The Yankton High SchoolScience Olympiad team wonthe 30th annual South DakotaScience Olympiad State Tour-nament held on the campusof the University of SouthDakota in Vermillion on Satur-day, March 22.
The 15-member team andtwo alternates competed inthe 23 science events in the Cdivision of the Olympiad andwon first place in ten of theevents, second place in sevenevents, third place in fourand fourth place in two of theevents.
YHS teams have won firstplace in 27 of the 30 ScienceOlympiads held in SouthDakota. (The very firstOlympiad was not open tothe C division.)
Winning first place goldmedals in the followingevents were:

• Layne Droppers and SamGusso in Boomilever;
• Mikayla Trenhaile andHeather Hauer in BungeeDrop;
• Sam Gusso and JosephKelly in Compound Machines;

• Layne Droppers andHeather Hauer in ElasticLaunched Glider;
• Alexa Bryan and CodyPerakslis in Forensics;
• Heather Hauer and AlexaBryan in MagLev;

The YHS team won with alow score of 44 points, fol-lowed by Brookings High
School with 49, and DakotaValley High School with 70. Atotal of seven high schoolsparticipated in the ScienceOlympiad C Division. Theteam was coached by RobertMedeck and Brooks Schild.From last November throughthe Olympiad the team hasbeen assisted by many par-ents, community mentors, anddistrict staff.
Because of their outstand-ing performance at the StateScience Olympiad, the team isinvited to represent the Stateof South Dakota at the ScienceOlympiad National Tourna-ment hosted by the Universityof Central Florida in Orlando,Fla., May 15-17.
The Yankton Middle SchoolScience Olympiad team wonthe 30th annual South DakotaScience Olympiad State Tour-nament held on the campus ofthe University of South Dakotain Vermillion on Saturday,March 22.

by Brooks Schild, Cheryl Scha-effer and Tom Merrill. TheYMS Science Olympiad Teamhas been preparing for compe-tition since November.
