Digital Titles & How To Tell the Difference Between the Formats:

The best way to avoid getting audiobook titles when you want eBooks (or vise versa) is to use the ADVANCED SEARCH tab (far left of screen) to limit your search to your desired format. To get there, go to the MD Digital eLibrary site at: (http://maryland.lib.overdrive.com). First, login to your account by clicking the LOGIN tab (at the top right side of the page). Click the arrow that says, “Select Library” and choose Baltimore County then type in your library card number next to the box labeled “Library card number:” to login to your account.

You will be presented with a list of titles that come in the format you choose BUT there most likely will still be other formats listed, too. So you MUST pay close attention to finding the Kindle icon and clicking the ADD TO CART or PLACE HOLD button on the corresponding line with the Kindle icon.

If you do not use the Advanced Search feature then you have even more choices to weed out as all the audiobook formats will also be listed. There is another way to make sure you get your desired format of eBook (and not audiobooks) when browsing for titles. Look for the icons under each title. When you find a title of interest be sure to notice the icons below the title. If you see a row of icons under the title like the ones shown below, then those are all audiobooks. If you want eBooks, then you will want to avoid those titles displaying the audiobook icons.

AUDIOBOOKS LOOK LIKE THE ONES BELOW. YOU WILL WANT TO AVOID THESE IF YOU WANT EBOOKS:

If you see icons like the ones below (Kindle, Adobe EPUB and Adobe PDF), those are eBooks.

For Apple iOS, Android, NOOK and Sony devices:

If you have one of the above devices, you will generally *not* want to select Kindle titles unless you have the Kindle Reading App. on your device. If you do not have the Kindle Reading App. on your device then you will want to choose only the titles that are in Adobe EPUB or Adobe PDF format. Some of these devices will allow you to use MP3 audiobooks as well, but not WMA audiobooks. WMA’s only work on Windows computers and devices or smartphones. One exception is that some WMA’s can be transferred from a Windows computer (via USB cable) to an iOS devices (iPad or iPhone) if you have all the needed software (OverDrive Media Console, Windows Media Player & iTunes) on your computer and the needed app. (OverDrive Media Console App. for iOS) downloaded onto your iOS device.

For Kindle devices and the Kindle Reading App:

If you have a Kindle device or the Kindle Reading App, you will want to select only Kindle titles.

Caution Kindle Users – Some Kindle Titles Are Restricted: Some Kindle titles are restricted and cannot be downloaded wirelessly or to the Kindle Reading App. If you want to avoid these titles then look for and only check out those Kindle titles which state, “Use on: Kindles and free Kindle apps. Kindle titles that are restricted, which cannot be downloaded to the Reading App. and cannot be downloaded wirelessly will look like the one pictured below.

These restricted Kindle titles will state (in red text) “Use on: Kindle devices via USB only” and you may want to avoid these if you do not wish to have to first download the title to your computer, then connect your Kindle device to your computer and transfer the title to your Kindle. Restricted Kindle titles cannot be used on the Kindle Reading App.

Non-restricted Kindle titles look like the one below. These can be downloaded wirelessly toy our Kindle device and/or to the Kindle Reading app. Most Kindle users prefer these titles as they are easier to download to your device or Reading App.
