“Americanism means the virtues of courage, honor, justice, truth, sincerity, and hardihood—the virtues that made America. The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living and the get-rich-quick theory of life.”

Theodore RooseveltAmerican 26th US president (1901-09), 1858-1919

We live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are afforded the freedom to do just about whatever we choose. We can say what we want and even color outside the lines a bit. We also have a responsibility with this great American

Legacy; to perpetuate it and cultivate it for the generations to come.

I met a very intelligent gentleman named Klaus Hagelganz. He was such a pleasure to spend time with and is a Journeyman Machinist. One thing he told me continues to stick in my head and hit my heart. I asked him if he came to America to enjoy the freedom we have so abundantly here in the States. He looked at me like I was born yesterday and said, “Kim, many other countries enjoy freedom similar to the United States, it’s the Opportunity, the Abundant Opportunity that inspired my choice to come to the U.S”. You can read about Klaus in this issue. He created a great company called World Class Technology.

I did a lot of traveling in September; from Casper, WY where I met two brothers working hard on their fabrication business in pursuit of the American dream, and making it happen through hard work and determination. These two brothers put all they had on the line, literally, lived in the warehouse they worked in and pulled some real long hours working metal and working hard at school to get their degrees. IMX in Vegas; I saw many great machine tool builders and I was inspired by the training and the world manufacturing theme I kept coming upon. Pacific Coast Machine Tool Show; Though not as big as it once was, I met some great people using great tools and processes with a stead fast vision of making something here in the US. Smart Map Expo in Tri-Cities, WA; Beautiful wine country and some very nice people that totally believe in the American Dream. This area has some great schools for machining apprentice programs and the city government really pushes and supports U.S. manufacturing. I met an organization there called GLAM, Girls Learning About Manufacturing. Wow, I love it!

Manufacturing is alive; we just need to make sure we push our leaders to know the U.S. is strong when we make something here, and when we buy our own products. I often wonder if we as Americans were to make every effort to spend the same money we spend now, on products that were made in the United States, if we would have any economic challenges at all in this great country.

I read this quote and was going to start with it, but we don’t like to harp on negative stuff. I thought I would end with it though; Only Americans, can hurt America.

Mazak Optonics to Introduce New Laser Technology Advancements at FABTECH

Mazak Optonics is the exhibitor to see at FABTECH 2011 for the latest advancements in laser-cutting technology. At the show, taking place November 14-17 at McCormick Place in Chicago, the company

will showcase a wide range of applications and demonstrate several new machines, including its first fiber laser, in booth 1148.

Making its debut at FABTECH, the new fiber laser from Mazak Opton-ics is built on the company’s OPTIPLEX platform. It achieves extremely high speeds via an IPG fiber resonator, which yields faster cuts through thin gauge material and significantly reduces operating costs.

The company’s new OPTIPLEX Flexible 2 Pallet Changer Job Shop Laser provides high throughput, AO/5 automated setup technolo-gies and rugged construction. During booth demonstrations, show attendees will experience the machine’s new user-friendly PreView II touch screen control and new 4,000-watt type 10 resonator that

lowers operating costs.

Visitors to the Mazak Optonics booth will also get to witness the new performance power of the SuperTurbo-X Mark III. The company took the already popular laser-cutting system and made it even more advanced by increasing its power output to 6,000 watts. This boost allows the system to meet the unique demands of processing thicker mild steel and stainless materials.

Mazak will also introduce a new modular material automation sys-tem that is expandable from one up to four laser-cutting machines. A variety of loading tables, stocking towers up to 40 shelves, unload stations and workpiece storage towers can be utilized to develop solutions to meet specific operational needs. The new line controller helps increase system flexibility and improves throughput.

The STX Mark III RTC that expands laser services beyond flat plate will also be demonstrated. This unique 2D laser system integrates a rotary chuck for tube and pipe cutting with the ability to tap and chamfer in a single setup on one machine. For more infomation call Bob Herling 800-254-0415, www.DWMachinerySales.com

Airbus and Boeing Co. are cranking up jetliner deliveries

Just as new turmoil hits financial markets and economic upheaval continues to threaten airlines and plane makers alike.Yet there’s cautious optimism among the people who put planes in the air. Not pilots or engineers. The real power sources behind jets are the money managers who fund aircraft purchases and lease the planes to airlines. Many of them are gathering this week in Barcelona for the annual European meeting of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading.

Airplane financiers see opportunity because air traffic remains robust in many parts of the world, and high fuel prices are prompting carriers to replace old gas-guzzling planes with newer fuel-efficient models. Such de-mand is likely to continue. In recent months, such carriers as AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc. and Air France-KLM SA have committed to order hundreds of planes, mostly to modernize their fleets.

“Demand for new aircraft over the next several years is exceeding supply,” says John Plueger, president of Air Lease Corp.

While demand remains strong, it’s another question whether airlines can

muster the cash to pay for planes when they roll out of the factories. Taking ownership of a new jetliner usually entails paying Boeing or the Airbus unit of European Aeronau-tics Defense & Space Co. tens of millions of dollars. That generally requires some kind of financing, which has tightened significantly in recent weeks, airlines and airplane lessors say.

One likely solution: government subsidies. During the economic crisis two years ago, export-credit agencies in Europe and the U.S. helped finance roughly one-third of all deliveries, allowing Boeing and Airbus to keep production high and staffing largely intact. Such agencies as the U.S. Export-Import Bank rarely lend money outright. Instead, they provide state guarantees that make com-mercial bankers feel more com-fortable about lending.

Domhnal Slattery, chief executive of Irish lessor Avolon Aerospace Leasing Ltd. and a veteran of past downturns, predicts next year will be the biggest year ever for jetliner export-credit financing. He says

the cost of government guarantees has increased under new international rules intended to avoid overheating orders, but since interest rates are extraordinarily low, the total funding cost to airlines remains manageable.

Another funding source is lessors themselves, who often buy planes from airlines and immediately lease them back to the carriers. This two-step, similar to mortgaging a house, frees up airlines’ cash while helping les-sors grow. Many lessors are able to do this now because they amassed war chests over recent years.

Such funding is aimed only at new planes, however. Many airlines also need to refinance older models, and industry players say that is getting tough. In years past, second-tier airlines would buy used planes from top-tier carriers. Today, with Airbus and Boeing churning out so many new planes and governments helping sales, even tiny start-ups can fly spiffy new models. That makes older planes harder to resell—and harder to finance.

“We’re certainly going to have a funding squeeze on older aircraft,” predicts Bertrand Grabowski, a member of the management board of Germany’s DVB Bank SE, one of the few European commercial banks still financing aircraft. As a result, more older planes will get retired, potentially prompt-ing owners to write down their value sooner than expected, he says.

Air France Places Aircraft Orders

Air France-KLM said it had placed orders for 110 aircraft, including options, in a deal potentially worth as much as $27 billion at list prices as the Franco-Dutch airline seeks to upgrade its long-haul fleet and to reduce its fuel costs.

The order was split between Airbus, a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. NV, and its U.S. rival, Boeing Co.. Typically, both plane manufacturers offer buyers substantial discounts on list prices for large orders.

The new aircraft will allow more than 15% reduction of fuel consumption, Air France-KLM said. The airline will finance the acquisition of these aircraft with cash flow generated from its own operations.

Fuel consumption has become increasingly important for airlines as the price of oil remains stubbornly high, even though it has fallen from peak levels. After a withering downturn for the industry dur-ing 2008 and 2009 that saw dozens of carriers go out of business, airlines are determined to keep costs under control. Among the measures, airlines are buying more fuel-efficient planes.

Airbus has enjoyed considerable success in winning orders due to its fuel-efficient version of its best-selling A320 line of planes. The updated plane, dubbed the A320neo, for “new engine option,” helped the Toulouse, France-based plane maker rack up a record 730 aircraft orders and commitments at the Paris Air Show this summer.

The airline placed a firm order for 25 Airbus A350-900 jets and signed an option for 35 more. The list price for each of these aircraft is $268 million.

It also ordered 25 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and signed an option for another 25, Boeing said in a separate statement. The list price of this airliner was $218 million in 2010.

The first Boeing Dreamliner bought by Air France-KLM will start flying for KLM in 2016 and the first of the new A350-900 will be operating for Air France in 2018. Both airlines will end up using both models.

Air France-KLM selected Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC’s (RR.LN) Trent XWB engine to power its Airbus A350-900s, the first time that the airline has chosen to equip its aircraft with engines supplied by the U.K. engine manufacturer.

Air France-KLM appears to be planning for the longer term after Chief Executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon last week told Dow Jones Newswires that the airline likely would scale back its capacity expan-sion program for next summer in view of the gloomier economic outlook. “We had been working on the assumption of a 5% increase, but now we’re aiming at 2% or 3% ... but using larger aircraft so that the growth will be virtuous in economic terms,” he said.

Defense Cuts Will Shift Money To Repair Of Existing Equipment

By Marjorie Censer

When Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced funding cuts last month, some in the defense industry shuddered. But for others, the announced cuts will generate new opportunities to revitalize older systems.

It’s not unusual for a program termination to refocus attention on an older program, but analysts said this shift may become more common as the Pentagon’s budget tightens and it is forced to work with the equipment it already owns.

This time around, Gates announced the Defense Department will end a Marine Corps vehicle program with prime contractor General Dynamics and will instead direct money toward repairing and upgrading its existing amphibious assault vehicle, built by BAE Systems. Additionally, he delayed part of Lockheed Martin’s F-35 strike-fighter aircraft program and said the Pentagon would buy more of Boeing’s F/A-18 aircraft.

“I think that there are going to be more and more examples like that,” said Todd Harrison, a defense analyst with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.

Because the military in recent years invested in many new programs, which in lots of cases have not come to fruition, it did not spend as much

on large-scale repair and modernization of older equipment, Harrison added. “As a result, we still have . . . this lagging need to recapitalize large parts of our force,” he said.

The defense industry, keeping a close eye on programs vulnerable to cancellation, is now positioning itself for these repair efforts.

BAE Systems is hoping to win work repairing its amphibious assault vehicle, but the company anticipates competition.

“We don’t expect to get any favoritism out of the customer because we are the [original manufacturer], but I do think there are some advantages of being the designer of this vehicle,” said Ann Hoholick, BAE’s vice president of new vehicles and amphibious systems.

Faced with a tighter budget, BAE has tried to be equally prepared to bid on a new program or a competition to modernize older systems, said Bob Murphy, the company’s executive vice president for product sectors.

“You can’t get wed to any one thing, because all I can tell you is, as the future unfolds, what looks like a very high priority today . . . can change very rapidly,” Murphy said. “You’ve got to be prepared for the change.”

Loren Thompson, a defense industry consultant at the Lexington Institute, said it’s common for a program termination to create new work on an existing piece of equipment. But, often “the company that benefits from a cancellation is not the company whose program is canceled,” he said.

“In this environment, weapons spending is a zero-sum game,” Thompson added. “One company’s gain is another company’s loss.”

AeroVironment Award

AeroVironment, Inc. announced that it received a $6,874,175 firm-fixed-price order from the U.S. Air Force under an existing contract with the U.S. Army. The order comprises new digital Raven(r) small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and initial spares

packages. The systems and spares packages are sched-uled for delivery within the next several months.

The Air Force Security Forces plan to employ Ra-ven systems to enhance situational awareness and security at bases worldwide. This initial order will pro-vide systems for training of

Air Force personnel to support broader deployment.

“Real-time aerial video from small unmanned aircraft systems has proven invaluable to warfighters on the battlefield, and can similarly benefit Security Forces at Air Force bases,” said Tom Herring, Aero-Vironment senior vice president and general manager, Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

“For a fraction of the cost of larger unmanned aircraft systems, Raven,

Puma and Wasp systems deliver situational awareness directly to the troops who need it, helping them operate more effectively and saving lives. With our customers looking for ways to do more with much less, small UAS provide tremendous value at a relatively low cost.”

The Raven unmanned aircraft is a 4.2-pound, backpackable, hand-launched sensor platform that provides day and night, real-time video imagery for “over the hill” and “around the corner” reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition in support of tactical units. U.S. armed forces use Raven systems extensively for missions such as base security, route reconnaissance, mission planning and force protection. Each Raven system typically consists of three aircraft, two ground control stations and spares.

Toshiba Corporation Selects Applied Materials’ Predictive Scheduling Solution to Boost Lithography Ef-ficiency

Applied Materials, Inc. announced that semiconduc-tor and storage products company Toshiba Corpora-tion has purchased Applied’s SmartSched® predic-tive scheduling software to improve the capacity and efficiency of its photolithography operations. Installation of the first phase of this breakthrough software solution began in August at Toshiba’s Fab 4 facility in Yokkaichi, Japan - currently one of the world’s largest 300mm “mega fab” chip production factories.1

“Unlocking litho capacity was identified as a critical step in increasing output in our manufacturing op-erations,” said Masanori Morikawa, senior manager of manufacturing engineering at the Toshiba Yokka-ichi Operation. “We selected Applied’s SmartSched solution because it offers the quickest, most cost-effective route to optimize throughput and reduce cycle time, focusing first on lithography steps. We plan on working with Applied to extend SmartSched capability to meet additional Toshiba production requirements so we can improve output and equip-

ment utilization in multiple areas of our manufacturing operations.”

“SmartSched software is like the ultimate efficiency expert - addressing one of the industry’s biggest issues: managing lot movement to maximize the utilization of each tool,” said Charlie Pappis, group vice president and general manager of Applied Global Services. “We’re extremely pleased to be able to help a technology leader such as Toshiba increase the return on their existing lithography assets. We believe that all 300mm fabs can benefit significantly from our SmartSched software solution, extending beyond litho to other bottleneck tool areas of a factory. SmartSched software aligns very well with a key objective in the ITRS roadmap to reduce wafer cycle time.”

Applied’s SmartSched software is the industry’s first and only commercially available predictive scheduling solution for optimizing the movement of wafers through the litho cell - considered to be the most complex and capital intensive area of the fab and a frequent bottleneck in production. It is also an area where costs are expected to continue to rise with growing device complexity. SmartSched uses proprietary predic-tive algorithms to help customers optimize litho tool time, converting underutilization into expanded capacity. Greater litho tool utilization also means that customers can potentially delay or avoid the purchase of new equipment - providing a significant return on their SmartSched software investment.

The SmartSched system is built on Applied’s proven Advanced Productivity software platform that includes capacity planning, scheduling, dispatching and simulation tech-nologies that are used by virtually every leading 300mm fab worldwide. Together, they form a unique, integrated solution for optimum manufacturing operations based on highly accurate planning processes. For more information on Applied’s comprehen-sive range of real-time decision-making products, visit www.appliedmaterials.com/software-semi.

World Class TechnologyThe name says it all; the highest class of manufacturing is esteemed worldwide!

Klaus Hagelganz started his journeyman machinist program when he was 16 years old and worked his apprenticeship in Argentina. The company in Argentina was an American-owned company who sponsored Klaus in his machining schooling. Klaus felt an early love for his vocation and was very proud to be making something with his mind and his hands.

There was one revolution after another in those days (1950’s -1970’s) and when Klaus got married he had to come to grips with the fact the military was taking over and he needed to move to a land of opportunity. Klaus says the choices at that time were Canada, Germany, and the United States.

Klaus chose the United States. With a job contract and an affidavit in hand from a friend in LA, Klaus and his wife moved to America. In those days, Klaus says, craftsmen were always welcome and there was always a good job opening for trained craftsmen.

After a few years Klaus moved to work for a mold making company in CA, Caco Pacific and specialized in what was re-ferred to as duplicating. “Back then”, Klaus says, “we made the electrodes for the EDM Machines”. Klaus used sinker machines most of his life and said EDM wire machines came into their own around 20 years ago. Wire EDM machines have been commercially available since the late 1970s.

By the mid-eighties the machine tool and generator designs had changed dramatically. Unlike the early “sewing machines” the Wire EDM machine had developed into a machine tool.

Though the basic concept of metal removal is the same as on a Die Sinker, a Wire EDM machine, by its very design is quite different. For instance, all Wire EDM machines are CNC controlled while there are both manual and CNC Die Sinkers.

Performance jumped from 1 to 6 and then 12 in2/hr. Competition between EDM manufacturers continued through the eighties and performance improved.

Today, CNC Wire manufacturers boast “advertised” first pass machining rates in excess of 25 in2/hr.

High current genera-tors, higher flushing pressures requiring stiffer, more rigid tool-ing and premium wire (electrodes) have all had an impact on cutting speeds.

Klaus had other EDM machines before the Mitsubishis and has had them removed from his facility. He explained that when you are making very high precision parts and molds you must use the best equipment. “Mit-subishi is class 1”, Klaus said. He continued, “We have 2 wire machines (Mitsubishi FA10PS) and one sinker (Mitsubishi EA12V), and they are all very precise and very reliable.”

Klaus said, “We specialize in metal injection molding and we have been doing this since the 80s. We inject the powdered metal into a high precision mold and then sinter (High Heat Process) the parts in our precision furnaces to perfection. We attained world-class status

over the years. These EDM machines have helped us make molds that keep us at the cutting edge of world-class technology. The craftsmen that program and run these machines are the foundation of manufactur-ing. Everything starts with a tool! Building something is what made the United States.” He contined, “We need to build things again. The U.S. needs to import some great CNC operators/machinists and programmers that know the trade and that know how to build a tool from scratch. This is why we hire the best people!”

Ted Lukins, Shop Foreman and Juergen Bathen, Manufacturing Engineer, both agree that World Class treats their people very well and the micro molding they do is in a class of its own. Ted says, “The capabilities of the World Class shop are very high tolerance. We have created our own tooling that is proprietary and keeps us doing business with the top tier in orthodontics and other medical fields.”

Aviation High soars into the future, landing next to Boeing Field

Some gravel, some dirt, a lot of weeds and, in one corner, a portable toilet. That’s about all that’s been sitting in this vacant lot north of the Museum of Flight along East Marginal Way South.

To imagine this as the site of a cutting-edge educational facility that will help produce tomorrow’s engineers, scientists, pilots, technicians and entrepreneurs takes vision.

Fortunately, vision is the common denominator among those who will gather Wefor the groundbreaking of the $43.5 million Raisbeck Aviation High School.

Donors and dreamers, educators and museum professionals, industry and government leaders, architects, planners and builders, even students have their stamp on the three-story school building due to open in 2013.

“We want to inspire the generation that’s going to write the story of the second century of flight,” said Douglas King, Museum of Flight CEO.King said the museum — long before he came on board early this year

— decided its goal wasn’t just to collect and preserve aviation history but to help shape it.

Aviation High School, a public school that’s part of the Highline School District, actually opened in 2004. It operated for its first few years at South Seattle Community College and, more recently, on the campus of a Des Moines middle school.

“We’ve been nomads,” said Reba Gilman, principal since the school opened.

From the school’s inception, the museum has been envisioned as its eventual home, Gilman said. Not only will it provide ready access to the museum’s resources, it will put the school at the doorstep of some 200 flight-related businesses operating out of the Boeing Field area.

“Our goal is that every student is connected with a mentor in the aviation/aerospace industry,” Gilman said. “We want them [the mentors] to come for lunch with students, share their education and career pathways, and be a true member of our learning community.”

Every aspect of the building will reinforce its mission, Gilman said, in-cluding project labs in which students can build robots, rockets, model airplanes — even a small airplane.

Instead of athletics, the school will field “sports of the mind” teams, on which students use science, technology, engineering and communication skills to tackle real-world projects.

The building, designed by Bassetti Architects and being built by Porter Brothers Construction, will have a high-tech computer lab as well as meeting spaces where small groups can collaborate. A balcony looks

out toward Boeing Field, where some 300,000 takeoffs and landings a year reinforce the nature of the school’s curriculum.

The museum also will benefit from the juxtaposition, King said, by tapping the energy and vitality of high-school students to help with exhibits and programs at the museum.

When the school moves to its new quarters, its new name will honor the commitment of James and Sherry Raisbeck of Seattle, who have donated $3 million toward the school’s construction. James Raisbeck heads Raisbeck Engineering and Raisbeck Commercial Air Group, in-novators in aviation design.

Boeing has contributed $4 million. Jim Albaugh, Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO, said the school could be an important part of producing the company’s future workforce, noting that half of Boeing’s engineers are expected to retire over the next five years.

Gilman said the school is looking for students “who are inspired by aviation and aerospace” and ready to pursue a rigorous education in “STEM” subjects: science, technology, engineering and math. The school intends to stay small to focus effectively on individual students. This fall’s freshman class of 115 was drawn from a pool of some 275 applicants, Gilman said.

Half of the school’s 425 students come from the Highline School Dis-trict; the others are drawn from a wide area around Puget Sound. Of 330 students who graduated in the school’s first four classes, 95 percent have gone on to college.

Marco was in Aviation High School’s initial graduating class, 2008 — the same year he got his pilot’s license. This year, he graduated from Florida’s Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, completing four years of curriculum in three.

He soon will head to basic training in the Air Force, where he hopes to become an officer and fighter pilot. The value of his experience at Aviation High School, which included learning directly from pilots and aviation engineers, was evident at Embry-Riddle.

Applied Materials Clears Critical Roadblock to EUV Lithography with New Photomask Etch System

Applied Materials, Inc. advanced the state-of-the art in photomask technology with its new Applied Centura® Tetra™ EUV Advanced Reticle Etch system.

Overcoming a major hurdle to the adoption of EUV1 lithography, the new Tetra EUV system solves the critical and unmet challenge of etching the new EUVL pho-tomasks with nanometer-level accuracy and world-class defect performance to enable the fabrica-tion of multiple new generations

of high-performance semiconductor chips.

“Our new Tetra EUV system expands the capabilities of Applied’s industry-standard Tetra etch platform, which is used by the great ma-jority of advanced mask makers today,” said Ajay Kumar, vice president and general manager of the Mask and TSV2 Etch product division at Applied Materials. “Applied continues to invest in technologies that are important to our customers and will enable next-generation design nodes. We have already shipped multiple systems and we are working closely with virtually every leading mask maker to help the semicon-ductor industry accommodate this significant technology inflection.”

EUVL photomasks are fundamentally different than conventional photomasks that selectively transmit 193nm wavelength light to proj-ect circuit patterns onto the wafer. At the 13.5nm wavelength used by EUVL, all photomask materials are opaque, so the mask contains complex multi-layer mirrors to reflect circuit patterns onto the wafer instead. The Tetra EUV system is designed to etch new materials and complex layer stacks to meet the stringent pattern accuracy, surface finish and defectivity specifications required to achieve high lithography yields when operating in this reflected mode.

The Tetra EUV system is part of Applied Materials’ comprehensive portfolio of solutions to optimize the productivity and yield of its customers’ photomask and lithography operations. The system is supported by Applied Global Services, the industry’s most compre-hensive service and support network, to maximize system uptime - a vital priority for mask etch tools. For more information on Applied Materials’ lithography-enabling solutions, visit www.appliedmaterials.com/advanced-litho.

Business Jet Sales May Grow in 2012

Honeywell predicts that business jet sales may rise in 2012, spurred by demand from emerging economies. Business-jet sales may increase worldwide starting in 2012 as emerging-market demand blunts a slug-gish U.S. economy that fueled a probable decline this year, Honeywell International Inc. projected.

Purchase expectations are growing in Asia, followed by the Middle East and Africa, while the free-fall in developed markets like North America following 2008’s recession has stabilized, according to an annual survey of 1,500 companies by the Morris Township, New Jersey-based avionics and cockpit-instruments maker.

Companies also have cash to spend now, compensating for individu-als that might hold back amid economic uncertainty, Rob Wilson, president of Honeywell’s business and general aviation unit, said in an interview. Replacement of aging planes has combined with international travel demand to boost potential sales of longer-range models, he said Cautious optimism” will be a theme at the National Business Aviation Association’s annual conference that is in Las Vegas,

Wilson said. “We’re figuring out how to make the most of it in un-certain times.”Customers continue to say that they still intend to buy new aircraft in the next five years, though some have pushed out the timing to the latter half of that period, Wilson said.

Air-travel demand has been boosted by growing trade between Africa and China, a run-up in commodity prices and oil, and the exploration of new business opportunities in those regions, Wilson said.

Global deliveries probably will decline to 600 to 650 from last year’s 732, then climb in 2012 to less than 700, Honeywell projected.

The percentage of active fleets comprised by used jets for sale has declined about four points from a peak in 2009 amid the financial crisis, the survey found. Business-jet manufacturers are building new models with greater range to lure buyers away from the used-aircraft market. General Dynamics Corp.’s Gulfstream, Textron Inc.’s Cessna and Embraer SA are all developing new planes to enter service over the next two years.

Solid Form Fabrication, Inc. If it can be conceived, it can be fabricated, by

Solid Form Fabrication!

In McMinnville, Oregon nestled in the middle of wine country you will find some very nice wine from some great vineyards. You can drive through the country and view farms that grow all kinds of

vegetables and varies crops, and you will find a fabrication company that can design, water jet cut, weld, and fabricate anything that can be dreamed of; Solid Form Fabrication, Inc.

Two brothers, Deven & Keath Paolo from the small city of Yamhill worked the family farm most of their l i fe just l ike their parents and their grand p a re n t s d i d .

The Brothers were raised on the same farm that was pioneered by their grand parents in the early 20’s, and like their ancestors they worked long hard hours building the family farm. The oppor tunity they were afforded in the land of the free was a great education; Ke-ath schooled in all

aspects of metalworking including machining and fabrication, and Deven a mechanical engineer and business grad apply the great work ethic they learned from their parents to their own business. No job is too small or too big for the brothers and they both are hands on.

Deven & Keath Paolo created their business together in October of 2007 after looking to buy various companies. The brothers came close to buying a company after many months of searching, a busi-ness that builds fermentation tanks for the brewing industry. They came close but opted not to buy that company. After a few years (since 2004) of searching to no avail for a business to work together they decided they had what it took to build their own business with their many years of metalworking and business experience.

It started with a strong name that is repre-sentative of the dy-namic duo. Solid; in the state of matter, characterized by resis-tance to deformation & changes in volume. Form; to give shape or visible structure. Fabrication; A form made whole by unit-ing its parts, formed by art & labor.

In the spring of 2009, Solid Form chose to purchase the Omax® 80X water jet as a key member to their arsenal. After an exhausting search and interviewing over 30 manufacturing companies nation

Page 25: Pacific NW A2Z Metalworker OCT/NOV Edition

wide, the resounding facts helped them make their decision. Omax was said to have great customer service with little machine down time, a very functional gantry system, a great pump system, and a software package that worked well. They were sold on the Omax

waterjet and h a v e n e v e r looked back. In fact when a s k e d w h a t their next wa-ter jet would be, it was an easy answer, Omax!

The Omax wa-ter jet purchase opened up a whole new di-

mension for the business. The Omax can cut everything Deven said. I can use the Omax for thin sheet metal cutting with intricate cut outs to thick steel inches thick. One machine and all the options of cutting anything from granite, glass, tubing, to aluminum and steel. We have increased sales every year and the Omax has been a great revenue generator for our company!

The OMAX 80X JetMachining Center series are bridge-style waterjet machines. All 80X models are delivered with the durable, factory-aligned OMAX MAXJET®5i Nozzle and a Bulk Abrasive Delivery System. They also feature Intelli-TRAX™, the high preci-

sion, and traction drive technol-ogy designed exclusively for the abrasive waterjet environment. This robust and reliable system requires little maintenance and maximizes both machine time and profit margins. The OMAX 80X is ideal for cutting larger or

multiple part projects.

Growth foreseen for piston, turboprop planes

Demand for turboprop planes is expected to bound back quicker than demand for piston-powered aircraft, Douglas Royce, an aerospace analyst with Forecast International, said Demand for piston-powered and turboprop aircraft is expected to total 24,000 aircraft worth about $28 billion over the next 10 years, according to a new forecast.

The forecast by Forecast International includes 18,400 piston aircraft worth $8 billion and nearly 6,000 turboprops worth about $20.5 billion.

While production is expected to increase slightly from 2011 to 2012, stronger growth won’t begin until after next year, the report by the Newtown, Conn.-based company said.

Forecast International provides market intelligence, forecasting, proprietary research and consulting services for several industries, including aerospace. The forecast does not include business jets and light sport aircraft.

Manufacturers are “seeing signs of improvement, but it’s from a very low base,” Douglas Royce, Forecast International aerospace analyst, said. Demand from areas around the globe with higher economic growth

— including emerging economies in China, India and Brazil — won’t grow quickly enough to replace lost orders from customers in North America and Europe.

Demand for turboprop planes, such as Cessna Aircraft’s 208 Caravan and Hawker Beechcraft’s King Air, is expected to bounce back quicker than demand for piston-powered aircraft, Royce said.

“The turboprops tend to have a higher proportion of commercial operators using them than the general aviation piston aircraft,” Royce said. “They’ve done fairly well even through the downturn because the aircraft are used as income generators.”

Turboprops are used for a variety of applications, such as carrying small freight, charter operations and special missions.

Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft are well positioned in that market, Royce said.

Royce expects turboprop production to grow from 387 planes last year to 509 this year. That includes 100 aircraft used in agriculture.

Turboprop production is expected to be flat for the next two years, before beginning to improve in 2014.

In the piston market, Royce expects production to increase from 900 in 2010 to 1,000 aircraft this year.

Premier Precision

The entire Great Western Registrar team are certified auditors to ISO9001/AS9100. Jamie says that this is very important to his team, because, he says, “When we call Great Western with a question, we don’t talk to a secretary who has to relay the message to an auditor. We get answers immediately.”

Great Western Registrar is competitive in their pricing, Jamie says, and they are ad-ditionally flexible to work with. Jamie says there were several scheduling issues with employee vacations and time off, and Great Western was extremely accommodating. Ja-mie says they are additionally very responsive and accessible.

ISO/AS9100 certification is not only a must have requirement to do business with many of PPG’s customers, but Jamie additionally believes that it continues to help the com-pany excel.

J & M Machine

J&M’s first auditor from Great Western was Burt Gold. “I was so nervous about the audit”, Marj says, “because a 3rd party auditor could

make or break us. We knew we were doing the right things for Boeing, but we didn’t know if this would be satisfactory for an outside auditing firm.”

“In the first hour that Burt spent with us, he allayed all of our fears”, Marj said. “He was fantastic and knowledgeable”, she continued.

Great Western’s Burt spent 2 and a half days to conduct the audit initial assessment, and the company passed easily with no majors and just a couple of minors that were easily remedied.

“We learned a lot from the Great Western Registrar audit, and I credit Burt with helping us to reach even a higher level of performance.

Powill Manufacturing & Eng

“In our last ISO9001/AS9100 audit in Q1 of this year”, Luminita Krolik, quality manager for Powill Manufacturing with 7 years tenure at the company, said, “We had zero findings. The Great Western audit team, which in-cluded Deb Gilpin and Deborah Leary, said that zero findings is just about unheard of. We are really proud of this accomplishment.”

Jim says the Great Western team is extremely knowledgeable and very thorough in their audits. “Nearly everything we build defies gravity”, he said, “and we want to ensure that we use the best auditors to evaluate our processes. In the end, they save us time and money.” He continued, “You get what you pay for, and Great Western Registrar is the best value for Powill Manufacturing.”

Kevin Wolfe, Shop Foreman for Powill says People’s lives depend upon the products we build, and we need to ensure we are building the best parts available in the industry. Great Western’s audits help us to feel confident that we doing the right things for our customers.”

Valley Machine

The company certified to the ISO:9001 AS 9100 standard 5 years ago, long before many other machine shops in the area made this significant investment. Roger says, “Great Western was highly recommended as the Registrar back then, and they saved us dur-ing during our first experience with the certification process.” He elaborated, “We thought we were ready to certify and we brought Great Western Registrar into our facility. Hayley Brodish and Burt Gold were the 2 auditors who came to see us for a pre-assessment. They asked some very relevant questions that we were’t prepared to answer, and they helped us to understand that we needed to do some additional preparation in order to pass certification.

Valley Machine spent the next several months preparing for the audit so that they passed the first time with Great Western, Roger says that the Great Western team has continued to provide experienced and professional supp-port ever since Valley Machine certified to ISO/AS9100. In fact they now have a local Great Western auditor in the Seattle, WA area, so there are no travel costs incurred.

First fuel cell and hydrogen energy station in Or-ange County

The DOE issued a statement in support of the commissioning of the world’s first tri-gener-ation fuel cell and hydrogen energy station at the Orange County Sanita-tion District’s

wastewater treatment plant in Fountain Valley, CA. The fuel cell is a combined heat, hydrogen, and power system that co-produces hydrogen in addition to electricity and heat. The hydrogen produced by the system is sent to a hydrogen fueling station that will be open to the public and can support between 25 and 50 fuel cell electric vehicle fill-ups per day. The fuel cell also produces approximately 250 kW of power for use by the wastewater treatment plant. This on-site approach to hydrogen production advances hydrogen infrastructure technologies that will accelerate the use of this renewable fuel.

“Innovations like this demonstrate how American ingenuity and targeted

investment can accelerate breakthroughs in the hydrogen and fuel cell industry while driving the clean energy economy forward,” says Steve Chalk, DOE’s deputy assistant secretary for renewable energy. “By providing the added value of electricity and heat, this approach provides a significant step in overcoming economic challenges with hydrogen refueling infrastructure.”Silevo comes out of stealth with “breakthrough” hybrid crystalline, thin-film PV module technology

Silevo’s cell structure

Silevo advised that it had exited its stealth mode with its new propri-etary Triex technology. The hybrid solar solution is said to combine high-performance crystalline silicon N-type substrates, thin-film pas-sivation layers and a tunneling oxide layer in one solar module. The solar module is powered by the company’s tunneling junction, which it states allows for the three materials to cohesively work together and produce high-efficiency, competitive module costs with optimum energy yield.

Silevo’s corporate headquarters in California’s Silicon Valley are sup-ported by its R&D and manufacturing operation base in Asia. The company recently finalized US$33 million in financing with New Margin, a new lead investor, which was joined by GSR & DT Capital. The company intends to use the financing to develop a high-volume manufacturing facility in Hangzhou, China and explore advanced re-search to bring Triex to 24% conversion efficiency.

MIT’s Technology Review Features Solar3D

Solar3D, Inc., the developer of a breakthrough 3-dimensional solar cell technology to maximize the conversion of sunlight into electric-ity, has been featured in an article published by MIT’s prestigious technological journal, Technology Review. Inspired by light management techniques used in fiber optic devices, the company’s innovative solar cell technology utilizes a 3-dimensional design to trap sunlight inside micro-photovoltaic structures where photons bounce around until they are converted into electrons. So-lar3D’s management believes that this breakthrough solar cell design will dramatically change the economics of solar energy.

“It is exciting to see our innovative 3-dimensional solar cell high-lighted by a publication like Technology Review,” commented Jim Nelson, President and CEO of Solar3D. “The publication recognizes the top advances in a broad spectrum of science. We feel gratified to be counted as part of the great breakthroughs among the advances in solar technology.”

With the design complete, Solar3D has begun the process of evaluat-ing methods of fabricating a prototype along with techno-economic analysis of the new solar cell. The article reported that Solar3D’s new 3-dimensional solar cell will have two principal sections: the Light Collector section and the Micro Photovoltaic section. The purpose of the design is to eliminate reflection and electron re-absorption.

Nelson continued, “The article describes our focus on mass produc-tion and competitiveness. We focus on both of those items to help us move closer to grid parity. Ultimately, our overriding objective is to make solar energy affordable to the world and to achieve its destiny of becoming the primary source of energy for mankind.”

As the Company nears the completion of its prototype in the next few months, management will seek a fabrication partner, most likely in the semiconductor industry, who will participate in bringing the product to market.

Mazak To Export Kentucky-Built Machines

Mazak Corporation announced that it has begun exporting machines designed and built at the company’s Florence, Kentucky plant to Japan and other countries in Asia, as well as to Brazil and other South American countries.

Initially, Mazak Corporation will export a range of Kentucky-built models to these countries beginning in October with the QUICK TURN SMART Series. Exports to Europe will begin with the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY Multi-Tasking machines and the ORBITEC 20 machining centers, both of which are being featured at EMO in Hannover, Germany, September 19-24.

The decision to export machines from Kentucky comes as a natu-ral progression for Mazak Corporation, reflecting the company’s continued growth in the North American market, the ongoing commitment to the highest quality standards, and incorporating new product designs from the U.S.

“Exporting Kentucky-designed and built machines reaffirms the fact that the United States remains a very competitive manufacturing environment for advanced technology products,” said Brian Papke, president of Mazak Corporation. “In fact, we see the exporting of Kentucky-built machines as a catalyst that lays the groundwork for future expansion of our North American manufacturing operations.” Papke further advised with regard to the manufacturing industry,

“The fundamentals of our North American manufacturing sector are solid. To ensure its continued strength and viability as the global eco-nomic climate changes, the U.S. together with industry leaders must support investment in new technology that accelerates productivity, as well as improving workforce education and training. But if done correctly, there are significant opportunities for manufacturing in North America.”

ISO 9001:2008 certified, Mazak Corporation opened its North American Headquarters in Florence, Kentucky in 1974, and since then, has continued to expand and invest in its manufacturing operations. Over the last three decades, Mazak has expanded its manufacturing operations in the U.S. 15 times, growing the facility to over 600,000 sq. ft.

Mazak currently manufactures over 28 series of machines and over 100 models at its Kentucky plant, including vertical 3-, 4- and 5-axis machining centers, NEXUS turning centers and NEXUS Multi-Tasking machines.

Most recently, Mazak has invested $13 million in expanding the Kentucky facility’s manufacturing capabilities through additional floor space and significant technology upgrades. These investments will continue through 2011, with the installation of an additional 5-axis 10-meter double-column Mazak VERSATECH machining center for increasing large-size part production capabilities and three Mazak Optonics OPTIPLEX 3015 laser fabrication centers in an FMS system that improve the processing of sheet metal machine components. A characteristic of the plant is that Mazak uses its own multitasking INTEGREX technology and PALLETECH sys-tems to provide the same attractive levels of productivity offered to customers.

Mazak applies their unique Production-On-Demand approach to manufacturing in its Kentucky plant, which incorporates modular assembly operations to reduce inventory and streamline production, allowing the company to quickly introduce new, innovative products into the market.

Manufacturers will have the opportunity to experience the QUICK TURN NEXUS and ORBITEC machines first hand, along with over 30 other models of new machines at T3 – Tomorrow’s Technology Today, a Discover Mazak 2011 event. The largest event of its kind, T3 is scheduled for October 18-20 and 25-27, and will host large numbers of manufacturers from across North America.

In addition to featured machine technology, attendees will have the opportunity to tour Mazak’s manufacturing plant and learn about the latest in complementary technologies from Mazak’s VIP technology partners including Sandvik Coromant, Renishaw, Inc., Parlec, Seco Tools, LNS America and Royal Products. Live cutting demonstrations on all 30 machines will provide a broad spectrum of capability for manufacturers of different industries.

ABS Quality Evaluations (ABS QE) certifies

businesses of all types and sizes around

the globe to a variety of standards:

Rockwell Collins Turns Today Into Tomorrow

Rockwell Collins VP of Sales and Marketing for commercial systems Colin Mahoney took the floor during a media conference at NBAA 2011 in Las Vegas to emphasize “exponential growth in electronics technology” and Rockwell’s most recent steps to stay ahead of the power curve.

Among those steps is one aimed at bringing the capabilities of Pro Line Fusion avionics to turboprops and light jets. “Previously, advanced functionality such as synthetic vision on head-up displays and auto-mated weather radar were available only for larger aircraft,” said Greg Irmen, v-p and general manage of business and regional systems. “Pro Line Fusion now brings these capabilities and more to the entire range of business aircraft–from turboprops to intercontinental business jets.”

Rockwell Collins also announced that its Pro Line Fusion inte-grated avionics displays are now available as a retrofit display option from Hawker Beechcraft’s Global Customer Support for Pro Line 21-equipped King Airs.

The Pro Line Fusion retrofit for the King Air features what Rockwell Collins claims is the industry’s first touchscreen flight displays, allow-ing gesture-based flight management to keep the pilot’s head up and eyes forward for greater situational awareness and enhanced safety throughout the flight.

Another new feature is “autonomous backup with one-touch emer-gency control.” According to Mahoney, it is the first-ever, one-touch emergency mode for business aircraft, affording disoriented pilots extra time to recover by putting the aircraft into a safe-altitude hold-ing pattern with the push of a single button. It also provides guidance cues to the nearest airport during an engine-loss event.

The first application of Pro Line Fusion in the light business aircraft market should be certified by the end of 2013, and this system will be available for new aircraft and for retrofit in Part 23 jets and turboprops. Rockwell Collins will also offer its new lightweight HGS-3500 head-up guidance system for the light jet and turboprops market, once it is certified in 2014 or 15.

For its Venue cabin management system, Rockwell Collins announced a series of innovative features, including a family of intuitive, touch-screen, high-definition monitors and cabin controls, a touch-enabled version of its Airshow moving map and simultaneous audio/video on demand (AVOD).

Finally, Rockwell Collins’s new Ascend aircraft information man-ager (AIM) has now been certified. AIM gives operators of aircraft equipped with Pro Line 4 or Pro Line 21 avionics the ability to securely, automatically and wirelessly transfer data–including database updates and maintenance information–to and from the aircraft. The first in-stallation was done by StandardAero and certified on a Falcon 50EX.The hardware installation included the Rockwell Collins IMS-3500 information management server and DBU-5010E database unit.

A2Z METALWORKER • 34 • Oct/Nov 2011

Page 35: Pacific NW A2Z Metalworker OCT/NOV Edition

Through the Ascend service, these systems create a wireless link between the aircraft and ground stations around the world to automatically transfer information to and from the Ascend Data Center.

Taking it a bit further, Rockwell Col-lins has also unveiled a new mobile app and flight operations dashboard for Ascend. It allows operators global access to “the only complete, fully integrated information management solutions that seamlessly streamlines all aspects of flight operations, from preflight scheduling to flight planning to closeouts,” according to the company.

Rockwell Collins’ Pro Line Fusion® avionics system and Primary Flight Control Computer (PFCC) have been selected for the Bombardier* Global 7000* and Global 8000* aircraft, both of which feature the Global Vision* flight deck.

“This announcement is a testament to how the industry-leading capabilities and flexibility of Pro Line Fusion make it the right solution for a wide range of platforms, including the highest level of business aircraft,” said Greg Irmen, vice president and general manager, for Rockwell Collins.

The Pro Line Fusion configuration selected by Bombardier for the Global 7000 and Global 8000 business jets in-cludes the following standard features:

An empowering, eyes-forward human interface featuring the first and only synthetic vision on the head-up display, as well as enhanced vision;

Four high-resolution 15-inch diagonal LCD displays, the largest head-down displays available in the industry, that work in concert with Rockwell Col-lins’ HGS-6000 Head-Up Guidance Systems (HGS®);

Rockwell Collins’ award-winning MultiScan™ Threat Detection System, which provides optimal, clutter-free weather information that reduces pilot workload and enhances safety and passenger comfort by minimizing unexpected turbulence encounters;

User-friendly graphical flight planning capability and dual Integrated Flight Information Systems (IFIS) with electronic charts and enhanced maps that reduce pilot workload;

The latest technologies to accommodate future airspace require-ments, including Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) and Future Air Navigation System Controller-Pilot Data Link Communication (FANS CPDLC); triple Advanced Flight Management Systems with Wide Area Augmentation System Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (WAAS/LPV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) capabilities; and a Traffic Surveillance System with Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) capabilities.

The Rockwell Collins PFCC is a core component of the fly-by-wire system featured on the Global 7000 and Global 8000 business jets. It commands the aircraft during flight via elec-tronic signal to the aircraft control surface actuators rather than traditional mechanical means. This allows for the introduction of a range of computer controlled enhancements to benefit the pilot, passenger and operator.

Boeing Marks 20th An-niversary of C-17 Globe-master III’s 1st Flight The Boeing Company recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the first flight of the C-17 airlifter. On Sept. 15, 1991, test aircraft T-1 took off from the Boeing Long Beach site on a two-hour flight that proved the engineering and design concepts of the aircraft and marked the beginning of the program.

“The first flight of T-1 ushered in a new era in military and hu-manitarian airlift,” said Bob Ciesla, C-17 program manager for Boe-ing. “Twenty years ago, when I was working in flight test for this new airlift program, I could not anticipate just how critical the C-17 would become for the U.S. Air Force and its allies. The suc-cess of the C-17 Globemaster III program extends beyond Boeing’s employees and supplier partners

-- who have proudly engineered and built the world’s greatest airlifter for two decades -- to exceed the expectations of customers around the globe who fly the jet every day.”

The C-17 has flown more than 2 million hours in its 20-year his-tory, supporting worldwide airlift missions that transport troops and supplies to global hot zones and bring aid to those in need during humanitarian crises.

“There is no question that the C-17 has set the bar high,” said Ciesla. “The program has performed on cost and on schedule for more than a decade. Now we are entering a new stage with a production-rate reduction from 15 to 10 aircraft per year, extending the life of the

C-17 line to 2014 and beyond.”

The C-17 aircraft has achieved a number of record-breaking milestones -- more than any other airlifter in history -- and set 33 world records during initial flight testing. The C-17’s records include payload to altitude and time-to-climb, as well as a record for short-takeoff-and-landing in which the C-17 took off in less than 1,400 feet, carried a payload of 44,000 pounds to altitude, and landed in less than 1,400 feet.

During the past 20 years, Boeing has delivered 235 C-17s -- 211 to the U.S. Air Force, including active duty, Guard and Reserve units, and 24 to international customers including the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, Qatar Emiri Air Force, United Arab Emirates Air Force and Air Defence, and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partner-ship for Peace nations. India became the newest C-17 customer in June, when India’s Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with the U.S. government to acquire 10 C-17s that will be delivered in 2013-2014.

Cisco Helps Businesses Improve

With the rapidly increasing number of Internet-based applications, Cisco is focusing on helping its customers deliver more Web-based software applications and rich media content across networks at scale and with high quality to any user and device. To achieve this goal, the company today introduced the next generation of its Wide Area Ap-plication Services (WAAS) appliances - the Cisco family of WAN (wide area network) optimization solutions.

The new Cisco WAASappliances help customers improve application performance for bandwidth-heavy applications such as virtual desk-tops, cloud services, video and mobile devices at branch locations. The new appliances also help organizations substantially improve the user experience across their entire network infrastructure by providing up to five times the bandwidth and supporting up to three times the users than the previous generation.

As an example of the greater scalability of Cisco’s new WAN optimiza-tion line, a single new appliance can allow an organization of 150,000 employees to simultaneously use virtual desktops over Apple iPad or other tablets, while delivering the highest possible user experience to each one. A WAAS appliance can also reduce the time it takes to download a typical PowerPoint presentation to any tablet of any user in any branch office from 30 seconds to only one second, and also has the ability to simultaneously stream 400 high-definition videos to 150,000 employee devices.

These second-generation WAN optimization solutions improve IT ef-ficiency and cut total cost of ownership by lowering an organization’s bandwidth usage and reducing the amount of hardware previously required by 66 percent. They offer a consistent, flexible deployment model that avoids network redesigns and provides IT managers with greater visibility to optimize network resources and ensure a consistent end-user experience.

Cisco and Citrix Form Strategic Alliance to Deliver Rich-Media-Enabled Virtual Desktops

Cisco and Citrix Systems announced that they have entered into a strategic alliance to develop and deliver solutions that help custom-ers simplify and accelerate large-scale desktop virtualization deploy-ments. Through this alliance, Cisco and Citrix will drive innovations that simplify the deployment of high-definition virtual desktops and applications and improve end-user experiences over a highly secure Citrix HDX™-enabled Cisco® network. The companies will also continue to enhance and build upon their data center solutions and cloud technologies to help accelerate deployment of cloud services. As the industry transitions from the PC era to the cloud era where mobile work forces need to access media-rich applications from any device, anywhere, anytime, enterprises are turning to desktop virtu-alization to give them the benefits of the security, flexibility and cost-savings by delivering desktops and applications as a centralized service.
