At Pacific we see our company not only as a bicycle factory, but as an international designer workshop. With a staff of 120 people, 20 of whom are engineers, it is our company’s aim to foster long term relationships with our customers. We welcome them to approach us with new ideas so we can help them to bring their bicycle dreams and visions to life.

It is in this way that Pacific has honed its unique business strategy to provide a powerful R&D platform for over 40 renowned brands worldwide and a factory that specializes in quality, high-end products for niche markets.

International customers stay in our private rooms on the fourth floor. This “Pacific Hotel” has become a meeting spot for high-end bicycle customers and designers from all over the world, where they can discuss their latest ideas and dreams.

Two floors of the building are devoted entirely to our showroom—which is full of Pacific bikes from old to new—as well as some classic international models and various bicycle paraphernalia. To complement our existing facility, we are currently expanding with the construction of a new company building. This modern, purpose-built facility will greatly streamline every aspect of design and production to fuel our future success and sustainability.

George Lin is the founder, chairman, heart and soul of Pacific Cycles. In 1980, he founded the company with a vision to provide a state-of-the-art R&D workshop for like-minded bicycle designers around the world. Because of his broad experience and in-depth knowledge of bicycles, he has several unofficial titles, such as “Godfather of the Taiwanese bicycle industry” and “Bicycle Professor.”

George works closely with his staff, other designers and customers to make sure everyone is continually learning and growing. The ability for Pacific Cycles to grow with each customer via the fulfillment of their needs is one of the many benefits Pacific offers over other manufacturers.

George frequently makes public appearances at universities, management societies and television shows. Pacific Cycles won the “Best Small and Medium Enterprise” and “Rising Star” awards in 2002. More recently, it was featured in the prestigious Commonwealth Magazine as one of “25 New Hopes for Taiwan.” Michael Lin, returned from study in the USA, joined his father at Pacific in 1997 and became the company president 7 years ago. Like his father, Michael has indicated a strong inclination in product design and development.

The Green TriangleIn his groundbreaking book, Ecotopia, Ernest Callenbach proposed the idea of a “Green Triangle”, as a means of generating ideas for personal, community and national change. The principal that relates to these three points is that any time you do something beneficial for one of them, you will almost inevitably also do something beneficial for the other two — whether you are planning to or not. For example, let’s say you decide to ride a bike to work to improve your health. You will also end up saving some money on gas and be helping the environment by causing less pollution.

The first major product focus

for Pacific Cycles was the Birdy

folding bike from Riese und

Müller. George Lin first met

Markus Riese and Heiko Müller in

Germany at a 1993 bicycle trade

show. They had a unique but

rough conceptual idea fabricated

to demonstrate their functional

idea for a folding bike.

Due to many hurdles in German

manufacturing the two had been

unable to find a source they could

work with to further their concept

into production. When they first

met the middle aged Asian man

standing in front of their bike they

were shocked and in disbelief of

his direct words; “I’ll build that

for you. I also want to sell it!”

George was serious and his offer

presented an ideal way to start

producing bikes.

The two came to Taiwan to work

closely with George and through

testing and refinement of many

developments for a final design that had

correct riding feel and folded small. Birdy

finally became a reality for manufacture.

Over the years, Birdy has brought great

success for Riese und Müller in Europe and

for Pacific in the Asian markets.

Restyled for 2006, by designer Stijn Deferm,

Birdy got a new sleek look that was

awarded an iF Product Design award. This

new look added to the feel of Birdy and in

this modern day of cycling transport Birdy

is still a top choice worldwide.

Reach Racing feels just like a full size road bike! Its wheel base, riding position and frame structure are basically identical to a non-folding bicycle and the smaller wheels actually make starting up much easier, giving fast and smooth acceleration. Reach City was designed to go along wherever your adventures take you and enhance the experience. It is fast, rigid, light and comfortable for both short and long trips. Offering a compact storage size, it is also ideal for commuting.

Building on past successes,

George Lin wanted to further

optimize the riding style and

functionality of folding bikes.

The goal of Reach was to build a

compact folding bicycle that felt,

handled and went as fast as a full-

sized road racing bike.

With the belief that bikes can not

fold in the middle of the frame

and still remain stable and firm

under the rider, a unique approach

was needed to compact the frame

into a transportable package.

The final version was a 9.6kg

road racing bike that could be

compacted into a travel bag and

then quickly be assembled again

for a full-sized feel ride.

Throughout Asia the Pacific brand

was growing, as more people

heard of the company developing

innovative and exciting new

products that easily fit into

peoples’ daily transportation and

recreational lives. Reach had

become known for its ‘full-size

bike feel’ and many customers began using

it in competitions. It was at this time that

George teamed up with Ryan Carroll and

they further refined designs to optimize

a new frame that focused specifically on

these customers’ needs. After many months

of in-house development and testing, as

well as working closely with professional

triathletes, Pacific crafted the race-ready

Reach SL — weighing in at a mere 8kgs.

This new compact folding bicycle was an

immediate success, having fully achieved

Pacific’s goal of making Reach competitive

against a full-size road racing bicycle.

George was presented with sharing many

of the 1st place awards the athletes won

on the new Reach SL in national-level

competitions. The same light weight and

stiff frame is now found on all Reach

models for the ultimate ride.

For CarryAll we took the successful CarryMe folding system and developed it into a trike that rolls easily with added stability. We used advanced, lightweight aluminum tubing and components that could previously only be found on high end road and mountain bikes. The idea behind the CarryMe

concept all began when George

Lin imagined having a bike that

could easily be carried with you

on a train, bus or plane—then

after reaching your destination

just jump on your bicycle and

ride off. Many of the techniques

learned from developing and

riding Pacific’s other folding bikes

were used as a basis for criteria

that needed to be achieved in such

an impossibly small bicycle.

CarryMe began with much

development going into custom

making the special 8” wheels

that had to roll fast and ride like

a full size bike. To achieve the

speed and cadence of a full size

bike, custom gears, custom pitch

chain and freewheel parts were

all designed so the same gear

ratio and could be achieved. To

further optimize this little folder

an optional 2 speed Schlumpf

Speed Drive unit was added to the

bottom bracket area for increased

speed and gearing range.

Since developing CarryMe,

George Lin has become one of its

most avid fans, and has ridden it

in more than 16 countries!

Compared to other consumer products,

folding bikes are an interesting challenge...

right on the cusp of engineering/structural

design and user-focused design —they have

to work well, be easy to use while cool and

appealing! ‘Folders’ are a keystone of future

personal transport—making public travel

effectively ‘door-to-door’. They are compact,

portable ‘human-amplifiers’, while being

pure fun to use.

In any survey, small wheel folders are only

a tiny minority—most people choose large

wheeled bikes. There are variety of reasons

for this: tradition, perception of ease of

pedaling, and emulating bikes used in sports.

But the most important is probably image. So

when we designed the iF series, we thought

“what if we could combine the benefits of the

latest small folders into a compact, full sized

bike, with the design quality, innovation and

value people expect in other personal tools,

such as iPods and mobile phones?”

The IF Mode is the first result of this thinking,

combining large wheels with the benefits

of near instant folding into a small, narrow,

convenient package. Then, like modern

luggage, it rolls everywhere on its main

wheels. With monoblade wheel mountings,

enclosed transmission and uncluttered

design, it aims to attract new people towards

using a bicycle as a useful form of transport.

It adds all the benefits of cycling, and folding

bicycles as an elegant product that even

motorists will be proud to own and use.

The iF Cross and iF Reach offer the same

benefits as the iF mode, but based on the

latest trends in conventional bicycles: using

the lightest and most highly developed

wheels, gears and suspension systems.

These bikes appeal to existing cycling

enthusiasts as well as new riders. They

make high performance cycling portable.

The original iF Mode prototype was a

concept; it demonstrated the basic fold,

structure and shape, but the engineering

was not ready or optimised for production.

It posed a difficult challenge, using

engineering or automotive—rather than

traditional bicycle making—techniques.

Pacific put engineering and bicycle making

skills to work, keeping in mind the vision

to make something appealing to both

enthusiasts and non-cycists.

Michael Lin and Ryan Carroll used leading-

edge Solidworks 3D modeling software to

create the iF Mode from scratch, with more

than 240,000 steps in six months. Every single

part, including chain and drivetrain were

fully functional in this huge project. As a

result of this effort the radical iF Mode went

into production months, not years, later.

These bikes appeal to existing cycling enthusiasts as well as new riders. They make high performance cycling portable.

2rider is Pacific’s unique 4-wheeled cycle

that is more than just a bicycle—it offers

the special experience of truly sharing the

ride with others; side by side. Much work

went into crafting full sized prototypes

for testing suspension setup, drive train

execution and overall ride ergonomics.

The Pacific development team, under

the leadership of George Lin, put many

refinements into 2rider so it could be as

uniquely functional as possible.

Other special needs items that have been

developed and offered by Pacific are the

Micah and Handy tricycles. These unique

machines were designed from the ground

up with special needs in mind.

Micah is the perfect companion for those

who have cerebral palsy or related

conditions. Riding this trike promotes

growth and physical learning through a

healthy, fun and a safe experience.

The original concept of Micah was

generated from the study of three

college students. The prototype was

one of the winners in the 2001 2nd

Taiwan College Creative Competition.

In 2000 they donated the bike and

design to the Victory Home, a Christian

organization specializing in helping

children afflicted with cerebral palsy,

located in Pingdong, Taiwan. During the

exhibition of the 9th “Young Designer’s

Exhibition”, the prototype caught the

eyes of George Lin, president of Pacific

Cycles and his wife. Soon after that the

Victory Home cooperated with Pacific

based on the topic called “A study of the

tricycle rehabilitating device design for

children with cerebral palsy”. In 2002

Pacific produced the first version. The

all aluminum body weighed only one

third of the original metal prototype with

hundreds of improvements. Taiwan has

become the third country to produce

cerebral palsy tricycles after the United

States and Australia.

Pacific’s Handy handcycle has been

engineered to provide the ideal cycling

experience for athletic advancement

of upper body strength. It is especially

beneficial to those suffering from

paraplegia or similar conditions.

The story of special needs bicycles


Pacific put a massive amount of effort

and experience into the development of

these tricycles with a view to achieving

many of the same common goals of 2

wheeled bicycles. Focus for design was to

produce strong and lightweight frames,

a comfortable body position, responsive

handling, ease of steering and an overall

ability to travel safely at a fast pace.

Through the extensive work in the Pacific

workshop, George’s team were able to

help craft such performance features into

both tricycles.

bicycle industry. Many designers

and companies have sought the

advice and knowledge of Pacific

to shape concepts and dreams

into manufactured reality. This

integrated design and technology

approach has become its own

entity now, as the Studio Pacific team. Products designed and

developed by this new team

proudly adorn the “Studio Design by Pacific Cycles” badge.

At the forefront of this new

multidisciplinary development

team is Michael Lin. Michael has

learned from the passion and

creative drive of George allowing

the new team to embody the best

aspects of design and engineering

creation. Michael is committed

to combining creative talent and

effective management techniques.

As Studio Pacific strives to take

Product Design Award is presented

annually by international Forum (iF)

Design in Hannover, Germany. With

a history dating back to 1953, it is one

of the world’s most prestigious design

awards. Consumer products from all

over the world compete for awards in

16 categories, including leisure and

lifestyle, lighting, consumer electronics

and interior design. This year, 2,808

products from 39 countries competed for

an award. Of the 802 products labeled

for excellent designs, the 50 that

scored highest in shape, performance,

creativity, safety, environmental

friendliness were honored with a GOLD

award at the annual awards ceremony,

held in Hannover on March 3.

Another key team member is Ryan Carroll,

Chief Development Engineer. Ryan has

helped deliver many exciting new cycling

designs for clients worldwide. Studio

Pacific harnesses the creativity knowledge

of its dynamic team to provide elegant,

effective and high value designs. Its

success is built firmly on working closely

with clients and sharing its considerable

experience to provide a comprehensive

design and development service.

Michael and Ryan have also worked

closely with Mark Sanders, creator and

inventor of integrated Folding Technology.

Their combined talent produced the

Pacific Cycles iF Mode bicycle, which was

awarded a 2009 international Forum (iF)

All designers that work with Pacific take delight in the

chance to be invited into a true workshop atmosphere.

Designers experience the realization of their dreams,

solving problems and making refinements to achieve

an ideal solution, so their concepts can become

manufactured products. Some designers working over

longer periods of development stay in Pacific’s private

rooms on the upper floor of the front building. This

has become a meeting spot for cutting-edge designers

from all over the world to enjoy spending time together

discussing their latest ideas and dreams, often finding

new paths to explore.

The whole Pacific team spends countless hours in the

R&D workshop honing and refining products. Many

hours are put into crafting new tubing shapes or even

developing special techniques to ensure success of the

new item. But the passion does not stop there...

Throughout the week and on weekends, the team are

riding new products, adjusting and taking notes. By

example, George Lin has inspired this within his whole

team—to not only think about the cycle they are crafting

but to use it and feel it working. After many outings the

riders bring back fresh ideas to the workshop for further

refinement and development—in a neverending cycle

of inspiration and improvement.

Over the years, Pacific has worked with many

outstanding companies in the industry, including

Astrix, Banshee, Canfield, Niner, Diamondback, Orbea

and 24 bicycles to produce quality, innovative products.
