GENERAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the Matabitchuan area are all pre-Cambrian in age and similar

in most respects to those found at Cobalt, South Lorrain, Gowganda, and else where in northeastern Ontario. In parts of the area, however, earth movements of considerable magnitude locally have disturbed the Cobalt series to such an extent that its members present a general appearance somewhat different from that of the same group of rocks in the type areas mentioned above. The principal regions of disturbance are situated on the southern edge of the area to the south of the Matabitchuan river and Rabbit lake.

In the following table, the rocks are classified according to their relative age relationships, the oldest being placed at the bottom.

Since the diabase intrusions have followed certain definite directions corre sponding to the lines of regional weakness in the older rocks, it is evident that the movements which produced these lines preceded the intrusion of the diabase. Later movements have no doubt taken place since Keweenawan times along

the pre-existing lines of disturbance. Evidence to support this supposition is found on McDonald lake, where a diabase mass extending in a northeast-south west direction is cut through by the lake which trends northwest-southeast. The brecciated character of the diabase suggests faulting. Similar conditions occur in the southeast bay of Rabbit lake and on the Matabitchuan river near the outlet of Lorrain creek.
