Changes that P4 students need to manage

• Matters relating to personal physiological changes

• Matters relating to their relationship with peers

• Higher academic demands along with cognitive development

(content coverage, conceptual understanding, length of assessmentpapers & questions of higher order thinking)

Students need to:

• be disciplined and stay focused over a longer time span

• Have social emotional competencies to deal with the challenges

1. Providing an array of experiences that engage every aspect of the child - the head, heart and hands

• Some are designed to help understand and stretch a student’s strengths and his knowledge ;

• Some are aimed at building the right values ;

• Some are meant to help a child discover and build on his interests. The examinations and PSLE is just one of these many, varied experiences –spread over 6 years of primary school education– that enable your child to understand who he is, and grow into a confident person, who owns his learning and is ready to contribute to our shared future.

Subject-based Banding (SBB)

Page 24: P4 Parents’ Engagement Session 1 February 2019 · Parental Choice at the End of P4 •Parental option is given at the end of P4 •Parents will make decision on the subject combination

What is Subject-Based Banding (PRI)?•Provides greater flexibility for your child by offering himthe option of a combination of standard and foundationsubjects, depending on his strengths.

•Allows your child to focus on and stretch his potential inthe subjects that he is strong in while building up thefundamentals in the subjects that he needs moresupport in. (The intent for SBB is not for offering softeroptions)

Note: Enabling Lifelong Learning

Terms Used and Abbreviations

• Standard Subject (S)• A subject that is pitched at the level of the previous EM2 level

• Foundation Subject (F)• A subject that is pitched at the level of the previous EM3 level

• Higher Mother Tongue (H)• H subjects are meant for pupils who are able to manage

English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue very well

School Considerations

• Performance at P4

• Past performance at P1-P3

• Recommendations by form and subject teachers

Note :

• SBB is not about giving students an Easy Option hence Standard subjects are offered to majority of students. Offering subjects at Standard level for certain weaker students at end of P4 is not a disadvantage.

P4 MT Progression to P5 HMT

P5 MT

• Oral, Listening & Reading Comprehension skills

• Composition

• Language Use & Comprehension

P5 HMT

• Composition

• Written comprehension paper

HMT pupils sit for 2 subjects assessment papers – MT & HMT

Page 31: P4 Parents’ Engagement Session 1 February 2019 · Parental Choice at the End of P4 •Parental option is given at the end of P4 •Parents will make decision on the subject combination

Differences between HMT and MT subjects Does HMT helps my child to perform better in MT examinations?

• MT & HMT are 2 separate subjects• Demands are different

• Examination formats are totally different

• Example:

• P5 MT Composition – Choice of picture composition and topic

• P5 HMT Composition – Choice of topic & continuous writing

• HMT focuses on competency in writing skills

Page 32: P4 Parents’ Engagement Session 1 February 2019 · Parental Choice at the End of P4 •Parental option is given at the end of P4 •Parents will make decision on the subject combination

Other Considerations for taking HCL/HML

• Stretching the students is important, but must not cause distress to students

• Priority is still on regular curriculum

• Other commitments are to be considered

• Holistic education and overall well-being of the students must not be compromised

Page 33: P4 Parents’ Engagement Session 1 February 2019 · Parental Choice at the End of P4 •Parental option is given at the end of P4 •Parents will make decision on the subject combination

How will classes be allocated in P5?

• First cut allocation into P5 classes will be based on Eng, Maths and Science results.

• Mother Tongue (HCL/HML/CL/ML) groupings will be done separately, as students doing HCL/HML may be grouped differently.

Page 34: P4 Parents’ Engagement Session 1 February 2019 · Parental Choice at the End of P4 •Parental option is given at the end of P4 •Parents will make decision on the subject combination

How are students allocated to P5 classes at the end of the year?General Guidelines

• *Classes will be organised into broad ability bands:

• Classes in each colour band will have pupils with similar/close abilities

• Maximum of 40 pupils per class

• Overall performance in E, M & S will be considered first

• Mother Tongue will be grouped differently

• Movement from P5 to P6 will be based on the child’s performance in accordance to SBB Guidelines

Progression to P5

As an enhancement to providing a Student-Centric, Values-Driven

Education, the school will continue to organise P5 classes according to

broad ability banding.

The numbering/naming of the classes may not follow any particular

order.

The school would like to work with parents in looking at each child

individually, recognise his/her strengths and weaknesses to develop his/her

potential and at the same time enhance character development.

Page 36: P4 Parents’ Engagement Session 1 February 2019 · Parental Choice at the End of P4 •Parental option is given at the end of P4 •Parents will make decision on the subject combination

Parental Choice at the End of P4

• Parental option is given at the end of P4

• Parents will make decision on the subject combination their child starting with school’s recommendation

• Once parents have selected a combination, pupil will have to take the combination for at least a year.

• Final Decision by School at the End of P5

Page 37: P4 Parents’ Engagement Session 1 February 2019 · Parental Choice at the End of P4 •Parental option is given at the end of P4 •Parents will make decision on the subject combination

PSLE 2021

• This cohort will be sitting for the new PSLE in 2021.

• Changes to the scoring scoring system.• From T-score to wider scoring bands

• Scores to reflect child’s own performance

• There is no change to the format and demand of the PSLE papers.

• The school will provide support to our students to understand the changes, and work together with them so that they do their best, each in their own way.
