"Ovidius" University of Constantza was set up by gov- ernmental decision, on the 7-th of March 1990. This young University however prides itself on continuing fifty years of hign- er education in this scenic area of Dobrudja. The University of Constantza,
settled on the Black Sea coast; ranks as one of the major institu-
tions of higher education in Romania and it has known spec- tacular development. It is com- plex educational institution, a modern university that has established a national and inter- national reputation for its achievements. It counts about 20,000 stu-
dents and consists of 15 facul- ties, 62 specializations, master
studies for 54 specializations, and 7 PHD programs.
The teaching staff members more than 1,315 specialists 100 full professors, 250 associate professors, 440 lecturers, 360 assistant professors and 150 junior assistant professors, and 15 researchers. The University is provided

with fully equipped buildings for laboratories, classrooms, auti- doriums, multimedia rooms and other training rooms, covering 100,000 square meters. It also owns a central library
with over one million books and periodicals, 10 reading rooms with more than 500 seats in an area of more than 10,000 meters. The network of branch- es includes 4 faculty libraries. New computer networks have been established for the benefit of the students and academics. Other important facilities are
computing services, language centers and "Ovidius" University Press, a publishing house which prints university treaties and research work of teachig staff. It also prints the "Annals of Constantza University" contain- ing scientific papers in different fields such as biology, physics,
chemistry, literature and linguis- tics, medical, economic sci- ences, mathematics, history, geography, informatics, theolo- gy, agriculture, engineering. The University has 5 student
hostels with more than 1,500 places, restaurants, student’s clubs offering plenty of recre- ational and cultural facilities. At the University’s sports club,
located on the Mamaia Lake, students can use about 10 hectares of sports fields for their training: football and athletics fields, volleyball, handball, bas- ketball, tennis courts, rooms for physical fitness and rhythmic gymnastics, a swimming pool, saunas, body-building rooms, a modern and complex nautical club for rowing and yachting, etc. As partner in the Erasmus-

"Ovidius" University secures study mobility for students and staff with over 50 Universities from Europe, U.S.A., Latin America and Asia. In this respect, an instrument facilitat- ing mobility is the European sys- tem of transfer credits adopted in the 1998-1999 academic year. The special geographical
location of Constantza, its status as major Black Sea port and European historical and tourist centre, offer "Ovidius" University the chance of rapid develop- ment. Research work is being suc-
cessfully carried in all major fields of science.7

The capital of the historical province of Dobrudja (an area lying between the Danube and the Black Sea) and the second largest city of Romania, Constanta has a long history.
Greek sailors form Milet set- tled here in the 6th century B.C. calling the place Tomis.
The colony particularly thrived under the Roman rule, beginning with the 1st century B.C.
The vestiges of the Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine civ- ilizations have been of particular interest for Romanian and foreign historians and archeologists.
W ith a population of over 350,000 inhabitants, Constanta is located about 130 kilometers away from the Danube Delta, and 225 kilometers away from Bucharest. It has a six-hour direct maritime route to Istanbul (600 km by road).
Constanta has temperate cli- mate with hot summers and cold winters. The average annual tem-
perature is approximately 11o
Celsius. Constantas a long tradition
of multiethnic peaceful coexis- tence: its cosmopolitan and open character make it suitable for international contacts and cooperation.

"Ovidius" University of Constanta was granted a charter by to the Romanian Government’s decision, on of March 7, 1990. This is one young and modern University which howev- er has a long history and an experi- ence of about 50 years of high educa- tion in this beautiful area of our coun- try, Dobrogea.
Constanta University, settled on the Black Sea coast, is one of the most important institutions of higher education in our country and it has known spectacular post-revolution development.
"Ovidius" University of Constanta is a complex educational institution, a modern university that has estab- lished a national and international rep- utation for its achievements.
It counts about 20,000 students and consists of 15 faculties, 62 spe- cializations, master studies for 54 specializations, and 7 PHD pro- grams.
There are also more than 700 members on the teaching staff.
The university has buildings with laboratories, classrooms, multimedia rooms and other training rooms, cove- ring 63,500 square meters.
It also has a central library with more than one million books and peri- odicals, 4 reading rooms with more than 400 places, in an area of more than 5,000 square meters.
