Volume 13, Issue 127 October 13, 2010 Chris Tiger, Senior Pastor Owasso Observer First United Methodist Church of Owasso A Note From Our Pastor We had a wonderful weekend in the Pumpkin Patch! Big events were held on Saturday with the Fall Carnival and on Sunday with the Run For The Patch. And of course we had our 10th Anniversary Celebration! It was certainly a wonderful time to celebrate the ministry of the Pumpkin Patch. The Pumpkin Patch is a ministry of our church to the community of Owasso and beyond. During the week we have hundreds of children come from all over northeast Oklahoma. Each year we have 2,500-3,000 children experience the Outdoor Classroom and just plain fun in the Pumpkin Patch. On most of the Saturdays in October we schedule big events which reach thousands of people. We host Car Shows, Craft Faires, Fall Carnivals, Safety Fairs, and Trunk or Treat. All of these are offered free of charge to the public. We also have several meals associated with the Patch; including Breakfast Burritos, Chicken Noodles, Indian Tacos, Barbecue, the Pumpkin Patch Café and more - all offered at reasonable prices. We believe that the Pumpkin Patch’s hidden value lies in providing these great events for our community. But of course, we do have pumpkins for sale! This year we are scheduled to have 3 semi-trucks deliv- ering pumpkins. We had a whole truck on September 29, half a truck on October 10 and another half of a truck scheduled for this Saturday, October 16th. Come and help us unload! Last year we sold $36,000 of pumpkins and so far this year we are above last year’s pace. All of this leads to the missional aspect of our Pumpkin Patch. We named our Patch differently from other Pumpkin Patches - it is The Pumpkin Patch For Missions . All of the money raised goes to various missions which we support as a church. These include: the Food Pantry, Christmas Every Day, Youth Force, the Day of Serving, missionaries such as Rich Whetsell in Alaska, Owasso Community Re- sources, Pearl’s Hope, our partnership with Bolivia and many, many more. Our Pumpkin Patch has been recognized by the Pumpkin Patch organization as one of the best among the groups affiliated with their organization. We have won the Pumpkin Patch Appeal Award 4 times. In fact, they asked to use our video as a promotional video from their company. For the last 3 years, Tulsa Kids magazine has listed us as the #1 place for kids in the Tulsa area. Elsewhere in this news- letter you can read the Mayor’s Proclamation about our Pumpkin Patch. We are well known throughout the area as the church with the Pumpkin Patch. How great is it that when people think of our church that they smile? They have so many good family memories gener- ated by our church hosting this month long series of events. As one of our members put it years ago: “I didn’t know so much good could come from a pumpkin!” Yours in Christ, Chris

Taud’s “Loose Ends” Associate Pastor’s Column

In all four of our worship services we are in the midst of preaching a series of messages from the book, “Reclaiming the Wesleyan Tradition.” It has been a great experience so far and both Chris and I have had conversations recently where people are saying things like, “I knew I believed that, but I could never quite put my finger on it. It’s nice to know that the church believes the same thing.” For a very long time there has been a misconception floating around out there that as Methodists, ‘we can believe anything we want to believe.’ I think one of the things this series has done is to take a serious look at some of our core beliefs and values as a people and as a church. Please continue to share your thoughts and the conversations with us. The 11:11 worship service (as well as the 9:40 service,) will certainly miss Jarrod Elmore leading in worship. For the next two Sundays however we are very pleased to have Andy Henson coming to join us and to help lead at 11:11. Many of you may remember Andy from Youth Force 2009: Greater Things - Owasso and from district youth camp at Egan. Andy is currently the director of the Wesley Foundation at NSU in Tahlequah. He is also serving at the conference level in young adult ministries. Andy recently began his studies in seminary and is exploring a calling into ministry. We look forward to worshipping with him once again. You can find him on Facebook and find out more cool stuff about him if you’d like. In the next few weeks we are going to be looking at the spiritual rebirth that takes place when we are “Born Again.” For John Wesley, this came out of the conversation that Jesus had with Nicodemus in John 3 and the Apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 5:17 (one of my personal favorites.) This is a very nice transition into a difficult and often misunderstood doctrine or belief – Sanctification. In his book “United Methodist Beliefs” United Methodist Bishop, Will Willimon writes the fol-lowing: “Sanctification and Christian perfection are the most controversial and contested of United Methodist Beliefs. From the early days of the Methodist movement, most Christians and their churches agreed with us on most matters of belief, but here they parted company. John Wesley believed that God’s grace was so amazing that it was possible for wretched sinners like us to get better, to ‘grow in grace,’ even to be ‘perfected in love.’” Bishop Willimon goes on to say that, “Our relationship with God is not only restored by God’s perfecting grace, but we actually become God’s grace agents of change for the Kingdom through it.” I think this promises to continue to be challenging and thought provoking material. I pray that you would come along on the journey and wrestle with some of these questions as they are being taught and preached about in our Sunday school classes and in our worship services. In HIS Grip <>< Taud

Interested in Investing?

The First United Investors (FUI) is an investment club that meets at the church the second Thursday of each month. The club is not officially a part of the Ministry of the Church, but does limit its membership to individuals and couples who attend this Church. The club currently consists of eight individual and couples with varying interest, who join together on a monthly basis to evaluate stocks, manage a portfolio and learn more about investing in the stock market. The club is interested in adding up to five new members over the next few months. Any individual or couple, regardless of their investment expertise, interested in learning more about evaluating companies and investing in the stock market are invited to contact one of the following to learn more about the club: Allen Noland, Kevin Felts, Jim Zink, Paul Shireman, Rich or Jan Epperson, Marvin Williams, Dorothy Inglima or Bob Pearcy. See the church calendar for meeting dates. Come join us!

“Hurting Hearts… Healing Hearts” to Begin Meeting in November

Everyone has hurts at some point in their life. These can be caused by the death of someone close i.e.: a spouse, a family member, a friend, etc. We can experience hurts through a divorce, a job loss, a goal not be-ing fulfilled, a move, the death of a pet, a loss of a friendship, health concerns, or the loss of independence due to an illness. If you have hurts in your heart, this new group can help you as you begin to heal. We will remind our-selves that we do not need to feel alone or isolated in our hurting. We will support and care for one another. We will meet at the church in the lodge area upstairs on the first Thursday of every month. Anyone that is hurting is welcome to attend. Our first meeting will be on Thursday evening, November 4th, 2010 at 7:00 pm. Meetings will last approximately an hour and a half. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bobbie Sue Doye at 272-5435 or Taud Boatman at 272-5731. If your heart is hurting, we hope to see you there. And remember – you are not alone!

Run For The Patch News

We would like to thank everyone that participated and helped with the Run For The Patch on

10-10-10. It was an exciting day. We had great weather for the races, a little hot for the 5K

and then when the 10K started the cool wind blew in. We had 82 people that participated in

the Fun Run, 141 in the 5K and 85 for the 10K. We don’t know how much money we raised

for our mission projects yet, but will have a report later, hopefully in the next newsletter.

Thanks again for your participation and making this event successful.

Not a Member of the Church? Want to Be? Come to our Becomers Class!

Are you interested in “becoming” a member of this church? If so, please come to the Becomers Class this Sunday, October 17th at 3:00pm. Becoming a member is only part of what God wants you to become. John 1:12 has a wonderful promise for us - “But to all who receive him, who be-lieved in his name, he gave power to become children of God.” Our pastors will be leading this class and want to explore with you what God is wanting you to become. Childcare is provided for this class. If you are interested in this class please contact the church at 272-5731 or [email protected] if you are planning on attending or if you have any questions.

Trailblazers News

Please plan on joining us on Thursday, October 28th as we travel to Claremore, Oklahoma for a guided tour of the “Belvidere Mansion” and lunch afterwards in their beautiful “Tea Room” (cost $10 per person). Following are a few facts about this Victorian mansion. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built circa 1902, just before statehood. John M. Bayless brought his wife Mary and their seven children to the Indian Territory from Cassville, Missouri in 1901. By 1902, Bayless began building his castle-like mansion but died in 1907, before the it was completed. Mary Bayless and her six living children finished the mansion after John's death and continued to reside there until 1919. All of the children lived their lives in Claremore. The house is brick with tile roof and has four towers, one on each corner. A portico on the north side provided cover for the guest carriages. A large porch covers the front entrance with matching balcony directly above. Much of the trim and woodwork used in the mansion were brought from the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. A wide entry L-shaped hall meets the carriage entrance to form a gathering place. The floor is covered in tile laid by a man from Italy. The walls are wainscoted marble and pressed-tin. Sliding pocket doors and fireplaces accent several rooms. John Bayless also built a three-story Opera House, the Sequoyah Hotel, and an athletic building with an indoor swimming pool. Only the Belvidere mansion remains today. The building changed hands several times and in the 1930’s was sold to an investor who turned it into apartments. Like other historic structures that become rentals, the mansion deteriorated over the years until it was purchased by the Rogers County Historical Society in 1991. Today, the beautiful old building has been restored to its former glory and is fitted with period furnishings. But take note, there are rumors that the spirits of John Bayless and his family haunt this building. Psychics have "seen” children playing, as well as "meeting” a distressed John Bayless, and a distraught young woman who allegedly committed suicide when she lived in the building as a tenant in the 1940’s.

We will be leaving from the church at 9:30am!

Staff News

After discussion, reflection and prayer our church and Jarrod Elmore have mutually agreed that Jarrod’s employment at our church will end effective immediately. Jarrod’s ability to commit his time to our church has and will become increasingly challenging as he invests his time, money and talents into expanding his business, “Bite Size Broadway” in Bartles-ville. This commitment along with his leading worship at his father’s church on Wednesday evenings has led us to this painful decision. This is certainly a loss to Jarrod and our church. We wish him well on his decision to grow his business as he does whatever is necessary to turn his dream into reality. We are beginning a search process for a new Contemporary Worship Leader for our 9:40 a.m. and 11:11 a.m. worship services. We welcome your prayers for Jarrod and our church.

It’s Nice To Be Appreciated

I would like to thank the UMW for honoring me as Woman of the Year. I am proud to be a part of such a

wonderful organization and all they do to support missions in our community and beyond.

If you are a woman in our church and you have not attended UMW I would strongly urge you to join a

Circle. You don't know what you are missing by not being a part of this wonderful

organization!

Thanks again and God Bless!

Thank you Church Family The annual Sunday Brunch to benefit the Brandon Magalassi Memorial Scholarship Foundation was a suc-cess! Through your generous donations, we raised over $1,800 for scholarships for Owasso area high school students. Thank you for your interest in our foundation and our efforts to raise awareness about teenage sui-cide through scholarship and education. We would also like to thank all who worked hard to bring the brunch together, especially the New Life Sunday School class, Carol Cooper, Dorothy Inglima, Judy Kim-ball, Juanita Ramsey and all the ladies who cooked the scrumptious casseroles. On Sunday, October 3rd, IMPACT Youth headed out into the community to take the challenge...Which is better, CherryBerry or Orange Leaf. They ate at both

places and filled out a form giving their opinions about which Frozen Yogurt place was the place to go.

A few facts: Cherry Berry has 14 Flavors of Frozen Yogurt, 40 topping choices and it costs $0.39/ounce (CherryBerry is

located in Smith Farm near Ross and the US Cellular Store) Orange Leaf has 16 Flavors of Frozen Yogurt, 35 topping choices and it costs $0.33/ounce (Orange Leaf is

located in the Neighborhood Market shopping center at 86th and 129th)

Below is the rate (on a scale of 1-10) of each place and what we rated them on…

As you can tell, Orange Leaf took the higher score, but all of us really enjoyed eating at both places! We had a great time and it’s a lot of fun for Owasso to host 2 Frozen Yogurt places that are really quite good. We do

want to give a shout out to our very own Kyle Lewis and Garrett Schmall who work at Orange Leaf and were great to us while we were there—they even came around and cleaned up after us. Thanks guys!

October 31st - Halloween Night

Though we are currently in the middle of our month long Pumpkin Patch, we would like to plan the final event we host for our community and we need YOUR help!

We are expecting to have lots of kids and families out for our Trunk-or-Treat, so if you’re available, please bring your trunk and some candy for a fun filled evening!

This year we are also expanding our event inside and would like to have hosts to match

our theme rooms upstairs to hand out candy and invite the public to see our amazing 2nd floor.

• Sunday, October 31st • Free Hot Dogs & Hot Chocolate

• · Bring your trunks to set up at 5:00 PM (you might want a lawn chair, too) • Trunk or Treat begins at 6:00 PM

• No Children Necessary to join the Fun!

Celebrating 10 Years of The Pumpkin Patch

On Sunday, 10-10-10, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary of our Pumpkin Patch for Missions. It was a BEAU-TIFUL fall afternoon and we had hundreds of people turn up for the Run and the 10th Anniversary Dinner and Celebration. We collected money for 2 missions to celebrate 10-10-10. The first is Imagine No Malaria and we

are excited to report that we will be able to provide 150 nets so far! The second is Owasso Community Re-sources. We raised $1,176.75 this weekend for OCR—our church will match $1,000 and a donor in the com-

munity will match our gift, giving OCR a total of $4,353.50!!!

THANK YOU to all of you who served in one way or another. We truly could not have done this without you and your willing hearts. Those of you who showed up to unload pumpkins, but found that was done—thank

you for being willing to help move tables and chairs. Our church and property was full of hustle and bustle as everything got set up and ready for the afternoon’s events. Thanks to all who stepped up and help set up the

meal and keep the trays filled and hungry people satisfied. A HUGE thank you to Guy Brunson and Brad Rustan for making the wonderful Barbecue that fed somewhere around 500 people. We have heard great com-ments about the wonderful barbecue. And thanks to all those who provided cakes and desserts. It was a great

way to end a great meal! Please check out the wonderful photo albums Nancy Youngs has put together to show our patch over the past 10 years...these will be out in the Narthex on Sunday morning for you to enjoy.

It is hard to believe we have been hosting our Pumpkin Patch for 10 years now...it has been a joy reminiscing about years gone by and remembering what our patch was like back in 2001. Please enjoy reading some of

these DID YOU KNOW memories!

DID YOU KNOW???

• The Pumpkin Patch for Missions has grown from a small patch of around 1000 pumpkins (where our chapel parking lots is today) to what you see today

• The Pumpkin Patch for Missions has had over 50,000 pumpkins come through the patch since 2001

• We moved the Patch from where the chapel parking lot is now to the Pavilion and pond in 2003

• When we moved the Patch, Carol and Nancy walked around the Pavilion trying to figure out HOW ON EARTH we could “hide” most of the Pavilion because we could not figure out how we’d fill that entire space!

Today we’d like about 3 pavilions to use!

• Our “left over” pumpkins have gone to the zoo, a pig farmer, horse farms, and been left on peoples door steps to use for food (much like Santa leaves gifts for us on Christmas Morning)

• NHS Students from Owasso come out almost every evening of the Patch to tip pumpkins and help keep them

from rotting

• It takes hundreds of servants to make the Patch possible...thanks to all who serve in one capacity or another.

• Our Patch has hosted a marriage proposal, a wedding and this past weekend beautiful photos for the Vice wedding

• The Pumpkin Patch USA has shared about our patch with MANY other patches and places wanting to do articles about Pumpkin Patches...they tell others that if they want to know how to run a Pumpkin Patch, then call us up, because ours is the place to learn from. They’ve even told us that in their offices, all of them have

said if they could visit one patch, it would be Owasso FUMC!

• Some of the Missions our Patch has supported include: Owasso Community Resources, Imagine No Malaria, Meals on Wheels, Youth Force, Christmas Everyday Fund,

Food Pantry, Bit by Bit, Junior Achievement, Pregnancy Resource Center of Owasso, Youth Services of Tulsa, Engineers in Action and More.

Pumpkin Patch Outdoor Classroom

We need servants to work different rotations in the outdoor class-room, story-telling, pumpkin science, pumpkin math, maze fun, etc. We currently have every single day in October booked with

different school groups ranging from Pre-school through 5th

Grade, so if you are available anytime between 9am and 3:00pm or evenings for scout groups,

please see the schedule in the church hallway outside the office. You may also contact Corrina Robinson at 272-5731 or

[email protected], or Dana McConnell at 978-6946 or [email protected], for the schedule needs. It is really a lot of fun and a great way to reach out and serve our community. Last year over

2,800 students visited the Pumpkin Patch with their school group. We ex-pect to have about the same again this year, so lots of help is needed.

Thanks for all your help!
