Opportunities for Dec. 19th - Jan. 12 th, 2019
Give Erma Bombeck, sorely
missed, credit for this one.
She wrote of standing in line at
her post office ten days before
Christmas. As usual, no one was
smiling; it was like a lower back
pain clinic. Then a lady with a big
smile on her face walked in,
weighed down with boxes for
mailing. She held the door open
for her three little girls who filed
in, each one carrying a package.
She bounded over to a man
standing by a counter pasting on
stamps and asked, “Are you a
carrier?”
“Of what?” he snapped.
Another one in line said, “To the
back of the line, lady!”
Her eyes fairly danced with
excitement as she announced to
no one in particular, “It certainly
is a nice day, and just think, girls,
Christmas is only one week
away.”
“Will Granddad get his presents?”
asked one child.
“Of course, he will,” said the
mother. “On Christmas Eve he’ll
be sitting around the fire, the
doorbell will ring and a postman
will knock on the door and say
with a big smile, “Merry Christ-
mas from your family in Arizona.”
Every eye in the place turned to
stare at this cross between Mary
Poppins and Tiny Tim.
Finally, she got to the head of the
line. “When will Dad get these
packages?” she asked.
The clerk shrugged. “Depends.
Maybe by New Year’s…or we
could get ‘em there in one day.”
“One day would be wonderful!”
“It’ll cost you,” he said, scribbling
down some figures, “$45.83.”
The woman hesitated, then
picked out one box and said,
“This one must get there by
Christmas Day, it’s my father’s
birthday.”
The clerk shook his head and said,
“This guy’s a loser. Imagine
having a birthday on Christmas.
One present fits all! Thank God, I
don’t know of anyone born on
Christmas Day.”
The man behind Erma whispered
loudly, “Thank God, I do.”
Erma signed off by saying, “There
were smiles yesterday in the U.S.
post office.”
Thank God for Erma and for all
those who have brought us
smiles, good memories, and
reasons to look for the best. And,
if this season brings sadness to
you for ones you’ve lost, I hope
you will be able to remember
Who has come to you, never to
leave you alone. Joy to the world,
friend, the Lord has come!

Dear Seniors,
Christmas is almost here! It means so much to different generations. ... Our grandchildren bounce around with excitement at all the presents under the tree. ... Our children are busy helping in the kitchen pre-paring meals and general cleanup, ... Phil & I just sit back and watch and enjoy!
The best part is when we all gather around the tree for Grandpa to read the Christ-mas Story from Luke. It
brings our focus back to the true meaning of Christmas.
Looking into the new year:
• Wednesday, Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30 at 9:30 am – Bible Study : “Marks of a Healthy Church” facilitated by Jim Young -Study Guides available the first session
• Friday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 pm – Movie Night & Supper
• Thursday, Jan. 17 at 10 am – Miss Lacys, in Sanford, for Lunch
• Monday, Jan. 28 at 11:30 am – NBC Covered Dish Lunch & Program
Merry Christmas,
Phyllis
What does the Bible say about Sunday School
Colossians 2:1-23
For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those
at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their
hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the
riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's
mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom
and knowledge. I say this in order that no one may delude you with
plausible arguments. For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in
spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in
Christ.
