Its Caribbean light and warmth, its
welcoming people, and its historic
monuments, are only some of the
assets that make Cartagena de Indias
a magical place to visit. Its versatile
charm, both inside and outside its
walled city, has made it the source of
inspiration to poets, writers and artists
alike, as well as a thriving global
tourist destination.

For nearly thirteen seasons, the
Cartagena International Music Festival
has become the meeting point for world-
acclaimed interpreters of classical
and traditional music, especially from
Europe and Latin America, the two
world regions that mainly influence
our identity.
Distinctively, every year the Festival
centers on a particular theme,
celebrating a key aspect in the history
of music from a current and innovative
perspective.
Altogether, the Festival aims for
audiences to enjoy while taking
away knowledge, by also attending
conversations about music, and
instruments and art exhibits, among
others, in the unique setting that
Cartagena de Indias provides.

Numbers, Sounds, Music
CELESTIALHARMONYThe Festival’s 2019 season will
be dedicated to the relationship
between music and the sciences. From
Pythagoras’ theories, establishing a
numerical relationship among sounds,
to the notions of astronomy applied to
the symphonic music of Gustav Holst,
these two ways of seeing the world have
been linked in many moments in time.
A central figure will be Johann
Sebastian Bach, whose works span from
a deep view of the link between music
and the celestial to more structured
pieces such as The Musical Offering,
Goldberg Variations, and The Well-
Tempered Clavier, among others.
Likewise, the Festival will include a
view into the music and interpreters of
Latin America, in a concert series that
has become an audience favorite.

As a significant complement to the
program, the Festival aims to present Così
fan tutte, one of Mozart’s opera buffa,
premiered in 1790. In coproduction
with Italy’s Spoleto Festival dei 2Mondi,
it will host specialized artists who will
give life to this entertaining story about
the entanglements between two couples.

and Francesca Lo Schiavo (Academy
Award winners)

TEATRO ADOLFO MEJÍA
Declared a national monument,
this theater is considered one of the
most beautiful concert halls in Latin
America. Built in 1911 and renovated
in 1998, the theatre preserves the
façade of an older era with its elegant
staircases and Italian marble sculptures.
The ceiling was painted by Colombian
artist Enrique Grau (1920-2004).

CAPILLA SOFITELLEGEND SANTA CLARA
Founded in 1617, this former convent
has been beautifully restored and
transformed into the Sofitel Legend
Santa Clara. In the restoration much
of the original walls of the convent
were maintained and the rich colonial
architectural style that marked its
history was preserved. Concerts are
held in the mystical “Cloister of the
Clarisse.”

Located in what was the first convent to
exist in Cartagena de Indias, the chapel
was built in the 17th century in honor
of Saint Teresa of Ávila and the order
of the Carmelite nuns. Currently, it
belongs to the Hotel Charleston Santa

Cartagena has been a vibrant port
for centuries. Today it continues
to be a great Caribbean logistics
center, servicing major shipping lines
worldwide through connections to
more than 432 ports in 114 countries.
Concerts take place on the massive
loading dock.
The Convention Center was built
in 1980 of coralline stone, the same
material used on the colonial buildings
in the historic center. It is used for
conferences, music shows, theatrical
plays and important national and
international events.

Holst’s, The Planets, will be at the

A virtual reality experience around the
music of the Voyager Golden Record,
a disc placed in the two space probes
of 1977’s Voyager space program. It
originally contained the first movement
of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,
precisely recorded by the Philharmonia
Orchestra. A must see!
