The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act of

2010 extends the temporary increase in Section 179 limitations on

expensing of depreciable business assets. Under HIRE, qualifying

businesses can continue to expense up to $250,000 of Section

179 property for the 2010 tax year.*

This tax break is set to expire January 1, 2011. While an extension

into 2011 has been proposed, nothing is certain at this time.

Ann Duignan, an analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co., said that “there’s ‘no evidence’ of a collapse in North American manufacturing as shipments still are growing.” Well this is certainly good to hear! I think we all, to some level, know that our economy is improving, but it is difficult to feel overly optimistic, given what we’ve been through over the past couple of years.

Manufacturing is coming back to the United States! In this issue, Caterpillar announces that they are bringing some of their manufacturing back from overseas. One of our

feature articles, Liberty Safes, based in Payson, Utah, brought their manufacturing back from China to the United States. And as I continue to travel through the 11 states that our magazines go to, I hear so much positive news. Banner years, new equipment purchases, companies investing in ISO9001:AS9100 certification, and doing all the right things to stay competitive in our global environment.

It’s the last issue of the year for our Rocky Mountain edition. 2012 will mark our 5th year in this region, our 18th year in the Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada region, and our 2nd year with the newest publication, our Pacific Northwest edition. All of our publications are online now, and we welcome your feedback and recommendations. Help us make the A2Z Metalworker magazines better, more relevant, and an ongoing tool for your businesses.

Machine shops who are reviewing their financials, and the health of their company, will be taking advantage of the Section 179 deduction, which is even improved for 2011 as a result of the Stimulus Act.

• Section 179 limits were increased - allowing businesses to write-off up to $500,000 of qualified capital expenditures subject to a dollar-for-dollar phase-out once these expenditures exceed $2 million. • Bonus Depreciation was also increased to 100% by the ‘Tax Relief Act of 2010’

- allowing businesses that exceed the $2 million cap to write-off 100% of qualified assets using first year Bonus Depreciation. Also, small businesses that are not profitable in 2011 can use 100% Bonus Depreciation (on new equipment only) and carry-forward the loss to future profitable years.

I encourage you to move quickly on acquiring needed machine tools and software before year-end.

On another note, this is, for many, the most exciting time of the year. Snow in our Rocky Mountain region, and cooler weather here in Arizona. I’d like to share a holiday quote with you, and wish you a joyous holiday with friends and loved ones.

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”

Calvin Coolidge

Until next issue, I wish you happy holidays, and God Bless our Troops!

Caterpillar.To. Shift.Some.Manufacturing.To.North.AmericaThe AP reported, “Caterpillar Inc. said recently that it plans to move some of its manufacturing from Japan to North America, a move that it says will put it closer to its many customers in North America and Europe.”

The plant will be Caterpillar’s ‘global source’ for small track-type tractors and make mini-hydraulic excavators for the Americas, the company said in a statement. “The plant will also export partially assembled mini excavators to Europe, where they’ll be completed and sold.”Mary Bell, CaterpillarVP said, “The markets for smaller track-type tractors and mini hydraulic excavators have evolved significantly in the past 30 years, with the majority of customers now located in North America and Europe.”

Boeing . Says . 777.Order s . May . Se t.Annual.Record

Boeing Co.’s 777, its most profitable jet, may bring in record orders this year as airlines seek more fuel-efficient long-haul planes and Airbus SAS extends development of its A350, an executive for the U.S. company said. With 132 of the planes ordered in this year’s first 10 months, the 777 has “a good chance” of beating its 2005 peak of 154. Boeing is boosting output of the 777 by 19 percent during the next 1 1/2 years, to 8.3 a month, largely by streamlining production processes. The company will keep driving those efficiencies to create more capacity, Loftis said. A350-1000.

BAE.may.gain.$100.million.in.work.from.Army.space.contract.delay

The U.S. Army’s decision to extend without competition its contract with BAE Systems for space and missile defense research may give the company access to more than $100 million in new orders.

BAE was picked in 2006 to provide services to the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command under a contract that was scheduled to expire Sept. 30, when BAE would have had to defend its position against rivals. Instead, the Army decided to wrap the work into a multibillion-dollar program it is planning, known as D3I, and extend BAE’s contract for as long as two years in the interim, with a cap of $561 million.

US.Trade.Deficit.Falls.To.$43.1.BillionBloomberg News reports, “The US trade deficit unexpectedly narrowed in September on record exports and jobless claims fell to a seven-month low, indicating the world’s largest economy may be poised to strengthen. The trade shortfall shrank 4 percent to $43.1 billion from a revised $44.9 billion in August.

Boeing.Wants.To.Offer.RFID.As.Factory.Standard

Aviation Daily reported, “Boeing, now formally offering radio-frequency identification (RFID) to keep parts records on aircraft already in service, is looking at introducing the technology as factory standard on commercial and military aircraft.” Program Manager Phil Coop said the FAA could certify the move this year.

Because of issues developing the system, “Airbus’s A350XWB will be the first commercial aircraft delivered to customers with parts carrying electronic records of their own service histories.

Boeing and Airbus are cooperating to adopt common standards and thereby minimize airline costs.”

Colorado.Leads.Nation.in.Solar.Jobs

The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit solar education/research organization, recently released its 2nd annual review of the solar workforce in the United States. The report, “National Solar Jobs Census 2011: A Review of the U.S. Solar Workforce” found that hiring in the solar workforce is on the rise. More than 100,000 Americans are now employed in the solar industry, with more than 6,100 of those jobs in Colorado.

“The solar industry has grown into a major economic force with more than 100,000 employees,” said Andrea Luecke, executive director of The Solar Foundation. “We expect even greater growth in the foreseeable future. But policymakers, workforce training providers, and the industry must work together to continue creating good jobs for skilled workers.” As of August 2011, the National Solar Jobs Census 2011 identified an estimated 1,020 solar businesses and 6,186 solar jobs in Colorado. That makes Colorado the #1 state in the nation in solar jobs per capita and the #2 state in solar jobs overall.

“Colorado is a national leader in solar innovation and job creation,” said Neal Lurie, Executive Director of the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association. “From GE’s new solar manufacturing plant to Dow Solar’s innovative new solar shingles, the technology of tomorrow is generating jobs today. Colorado’s entrepreneurial climate, commitment to clean energy, and growing customer demand have developed solar into a powerful economic driver.”

The number of solar workers -- defined as those workers who spend at least 50% of their time supporting solar-related activities

-- increased in Colorado by 16% over the previous year. Solar job growth in Colorado is more than 20 times faster than job growth for the overall U.S. economy. In fact, Colorado’s more than 6,100 solar jobs now exceed the number of mining jobs, estimated at about 5,000 by the Colorado Mining Association.

While Colorado is ranked #1 in solar employment on a per capita basis, the top 10 states for total number of solar jobs are California, Colorado, Arizona, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Texas, Oregon, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Colorado, Arizona, Florida, Oregon, New Jersey and Massachusetts showed the strongest growth rates from August 2010.

Nationally, the Census identified an estimated 17,198 solar employment sites and 100,237 solar jobs in all 50 states. The National Solar Jobs Census 2011 also found that solar employers expect to increase the number of solar workers by 24 percent, representing nearly 24,000 net new jobs by August 2012. Over the next 12 months, nearly half of solar firms expect to add jobs. “These survey responses merely reflect employers’ best estimates at expected new hiring, but it demonstrates a clear growth pattern for the industry and tremendous optimism by employers in the industry,” said Luecke. “Employers expressed similar optimism last year, but failed to meet their hiring expectations because of stalled legislative initiatives and continued policy uncertainty.”

Pratt. Sees. Future. For.Larger.GTF.Engines

Pratt & Whitney’s belief in geared turbofans as the way of the future is growing as the engine maker works with Airbus to re-engine the A320 family and begins discussions on widebody applications with both the European airframer and Boeing.Detail design of the PW1100G installation on the A320NEO is showing an unexpected advantage stemming from the size of the geared turbofan’s (GTF) low-pressure turbine (LPT), which is smaller than in a conventional turbofan.

“One of the big advantages is the very small low-pressure turbine,” says Alan Epstein, VP-technology and environment. “For re-engining, one of the biggest benefits is they can fit a bigger GTF than a turbofan.” A bigger fan increases propulsive efficiency and reduces fuel consumption.

A smaller LPT allows the engine to nestle closer to the wing. “The smaller turbine

allows a bigger fan up front,” he says. “The A320NEO has an 81-in. fan. Three years ago, any fan bigger than the mid-70s was considered humongous.”

Epstein says the core will get smaller still, and the fan larger, in future generations of GTF as fan pressure-ratio is pushed lower and engine bypass-ratio higher to further reduce fuel consumption and noise.

Although, in studies, Pratt has been able to fit GTFs with up to 94-in. fans under the wings of conventional narrowbody configurations, “at some point there is a challenge with really big sizes,” he says. The alternative is to shrink the core.

“There will be bigger and bigger GTFs, or engines with the same thrust but bigger fans and shorter cores,” Epstein says. “We are looking a 2025 time frame, 30,000-lb.-thrust narrowbody engines with cores the same size as Pratt & Whitney Canada turboprops.”

Shrinking the core is leading Pratt to look at centrifugal compressors, which are more compact than axial designs. “Pratt Canada uses axi-centrifugal, but to Pratt they are anathema. But with the core getting so small, why not use them?”

Pratt, meanwhile, is “actively looking at widebody applications” of the GTF with Airbus and Boeing, Epstein says. “The gear scales better as it gets bigger, the small-core issue goes away and the performance gets better,” he says.

Widebody GTF discussions center on “A380-size engines,” Epstein says. “We are trying to talk four engines, not two. [Airbus and Boeing] started out extremely skeptical; now they are just skeptical.” The issue is price, he says, but Pratt argues it can sell four for the price of two larger engines.

TODD Machinery Partners with Methods Machine Tools

Howard Olson calls it Karma. It was just meant to be. When Howard flew to Las Vegas to attend imX this past September, he went for a very specific reason. His plan was to meet the Methods manage-ment team. Once he met them, his goal was to impress them with Todd Machin-ery’s ability, and to convince them that his company should carry the Methods line of products in Utah.

It worked, and the deal took less than 6 weeks to complete. Today, Todd Machin-ery is the exclusive dealer throughout Utah of Methods Machine Tool’s fine line of machine tools, which includes Matsu-ura machining centers, Nakamura-Tome multi-tasking turning centers, Fanuc RoboDrill machine centers, the KIWA and Feeler lines, plus dozens of other lead suppliers for Automation, tooling, fixtures, and quality control.

Howard says, “The philosophy at Todd Machinery was always, and continues to be, to carry the very best line of

machine tools in the industry. The lines that Methods Machine Tools carries were the perfect addition to our existing product line.” Both Methods and Todd Machinery have a long history of success - more than 50 years for each entity. And both share a philosophy of extensively utilizing engi-neers to support their customers -- the two companies don’t simply offer sales

- they provide design assistance, service, sales and support throughout the life of the machine tools they sell.

Both additionally offer large showrooms for their customers to come to see and learn about their products. Today, Meth-ods has Regional Technical Centers in Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachu-setts (where they are headquartered), Michigan, and North Carolina. They also work with distributors throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Howard says, “Methods isn’t just a ma-chine tool sales organization. They have

a national staff of engineers who actually create specifications and design solutions for innovative metalworking products. They also work with their machine tool manufacturing partners worldwide to turn those ideas into reality.”

Chris Porter, General Manager for Methods Machine Tools West, says, “Utah has always been an excellent market for manufacturing, as they have ex-cellent engineering and manu-facturing programs at the State universities and community colleges. This highly educated pool of engineers and qualified workforce provides incentive for companies to locate and grow their manufacturing op-erations there. Todd Machin-ery’s modern facility allows us to display and demonstrate our products locally, a first for Methods Machine Tools Inc. in

this market.”

He continued, “Both businesses share the same philosophy of providing com-prehensive, engineered manufacturing solutions, and supporting those solutions with enhanced service support after the sale. In the near future, we will leverage Todd Machinery’s service engineering resources to enhance our existing local service engineering efforts. This alliance is a perfect fit for both companies, and Howard and I are extremely excited about this new alliance”.

Todd Machinery, founded by Harry and Lois Todd, opened for business in 1951, and more than 4 decades later (1994), Howard Olson bought the company.

Howard, a degreed manufacturing en-gineer (Bachelors and Masters), moved up the ladder at the large entities he

worked for, from EIMCO Mining in Salt Lake City, to Rockford, IL to work for Fairbanks Morse Engine Division, as a manufacturing engineering manager, to Eclipse Inc., also in Illinois, and back to Salt Lake City to work for EIMCO, in the Process Equipment Division. How-ard achieved Vice President roles before leaving Corporate America. “I knew about Todd Machinery while I was in various engineering positions over the years, since I bought equipment from them. So when current owner Hugh Evans wanted to retire and sell Todd Machinery, I pur-chased the company.”

The company operated for over a decade in a 5000 square foot facility, and they offered their customers new and used machine tools, as well as repair and rebuild services. Howard brought on Bruce Fillmore, a fellow manufacturing

engineer and school colleague, about a decade ago. Howard says, “Since Bruce joined the company, he has been such an asset to our customers, particularly with his experience in programming, tooling, and process applications.” Today, Bruce and Howard share in the sales role for the Todd Machinery.

Howard recalls Todd’s early years of suc-cess, and says, “The Giddings and Lewis line was the pearl for Todd Machinery in the early years, and in fact we are the old-est dealer in the United States still carry-ing their line. They are a leading manufac-turer of industrial automation products and machine tools in the United States. With this line, Todd Machinery offers automated assembly systems, industrial measurement and control systems, program-mable industrial computers, high precision automated machine tools, and flexible inspection systems.

More than 5 years ago, Todd Machinery’s line expanded when MAG was founded. In 2005, MAG brought together

renowned brands from the US and Ger-man machine tool industry such as Cin-cinnati, Lamb, Cross Hüller, Ex-Cell-O, Giddings & Lewis, Hüller Hille, Fadal, Witzig & Frank, Hessapp and Boehringer to form a dominant, successfully operating global company.

In 2000, Todd Machinery was awarded the Hermle machine tool line. Hermle Ma-chine Company, a Germany entity, with North American operations in Franklin, Wisconsin, provides North America’s leading manufacturers with the finest high precision 5-axis machining centers.

Hermle’s machining centers are used for efficient machining of tools, molds and in series-produced parts. Due to their qual-ity and high precision, they are used in numerous production areas, including in particular highly demanding markets such as the medical technology, optical industry, aircraft and automotive industries, tool and mold making and their subcontractors. Howard says, “With the unique machine concept, the Hermle spans the line of individual milling jobs from single-part production to series manufacturing with up to 5 axes.”

In 2008, Todd Machinery expanded with a move to their new 12,500 facility in North Salt Lake. This was a major upgrade from their previous location, and Howard

says, “The move really allowed us to grow our machine rebuild, repair and retrofit business.”

“We support customers with service, re-gardless of where they initially purchased their machine or what brand of machine they need work done on”, Howard said. He continued, “We have some of the best talent in machine tool rebuilding. Don Laidlaw has been doing repairs for more than 30 years now. Not only is he a journeyman machinist, but he is also a master rebuilder. Don is the reason I bought this facility, and why our repair, retrofit and service business is so strong today. We also have Matt Hatch, who installed more than half the Fadals in this territory over the years. Matt is expert in machine tool controls.”

Todd Machinery’s services in-clude:

Hear From Todd Machinery’s Customers

“I’ve been buying from Todd Ma-chinery for 5 plus years. We’ve purchased some lathes and mills from them. What we use Todd Machinery extensively for, though, is machine repair and rebuilding. We have some very heavy indus-trial pieces of equipment, and Todd’s Don Laidlaw is outstand-ing and extremely knowledgeable. He’s done retrofits onsite as well as the Todd facility, including rebuilding our very complex gray planner mill. Todd Machinery’s service and sup-port is absolutely outstanding. We couldn’t find another company to do what they do in our area, and

priced as competitively as they are.”

Senior Buyer, Industrial Metals Manu-facturer

“We’ve purchased several pieces of equip-ment from Todd Machinery over the course of nearly a decade, including several Hermle and Cincinnati machines.

We also used Todd Machinery for service and machine rebuilds. We see Matt Hatch, their service guy, more than anyone else. You will not find such a tal-ented and knowledgeable service guy as Matt -- it’s just rare. Also, Don has done some complete machine rebuilds for us, including taking a very old surface grinder and completely restoring it to mint condition.

If Todd Machinery goes head to head with any machine tool dealer, they will come out priced better than their competition. I highly recommend Todd Machinery and their very talented team.”

Engineering Manager, Diesel Engine Manufacturer

“We’ve been purchasing from Todd Ma-chinery for more than 35 years now. We initially used them extensively because of the lines they carry exclusively in Utah.

In the last ten years, we’ve purchased a number of the high-end Hermle and entry level Fadal milling machines from Todd. They are exclusive on these lines. We use Todd Machinery for all of our servic-ing and maintenance on these machines, for the obvious reasons that they are qualified, and we retain our warranty with an authorized dealer.

Todd Machinery does more than just sell and service us the Hermle and Fadal machines. We use them for repair, maintenance and retrofit on any of the machines that they can service.

As I look at all of the machines we have purchased from machine tool dealers over the past more than 3 decades, Todd Machinery is #1 on our list. They are knowledgeable, their service is outstand-ing, and their pricing is very competitive.”

Purchasing Manager, Major Defense, Aerospace and Commercial Contractor

“We’ve worked with Todd Machinery since before Howard purchased the business. Over the years we’ve purchased a number of machine tools, including 10 Giddings & Lewis (G&L) vertical turning lathes that ranged from 36” to 168”.

Our oldest G&L dates back to 1974, so it’s nearly 40 years old! We’re always retrofitting our older machine tools, and Todd Machinery does most of this for us.

We continue to use Todd Machinery for new machine purchases, maintenance, repairs, and retrobuilds for a number of reasons:

1) Their prices are competitive and they are very knowledgeable. 2) Their machines and their customer support is outstanding.3) Howard and his team are excellent to work with, and since they are local, they come out almost immediately when we have a problem.”

New.Army.Office.To.Corral.Aircraft.Costs

The Army is aiming to corral costs across the service’s fixed-wing fleet and has tasked its new aviation program office to do just that.

The service’s new Fixed Wing Program Office will be the sole office in charge of buying and modernizing aircraft in the service’s 350-plane fleet, according to a service statement released recently.

Headed up by Col. Brian Tachias, the new office is the eighth program office under the Army’s Aviation directorate based at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. The new program office’s work will focus primarily on driving “cost avoidance and cost savings measures” into the fleet, he said.

Those measures will be key as the Army and the rest of the services continue to grapple with massive budget pressures coming from the White House and Capitol Hill.

Creation of the new program office “indicates [service leaders] recognize the magnitude of work required to acquire, field, sustain, and modernize the Army’s Fixed Wing fleet,” Tachias said.

The job of buying and maintaining Army aircraft was spread across various service commands since the 1980s. But that practice proved duplicative and extremely costly to the service.

Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli eventually consolidated

responsibility of all fixed-wing aircraft into the new office. That move was part of a massive service portfolio review conducted by the Army last year.

The new office is already heading up a large-scale effort to upgrade the service’s manned C-12 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft. Those upgrades include “the latest military communications, navigation, surveillance, and aircraft survivability equipment for worldwide deployability,” the statement says.

The Army is also in the midst of revamping its strategy for unmanned ISR aircraft with an eye toward cost savings.Along with upgrading the current fleet, the new office is working on a new fixed-wing utility aircraft for the Army. Service officials have been tasked to “initiate an exploration for a future utility aircraft,” according to the statement.

Boeing.Will. Increase.Use.Of. Capital.Finance.To.Market.Planes

Bloomberg News reported Boeing “plans to make more use of its capital finance arm to help sell aircraft to carriers, particularly in the US, where lining up capital has become tougher, the head of Boeing’s commercial planemaking unit said.” Boeing Commercial CEO Jim Albaugh, speaking at a news conference, “declined to say if Boeing has set aside specific amounts of capital to assist customers whose balance sheets may prove less attractive to commercial banks or other financiers.”

Lockheed.wins.$1.billion.UK.MoD.contract

U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin said it had won a 642 million pound ($1 billion) contract to upgrade Britain’s fleet of Warrior armored vehicles.

Lockheed Martin said, under the Warrior Capability Sustainment Program (WCSP), it would be responsible for upgrades and enhancements extending the vehicles’ service life to beyond 2040.

The total cost of the upgrade is around 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion) of which Lockheed Martin can expect to book about two-thirds with the remainder going to other contractors.

Only Lockheed was left in the running to carry out the work after British defense group BAE Systems was eliminated earlier this year by the Ministry of Defense.

Northrop.Grumman.wins.$124M.C-RAM.contract

Northrop Grumman has received a $124 million award to expand operations of Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar defense systems in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The $124 million contract comprises two portions: A $76 million first-year option of the task order for the Afghanistan operations issued under a contract from the Defense Information Systems Agency at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.; and $48 million for increased operations in Afghanistan and to provide personnel for

C-RAM sense-and-warn operations in Iraq.

The C-RAM Project Office is run through the PEO Missiles and Space at Redstone Arsenal, the Army’s centralized management agency for the material development of all Army tactical and air defense missile programs and selected Army space programs.

Since its initial fielding more than six years ago, the C-RAM system is credited with saving hundreds of lives through its ability to provide early warning of incoming indirect fire, Northrop said in a statement. Working closely with the Army, Northrop Grumman helped to take the C-RAM capability from concept to reality in less than 18 months.

C-RAM uses sensor, command and control (C2) and visualization tools to detect threatening objects and locate the sources of incoming fire. Once the threat is confirmed, its C2 system provides accurate warning to exposed soldiers and other personnel.

Researchers.Adapt.Classic.Antennas. to.Harness.More.Power.from.the.Sun

Profs. Koby Scheuer, Yael Hanin and Amir Boag of Tel Aviv University’s Department of Physical Electronics and its innovative new Renewable Energy Center are now developing a solar panel composed of nano-antennas instead of semiconductors. By adapting class ic metal l ic antennas to absorb light waves at optical frequencies, a much higher conversion rate from light into useable energy could be achieved. Such efficiency, combined with a lower material cost, would mean a cost-effective way to harvest and utilize “green” energy.

Page 27: Rocky Mountain A2Z Metalworker Magazine

A2Z METALWORKER • 27 • Nov/Dec 2011

The technology was recently presented at Photonics West in San Francisco and published in the conference proceedings.

Receiving and transmitting green energyBoth radio and optical waves are electromagnetic energy, Prof. Scheuer expla ins. When these waves are harvested, electrons are generated that can be converted into electric current. Traditionally, detectors based on semiconducting materials like silicon are used to interface with light, while radio waves are captured by antenna.

For optimal absorption, the antenna dimensions must correspond to the light’s very short wavelength -- a challenge in optical frequencies that plagued engineers in the past, but now we are able to fabricate antennas less than a micron in length. To test the efficacy of their antennas, Prof. Scheuer and his colleagues measured their ability to absorb and remit energy. “In order to function, an antenna must form a circuit, receiving and transmitting,” says Prof. Scheuer, who points to the example of a cell phone, whose small, hidden antenna both receives and transmits radio waves in order to complete a call or send a message.

By illuminating the antennas, the researchers were able to measure the antennas’ ability to re-emit radiation efficiently, and determine how much power is lost in the circuit -- a simple matter of measuring the wattage going in and coming back out. Initial tests indicate that 95 percent of the wattage going into the antenna comes out, meaning that only five percent is wasted.

According to Prof. Scheuer, these “old school” antennas also have greater potential for solar energy because they can collect wavelengths across a much broader spectrum of light. The solar spectrum is very broad, he explains, with UV or infrared rays ranging from ten microns to less than two hundred nanometers. No semiconductor can handle this broad a spectrum, and they absorb only a fraction of the available energy. A group of antennas, however, can be manufactured in different lengths with the same materials and process, exploiting the entire available spectrum of light.

When finished, the team’s new solar panels will be large sheets of plastic which, with the use of a nano-imprinting lithography machine, will be imprinted with varying lengths and shapes of metallic antennas.

Improving solar power’s bottom lineThe researchers have already constructed a model of a possible solar panel. The next step, says Prof. Scheuer, is to focus on the conversion process -- how electromagnetic energy becomes electric current, and how the process can be improved.

The goal is not only to improve the efficiency of solar panels, but also to make the technology a viable option in terms of cost. Silicon is a relatively inexpensive semiconductor, but in order to obtain sufficient power from antennas, you need a very large panel -- which becomes expensive.

Green energy sources need to be evaluated not only by what they can contribute environmentally, but also the return on every dollar invested, Prof. Scheuer notes. “Our antenna is based on metal -- aluminium and gold -- in very small quantities. It has the potential to be more efficient and less expensive.”

Proposed.Rules. For. Exports.Protect.Stealth

The Obama administration is proposing export control changes that would allow aircraft components to be more freely traded on the global market, while continuing to protect parts designed specifically for the military’s most stealthy aircraft.

The move would modify the U.S. Munitions List for what is known as “Category VIII,” which covers aircraft. The change would free up generic parts, components, accessories and attachments for export

“regardless of their significance to maintaining a military advantage for the United States.” Those parts would be transferred from the State Department-managed munitions list to a list governed by the Commerce Department.

But the proposed rule does exempt parts “specifically designed” for certain aircraft with stealth technology, including the B-1B bomber, the B-2, the F-15 Silent Eagle, the F/A-18 E/F/G, the F-22 Raptor, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the F-117 Nighthawk. The exemption also includes U.S. technology demonstrators.

The change is part of the Obama administration’s overarching export control strategy outlined in early 2010 by then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The initiative is led by the National Security Council with contributions from a team of about 150 people at the departments of commerce, defense and state in consultation with Congress, and includes a President’s Export Council.

The idea is to rid the munitions list of components and parts that have no special military design and move some items with military and civilian uses to a dual list governed by the Commerce Department that will still be monitored.

The proposal would provide welcome relief to the U.S. defense industry, according to Remy Nathan of the Aerospace Industries Association. Rather than focusing on an enormous number of nuts, bolts, screws and hoses that are currently regulated by International Trade in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the government could zero in on the more sensitive, more-important-to-regulate items, Nathan says.

And if the process has seemed, from the outside, to be laborious, that’s because each item needs to be sorted with care.

The current munitions list is open-ended. “It’s easy from that perspective to say everything’s on the ITAR unless we say it’s not,” Nathan says, which has put the onus on the manufacturer to make a case for exempting a certain part and bogged down State Department officials who had to sign off on paperwork for items that were destined for approval.

“You’re not changing ‘no’ to ‘yes,’” says Nathan. “It’s that the process of getting a ‘yes’ is easier, cheaper and faster.”For the next 45 days, the administration is collecting comments about the proposed rule. The administration previously published changes to the Category VII list for military vehicles, which is now being revised.

General.Dynamics.to.Acquire.Force.Protection.General Dynamics agreed to acquire Force Protection Inc. for about $360 million in cash as the defense giant looks to boost its armored-vehicle business.

Force Protection holders will receive $5.52 a share. The stock last traded above the offer price in February, and has slumped on the prospect of cuts in Pentagon spending.

Force Protection, which is based in Summerville, S.C., will become a part of General Dynamics Land Systems, which makes Abrams main battle tanks and Stryker infantry combat vehicles. Force Protection’s specialty vehicles are designed to protect from landmines, hostile fire and improvised explosive devices. General Dynamics’ land systems segment also makes combat vehicles.

General Dynamics has seen its profit improve as a buying spree continues to strengthen its information-technology business, the biggest top-line contributor. The deal, which has been approved by both boards, is expected to be completed by year end and will add to General Dynamics’ earnings in 2012.

US.Lockheed.Martin.Sees.Mideast.Air.Defense.Sales.Rising.

Increased nervousness in the Middle East about Iran’s nuclear program is driving sales of air defense equipment to wealthy Gulf Arab countries, a senior executive of U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. said.

Cash-rich Gulf countries, who have enjoyed triple digit oil prices for most of this year, are taking

precautions to protect themselves from a “perceived threat” from Iran by bulking up their air missile defense capabilities at a time of global economic turbulence, Joe Garland, vice president told Zawya Dow Jones in an interview at the Dubai Air Show.

Lockheed’s sales outside of the U.S. in 2010 totaled around $7 billion, of which 30% were in the Middle East.

Regional tensions have risen recently due to an International Atomic Energy Agency report that accused Iran of pursuing a nuclear weapons program, and claims that Iran was behind an alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington.

Bloomberg News repor ted, “ M a c h i n e r y s t o c k s m a y outperform the market through the end of the year as new orders rebound, helping to defy concerns about another US recession.” US “manufacturers booked $32.6 billion in new orders for machinery equipment in September, the most since July 2008, according to data from the Census Bureau released last month.

T h e S t a n d a r d & Po o r ’s Supercomposite Machinery Index, which includes Caterpillar Inc. and Deere & Co. , has gained 26 percent since Oct. 3, while the S&P 500 has risen 13 percent.” Ann Duignan, an analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co., said that “there’s ‘no evidence’ of a collapse in North American manufacturing as shipments still are growing.”

NASA.Launching.Twin.Moon.Probes. to.Measure.Gravity

Four decades after landing men on the moon, NASA is returning to Earth’s orbiting companion, this time with a set of robotic twins that will measure lunar gravity while chasing one another in circles.

By creating the most precise lunar gravity map ever, scientists hope to figure out what’s beneath the lunar surface, all the way to the core. The orbiting probes also will help pinpoint the best landing sites for future explorers, whether human or mechanical.

Near-identical twins Grail-A and Grail-B — short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory — are due to blast off aboard an unmanned rocket. Although launched together, the two washing machine-size spacecraft will separate an hour into the flight and travel independently to the moon.

It will be a long, roundabout trip — three to four months — because of the small Delta II rocket used to boost the spacecraft. NASA’s Apollo astronauts used the mighty Saturn V rocket, which covered the approxi-mately 240,000 miles to the moon in a mere three days.

Ball.Aerospace-Built. NPP. Satellite.Launched.Successfully

NASA’s NPP satellite built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. was successfully launched into a sun-synchronous polar orbit tlast month.

NASA’s first Earth-observing satellite to measure both global climate and key weather data lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base aboard a Delta II rocket. NPP’s five science instruments will make critical measurements to provide long-term climate projections and data

to improve short-term weather forecasts.

Ball Aerospace built the BCP 2000 satellite bus for Goddard Space Flight Center under fixed-price terms. Ball also built one of the five sensors aboard NPP - the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite – an instrument that will measure how much ozone is in our atmosphere and how the ozone concentration varies with altitude.

JPSS-1 is the Joint Polar-Orbiting Satellite System scheduled to launch no earlier than 2017. JPSS data and imagery will further increase timeliness, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness of public warnings and forecasts of climate and weather events.

NPP has a five-year mission life and a seven-year design life. The spacecraft bus is the eighth spacecraft built by Ball Aerospace on the same BCP core architecture. In all, this architecture has more than 50 years of successful on-orbit operations.

Moog.Celebrates.First.Delivery.of.Boeing.747-8.Freighter.to.Cargolux

The Boeing Company delivered the first 747-8 Freighter to launch customer Cargolux at Boeing’s Paine Field in Everett, WA. Cargolux flew the plane away in the morning and put the plane immediately into revenue service.

For nearly 30 years Moog has been a major supplier of flight control actuators to Boeing for their commercial aircraft product line. On the 747-8, Boeing selected Moog to provide the Lateral Control Electronics for the fly-by-wire ailerons and spoilers on the aircraft’s new aerodynamic wing. While Moog has supplied flight control computers and flight critical software to other airplane manufacturers as part of an actuation system, this was the first time Moog provided this capability to Boeing for a commercial transport.

The Lateral Control Electronics feature a dual triplex dissimilar architecture. It hosts the flight control laws for the fly-by-wire wing and includes a number of enhanced features to improve flight performance, extend aircraft structural life and provide improved fault tolerance.

Do you remember when thongs were flip flops? Oh, alas to those of us who have more than a few decades under our belts!

My daughter was at work recently, and one of her colleagues, (I assume a little older) told a number of the employees in the break room that the thong she was wearing got caught on her rug, and she tripped! All of the employees, young of course, wondered how a scanty pair of underwear that you are wearing could conceivably get caught in a rug!

We are stepping up our involvement in Facebook and LinkedIn, with Twitter coming next, as it is what we must do to evolve the Metalworker publications. I am not ashamed to note that I cause some

chuckles from my kids and their friends. When my son was leaving for his 28 hour drive back to school in Nashville, I sent a Facebook message, “Be safe on your trip! LOL”. What I meant was “Lots of Love”, but apparently, LOL means “Laugh Out Loud”. Surely, I wasn’t laughing out loud when I was telling Alex to be safe in his driving!

When my daughter came for dinner with a girlfriend recently, I asked how their night out had been, and had they hooked up with any guys? They laughed hysterically, and Alyssa’s friend wondered how her mother could be so progressive and cavalier in her attitude? Of course, I meant, did they meet up with any guys.

So, I’m getting older (aren’t we all?), and I will need some outside expertise in bringing our magazines fully into the social media world. Still, we’re making progress, and I am delighted to let you know that my colleague, Kim Carpenter, has upgraded our website so that all magazines are fully online. Our online hits are growing exponentially with our fully online presence!

On a serious note, there isn’t anybody in the United States who isn’t concerned about the announcement by Standard & Poor’s to downgrade the credit rating of the U.S. government. The decision will make it more expensive for the country to borrow money, adding to the national debt, and the announcement has thrown the stock market into a serious tizzy.

But here’s a surprise I read about: For some consumers, the credit downgrade could actually be good news. People who save money, whether in the form of savings accounts, CD’s or Treasury bonds, could actually benefit. When S&P announced it would downgrade the American government’s creditworthiness from AAA to AA+, it means the government will have to pay higher interest to investors buying Treasury bonds (since there’s a slightly higher risk that those investors won’t get repaid).

In addition, banks borrow money from the Federal Reserve, and the lower credit rating will make that money more expensive to borrow. Meanwhile, banks will be forced to pay consumers somewhat higher interest rates on CD’s and savings accounts, because now those same consumers could earn more money buying Treasury bonds, so banks must raise their rates to compete.

All of that adds up to the silver lining of this story: If you have money saved up, or invested in super-stable things like CD’s and Treasury bonds, you probably will win out, in the form of slightly higher interest rates.

In this issue, you will read a number of really good articles on solar and alternative energy in this issue. I think you will also find the articles on machine shops in this issue particularly interesting. It is so refreshing to meet such dynamic companies who are continuing to succeed! Additionally, a number of machine tool dealers are hosting Open Houses, announced in this issue. You just may want to attend to learn about some of the newest in machine tool technology!

I wish you continued health and happiness through the year, and God Bless our Troops.

Do you rem

decades under our belts!

My daughter w

ber of the employees in the break room

that the thong she w

as wearing got caught on her rug, and she tripped!

All of the em

ployees, young of course, wondered how

a scanty pair of underw

ear that you are wearing could conceivably get caught in a rug!

We are stepping up our involvem

ent in Facebook and LinkedIn, w

ith Twitter com

ing next, as it is what w

e must do to evolve the

Metalw

orker publications. I am not asham

ed to note that I cause some

chuckles from m

y kids and their friends. When m

y son was leaving for his 28 hour drive back to school

in Nashville, I sent a Facebook m

essage, “Be safe on your trip! LOL”. W

hat I meant w

as “Lots of Love”, but apparently, LO

L means “Laugh O

ut Loud”. Surely, I wasn’t laughing out loud w

hen I was telling

Alex to be safe in his driving!

When m

y daughter came for dinner w

ith a girlfriend recently, I asked how their night out had been,

and had they hooked up with any guys? They laughed hysterically, and A

lyssa’s friend wondered how

her m

other could be so progressive and cavalier in her attitude? Of course, I m

eant, did they meet up

with any guys.

So, I’m getting older (aren’t w

e all?), and I will need som

e outside expertise in bringing our m

agazines fully into the social media w

orld. Still, we’re m

aking progress, and I am delighted to let you

know that m

y colleague, Kim

Carpenter, has upgraded our w

ebsite so that all magazines are fully online.

Our online hits are grow

ing exponentially with our fully online presence!

On a serious note, there isn’t anybody in the U

nited States who isn’t concerned about the

announcement by Standard &

Poor’s to downgrade the credit rating of the U

.S. government. The decision

will m

ake it more expensive for the country to borrow

money, adding to the national debt, and the

announcement has throw

n the stock market into a serious tizzy.

But here’s a surprise I read about: For some consum

ers, the credit downgrade could actually be good

news. People w

ho save money, w

hether in the form of savings accounts, C

D’s or Treasury bonds, could

actually benefit. When S&

P announced it would dow

ngrade the American governm

ent’s creditworthiness

from A

AA

to AA

+, it m

eans the government w

ill have to pay higher interest to investors buying Treasury bonds (since there’s a slightly higher risk that those investors w

on’t get repaid).

In addition, banks borrow m

oney from the Federal R

eserve, and the lower credit rating w

ill make

that money m

ore expensive to borrow. Meanw

hile, banks will be forced to pay consum

ers somew

hat higher interest rates on C

D’s and savings accounts, because now

those same consum

ers could earn more

money buying Treasury bonds, so banks m

ust raise their rates to compete.

All of that adds up to the silver lining of this story: If you have m

oney saved up, or invested in super-stable things like C

D’s and Treasury bonds, you probably w

ill win out, in the form

of slightly higher interest rates.

A2Z METALWORKER • 34 •Nov/Dec 2011

More than a third of a century old. Precision Tech was formed more than 35 years ago by two young brothers, Tom at the age of 25 and Terry, just 20 years young. In fact, Terry says, “My father had to co-sign our business license and loan because legally you had to be at least 21 years of age for signature authority.”

Though the 2 Van Otten’s were, by all measures, far too young to open a business, they were experienced beyond their years in the trade. Before they were even old enough to work, the 2 helped their father in the repair of the heavy equipment he sold. Both had completed their education at a local technical college, learning the ins and outs of machining, welding and fabrication, and both spent their post education years working at job shops. In fact, machining was a sport for the 2, and they achieved National champion status in the Vocational/Industrial Club of America (VICA). The main purposes of VICA’s contests are to document students’ skill mastery, encourage excellence, and increase the competence of entry-level workers. Tom and Terry excelled in VICA.

“We borrowed $5000 to open our business”, Tom said, “and we repaid our debt in less than a year.”

Precision Tech continues to thrive after more than 35 years, largely because, the two brothers and partners say, “We’ve continually morphed our business.” Tom continued, “Precision Tech opened as strictly a repair business, supporting customers in the mining, construction, and farming industries. We didn’t make new parts in our early years.” Aside from evolving its business model, it is clear that Precision Tech excels because of their experienced team, who on average have more than 25 years of experience. “One of the genius machinists we are proud to have on our team is our brother Kelly”, Tom said. Terry continued,

“Our loyal employees are more family members than employees.”

As the company evolved, Precision Tech was renowned for its certified welding, grinding (ID/OD and surface), honing and manual machining capabilities. Because the brothers and their team are nearly all journeymen machinists, customers came to Precision Tech for their ability to support them with reverse engineering and design support. “We used to outsource all of our CNC machining to outside machine shops”, Terry said.

There was one particular machine shop that performed exceptionally well for Precision Tech, and in fact, Precision Tech was its largest customer. That company was Swenson Machine Works, founded and operated by Rick Swenson. “We wanted to bring all critical functions in-house”, Terry said, “so that the final product we deliver to our customers is totally within our control in both quality

New Machinery, New Outstanding FacilityBut The Same Superior Team

and schedule. We acquired Swenson Machine Works, brought Rick and his team into the Precision Tech team, and with the acquisition came a Mazak QTN250-MY turn/mill lathe and a Mazak AJV-18 vertical machining center.”

“We’ve always been known for making some of the most complex parts for our customers, but we’ve evolved into manufacturing complete assemblies today for some of the largest customers across such industries as medical, mining, nuclear , and construction industries, and as an example, the hydraulic cylinders we design and manufacture range from 2 to 36 inches”, Terry said.

The Precision Tech team had no previous experience with the Mazak machine tool line, Tom said, but Rick and his employees were believers in it. The transition to the Mazak machine tools went so well that Precision Tech traded in one of their non-Mazak lathes, and upgraded to another QTN-250MSY Mazak lathe with a barfeed, and they also added a Mazak multi-tasking mill/turn center, a 5-axis Integrex i-200S.

Today, the company owns 4 Mazak machines, and they have no need to outsource their CNC machining to any other machine shops.

Business in 2011 will exceed all prior years, Terry said. When asked what they attributed their doubling of sales over the previous year, Tom and Terry agreed it was a combination of factors:

1) The new Mazak machines, which have allowed the company to bring on new customers, but more dramatically increased the number of products they are making for their long term customers. 2) Increased control of all of the processes required to make parts and complete assemblies for their customers. 3) The move to their new state of the art facility that looks more like a Fortune 100 office complex than a machine shop. “We more than doubled our capacity with this land and building purchase”, Tom said, “from 10,000 square feet to 22,800 square feet.” While Tom and Terry can’t put a specific dollar amount that resulted from their move to their new facility, both agreed that any customer who tours their facility notes that they haven’t seen a machine shop as clean and aesthetically pleasing as Precision Tech’s.

When asked about their experience with the Mazak machine tools, and their relationship with Smith Machinery, distributor of Mazak in Utah, Idaho, and Montana, Tom says, “Our relationship with Smith Machinery is strong and growing. They do what they say they will do, and their support is everything we expect from our machine tool suppliers.”

Terry continued, “You learn the value of a supplier when a problem comes up. That is the true acid test. We had a few initial issues with our machine tool purchase, and Smith Machinery was there to fix it for us. Our latest Mazak machine tool purchase was installed in one day, and up and running in under 2 days!”

Terry recently visited the Mazak US factory in Florence, Kentucky. “I was so impressed with their operations and their products”, he said. Tom added,

“We appreciate working with our Smith Machinery Sales Engineer, Klaus Lassig. It is a pleasure to deal with a machinist and prior machine shop owner. We get this in Klaus.”

For more information on Precision Tech, call them at 801-285-7288.

For information on Mazak machine tools, contact Smith Machinery at 801-263-6403 or visit their website at www.smithmachinetools.com.

“ We looked throughout the United States for suppliers because it was often difficult to find a company that met our requirements locally. Through a recommendation, we found Precision Tech, in Sandy, UT.

I purchased ISO-Kenetic probe weldments to exact specifications. These were high precision weldments that required certification. Terry and Tom fabricated these parts with 100% accuracy. They also made thousands of dollars of precision shielding and formulated kits that were crated and ready for delivery to my customers.

Precision Tech never let us down!”

Northrop.Grumman.wins. $109M.Air.Force.contract

Northrop Grumman Corp. said recently that it won a $109 million contract from the Air Force for work on the B-2 stealth bomber.

The company said it would produce a redesigned aft deck, a metal part that protects the plane’s composite-materials skin from hot engine exhaust.

The retrofitted part on the plane’s upper surface should reduce future maintenance service and repairs, the company said.

Northrop is the Air Force’s prime contractor on the B-2, which was designed to evade radar detection while making long-range flights into enemy territory.

BAE.produces.MOLLE.components.for.US.Army

BAE Systems has produced more than 15 million Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment (MOLLE) components for the US Army and the Defense Logistics Agency.

The MOLLE is the primary field equipment system used by the army to carry specific equipment and supplies as per mission requirements.

The system, based on the Core Rifleman configuration, consists of a large assault pack, a variety of vests, pockets, backpacks and a hydration system.

The system was first developed in 1997 to improve load-carrying equipment effectiveness and sustain heavier loads. BAE Protection Systems vice-president Don Dutton said: “The MOLLE system provides users with a completely customisable set of equipment which allows for readiness, mobility and efficiency of the war-fighter.”

Boeing.submits.Chinook.production.proposal.to.US.Army

Boeing has submitted a multiyear contract proposal to the US Army for the production and delivery of 155 CH-47F helicopters.

The second five-year, firm fixed-price proposal will not only provide the war-fighter with vertical lift capability, but will also help the army reach its 464 Chinook acquisition target outlined in the CH-47F helicopter program.

The company has trained and equipped eight US Army units with the helicopter to date and is currently equipping the ninth unit.

The helicopter is used by the army to conduct air assault, transport, medical evacuations and support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Column:.Report.finds.defense.firms.pay.average.tax.rate.of.17.5%

A new report by the Citizens for Tax Justice and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found that defense contractors pay a 17.5% average tax rate annually.

“While the federal corporate tax code ostensibly requires big corporations to pay a 35% corporate income tax rate, on average, the 280 corporations in our study paid only about half that amount,” the report said.

Private.jet.business.prepares.to.take.off Flying in a private jet used to be the ultimate status symbol, but the recession completely knocked the wind out of the industry -- until now.

Private jet travel is staging a comeback. As major airlines are hiking airfares and cutting routes, and long lines at security and delayed flights weigh on travelers, private jet carriers are seeing the first increase in demand since 2008.

In fact, 12% of wealthy Americans (those with a net worth of $5 million or higher) said they plan to boost spending on private jet travel this year, up from 9% in 2010, according to the Luxury Institute’s wealth survey.

It’s not only the rich: Less affluent consumers are also starting to trade up, as some private jet firms lower prices to lure in new business through flight-sharing deals and social networking campaigns on Facebook that offer last-minute deals.

Another sign that things are looking up: Strong sales of Gulfstream Aerospace’s latest and greatest luxury liner, the G650, which holds about 14 to 16 passengers and costs a cool $64 million. The company is entirely sold out of the plane for the next five years and it hasn’t even begun deliveries on it yet, according to Jeff Miller, a spokesman for the company.

“[The private jet industry is] not going to get back to where it was at its peak in the late 1990s, but anything is better than where we are,” said aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia of the Teal Group.

Over the past few years, the struggling economy put the brakes on private jet travel. Businesses mostly did away with executive jets and luxury travelers downgraded to first-class commercial flights. To add insult to injury, rising gas prices and the environmental impact from carbon emissions also put private planes out of favor.

Then there was the 2008 gaffe when the CEOs of the Big Three auto companies flew on private jets to Washington to request taxpayer bailout money. “That was the nadir,” said Alex Wilcox, CEO of

Global biotech company buys ASU spinout

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. purchased Intrinsic Bioprobes Inc. for an undisclosed price and will continue to operate the company in Tempe, said Randy Nelson, who spun IBI out of ASU in 1996 when he was a professor.

Nelson ran the company for 10 years before he returned to ASU to run the Molecular Biomarkers Lab at the Biodesign Institute. Dobrin Nedelkov took over operations as CEO and scientific director of IBI, while Nelson held the title of president.

After the sale to Thermo Fisher, Nelson will continue to be involved with the business as a consultant. Nedelkov and IBI’s nine other staffers now are among Thermo Fisher’s 34,000 employees in 150 countries worldwide, Nelson said.

The publicly traded company, which is No. 258 on the Fortune 500, has been on a shopping spree, paying $2.1 billion for Calif.-based Dionex Corp. to expand its Asian operations and $260 million for Canada-based Fermentas Inter national Inc. last year.

IBI’s relationship with Thermo Fisher began more than a year ago when they partnered to identify protein bio markers based on IBI’s mass spectrometry technology, a technique used to analyze proteins to help diagnose disease before symptoms occur.

Chuck Kummeth, president of Thermo Fisher’s laboratory consumables business, said IBI will enhance Thermo Fisher’s position in the rapidly emerging field of clinical proteomics.

“It is a simple, yet powerful approach to uncovering the proteomics basis of disease, and it better positions us to support our customers in their efforts to realize the promise of personalized medicine,” he said.

JetSuite, which runs a small fleet of Phenom 100s that seat four passengers.

But finally, things are looking up. To bring flyers back, some jet companies, like Berkshire Hathaway’s NetJets, which let members share a small portion of the cost of owning a private plane, have lowered prices significantly. But even fractional ownership doesn’t come cheap. On Flexjet, for example, the cost of an initial investment in a private plane -- the same as buying one-sixteenth of a plane -- starts at $200,000 for 50 hours of flight time a year.

Nevertheless, Flexjet says its fractional business is up 120% year-over-year as of August.

For those with a little less to spend, small charter firms can cost substantially less, especially since many have been slashing fares recently.

JetSuite now offers one-way trips from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for less than $1,000 -- split the cost four ways and each passenger only shells out $250 for a private flight to Vegas. That’s nearly the same as the cost of a one-way first-class ticket.

The jet carrier also introduced “SuiteDeals” in April where fans on Facebook can buy last-minute legs for $499. That may be just enough to reel in more travelers, said Harlan Platt, a professor of finance who covers airline industry at Northeastern University’s College of Business Administration in Boston.

Top 1% are getting even richerBut it’s not just the super-rich and aspirational consumers that are supporting this niche industry.

Corporate clients make up a majority of the private jet travelers and, as profits improve, more businesses will take advantage of this mode of transportation -- even if environmental concerns persist, Platt said. For business travelers, the speed and convenience of a private plane is particularly attractive, especially when it’s billed to an expense account.“When people of means decide that the extra $10,000 [to fly on a private plane] is worth it, you’ll know the economy has left the contraction,” said Platt. That may be “the best leading indicator of the whole economy.”

Liberty Safes, the #1 manufacturer of full-size residential safes in the United States, and one of the largest in the world, has some good news to share.

The company was founded nearly 25 years ago as a safe manufacturer in the little town of Payson Utah. More than a decade ago, the company made the decision to move some of its manufacturing overseas, to China. They believed they needed to make this dif-ficult move in order to remain competitive. The company retained its manufacturing plant in Payson, and continued to manufacture more than 55% of the company’s safes domestically. A smaller percentage, approximately 45%, of the company’s safes were manufactured in Shanghai, China.

That was several years ago, long term employee and director of engineering Buddy O’Neal, said. “Today, we’re bringing manufacturing of our full line of safes back to the United States. Back to Payson UT.”

When asked why the decision to con-solidate manufacturing back in the United States, Buddy said, “We’re do-ing it for the reason many other com-panies are making this same decision

-- we were experiencing poor quality, missed shipments and late deliveries. It just wasn’t worth it.”

Today, Liberty Safes manufactures their safes exclusively in the United States, but they needed to make some changes in their Payson manufacturing facility before they could take this step.

“We really focused on manufacturing automation”, Buddy said. With all in-house process-ing (we start with raw materials), we needed to find a way to manufacture our safes less expensively while still ensuring that we were building the best quality safes in the world.”

Among the company’s recent purchases designed to increase automation was the purchase of their second TRUMPF TruLaser 2030 laser, which they purchased just months ago. “It

was the second TruLaser 2030 laser we purchased from TRUMPF, and we expect to purchase our 3rd TRUMPF laser shortly.”

“We evaluated a number of laser machines, and while TRUMPF initially seemed to be on the high end in terms of cost, when we really did the evaluation, they were the best value.” Buddy admits even he was surprised that such a well known brand in the laser machine tool industry could be so cost effective and he is proud to buy a laser machine that is manufac-tured in the United States. He says, “The compact TruLaser 2030 is designed especially for thin sheet processing and it facilitated a cost-effective introduction into automated laser processing for us. We were additionally pleased with the excellent beam qual-ity of the TruCoax resonator

which results in high part quality in the thin sheet range.”

Buddy said. “We told Don Jones, our local sales person for the TRUMPF line, we will have more hours on our machines than any of your other customers.” The first TRUMPF laser (in-stalled in December 2008) consistently saw 7 days a week, 24 hours a day of operation. Since purchasing the second TRUMPF laser, Buddy says the per machine usage is a little lower, but is still exceptionally high. “We’re building processes into our manufacturing that will allow us to run 24x7 lights out.”

Since purchasing the TRUMPF laser machines, Buddy and his team are very satisfied with the service and support they continue to receive. “Don isn’t a high pressure sales guy”, Buddy said. “He sells us what we need, he is very knowledgeable, and he even does research on other products that will help us to move to automation - products that he doesn’t even sell.”

Today, Liberty Safes are manufactured in a 200,000 square foot facility with the help of 240 em-

ployees. The safes are sold through dealers, hardware companies, and sporting goods retailers throughout the United States. They range in price from approximately $899 to $4999. Because they are fire proof, Buddy says they are utilized for much more than gun storage. He continued, “In the recent forest fires that occurred around the country this past summer, many house-holds lost everything they owned with the exception of what they stored in our fire resistant Liberty Safes”.

Liberty Safes is having a banner year, Buddy says, and in fact they expect 2011 to beat revenues of any other year in the history of the business.

‘Flying Robot’ pilot helps find IEDs in Helmand

Lance Corporal Rob McInerney is currently working at the forefront of counter-IED operations in Afghanistan piloting the

‘Flying Robot’, which is part of the Talisman counter-IED system.

Talisman has been designed to provide an increased level of assurance along routes throughout the region. It consists of a suite of cutting-edge equipment, including armoured vehicles, optical cameras and remote-controlled vehicles.

This life-saving equipment is being used to support combat logistic patrols, which can comprise several hundred vehicles and trek through the country delivering vital supplies to bases for the troops on the front line.

Lance Corporal Rob McInerney, aged 26, serves with 15 Field Support Squadron, part of 21 Engineer Regiment - the first troops to use the new system on the ground in Afghanistan. See Related News.

His role is to pilot the MAV (Micro Air Vehicle), otherwise known as the ‘Flying Robot’ or ‘T-Hawk’:

“The MAV is a great piece of kit and complements the rest of the equipment,” he said. “The MAV has two cameras which feed information back to a laptop so that the commander is then better placed to make decisions.

“We have been involved in a few contacts on a couple of the operations that we have been on, which made the day interesting! The most satisfying part of the tour for me is when we get the guys to their destination safely; after all, that is the aim of our job!”

Lance Corporal McInerney has been with 15 Field Support Squadron, based in Ripon, North Yorkshire, since they re-roled from a Field Support Squadron in which he was a plant operator:

“It has been good to learn something new but I am looking forward to getting back to plant,” he said.

He is also looking forward to getting back to the UK to see his fiancée, Laura, and his daughter, Anna, who is only five months old:

“She was born two weeks before I came out here so it will be amazing to see the difference in her now,” he added.

Lance Corporal McInerney has two other brothers serving in the Army. One is serving with the Royal Signals and the other is due to deploy on operations quite soon. He said:

“My brother Dave, who is in 9 Para[chute] Squadron, Royal Engineers, is due to deploy to Afghanistan on the next tour and I wish him good luck.”

Honeywell.Looks.East.While.Innovating.For.Safe.Growth.

Like the key air transport sectors that it serves, Honeywell’s worldview is increasingly shifting eastward as markets in the Middle East and Asia continue to show strong growth. And the emphasis of the U.S. group’s technological development work remains focused on trying to ensure that traffic growth can be achieved without compromising safety.

“It used to be the case that 80 percent of customers, suppliers and manufacturers were in the United States. Aircraft were designed to fly U.S. coast-to-coast because that was 80 percent of what was needed,” said Paolo Carmassi, the company’s president for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. In the last 10 years, however, the market has started to shift eastward at an unprecedented rate, presenting a range of challenges and opportunities.

Honeywell aims to support this growth in various ways, including more efficient auxiliary power units, wheels and brakes, and smarter avionics to enable customers to perform better. In India and Africa, in particular, the lack of infrastructure means that aircraft have to be smarter to maintain the same level of safety. “We have developed a number of upgrades–usually simple upgrades–to enable aircraft to overcome the deficiencies on the ground by giving pilots a new level of awareness,” Carmassi told AIN.

One example is the SmartPath ground-based augmentation system, which improves the accuracy and integrity of GPS signals to the point where they can be used to provide approach guidance to as little as 200 feet above runways. The conventional instrument landing system requires separate installations for each end of each runway at an airport, but a single SmartPath, costing around the same $3 million, can support multiple approach paths to all the runways at an airport.

Meanwhile, SmartLanding helps pilots to recognize when their airplane is too high or too fast for the length of the runway.

On the ground, Honeywell’s SmartRunway helps pilots avoid runway incursions in poor visibility. Like SmartLanding, SmartRunway is a software upgrade to the enhanced ground proximity warning system that has contributed to a dramatic reduction in accidents resulting from controlled flight into terrain.

Another Honeywell product that has proved very popular in the Middle East is the IntuVue weather radar. “Our latest generation radar enables pilot to detect significant weather from as far as 300 miles away,” Carmassi said. “The weather is visualized in 3-D. It’s not just a 2-D picture where you can’t see what’s behind, so the pilot has a better picture to identify areas to be avoided.”

Honeywell is also helping define future air traffic management systems as part of the U.S. NextGen and European SESAR programs, and the technologies developed will ultimately find application further afield, not the least of which is a Gulf region badly in need of airspace modernization. For example, as part of SESAR, Honeywell is developing

its SmartTraffic airborne separation assistance system (ASAS), an extension of the existing traffic alert and collision avoidance system that detects when other aircraft are too close and suggests evasive maneuvers.

The ASAS system can detect aircraft within a 40-mile radius, meaning that separation between aircraft can be reduced where there is no radar coverage, and ATC can allow more aircraft to use their most efficient cruising altitudes. “SmartTraffic is an example of a product that we believe reduces the time spent in the air, the amount of fuel burned and the impact on the environment,” said Carmassi.

Being able to complete the mission in the most severe meteorological conditions is particularly important at the end of the sort of long-range flights that Gulf airlines commonly undertake. Carmassi said another SESAR project that should help achieve that goal is the combined vision system, which marries imagery from an infrared camera with a synthetic view of the world outside generated from information in the terrain database. “The database stops you getting lost, while the infrared camera shows that the runway is where it’s supposed to be and is free of obstacles, enhancing the awareness of the pilot and allowing many more flights to be completed,” he said.

Micron.Ranks.First.in.Science.Strength.Category.of.Patent.Board.Semiconductor.Industry.Scorecard

Micron Technology, Inc. announced the company has earned the top ranking for the second consecutive year in the Science Strength category of the Patent Board’s Semiconductor industry scorecard that tracks the global patent activity relating to companies’ innovation, technology and science strengths.

Boeing.Signs.New.737.Deals.

Boeing Co. has secured more than 600 commitments from airlines to buy a revamped version of its 737 jetliner, an increase of about 100 since it formally launched the aircraft project in August.

The commitments from eight carriers, as well as ongoing talks with other airlines, reflect strong interest in the 737 MAX, said Jim Albaugh, chief executive of Boeing’s commercial-airliner unit.

In late August, Boeing said it had lined up 496 commitments from five airlines to buy the 737 MAX, which will have new, advanced engines. Chicago-based Boeing, after years of analysis and discussions with key customers, decided to build a new-engine version of its workhorse jet, rather than take the costlier and riskier approach of building an entirely new single-aisle plane.

Boeing plans to deliver the first 737 MAX in 2017—two years behind a competing model from arch-rival Airbus called the A320neo that has garnered more than 1,200 firm orders or commitments.

Mr. Albaugh said Boeing is still working on the design of the 737 MAX but has settled on a fan diameter of 68 inches (173 centimeters) for the LEAP-1B engines that CFM International will make for the narrow-body jet. CFM is a joint venture between U.S.-based General Electric Co. and France’s Safran SA.

The aerospace company announced last month that it plans to finalize the jet’s configuration in 2013. The first flight for the 737 MAX is scheduled for 2016. Boeing said the new-engine variant will have 10% to 12% lower fuel burn than the current 737s. It says the plane’s fuel burn will be 4% lower than the competing A320neo’s. Airbus, a unit of European Aeronautics Defence & Space Co., has challenged that claim, saying the A320neo will be more fuel-efficient than Boeing’s revamped 737.

Boeing hasn’t revealed the names of carriers that have made commitments to the 737 MAX. One of the customers is AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, which helped steer Boeing toward a new-engine version when it placed a big order of narrow-body jets earlier this year with both Boeing and Airbus.

effective load-carriage system that can easily be customized to support their mission, with or without body armor,” said ATK Security and Sporting group President Ron Johnson. “We are honored to have been selected as a key supplier of this mission-critical product and proud of our role in supporting the Marines.”

The new load bearing equipment system is designed to allow Marines to carry equipment needed in support of combat operations. The U.S. Marine Corps’ new pack increases the overall combat effectiveness of the user by maximizing the ability to carry combat loads more efficiently, minimizing the burdens of weight and improving overall system compatibility.

Embraer.Expects.Defense.Unit.to.Lead.Firm’s.Growth.

Embraer SA, the world’s No. 4 aircraft maker, sees its defense unit leading company growth, expanding by “double digits” in 2012 and accounting for one fifth of revenue in a few years, Chief Executive Frederico Curado said.

Embraer, based in São Jose dos Campos, is likely to look in its own backyard for many of those military orders, Mr. Curado said in an interview. Huge orders are likely to come from Brazil, which he said has a decades-long backlog of investment needs in its security apparatus. The needs have become even more pressing with the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games that Brazil is hosting, as well as the development of its huge offshore oil reserves.

The company also expects to do more business with the armed forces of countries with whom Brazil has long relationships, such as in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa. The defense sector, spun off into its own unit last year, has already delivered planes to Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador in Latin America. The company also signed contracts with Indonesia and has received interest from Europe as well. Revenue at Embraer is likely to climb some 7% this year to around $5.7 billion, Curado said, coming mainly from sales of commercial and executive airplanes, with military craft accounting for about 10% of sales. Next year, the defense segment will enjoy double-digit growth while the other segments’ growth will be single digit. In a few years, the company expects military revenue to account for 20% of sales, with another 20% coming from executive airplanes, 50% from commercial planes and the last 10% from services.

The selection of a new fighter jet for Brazil’s air force—a decision which has been repeatedly pushed back by the government—will be important because Embraer will work with whichever firm is the eventual winner to adapt planes to meet local needs. But Mr. Curado said the development of its transport plane, the KC-390, is more significant, adding a new product to the firm’s portfolio. The company also holds out hope that it will break into the U.S. military market, and is awaiting the results of the latest bid, which would be to deliver its Super Tucano fighter planes, and is expected shortly.

U.S..Military. Sees. JLTV.Development.Gain.Speed

The U.S. military’s program to replace the Humvee has had more ups and downs than the road on which they are tested, but things look to be moving forward. U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps leaders trimmed a lot of extras to cut the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) cost by $100,000. This also will slice 16 months from the $52 million engineering, manufacturing and development phase, which will end in May 2012. That means the $270,000 base vehicle will come cheaper and sooner, as a single contract award is now scheduled for 2015.

The Army wants at least 20,000 JLTVs with the potential for a larger buy for the program with an estimated worth of $20 billion. Army officials plan to replace a third of their 150,000-vehicle Humvee fleet with the JLTV. The Marine Corps plans to buy 5,500.

The services are now trying to convince the Senate Appropriations Committee, which had recommended the JLTV program be terminated, to come along for the ride.

The new vehicle, outlined in an Oct. 3 draft request for proposal, will have the survivability of a mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle, better mobility than a Humvee and the ability to add mission kits. It will be transportable by ship or helicopter and be able to provide 30 kilowatts of exportable power.

Six variants with companion trailers will make up the JLTV family, which will include a four-seat, close-combat weapons carrier, a two-seat utility carrier and shelter, a four-seat general purpose vehicle, a heavy guns carrier and command-and-control-on-the-move vehicle.

The latest changes include an increase to allowable weight from 12,600 pounds to 14,000 pounds. The original number was needed so the Marine Corps’ CH-53 Sea Stallion could sling load the JLTV at high altitudes and high temperatures.

But industry teams would have to experiment with exotic materials to reach such weight, said Katheryn Hasse, Lockheed Martin’s director of tactical wheeled vehicles.

And while most initial entries could produce as much as twice the required 30 kilowatts of external power, the new standard will cut weight and cost.

Four defense teams led by BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Oshkosh Defense and General Tactical Vehicles, a joint team of General Dynamics Land Systems and Humvee-maker AM General, have developed prototypes and will submit bids for the EMD phase.

Three will be selected to move forward. Officials are mum on a lot of the details, as they don’t want to show their hand before placing their bets.
