FROM OUR RABBI

I think we are all grateful that we can perceive the light at the end of the Pandemic Tunnel.

We hunger to gather safely for in-person family, friends, and communal events. We miss the joy that comes with the hugs and kisses at our simchas and the immense support an embrace provides to us and others at a time of Tzurris.

Our "virtual engagement" was a gift when we had no other choice, but now we can move back to in-person worship and programs. We have been reminded that we can't take anything for granted and must treasure our opportunities to live as a sacred community that can gather at will.

Per state regulations and health guidelines, we no longer require advance reservations for services, and fully-vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks or be assigned to socially-distanced pods in the sanctuary. Those who prefer to wear a mask and sit in an assigned socially-distanced pod, will always be accommodated if advance notice is provided to our office (please contact Gina Cristino at [email protected]).

It will take time to "return to normal" and we will continue to work with our dedicated

medical advisors, along with the appropriate governmental agencies.

Our Judaism has historically survived and thrived because we have always understood the need to adapt to any challenging circumstances effectively. While COVID-19 was a painful curse, we did discover silver-linings that came with the hardships we endured.

As you are comfortable, please join us this summer in-person for a worship service or program. Also, if you are able, let me know if you are free to gather together for coffee so we can personally re-connect before the next academic year begins. I can be reached at [email protected] or 203-542-7150.

As we prepare now for our High Holy Days, let's make sure we emerge from this terrible pandemic stronger and more committed than ever to our familial, communal, and spiritual goals.

Rabbi Mitch

Dear Friends,

Happy start of summer!

As you hopefully saw in our weekly e-bulleti n and recent email communicati ons, Temple Sholom has moved into the next phase of reopening. On June 1st, we removed all pre-registrati on and pod seati ng requirements for the Sanctuary, and made all services available for in-person att endance.

It is exciti ng to move back to a sense of normalcy; one we used to enjoy and maybe even took for granted. It feels good to know we can see our friends and fellow congregants in-person at the Temple and resume congregati ng together as a community. We are so fortunate to have Temple Sholom as a touchstone and anchor in our lives.

For me, the familiarity and spiritual connecti ons to our Jewish Tribe is so meaningful and rewarding. I encourage you to take advantage of in-person off erings and to parti cipate to the fullest, whether

it be prayer and ritual, educati on, social acti on or social-cultural programming. We off er so many ways for you to connect with Judaism. Our talented and dedicated clergy and staff are here to support you.

As always, I remain available to our community and am honored to hold the positi on I do. I am proud of the work we have accomplished in the last year plus, and deeply appreciate the parti cipati on of all of our lay leaders. Thank you also to the many congregants who voted and/or att ended the Annual Meeti ng this year. As shared at the meeti ng, we are a strong and vibrant community who takes meaningful care of our spiritual home so that it is able to support and care for us in our personal ti mes of joy and sorrow.

I wish you all a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing many more people in-person as the year progresses.

B’Shalom

Alexandra Hochman

Owen fi nished 6th grade at Kent Denver School in Denver, Colorado, and att ends Raquett e Lake Boys Camp during the summer. He is passionate about football (real and fantasy), baseball, tennis, and skiing. Owen's connecti on to his friends and family is strong and not being able to see everyone in person due to Covid has been challenging. Owen's mitzvah project was to raise funds for the Food Bank of the Rockies, as he was struck by the fi nancial impact that Covid had in his community.

Children at SMNS were excited to observe the life cycle of ducklings from incubation to hatching in our "hatchery". The ducks, named Huey and Louie, were brought to their forever home at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center once they were a few weeks old.

YAHRZEITS • July–August 2021 • Tammuz–Av–Elul 5781

WHAT IS A YAHRZEIT?Meaning “Time of Year” in Yiddish, this anniversary commemorates the death of a loved one. It is symbolized by the recitation of the Kaddish prayer and reading of the names of those dearly departed in the Temple. At home, a candle is lit on the eve of Yahrzeit to represent the soul and burns for 24 hours. Tzedakah, a Hebrew word for righteousness and signifying charity, is offered to the family in the form of gifts, donations, or simply emotional support. In this way, we remember our beloved. Yahrzeit Candles are available for a small donation in the main Temple office.
