It’s a perplexing bit of snobbery to those who know that the range of Chardonnays, Pinot Grigios, Pinot Noirs, Cabernets and other specialty wines from the state’s more than 200 wineries sprawled across nearly 14,000 rolling acres have captured the palates of wine connoisseurs the world over.

With the U.S. now standing as the world’s largest wine market, according to the International Vine and Wine Organization (OIV), based in France, it seems as if more Americans than ever can relate to the words of Benjamin Franklin (“The discovery of a wine is of greater moment than the discovery of a constella-tion”) and George Carlin (“What wine goes with Captain Crunch?”)

“I think people are more cognizant about what they consume and that there is a greater interest in wine in general,” said Jennifer Eckinger, execu-tive director of the Pennsylvania Winery Association (PWA), a trade organization that represents more than 100 member Pennsylvania vintners.

“When people think about food, with the popularity of food shows and celebrity chefs and things of that nature, they con-sider wine the part of any celebration.”

Pennsylvania wineries have certainly come a long way since Frenchman Peter Legaux launched the state’s first commercial, if ultimately unsuccessful, vineyard, Pennsylvania Vine Company, in Spring Mill, Montgomery County, in 1798 (“A History of Wine in America,” Thomas Pinney.)

Uncontrollable crop disease, followed years later by Prohibition in 1920, threat-ened to crush the promise of Pennsylvania’s viticulture permanently, until the passage of the Limited Winery Act in the 1960s and the emergence of farm win-eries in the 1970s helped spark a multi-billion dollar industry in the Keystone State.

A varied climate and nearly perfect soil, flecked with fertil-ity-enhancing gravel and limestone, now nurtures more than 70 native and hybrid varietals and artisan vinifera grapes on some of the most fertile terrain on the East Coast.

Ehow.com notes that Pennsylvania has some of the best conditions for grow-ing the popular and complex Cabernet Sauvignon grape varietal, a red grape variety used by itself to produce Cabernet Sauvignon wine, or blended with other grape varietals. According to the website, vineyards in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York make up the three states known as the “concord wine belt,” producing the hearty white Concord grape varietal that is known to have a lower sugar content than European grapes and is used in such wines as Manischewitz.

According to PWA, Pennsylvania ranks fifth nationally in the amount of grapes grown, sev-

Some wine aficionados in Pennsylvania still insist that their vino must come from California, Italy or almost any location not famous for cheesesteaks, shoofly pie and a certain weather-forecasting groundhog.

America’s manufacturing sector is growing, and The Rodon Group and K’NEX are a part of that growth. Founded in 1992, K’NEX Brands was established to make and sell what has become the world’s leading integrated construction toys for children and is America’s STEM building solution. The Rodon Group, a subsidiary of K’NEX Brands, L.P., has manufactured over 32 billion parts for the K’NEX building toy system. Reshoring 1 billion of dollars of business from China since 2010, The Rodon Group has been recognized as one of the leaders in the American Made movement.

During a recent White House “Investing in America” roundtable, Michael Araten, CEO and President of K’NEX Brands, joined 11 other busi-ness leaders to discuss reshoring, insourcing, and the benefits of U.S. Manufacturing. At the heart of the manufacturing renaissance is the devel-opment of a highly skilled workforce. K’NEX and Rodon know that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is the heart of innovation and innovation drives growth, profits and the jobs of the future. Manufacturing has changed dramatically in the past 20 years, requiring computer skills, robot-ics and the ability to understand and operate complex equipment.

Filling the STEM gap

STEM education and workforce development provide students today with the skills they’ll need to obtain good jobs in the future—the very skills that employers need. Without tech-sav-vy workers, the number of unfilled manufacturing jobs, at places like Rodon and others, will increase. There are 1 million unfilled manufacturing positions in the U.S. today. These jobs are unfilled because employers can’t find people with the required skill set.

Corporations need to lead by exam-ple and show the pathways of opportu-nity. K’NEX and Rodon actively work with local community colleges and technical schools to make sure stu-

dents—prospective employees—are get-ting the skills they need to work at com-panies like ours. If a job requires operat-ing manufacturing equipment, math and computer skills are a necessity.

Many companies nationwide are currently working short-handed because it is hard to find workers with the skills they need. We are proactively by partnering with local schools in training potential future employees, ultimately ensuring that we can fill job openings with skilled workers.

Students in the programs we work with get the math, science and comput-er skills they’ll need for jobs that entail building and operating robots. When they begin working at our manufactur-ing facility, they learn the production process, which we run with computers and robots. As our workforce gets older and people retire, we need a pipeline of highly trained people ready to take over. By partnering with schools, we become the employer of choice.

Building our future STEM workforce

K’NEX is America’s STEM building solution. We create and provide over 25 K’NEX Education STEM sets for class-room use. Each set provides a com-plete STEM solution, focusing on con-cepts taught in sequences that build upon each other and have real-world applications. Teacher guides include inquiry-based lessons that challenge students as they build, investigate, problem solve, discuss, and evaluate scientific and design principles in action. It is innovation in action.

This hands-on, inter-disciplinary approach gives students the skills and knowledge they need to become lifelong learners who can solve problems, think critically, and work collaboratively.

K’NEX and Rodon are committed to playing an integral role in preparing future manufacturing employees with the knowledge and skills they will need to thrive in this new technology-driven environment.

PENNSYLVANIA PROUD

In 1979, George Martin, a young attorney and single par-ent, was fired from a law firm for leaving work at 5pm one day to catch a train to pick up his 2 young children from daycare. He started his own firm 48 hours later and took on the cases that no one else wanted because in 1979 there was little money to be made on a workers’ compensation case. But he saw a bit of himself in these people he represented, struggling to make ends meet.

Now, 35 years later, George and his partners, Matt Wilson, Joe Huttemann, Al Carlson and John Dogum continue to dedi-cate their lives to helping injured workers protect the benefits to which they’re enti-tled. They do this by staying active in the legal community, working to correct unjust laws, and educating lawmakers, law-yers and future lawyers on the ongoing changes within the law.

NOT JUST FOLLOWING THE LAW BUT CHANGING IT TOO

They have helped to change the workers compensation laws which have improved the rights of Pennsylvanians who are injured at work. There is cur-rently a bill in front of Pennsylvania Senators that threatens to take away rights of workers who unwittingly work for employers who break the law by not carrying workers’ compensation insurance cover-age. The attorneys at Martin Law are doing everything in their power to make sure that bill does not pass into law. You can read more about this legis-lation by visiting www.paworkinjury.com/pa-legisla-tion.

Through their work with cli-ents, they’ve helped to change the way courts look at mental injuries. Al Carlson represents a client who was robbed at gun-

point while working at a state liquor store and now suffers from post-traumatic stress dis-order. The state denied him benefits saying the crime was a normal part of his job. Al fought right to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to change that decision and restore his bene-fits. The ultimate decision on the case which will be decided sometime in 2014 and will most certainly help all Pennsylvanians who suffer from work-related PTSD to obtain benefits.

IS YOUR ATTORNEY CERTIFIED* IN WORKERS’ COMPENSATION?

Since 2009, partner Matt Wilson has been on the commit-tee to implement a workers compensation certification pro-gram for the state of Pennsylvania. He assists in scoring the tests of the appli-cants for certification, and reports that the committee’s fine-tuning of the testing and certification process was rigor-ous and ongoing. “I worked with Judge [David B.] Torrey in the development of the exam and I have actually taken it three times.” Wilson said.

So why, you ask is certifica-tion important? This certifica-tion ensures that any Pennsylvanian can confidently choose an attorney who has proven through rigorous testing that they are among the most qualified in the state to handle your claim. Martin Law has the most credentialed attorneys in one firm in the state with 6 attorneys who are certified* as a specialist in the practice of workers’ compensation law by the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Section on Workers’ Compensation Law as authorized by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

YOUR RIGHT TO A SAFE WORKPLACE

Workplace safety is an important aspect of the work of Martin Law and it has become one of their most important messages for 2014. You may have noticed their new adver-tising campaign which focuses on the importance of safety in the workplace. “We would pre-fer that people didn’t get injured in the first place,” states George Martin in a current television ad. “However, we all know that no matter how many precau-tions are taken, that accidents and injuries do happen, and that’s where Martin Law steps in to help protect your rights.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act)

was passed to prevent workers from being killed or seriously harmed at work. The law requires employers to provide their employees with working conditions that are free of known dangers. The Act creat-ed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which sets and enforces protec-tive workplace safety and health standards. OSHA also provides information, training and assis-tance to workers and employ-ers. Workers may file a com-plaint to have OSHA inspect their workplace if they believe that their employer is not fol-lowing OSHA standards or that there are serious hazards.

As a worker you have the right to:

• a safe and healthful work-place

• tools and equipment need-

ed to do your job safely• training in a language you

understand• exercise your rights under

the law without retaliation and/or discrimination

If your employer retaliates against you because you are involved in raising concerns or reporting violations of environ-mental rules and regulations, you can contact OSHA for help.

With 14 attorneys and five offices in Bristol, Allentown, Reading, Malvern and Philadelphia, Martin Law is one of the largest firms in Pennsylvania of its kind, focus-ing solely on Workers’ Compensation, Social Security Disability, Long Term Disability and Veterans’ Benefits. For more information you can reach them at 215-587-8400 or online at www.paworkinjury.com.

... and there is something for every taste.”

Eckinger pointed out that there is no characteristic trait that unifies the regions of the Keystone State.

“The one identifier would be the diversity. You can have a winery and a vineyard or a winery without a vineyard … or just a vineyard. To have a winery you have to be producing a number of gallons per year to be a limited winery as a commercial operation, not just a hobby.”

The greatest concentration of winer-ies is in the Southeast region, formerly called the Philadelphia Countryside region, said Eckinger, who noted the high population could explain this.

“That particular region is very fortu-nate to have four prominent wine trails that are in operation — Bucks, Brandywine, Berks and Lehigh Valley. All of them are incredibly active and have quite a bit to offer as far as activi-ties and events, with wine tastings and festivals.”

Pennsylvania’s 12 wine trails zigzag-ging through the state are designated as groups of wineries located within close

proximity to each other and are designed to give visitors a “richly tex-tured wine experience,” according to PWA. “Because the growing conditions vary throughout the state, each wine trail offers a distinctive experience for the traveler and his or her palette.”

The trails include Berks County Wine Trail; Brandywine Valley Wine Trail; Bucks County Wine Trail; Endless Mountains Wine Trail; Groundhog Wine Trail; Hershey-Harrisburg Wine Country Trail; Lake Erie Wine Country Trail; Lehigh Valley Wine Trail; Mason-Dixon Wine Trail; Montgomery County Wine Trail; Southwest Passage Wine Trail and Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail.

A sampling of popular wineries, most of which host events year round, from each of the regions across the state:

Black Walnut Winery, 3000 Lincoln Highway, Sadsburyville, is housed in a restored 200-year old Chester County bank barn, offering a wide range of vinifera and hybrid wines from very dry to sweet. It maintains a tasting

enth in wine produc-tion and seventh in the number of licensed win-eries.

Wine Land, as PWA refers to the state’s win-eries in its latest promo-tional campaign, is divid-ed into six regions: Northwest; North Central; Northeast; Southwest; South Central and Southeast.

Comprising a dozen wine trails, each region can boast more than one winery, and many are

family-owned and operat-ed.

“There are actually wineries in all 50 states, and what makes Pennsylvania unique is that we have more than 200 wineries,” Eckinger said. “That shows the growth of the industry over the last 12 to 15 years. In 2000 there were around 50 wineries and we now have more than 200 — and the growth is throughout the entire state, not just in one region.

Navigating the region-al wine attractions got a lot easier for travelers last fall when PWA

debuted its mobile web-site, m.Pennsylvania.com.

“The mobile site allows you to see which wineries are open at the time you’re thinking of visiting. We looked at it as if somebody were traveling through the state,” Eckinger said. “No matter where you are in Pennsylvania, you’re less than an hour from at least one winery — and in many cases, more than one, Most residents, even neighbors, have yet to explore the vineyards just down the road. It’s a whole other world just waiting to be discovered

James Watson and John McDaniel founded Watson McDaniel in 1878 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Originally a manufacturer of safes used in banks and a variety of other institutions, Watson and McDaniel incorporated in 1897 as Watson McDaniel Company and branched out into the manufacture of steam specialty products , in particular, steam traps, separators, suction tee’s, pressure regulators and pump governors, based on the inventions of John McDaniel.. The growing business neces-sitated a move to Valley Forge in the Philadelphia suburbs in the early 1960’s where the manufacturing facility

remained for almost 50 years. The Watson McDaniel Company con-

tinued as a family organization until 1991 when they were purchased by Picut Industries as the first addition to their current large portfolio of manufacturing facilities, now including Picut Manufacturing, H. O. Trerice Company, American Products Company, Liquiflo, Accurate Bushing Company and Picut Industries Asia.

Today, the Pottstown-based company serves the global marketplace with a net-work of manufacturers, representatives, distributors, manufacturing plants and sales offices throughout the world. Along with a fabrication plant in Boyertown, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and a man-ufacturing plant and sales office in Shanghai, China, Watson McDaniel Company is poised to service the growing demand for steam specialty products both domestically and internationally.

As it looks to the future, in addition to more complete penetration of domestic markets, the company will continue to expand its international footprint in the global marketplace. A significant portion of Watson McDaniel’s current sales efforts are focused on international sales opportunities and the company expects to grow its international operations by 200 percent over the next five years.

Winner of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup at the Pennsylvania Farm Show for both grape and fruit wines — an unprecedented achieve-ment in a single competition – owners Scott and Mary Ann Bubb have been operating Seven Mountains Wine Cellars since 2009 and note that their winery along the Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail “is just ‘lucky enough’ to be between two of the best places to visit in Pennsylvania, Happy Valley and Big Valley.”

Tamanend Winery, 759 Flory Mill Road, Lancaster, operates under the winemaking direction of Dr. Richard Carey and specializes in classically styled premium wines in their bottled wine category, noting that they always stock “premium sweeter styled wines of exceptional value in our Bag-in-Box group of wines.” The tasting room is open daily on the Mason-Dixon Wine Trail, noon to 5 p.m.

Clover Hill Vineyards & Winery, 9850 Newtown Road, Breinigsville, draws visitors on the Berks County

Wine Trail and to several satellite stores in Berks and Lehigh counties with its premium varietal wines such as Blackberry Sparkler, Holiday and Vignoles, described as exuding “intense and delicate flavors of honey, rose and orange blossom.” The sweet, dessert wine is balanced with flavors that the winery suggests go well with a slice of rich cheesecake. Nestled in the hills of Eastern Pennsylvania, Franklin Hill Winery, 7833 Franklin Hill Road, Bangor, maintains several satellite shops, including one at 2942 Route 61, Tannersville. The owners, who estab-lished the winery in 1981, can remem-ber when customers navigated a mile-long dirt path leading up to the winery, after coming upon a sign that read, “We are in the vineyard. Honk your horn for service.’ Customers were then offered tastings as they enjoyed the working winery ambiance. Today, the same dirt path leads tasters and buyers to the new tasting room on the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail, where the owners hope they are captivated by “old world charm” meeting “modern excellence.”

Accommodating wine purists in the part of the state that Punxsutawney Phil calls home, the Williams family of The Winery at Wilcox tells folks who visit their website (www.wineryatwilcox.net) that their winery opened its doors in Elk County in the summer of 1994, with an inventory of 1100 gallons in eight variet-ies and a tiny tasting bar suitable for five people.

Today, six additions later, The Winery at Wilcox, 1867 Mefferts Run Road, Wilcox, on the Groundhog Wine Trail, has a capacity of nearly 60,000 gallons, with more than 30 selections and has been transformed from one of the state’s smallest wineries to one of the five largest.

The Vineyard at Grandview, 1489 Grandview Road, Mount Joy, is a family owned vineyard located in northwest Lancaster County. The Kennel family has been growing premium vinifera grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay for five years now.

Harvesting elderberries and other berries that grow like wildflowers along the back roads, dad Larry Kennel began making dry fruity wines as a hobby and drew raves from family members. When Larry’s research revealed that the soil in Mount Joy was ideal for growing

grapes, The Vineyard at Grandview was on its way to becoming one of the top wineries along the Mason-Dixon Trail.

Located on a 208-acre farm that’s been in the Thistlewaite family since 1892, Thistlewaite Vineyards, Greene County’s first winery, is a popular stop along the Southwest Passage Trail at 151 Thistlethwaite Lane, Jefferson, that tempts visitors with such wines as Chambourcin, Farmhouse Red, Colonial Red, Scarlet Flair and Blushing Betty in a tasting room made largely of cherry wood.

Hidden Creek Vineyard & Winery, 1670 Carter Road, Laceyville, keeps pro-duction going on the Endless Mountains Wine Trail with its renowned fruit wines such as B.B. Bear, Blossoms, Hedgehog and Sweet Tuscany, a peach-flavored dessert wine, as well as late harvest varieties Steuben and Vidal.

Presque Isle Wine Cellars, 9440 West Main Road, North East, was one of the first Pennsylvania wineries to open since Probibition, and shares with near-by Penn Shore Vineyards on the Lake Erie Wine Trail the distinction of being the first Pennsylvania Limited (Farm) Wineries, both having been licensed on the same day in September 1969.

Nestled along the Hershey-Harrisburg Wine Country Trail, Buddy Boy Winery & Vineyard, 111 Barnett Drive, Duncannon, began as an apple orchard in Perry County in 1964, pro-ducing Marlin Woodward’s famous apple cider.
