Summer Glory

“He has brought us to this place...a landflowing with milk and honey, and now I bringthe first fruits of the soil that you, O Lord, havegiven me” Deut 26v9-10

Here in Chedworth, in theGloucestershire Cotswolds, we areblessed indeed to live in a green andpleasant land – flowing with milk andhoney, as the writer of Deuteronomymight describe it (above) – and, in thesummer months, with trees in full leaf, flowers in full bloom, fruit ripe andvegetables ready to eat, we see ampleevidence of this. Moreover, we havegreat opportunities to enjoy the seasonhere in our village, with our recent OpenGardens and Flower Festival and withthe Chedworth Show still to come.

In Deuteronomy, God bids the peopleof Israel to thank him for the land hehas given them, and to bring the fruitsof the land to him in thankful response. We too should thank God for the beautyand blessings of our locality, andremember that the fruits of our laboursin our gardens reflect his glory, not justour work. After all, God created it all inthe first place, and it is he that has givenus what is ultimately temporarystewardship of the homes, gardens andvillage we enjoy. We should learn to begood stewards.

For, while we enjoy the fruits andflowers of the summer, we do well to

remember that is just a season. Theflowers of the summer will soon goover, and plants will wither as autumndraws on. But, as the prophet Isaiahsays, “the word of our God stands forever”. Summer has beauty and vitality, but it is transient and soon gone. But ifwe trust in God for all we have and holdto the truth of his Gospel, we will knowa deep joy, peace and love, whatever theseason.

I hope that you enjoy summer’s gloryhere in the Cotswolds, or wherever youmight travel to this summer. And I hopethat you will make the most of theopportunity for relaxation and rest thatsummer brings, because this will restoreyour soul and draw you closer to him –and this is a blessing that will still bewith you when the blooms and verdureof the summer are over.

Have a delightful, joyful and relaxingsummer season.

Best wishes,

Stephen

Baptisms

The church has always understood that

the baptism (christening) of a child isthe beginning of a relationship withGod – and with the church.Furthermore, the recent Diocese ofGloucester Vision consultation hasfound most unsolicited enquiries tolocal churches from people in the 30-44 age group (a group that is under-represented in the church) are baptismenquires.

The Diocese has therefore askedparishes to consider how they canimprove their procedures aroundbaptism, and our ministry team hasgiven this careful consideration. Unlikelarger churches, we do not have theresources to do intensivetraining/preparation for familiesseeking baptism, but we would like toget to know families better.

Consequently, we would like to invitefamilies who are resident in the Hill &Valley Parishes to attend a family-styleservice (Family Service, Tea TimeService or Family Communion) in theparishes, if they have not already doneso, prior to the baptism. Please contactStephen if you have any queries.

St. Andrew’s C of E Primary School

It is quite extraordinary how the end ofthe academic year creeps up on us! StAndrew’s has seen many changes withyear with a brand new library andredecoration of many areas inside andout, a fresh approach to teachingEnglish and Maths, new creativecurriculum topic areas, an increase inopportunities for parent involvement intheir child’s learning.. I could go on!

There is so much to celebrate and bethankful for. I am extremely proud ofour excellent staff team and governorswho have worked immensely hard withme as we have navigated our waythrough this year of change at StAndrew’s to provide the very besteducation for the children.

We are already seeing the impact ofmany of these changes and I lookforward to the next year as a time to

embed these changes and refine ourpractise.

Year 6 Cathedral Service andclimbing treat at Far Peak

St Andrew’s was one of 95 schoolsrepresented at the Cathedral earlier thismonth for the annual Cathedral Service, marking a very special time in thesechildren’s lives. Each child was given awooden ‘holding cross’ to keep as a wayof reminding them that even when theyleave Primary School, God stays withthem.

This was followed by an afternoon ofclimbing at the Far Peak Centre – achance for our Year 6s to enjoy timetogether in their final weeks of school.

Chedworth Parish Council

News from our JuneMeeting

Tuns Hill floodingproblem solved?

There was welcome news at our meetingthat the work to replace the blocked pipewhich had caused the flooding problemson Tuns Hill was well underway and dueto be completed shortly.

Getting a resolution to this long-standingproblem has required a huge amount ofeffort. The Parish Council has spentmany hours discussing the issue and, along with our county councillor PaulHodgkinson, putting pressure onhighways to prioritise the work.

In the end, in order to move thingsalong, the Parish Council agreed to payfor investigations to discover exactlywhat was going on under the road.

Once highways had this information itwas clear that a section of pipe neededreplacing and they have decided toreplace the entire length of pipe. We arehopeful that it will once again be able tocope with the volume of water, particularly in the winter

Although the whole council has beeninvolved in discussing the problem, special thanks must go to Matt Fulfordwho has made it his mission to get thework done. He has held meeting withcontractors, doggedly pursued thehighways department to ensure they kepttheir promises and made numerous visitsto the site to check up on things –thanks Matt!

Power supply a new hurdle

The Parish Council is continuing towork with the company hoping to bringmobile coverage to parts of the villagewhich are currently ‘not-spots’ by puttinga pole on Parish Council land.We have held a meeting to discuss howelectricity can be provided to the site andare waiting to hear what the next stepwill be.

Useful guidance fromsurvey results

The results of the Parish Council’s ownsurvey which was attached to the recenthousing survey have now been analysedand are available on our website.

Chedworth Parish CouncilResults show that highways, includinggrass verges and road maintenance, conservation and biodiversity are allmatters which are important to villagersand we can now use the information tohelp us with our decision making in thefuture.

Ian Morgan has spent many hoursworking on the figures and we aregrateful to him for his efforts.

Triangle to get a make-over

The council has made a long-termcommitment to tidy the triangle of landat the top of Tuns Hill.

The area has been neglected for manyyears and has been an eyesore in animportant part of the village.

We have agreed a management planwhich it is hoped will eventually restorethe grass and remove the nettles, whiteweed and other weeds.

Sign language

We are going ahead with plans forEmergency signs to place around thevillage when there is urgent parish newsto report.

The recent survey showed that the Hilland Valley is by far the most popularway for villagers to find out what isgoing on, but of course this only works

for providing information on plannedevents or reports of past ones.

Facebook, the Parish Council websiteand Chedworth Chatter are used bysome people to get their news updatesbut the numbers are fairly low.

The new Parish Council signs will be putout only if there is urgent news whichwe need to pass on and will give an briefindication of what the issue is and thenadvise people to contact the council orlook on village social media.

But are you allowed to fly drones?

Here is the answer given byGloucestershire Constabulary who referto the “Ask the Police” website atwww.askthe.police.uk

Drones (unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) are essentially flying robots. Theaircraft can be remotely controlled orcan fly autonomously using inbuiltsoftware controlled flight plans.

Designed for designated purposes bythe military, they are becomingincreasingly popular among members ofthe public.

If you are considering using a drone forrecreational purposes, we would advisethat you consider the guidance below:

● You must not fly the drone above400 feet in altitude or further than

500 metres away from youhorizontally.

● If you wish to fly one that exceedsthe limits above, you will need toseek permission from the CivilAviation Authority.

● Avoid flying it within 150 metres ofa congested area or 50 metres of aperson or vehicle.

● Use your common sense and flysafely - making sure you can see thedrone at all times.

● If you are using one with a camera, make sure you inform people beforeyou start recording and be aware ofyour surroundings.

Misuse of a drone can lead to a criminaloffence being committed.

For any further help on how to use adrone safely and legally, please seedronesafe.uk .

Old Maps and PhotographsIf you like poring over maps (old andnew) and looking at old photographsthen you are in for a treat! Have a lookat www.kypwest.org.uk. It is free(heritage lottery funded). From thehome page click on Gloucestershire andsearch for Chedworth or share yourlocation. Hopefully you will see that Ihave put a photograph of "Old Farm" atCalves Hill. It was easy to do but thedata is not added straight away as it goesthrough a checking process before it isadded (hopefully this reduces thecontent rubbish that so many sitesacquire).

The ability to swap maps is interesting. For example you can have the 1844-188OS and 1894-1903 OS maps side by side

and slide from side to side to see whatthe village was like pre-railway (open thebasemaps tag to see options). I havebeen assured that the 1840 tithe mapand 1803 inclosure maps will be addedby the Gloucestershire archives soon tofurther add interest.

They are very keen for individuals andgroups to add photographs andinformation to this site to make it avaluable source of local historyinformation. This could be aninteresting winter time project. Anyoneinterested?

Your Gardening Tips for July& August 2017

Who knowswhat the weatherwill be in Julyand August! Itshould be warmat least, whichwill help

everyone planning to enter classes ofvegetables and flowers at the ChedworthShow.

● Warm moist weather will bring antsto the surface together with piles ofsoil, if brushing out does not work, nematodes can be very effective ingetting rid of them, if they are anuisance.

● If your lawn looks tired, give it aquick acting feed. Do not use lawnweed killers in dry weather. If it isreally dry and you want be sure to bewatering your lawn sufficiently using asprinkler, once a week, place an openjam-jar on the lawn and leave thesprinkler running for sufficient timefor 13mm (0.5in) of water to collectin the bottom of the jar. This is theoptimum amount to avoid wastingwater, while still wetting the rootssufficiently. Raise the cutters on yourmower in dry weather and in latesummer to prevent the lawn dryingout.

● You may encounter a strange newmildew on your aquilegias, whichdistorts flowers and shows as grey felton the undersides of leaves.Fungicides are not effective, and so

plants must be removed from yourgarden and burnt or sent for recycling…..not on your compost heap!

● Keep removing aphids from rosebuds by hand or wash off with a mildsoap mix. Pinch out and eat the topsof broad beans to avoid black aphidscollecting there.

● Black Spot on roses is common inAugust, but not really treatable at thistime of year. Sweep up dead leavesand burn them.

● August is a good time to applybiological controls for vine weevil.

● Deadhead flowering plants regularlyespecially in high summer.

● Prune wisteria in August.● Lift and pot up rooted strawberry

runners. Take cuttings of patio andcontainer plants ready for next year.

● Clear algae and debris from pondsand keep them topped up.

● Hebes and lavenders can be given alight prune after flowering in August. If, however, you want capture the fullflavour of lavender essential oils forscent or culinary use, cut it when theflashes of the petals are just showing.

● Prune rambling roses once they havefinished flowering.

● Hedges need only a light trim inAugust as they will not grow muchmore once cooler autumn weatherarrives.

● Do not worry by bright green, heavilyarmoured insects on your plants. These are harmless shield bugs.

Happy gardening!

Chedworth Cricket Club

The Higher League BringsMore Challenges

Despite the positive start to this seasonfor Chedworth CC, the last threematches have seen results that have notgone as well as we would have hoped.Consequently, in mid June the team hasslipped into the lower half of theGloucestershire County Cricket League -Division 6. So, at the time of going toprint the Club has played six leaguegames, won two and lost four.

In the most recent game on 10th June,we hosted Bourton Vale 2nd X1, whoscored 229 for 6 wickets in their 45overs. Henry Lait (who stood in forJamie as Captain) and James Larner took2 wickets each. Batting second,Chedworth were all out for 165 from33.1 overs. Chris Miles (41), JamesLarner (33) and Henry Lait (23) wereChedworth's top scorers.Clearly, playing in the higher league thisseason will bring more challenges.

However, this is great experience for theteam and one of the ways for the playersto enjoy playing against higher qualityopposition. We remain optimistic!

The home fixtures at Beech Walk in Julyinclude the Super 8's Tournament onSunday 2nd, two league games againstUpton St Leornards (15th) and Course& Staunton 2nd X1 (29th). We alsoentertain Cheltenham Civil Service onSunday 30th, starting at 2.15pm. Allleague games start at 1.00pm. If youhave the opportunity, please come alongand support your team.

For more up to date information onChedworth CC 's results anddevelopments, please look out forregular reports on Chedworth Chatter.

Maggie’s Poem

My Brass Cleaner

My husband has a hobbyof cleaning up old brass.

He has so many pieces now,not much room for more alas.To the garage now taken over,

no room to put the car.He now does do a stunning job,

they shine like stars afar.New shelves have had to be put up

to hold so many pieces. So many tubes of polish used

for shine that he releases.Charity shops have calls each week

to see what he can find. There are not many pieces now

that he leaves behind. There are a lot of candle sticks,

he has them by the score. Will be no need for electric

if the house is filled with more.I’m glad I am not the cleaner,

a job I am not keen.So thank you Frank for doing that. One can see where you have been!
