the country, we held more than 90 question and answer sessions and countless individual meetings to listen to the answers to these questions and to develop our goals and objectives for the next decade. It was an exhilarating and inspiring experience—learning always is—but it was also fascinating to contrast the remarkable consistency of the answers to the first question with the breadth and variety of the hopes and aspirations we have for Pacific expressed in the answers to the second question.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

DISCOVERY SUSTAINABILITY GLOBAL COMMUNITYEXCELLENCEDIVERSITY

Last December I presented my initial draft of “Vision 2020—A Framework for the Next Decade,” to the Board of Trustees. This vision is based upon five framing principles.

1. Discovery is an integral and essential component of the education process

2. The highest quality programs are delivered in a manner that is sustainable economically and environmentally

3. The Pacific mission of education, discovery and service requires a rich diversity of ideas, people and cultures

4. Excellence is achieved by supporting the people who deliver and receive the University’s programs

5. Pacific’s graduates are motivated and prepared to contribute to the global community

This fall we presented to the Board of Trustees an enhanced view of how these principles play out and what next steps must be prioritized as we look to the decade ahead for Pacific. Perhaps not surprising to those of you who have supported Pacific so generously in the past, by far our most urgent priorities are the support of students through endowed scholarships and the creation of enhanced educational facilities. You will hear much more about these exciting initiatives in the near future.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to ask a question or provide input during this process. Thanks too, to all of you who gave of your time or your gifts to help us move forward this year. Your support is absolutely crucial to building a University that is ever more able to share “the Pacific experience” with a new generation of students. I invite you read on to discover a few of the things we have accomplished together this past year.

Warmest regards,

Lesley M. Hallick, Ph.D. President

It was a banner year for science at Pacific as the program received one of its most significant gifts ever from long-time supporter the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust: a three-year $325,000 grant and admission into the Trust’s College Science Research Program.

The College Science Research Program bolsters faculty and undergraduate student research efforts in the natural sciences through grants to institutions with the capacity to develop division-wide, faculty-student summer research programs that can be sustained with institutional resources and external funding.

While it’s an important financial boost, it also increases the probability of additional support for Pacific’s growing science programs. “It’s more than just the money,” says Dean of Arts & Sciences John Hayes. “It’s the recognition by an outside organization that Pacific is doing high-quality research.”

The impact is already being felt. New equipment to study DNA sequences and the properties of fluorescent compounds was purchased. The Murdock funds added eight faculty members and 15 students to the summer research program this summer, for a record total of 19 faculty members working with 40 students. Projects are intensive, mostly field experiences with students working one-to-one with faculty mentors.

“The Murdock funding provides a huge boost to Pacific in many other ways as well,” says Physics Professor James Butler, the undergraduate research program’s principle investigator.

“The research done by students in collaboration with faculty mentors will position them to be successful in their post-Pacific endeavors such as going on to top graduate programs.”

In addition, “The funding lays the foundation for faculty to be successful in producing peer-reviewed work and obtaining other grants,” says Butler. “The list of institutions who have been awarded this grant includes nearly all of the most prestigious private colleges and universities in the Pacific Northwest and represents a significant step forward.”

Banner Year for Science | Murdock Grants

The National Science Foundation awarded a $554,248 grant to the College of Arts & Sciences for a computer science summer camp for seventh and eighth grade girls. Associate Professor Shereen Khoja was one of the project leads for the four-week Girls Gather for Computer Science camp. The funds will ensure enrollment of 30 campers for three consecutive summers.

“We believe the impact of such a camp will be decisive, not just for the 90 girls who will go through the camp, but also for their parents, friends and teachers,” Khoja said.

VISION 2020

DISCOVERY

If you go for a walk near Berglund Hall on the Forest Grove campus, you can’t help but smile as peals of laughter ring out from the playground at the Early Learning Community. The center for preschoolers and kindergartners emphasizes a play-oriented learning experience for both the young students and students in the College of Education. Started two years ago with 40 young students, the Early Learning Community began this fall with a full load of 60 youngsters.

Pacific’s Interprofessional Diabetes Clinic at the Health Professions Campus opened in June, thanks to a $94,000 grant from The Regence Foundation and $10,000 from The Standard. The clinic focuses on the high incidence of diabetes in the Latino population. The first day of the clinic saw six faculty and eight student interns treating five new patients in a little over three hours. The clinic plans to see up to 1,000 patients annually, and will be open one day and one evening a week.

The College of Optometry’s Vision Performance Institute (VPI) has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Macular Degeneration Foundation to conduct a three-year longitudinal study of the impact excessive light has on the aging process of eyes.

Associate Professor of Optometry John R. Hayes said the award will allow the VPI to test hypotheses to determine whether or not the body’s generation of lipofuscin, a waste product that accumulates in the eyes over an individual’s lifetime, increases when the eyes are exposed to more light than they can fully process.

“Even if I can’t donate a huge sum of money, I donate my time and what money I’m able to

Student giving has ramped up for three years and continues to grow. Annual Giving Coordinator Meredith Brynteson ’08 notes that a total of 170 students became donors this year, including 18 percent of seniors. About 12 percent of the undergraduate student body gave. Many gave in honor of a favorite teacher or staff member who helped them along. “We want to thank all the students who gave and encourage all alumni to follow their example,” says Brynteson.

Natalie Reed hasn’t been out of college long, but she’s already a steady donor, a “give back” to the school that helped set her life course. For Reed, the road to becoming a physical therapist began in high school when she hurt her back and received physical therapy. When she entered college, she was thinking of working with athletes, a natural for the Pacific softball player, but she got increasingly interested in geriatric care. Now with an undergraduate degree in biology (1997) and graduate degree in physical therapy (2000), she works extensively with older people.

“I find this group as a whole takes much interest in their health and will often times devote the time it takes to improve their situation. I love the interaction and stories.”

Over the last ten years she’s worked with numerous elderly patients who had joint replacement surgery. Always a strong advocate for empowering patients to be more active in their own recovery and healthcare, she jumped at the chance for a new position that would allow her to have more direct involvement in patient care. She recently joined Willamette Valley Medical Center in The Joint Replacement Institute in McMinnville, Ore.

“Since this program opened in June, we have seen an immediate and huge improvement in patient outcomes and this is very rewarding for me,” Natalie says. She’s involved with care process development, still works with patients daily and teaches a weekly pre-operative class, a combination she’s really enjoying.

When Reed began her studies at Pacific, she was only 17 and had really never been away from home. She found the University nurturing and inspiring, small enough to find her place and not be overlooked, but large enough to deliver the training she sought.

“My experience at Pacific was incredibly important in making me who I am today,” she says, and was a key to staying involved and becoming a donor. “Even if I can’t donate a huge sum of money, I donate my time and what money I’m able to the school that I can only say good things about. It is simply the right thing to do.”

Sixteen professors, in disciplines ranging from art to foreign languages to mathematics, are all working on sustainability-related projects in the College of Arts & Sciences and increased focus has been placed on interdisciplinary efforts. For instance, Professor Terry O’Day (left) now holds a joint appointment in Environmental Studies and Art.

“Sustainability is increasingly a key theme for Arts & Sciences classes,” says Deke Gunderson, Professor of Environmental Studies. This fall, the seminars for first year students will incorporate outside speakers on sustainability practices, he notes.

A new garden sits just north of the Forest Grove campus’ tennis courts on University Avenue. Known as the Students for Organic Living Garden, the site is an example of how students can maintain a sustainable, effective garden that is aesthetically appealing. The garden serves the campus not only as a space for growing food, but also for study, art projects, cook-offs, social gatherings and education. The idea springs from permaculture–a form of agriculture and community building that treats people and farms as ecosystems. Plots will be rented out to members of the Pacific community.

Several faculty, staff and student groups are working together to promote sustainability at Pacific. This year, the University passed a sustainability policy and joined the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, an international group of colleges and universities that strive to be leaders in sustainability transformation. Hawai'i Student Scholarship FundThe Na Haumana 'O Hawai'i/Hawai'i Student Scholarship Fund was established by Gary Pacarro ’74 and his wife Gwen in 2003. The fund assists Hawaiian students with academic promise and financial need at the junior, senior and graduate level.

Gary and Gwen have long been involved in philanthropy, both for Punahou School, the K-12 school where they met, and at Pacific. Gary, who performed in the Lu'au as a student, is still actively involved and was the king of the 50th event.

“The Pacific experience is like no other,” says Gary. It fosters many life-long friendships, including particularly close bonds within the Hawai'i Club, which he likens to a combined fraternity/sorority. That “ohana” or family spirit lives through the Lu’au and continuing friendships with Pacific alumni on the Islands.

Brightening Futures Pacesetters scholarship recipient Tiara Herr, a Banks, Ore. high school graduate, has set her sights on becoming a pediatric oncologist. “I would like to give back to the doctors who fought so hard to save my life when I had cancer. I feel I can relate to my patients on a much more personal note because I’ve been through it myself.”

A first-generation college student, she received not only the Pacesetters award, but also a music talent scholarship from Pacific plus other local scholarships. “Without Pacific’s generosity, I wouldn’t have been able to attend the college that I truly feel is the place I belong,” Herr says.

THE POWER OF A GIFT

One of the key components of financial aid, endowed scholarships, facilitate a lasting legacy of support for students in need. Also, with a minimum gift of $25,000, endowed scholarships are designed to grow over time.

The Class of 1960 The Class of 1960 has started fundraising for a new scholarship called The Class of 1960 Endowed Memorial Scholarship. The idea, says Marge Putman Lanthier ’60, is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the class and to honor classmates who have passed away. Also, remembering their own struggles getting through school, the scholarship is aimed at assisting juniors and seniors.

“Several of our classmates said they were able to raise enough money to start university, but then had a tough time funding their final two years,” she says. “Also, if a student did well enough at Pacific to continue, we knew they were serious students and on their way to becoming graduates.”

The class is looking for pledges for three years through 2012, so the scholarship can be awarded in 2013.

VISION 2020

DIVERSITY

The Center for Languages and International Collaboration (CLIC) opened last fall during the University’s annual Around the World Celebration—an apt way to dedicate a location where global understanding and learning is emphasized. The CLIC, located in Scott Hall, includes computer stations, recording and editing resources, theaters, international broadcasts and international print materials for students, staff and faculty. Development of the center was funded through the Meyer Memorial Trust, The Collins Foundation, NorthWest Academic Computing Consortium, individual donors and the University.

Speeches, marches, dance, music and food help celebrate and honor diversity on campus each year. Martin Luther King Day brings people together for a march through downtown Forest Grove and a program on campus. Similarly, the annual Asian Day features food and music to celebrate the various Asian countries represented at Pacific.

Dan McKitrick, professor emeritus in the School of Professional Psychology, was one of two people nationwide honored by the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology for his commitment to racial diversity. McKitrick worked to include diversity instruction and awareness in all academic, clinical and research activities in the School.

Touch the Future is another Pacific program which serves under-represented populations, including Latinos, African Americans and Asian Americans. Some 100 local students grades eight to 11 participate in the College of Education’s program, which is designed to introduce students to university life and to help them explore different courses of study.

Through the Center for Languages and International Collaboration students at Pacific can engage in coursework with students in other nations around the world, in real time, via advanced video conferencing technology. A student at Pacific who has never left the state of Oregon, can form a friendship and learn with a student in Ecuador, Trinidad, China or Japan.

Fred Scheller was well known for mentoring, encouraging and

cajoling speech, radio and TV students to do their best and believe in themselves—so they too could go

out and make a difference.

Page 21: Pacific University Annual Report 2009-2010

Excellence can be defined in many ways, but

the word almost always means a cut above, a

person or thing that stands out from the crowd.

So it was for the late Fred Scheller, alumnus,

teacher, mentor, donor and all-around

supporter of all that Pacific is and could be. He

was well known for mentoring, encouraging

and cajoling speech, radio and TV students to

do their best and believe in themselves—so they

too could go out and make a difference. Many

of the hundreds he taught have done that.

For Scheller, though, excellence was more than

a kind word or a sharp observation. It was

putting in the time, a kind of voting with the

feet, that he valued. Fred traveled to Hawai’i

many times to tell students of the small school

and family-friendly atmosphere at Pacific. That

resonated because most Hawaiians come from

small towns and tight-knit families. He helped

found the famed Pacific Lu’au and attended

every one of them, except the milestone 50th

installment this year. He was too ill to attend

and died shortly after. He spent countless

hours teaching speech and honing the Pacific

Forensics team into a fearsome vocal force.

His connections in Portland resulted in Pacific

receiving high-quality radio and TV equipment,

not the usual outdated hand-me-downs. The

equipment was used to start KPUR, the student

radio station, and at the time, the only college

TV studio in the area.

Long-time Portland Trailblazers radio producer

Dave Bell echoes the experience of many a

Scheller student: “Fred was a great teacher

because he not only knew how to educate

us on the subject matter, he knew how to

make sure we got it. He knew when to put

pressure on us to absorb the material, he

knew when to ease off and go one-on-one.

Fred was a taskmaster in that he wouldn’t

allow any of us to slack off or complete less-

than-competent work. `If you’re going to do

it, do it right.´ Those words have served as

a mantra ever since I first heard them nearly

50 years ago. Even though he could be—and

usually was—tough, at the end of the day, and

certainly at the end of our college careers, he

was our best friend.”

A Cut Above | Fred Scheller

Every spring, students receiving scholarships, and their benefactors, get to meet and enjoy a lively reception at the University. Cassie Roberts, an undergraduate scholarship recipient, summed up the thoughts of many of the other students attending this year, noting the funds, “remove some of the financial burden that faces college students everywhere.” She added,

“I want to thank each and every one of you for making a difference in a student’s life.” A video of the 2010 reception is at www.pacificu.edu/offices/ur/development.

VISION 2020

EXCELLENCE

Two more Pacific graduates are Fulbright Scholars this fall, bringing to 23 the number of students who have won the prestigious award over past few years. This year’s winners are Fiona Munoz ’10 (left) and Angelica Rockquemore ’10 (right). Munoz, a sociology major also trained in performing arts, will work with rehabilitation centers in Cambodia to help sex trafficking victims. Rockquemore, a triple major in anthropology, international studies and Japanese, plans to study and conduct research on traditional Japanese Gardens at Kyoto University in Japan.

In a day filled with sunshine, parents and flowers, seniors in the College of Arts & Sciences and College of Education presented their Senior Capstone projects in April. Not without a few nervous tremors, the students presented on everything from the impact of athletics on student academic achievement to a study on how immigration has changed family meals. Students gave 218 presentations (some on more than one topic) in 16 different classrooms, followed by a late afternoon reception for families, students and staff.

Pacific’s Speech Team made its fourth consecutive trip to the International Forensics Association Tournament in Berlin, Germany and had five students advance to the final rounds, including senior Casey Nishimura, who won the team’s second international title in as many years. In addition, senior David Maile was Northwest Forensics Conference Champion, the first time in recent memory. In all, it was a

“highlight reel” season, with the squad competing in 11 tournaments. Some 93 speeches advanced to the finals, including 24 first place and 20 second place finishes.

The namesake for Pacific’s newest giving society, Charles Trombley graduated from Pacific in 1954 and began his illustrious 30-year career at Pacific.

Page 25: Pacific University Annual Report 2009-2010

Charles Trombley ’54, was one of those staff members who truly embodied the culture of caring for which Pacific is widely known. As dean of admissions and later dean of students for more than 30 years, he kept the young men of McCormick “Mac” Hall in line and took a personal interest in students’ lives, offering a sympathetic ear and sage academic and life advice when needed.

He had a fine tenor singing voice too, honed during his days as a music major. After graduation, in addition to his Pacific duties, he taught voice lessons and directed plays and operas throughout the area. He was one of the founders of Theatre in the Grove, where he performed in more than 30 roles. Trombley received the University’s first Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1983 and Trombley Square, the Forest Grove campus’ main outdoor plaza, is named for him.

In order to honor his giving spirit and the continuing impact on the many students who received support and nurturing from “Charlie” and his wife Betty, Pacific began its newest giving society in 2009. The Charles Trombley Society is part of the Annual Fund, a top fundraising priority.

The Society recognizes donors who give a leadership gift of $1,000 or more, funds that support today’s students in a variety of ways through scholarships and financial aid. Gifts can be directed to a particular college or program. Members receive invitations to special events and receptions, including the annual President’s Dinner, an insider’s newsletter from the President and discounts at the Pacific Bookstore. Members also gain the satisfaction of knowing their funds go directly to help shape a new generation of well-rounded global citizens.

Gene McIntyre ’60 remembers Trombley as a man with indefatigable energy, who wore a lot of hats beyond his official title. McIntyre credits Trombley and Meredith McVicker, then Pacific’s director of students and dean of what was then the School of Education, for lighting the spark. This took him from self-described marginal high school student to a doctorate in education and a successful career as a teacher and administrator.

A Giving Spirit | Charles Trombley Society THE POWER OF A GIFT

Just one $1,000 gift provides a student with books and supplies for one year.

If you and 8 of your closest friends gave $1,000, you could cover a student’s room and board ($8,500) in the residence halls.

It takes 32 $1,000 gifts to cover the cost of undergraduate tuition and fees ($32,000) for a year.

128 $1,000 gifts would cover four years ($128,000) of tuition and fees.

VISION 2020

GLOBALCOMMUNITY

It’s in a dry and cold desert a long way from Forest Grove’s green landscape, but the Navajo Service Learning Project in Lukachukai, Ariz. is often a life-changing experience for students who take part in the three-week class each January. Students earn two credits and satisfy Pacific’s cross-cultural requirement through activities like chopping wood for elders, assisting at the boarding school and taking part in traditional meals and activities with tribal members. The class is sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement.

Exploring cultures overseas, a cornerstone of the University’s curriculum, is the goal of more than 150 Pacific students each year as they embark on study abroad trips. Programs range from short-term trips of three weeks to year-long stays in countries spanning the globe–from China to Belize to Germany to South Africa. Not just for undergraduates, master’s and doctoral students participate in what many find to be life-changing experiences.

The health needs of the elderly in Nicaragua is the focus of an on-going program of Pacific’s College of Health Professions. Approximately 20 students and faculty from dental health science, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy and physician assistant studies have, for the past three years during the winter holiday break, worked with Nicaraguan physicians specializing in gerontology. The interprofessional team provides direct services to residents including healthcare information. The Jessie F. Richardson Foundation helps to fund these important outreach efforts.

Endowment, Trusts and Similar Funds

The endowment is the University’s commitment to the future. Because of this endowment we are able to plan beyond

the current year, so we have resources for scholarships, professorships and programs each and every year. Every dollar

provided by the endowment is a dollar that doesn’t come from tuition, which assists students and families.

Our endowment has now recovered most of the loss from the market downturn two years ago. The Pacific endowment

fund grows in two ways—additional gifts to the fund and successful investing. Creating an endowed fund, or making

contributions to an existing endowed fund, is a great way to create a lasting and permanent legacy at Pacific.

One-hundred percent of every gift made to Pacific goes to the area designated by each individual, corporation and foundation. We know it’s important to many of our supporters to choose where their gift goes.

When you do choose to give an unrestricted gift, Pacific is able to focus on the most urgent needs.

Full Time Enrollment The recent economic downturn has had a positive impact on enrollment with more individuals focusing on their continued education to better position themselves in a competitive market.

Pacific continues to build enrollment over the last five years with growth in both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Healthy enrollment is also attributed to ramped-up recruitment efforts, expanded offerings and a diligent focus on retention.

A strong academic reputation and increased visibility have also raised the University’s profile and bolstered the number of students who choose to attend Pacific.
