It made my day when one of our children said to me “I am so excited!” just before I gave out the Bibles. That afternoon I taught a class about Bible Basics which I plan to do each year. That evening as we shared in a Barbecue Feast and then had our Back to School service I thought, “This is exciting!” Miss Diane (Loyd) and Miss Nancy (Youngs) gave a wonderful presentation about how we learn and the philosophy of our Yellow Balloon Preschool. It was just a great day all day long! We have another great day planned for this Sunday. Bishop Robert Hayes will be preaching at all 3 worship services. He is a gifted preacher and I am excited for all of you to get a chance to hear him and to worship together. I am also excited for our bishop to get to meet you and to see our wonderful new children and youth areas. You may not realize that our church is a bright, shining star for the United Methodist Church. I’m so excited that our bishop will get to experi- ence this for himself this Sunday. I hope that you will be able to be here this Sunday. Some other things that I am excited about for this fall are some short-term studies I will be leading. On Sunday eve- nings I and my wife, Priscilla, are leading a marriage enrichment class titled “I Love You More”. For this class we will be using material written by Les and Leslie Parrot. We have attended a seminar led by them and have studied several of their books for our own personal marriage enrichment. Each class will include a video component and discussion. I will also be leading a study on Wednesday evenings on “The Shack”. This book has generated a lot of discussion in the past year. It deals with hard issues such as the problem of evil. It presents a unique look at the doctrine of the Trin- ity. And it deals with the concepts of heaven, forgiveness and inner healing with a sanctified imagination. While we must remember that it is fiction; it does cause those who read it to wrestle with doctrines and principles of our faith. If you have already read this book you know you would like to be in this discussion group. If you are interested in a book that makes you think and also makes you cry at times, then pick up a copy of The Shack and join us on Wednesday evenings. I’m excited about these new learning opportunities and I hope you are, too! He was elected as a bishop in 2004 and assigned to the Oklahoma area. Bishop Hayes was here 3 years ago when we were celebrating our centennial. After our upstairs area was opened last November many of you asked if we would have the bishop come so that he could see it. After the first of the year our Senior Pastor ex- tended the invitation and August 30 was chosen as the date for him to come. Bishop Hayes is well known for his exceptional preaching ability and is a much sought after speaker. You will not want to miss this Sunday so circle the date and make plans to be in church that Sunday. We would like to have an “Easter attendance” for when our bishop comes!

Did You Know? The large bell in our bell tower has a safety feature? A major concern of a bell maker and the eventual owner of a bell is: How do I protect the bell from cracking?

As we all know, even the Liberty Bell cracked! For this reason, the manufacturer of our church bell had the wisdom and foresight to incorporate into the design a safety feature. In the event that a very enthusiastic ringer swings the bell too vigorously, the safety feature prevents the clapper from striking the bell too forcefully. Unfortunately due to the age of our bell, this safety feature has a little bit too much play in the mechanism. The safety feature continues to work but it can (and has) caught and trapped the clapper. When this happens, the bell will ring but sounds funny. There’s nothing to fear because this is easily corrected. If you would like to have proper bell ringing training, please contact Steven Eddington. After proper training you will be qualified to be put on the bell ringing schedule!

Nursery Council

There will be a nursery council meeting Sunday, September 6th at 12:45 in room 100. Anyone who would like to attend is welcome. We will be ordering lunch so please contact Jennifer Smith if you plan to attend: [email protected]

The UMM will host their monthly breakfast on Saturday, September 5th at 8:30AM. We realize this is a holiday weekend, but we hope you will take the time to come out and

enjoy a time of fellowship with all of the FUMC Men. Bert Abla will be our guest speaker at this breakfast. Bert will be sharing his recent experience of his mis-sion trip to Nicaragua. You won't want to miss the exciting things he has to share with the men. After the breakfast we will also be doing a work pro-ject at the home of an Owasso couple who are experi-encing some very difficult times in their lives. We will be doing yard work, so bring all of your tools, including your chain saws, weed eaters and loppers. We will perform the service project immediately after the breakfast. We look forward to seeing all of you there!

What: Wednesday Morning Ladies Bible Study “Living Free” by Beth Moore $10 (cost of the book) Who: All women of the church are invited When: Wednesday mornings, 9:30am, beginning Sept. 9 Where: Room 101

Disciple Bible Study Our church offers a series of Bible studies under the name “Disciple”. Disciple I is considered to be

the introductory study as it is an overview of the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The other studies called Disciple II, III, and IV follow the same format, but only cover a portion of the Old Testament and a portion of the New Testament. Each class has 32 lessons which means that when we start in mid-September that you will be finished in May with breaks for holidays. Disciple has daily Bible readings and a two-hour class meeting each week. It is an excellent way to become a student of the Bible—a disciple of Jesus Christ.

This year our church is offering the following classes. Please tell the church office which class you

are interested in, and if you need childcare.

Disciple I will be taught by Rev. Larry Atkisson (day TBA). Disciple III will be taught by Chris Tiger on Tuesday nights. Disciple IV will be taught by Taud Boatman on Thursday nights.

Women’s Wednesday Night

Bible Study Our Women’s Friendship Bible Study will be

meeting on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. beginning on Septem-ber 9th. We will be studying the book of Esther. Beth Moore will lead us through the study, “It’s Tough Being a Woman.”

We would like to offer a short term class and a long term class this year. The short term class will meet weekly for about 2 hours with discussion and the video guide. The study will last 10 weeks and conclude before Thanksgiving. The long term class will meet weekly for 20 weeks for 1 hour and conclude before Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Season.

Small group leaders are needed for this study. Please prayerfully consider being a discussion leader (a discussion guide is provided). Let Carri Yount know if you can help in this way.

You may let the office know which class you are interested in. The study guide is $19.00. Contact Carri Yount at 272-6090, or email at [email protected] for more information.

Missions Focus: Exodus House

“I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25:36

Exodus House is a Prison Ministries program that our church in Owasso supports. Exodus House provides housing, counseling, job search assistance, transportation and other services for people newly released from prison. FUMC Owasso furnishes and stocks an Exodus House apartment for a new resident, as well as providing care, support, and friendship for these brothers and sisters in Christ during their stay at Exodus House. Our most recent resident, David Smith, has moved out of Exodus House and is doing very well. He is working, attending Tulsa Welding School, participates regularly in various counseling sessions, and attends Redemption Church regularly. Our apartment is now empty, awaiting a new resident. We think our next resident will be a 32 year old woman, and she is tenta-tively scheduled to be released from prison about September 4th. A part of her program at Exodus House will be to try and re-unite with her children and other family, and we will support her in any way possible. We are currently preparing our apartment for the new resident: cleaning, basic refurbishing, furnishing and resupplying. We are looking for some donations and a few volunteers to help us:

Restock: Some items we still need to furnish/stock the apartment include: Bed Room - Bedding for a double bed (including pillows), Night Stand Cleaning supplies for the whole house Kitchen – Towels, Dish Clothes, Pot Holders, Cutting Board, Garbage Can, Dish Soap, Dish Rack, Pots and

Pans Refresh: Basic cleaning and simple repairs to make the apartment ready to become a home for the new resident Welcome and support for the new resident: Volunteers to help welcome the new resident, provide them with contact

within our congregation, etc. CJAMM provides professional counseling and support, but we can provide friendship and share Christ’s love and grace that we have received!

If you can help with donations or volunteer your time for this program, please contact Duane or Leslie Magnauck at 918-274-8164, or email [email protected].

Do you need relief from fi-nancial stress? On every maga-zine cover and talk show you see people who've never heard about God's plan for their relationship to money. But true hope, joy and financial freedom only come through an understanding of God's principles and a healthy spiritual relationship with money.

It’s Almost Shalom Meal Time Again!

Themes are an easy way to plan and make things fun for everyone. Want to do a Hawaiian theme one night? Have everyone in your group wear their best tropical gear, bring a few decorations, and serve some dishes with pineapple and coconuts! How about a taco buffet? Spaghetti/pasta night? Breakfast for Dinner? This is a great time for fellowship, and why not do it with your church group and have some

fun? If you have any questions, call the church office at 272-5731 or contact Corrina Rob-inson at [email protected]. DATES AVAILABLE: Sept. 16, Dec. 2, and many more after the new year begins - see the church office for the sign-up list!

IMPACT YOUTH

6:15-7:30 PM—Youth Bible Study—Option 1 Begins Wednesday, September 9th

This fall we will be studying a couple of popular books!

The first one we’ll study is The Shack. This book will chal-lenge the way we view God and ourselves. Although a ficti-tious book, it will cause us to stop and

think about many things.

The second book we’ll study is Same

Kind of Different As Me. This is a true story that will challenge how we live and serve. Our hopes are to have a road trip at some point with this book. These books will be available for purchase at a

discounted rate. Discussions led by Carol Cooper & Mike Robinson

Youth Bible Study—6:15-7:30 PM—Option 2 “Life Hurts. God Heals.”

Begins Wed., Sept. 9th

Let’s face it, sometimes LIFE HURTS and we get caught up in habits that are hard to break. If you are dealing with pain (who isn’t) including: addictions, eating disorders, abuse, pornography, drinking, cutting, broken home, low self

esteem, etc. then Life Hurts God Heals is for you.

This class will be offered for High School students and will be led by Gordon and Janice Heard along with Holly

Cinocca and possibly others. If you are familiar with the 12-step program called Celebrate Recovery, then you may understand how LHGH works.

LHGH is an 8-step small group biblical study providing life-long tools to help students heal from their hurts.

“I don’t know about you, but my life hurts. I needed help and Life Hurts God

Heals gave me that help through other people’s support and openness. I am on my way!” —Paul, 17

“The main reason I joined LHGH is because I never have accepted myself. I’ve always thought I wasn’t good enough. I would wonder why God put me here. To get away from the pain, I would eat. Now, I am in Life Hurts God

Heals and receiving steps that I can actually apply to my life to help turn my bad choices into good ones.”

Wednesday Night Bible Study Leader & Assistant needed

for our Kindergarten – 1st Grade Class On Sept 9th we will start our Wednesday Night Bible Studies immediately following the Shalom Meal. This year we have decided to put the Kindergarten and 1st Graders in their own class which will be located in Room 107 (across from the Nursery). The first part of their class time will be shared with the Preschoolers while they learn their songs in the Littlest Lambs Choir and then they will split to their own class for the remainder of the class time to do a short Bible Study. The curriculum will be provided (you do NOT have to start from scratch!). If you are interested in Leading or Assisting in this class, please contact Corrina Robinson at the church office.

Wednesday Evening Activities Start September 9th!

6:00 - 7:00pm - 2nd-5th Grade - Bible Time Quiz Kids (Boys start in MASA, Girls start in Diner - battle begins

in God’s Gym!!)

Bible Time Quiz Kids!

This is a program for children in 2nd through 5th grade that encourages them to learn Bible facts and do

Scripture memory work. It is to help children value and get acquainted with their Bibles and important sto-

ries and truths.

The purpose if this ministry is more than fun and games (although we do have fun and games). The

purpose is that your children would increase in the knowledge of God and His Work.

We motivate memory work by awarding points that are earned for prizes. We use healthy competition

between the Gospel Girls and the Bible Boys as they play various quizzing games. They are awarded points

for attendance and bringing their Bible and memory book. They can also get points for bringing their

friends. Team points are awarded for best singing and best examples of fruit of the spirit. Points are taken

away from a team for misbehavior. We compete, we achieve, and we have fun.

We will give a Bible Time Memory Book to each child registered. (Additional books can be

purchased for $2.00.) In addition we will give each parent an information sheet of how the program works

and how each child can earn individual points.

There will be an awards assembly at the end of the season of team competition. The season starts

on September 9th after the Shalom Meal. The fun and games start at 6:00 and will meet until 7:00.

Come join the fun! For more information contact the church office!

Must See Movies With TaudMust See Movies With TaudMust See Movies With TaudMust See Movies With Taud

In the media and image-driven culture we live in; M.S.M.W.T. looks at

recently released movies that share faith based questions and themes.

This class is taught by our Associate Pastor, Taud Boatman and meets in

the UMC-12 movie theater upstairs on Wednesday evenings from

6-7pm beginning September 9th. Your “homework” each week will

simply be to watch the entire movie on your own and come ready

to discuss at our class times. We will view certain scenes and

clips together on the Big Screen. The Must See Movies for this

class will be…

The Dark Knight – Explores the nature of Good vs. Evil in the world and

in ourselves.

The Bucket List – This movie reminds us to live each moment and each day

as though they may be our last… because that’s the truth.

Evan Almighty – This is a modern day re-telling of the Noah Story and

obedience to God’s calling and direction in our lives.

Wall-E – This is an animated family friendly look at creation and our need

to be good stewards of resources.

FireProof – This movie explores relationships and wants each of us to con-

sider the firefighter’s code; “Don’t leave your partner behind.” Those willing to will be invited to take “The Love Dare” that goes

along with the movie. See You at the Movies !!!

It’s hard to believe that our field will be orange very soon, but it REALLY is just around the corner! We have begun meeting and planning all the fun things that come with the Pumpkin Patch. As always, these events are only made possible by all the Servants in our church, so please consider serving at the patch in one way or another this year.

A Few Highlights of the 2008 Patch:

• Over 2,700 students came through our outdoor classroom • Over $29,000.00 in pumpkins sold • More cars than ever at the car show

• More trunks than ever at the Trunk-or-Treat • Baseball Team helps unload 2 of our trucks

• Around 300 kids came out for both the Fall Carnival and the Trunk-or-Treat (many of them from our community!)

• We were a first place winner of the “Patch Appeal” Award again • Our patch was chosen to be an example for all patches around and all

prospective patches!

What to Look Forward to in 2009: • Car Show, Pumpkin Patch Café & Indian Taco Dinner

on Saturday, October 3rd • Fall Carnival, Safety Fair and Chicken Noodle Dinner

on Saturday, October 10th • Trunk-or-Treat & Glow Fest on Saturday, October 31st

• 3 Trucks of Pumpkins (Wed. Sept. 30th at 5:00 PM; Saturday, Oct. 10th at 9:00 AM; Sunday, Oct. 18th at 1:00 PM)

• LOTS of kids coming to our Outdoor Classroom • Birthday Parties at the Patch

• A Patch-Full of Thanks Dinner in November • And More!!!

With all of this coming up, we need YOUR help—please stop by our Pumpkin Patch table and look for ways to serve. If EVERY family in our church would sign up for one shift to sell pumpkins, we’d have our calendar filled! Remember, ALL proceeds from our pumpkin sales and all our events go to Missions—what a great way to reach out

into our community and further God’s kingdom all at once.

If you have any questions, please call Carol Cooper at 272-5731 or email her at [email protected].
