PACE-Net Plus is a project funded by the European Commission to reinforce EU-Pacific cooperation on Science, Technology & Innovation, and to

promote the development of mutually beneficial partnerships. Grant agreement n° 609490.

• Pacific STI roadmap is an

outcome/product emerged from findings of

PACENET and PACENETPlus (PNP)

• 3 year projects funded by the European

Commission aimed at strengthening

Europe-Pacific bi-regional cooperation in

STI.

CURRENT SITUATION

• Lack of integrated national and regional STI framework to tie in pockets of STI initiatives

• many nations lack the necessary ST&I capacities

• lack of adequately trained scientists and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) teachers,

• lack of scientific job prospects for graduates, too few people with skills in critical thinking based on scientific principles.

Pacific STI Roadmap

• PACE-Net Plus established a working

group to identify pathways to raise the

profile of Pacific research in order to

enable such a bi-regional dialogue in STI

And a set of recommendations to promote

STI in Pacific.

Why STI

• many challenges in the Pacific can benefit or solved using ST&I

initiatives

• For example -health, food security, environment, observation

systems,

• There are also many opportunities to enhance sustainable

responses to climate change given the unique position the Pacific

has at the forefront of environmental change. Eg Paris agreement

– relevant to the community and

– national,as well as regionally coordinated,

– inclusion of ST&I in national development

strategies

– coordination of regional research towards

common research strategies and related policies

and programmes in the Pacific region by

promoting the implementation of joint actions,

based on a proposed agenda.

RATIONALE

Roadmap is a set of recommendations

concrete actions to boost the efficiency and impact of national and regional research activities in order to:

assist regional leaders to achieve the objectives of their national development strategies, through national and regional research findings;

ensure Pacific research activities are connected to local and global networks in order to enhance their local impact as well as contribute to global solutions; and

foster bi-regional dialogues on the basis of excellent and equitable outcomes.

TARGET AUDIENCE

• The roadmap addresses regional leaders

(including parliaments and elders) to develop a

regional vision for STI in the Pacific to enable

them to define their joint future.

• Potentially powerful tool for regional leaders to

inform decision-making — that will impact on

future generations — on rational and regionally

derived findings of scientific research.
