"As you may be aware from news reports there are currently people with mea-
sles (English measles) in the Waikato, Northland, Nelson and Levin regions.
Measles is a highly infectious and serious illness. IF a student or staff member is
diagnosed with measles in your school, other students and staff (teaching, ad-
ministration, sports coaches and any other staff that have face to face contact
with students) will be required to have written evidence that they have either
had two doses of measles vaccine (MMR) after they were 12 months of age or
doctor diagnosed measles. This information can be found in your/your child’s
Wellchild or Plunket book or from a print out from your doctor.
People born before 1 January 1969 are assumed to have immunity to measles
as it was circulating in the community at this time. Anyone who does not have
evidence of measles immunity will be required to stay off school until 14 days
after their contact with the person diagnosed with measles. We also recom-
mend that pupils and staff going on school sports or other trips to regions
where there are measles cases are fully vaccinated against measles.
An information sheet about measles can be found at www.rph.org.nz> Public
health topics/Infectious diseases/Measles".
TO PREPARE for any eventuality please can all parents of year 8 students pro-
vide us with evidence of your child’s MMR/Measles vaccination. Most yr 7 stu-
dents have already provided us with this information, but if you haven't please
do. The information will be held on our student database so that in the event
of an outbreak at SWIS, we will have minimal disruption.
Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

i Luminate
On Friday 13th a dance group called i Luminate came to SWIS. The group was from the United States of America. They had suits on that lit up in the dark. Two kids and our very own Whaea Vanessa were invited up to dance with them. Afterwards was Q & A where we found out more about them and their dance career. Students thought it was cool. Although some say it could have been darker.

Year 7 Vision Screening—Information for parents
Regional Public Health provides a vision screening programme for all Year 7 students.
Vision—Pupils will be advised of results at the time of screening. If further as-
sessment is recommended you will be notified by mail.
Colour Vision—This screening identifies boys with inherited colour defect. If
there is any difficulty with the colour vision test you will be notified by mail.
Children who wear glasses and/or are under professional care and have regu-
lar checks will not require a vision check from our service.
Non-consent—please notify your school if you do not want your child being
screened.
This screening is not a full assessment of your child’s vision. If you have any concerns,
please see an optometrist.
Breakfast Club
The breakfast club is up and running.
Thank you to everyone who donated food and/or equipment. Not
many students are taking us up on breakfast, but on these cold and
wet mornings milo is a big hit.
Donations of Milo gratefully received at the office please.
Thank you in advance.

Squash Every Thursday a group of about 20 kids go down to the Squash courts for around an hour and have a blast. The group gets split into two groups, learners and advanced. The learners go on court one get taught the rules of Squash while the advanced players go on court three and play King of the court. We are very lucky to have the privilege to use the courts and are thankful to Island Bay Squash and tennis for letting us use them.

The 40 hour famine is coming up soon! Students are collecting sponsors one by one with world vision bracelets on their wrists. They are getting ready for the big day. The day when it all happens. The day when they face their challenge. Maybe only eating rice or not talking or maybe giving up some-thing they love, like devices or books. Or maybe they the are just giving up food as a whole. What ever they choose, they will suffer without their everyday needs, they will laugh or if they are not allowed to talk, they will smile, they will have memories that they will keep forever. Good and bad, funny and sad. What ever they do, whatever they choose, they will have the time of their life.
SWIStival A week long celebration of all things SWIS will begin on 9th September with the gala opening of the 2nd annual Art Show. This show is open from Friday night and throughout the weekend with a wide and eclectic range of art, sculpture and artisan jewellery on sale. Thursday 15th September sees our Market evening with a wide range of foods and crafts, all created by SWIS students, for sale. A great chance to take a break from cooking and support SWIS at the same time. Friday the 16th September school will be open for visits from old and young alike. Take a guided tour around our school and a walk down memory lane. Saturday 17th is our 70th Jubilee Ball. A great chance to enjoy fine food and wine, catch up with old friends and dance the night away. Please put these dates into your diaries, and if you know of anyone who might be interested please pass this information on.
40 Hour Famine
South Wellington Intermediate School is participating in the Heart Foundation's
iconic Jump Rope for Heart programme - an exciting physical activity programme
that encourages children to be more active through skipping and learning new
skills.
We're raising vital funds to support the Heart Foundation and continue the Jump
Rope For Heart programme - but we need your help. Please support this im-
portant charity by creating an online fundraising page for your child and sharing it
with your family and friends. With their much-needed donations, you can help
stop people dying prematurely from the country's biggest killer - heart disease.
