ALL: We will rejoice and be glad in it.

♦THE OPENING PRAYER .............................................................................. Brenda Brown, Liturgist

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Spoken in Unison)

Strong Savior, we join voices in praise to you, gladly proclaiming you as our King. Yet we have not followed your rule. We seek more to fulfill our own desires than to accomplish your will, we strive more to extend our influence than to seek your kingdom. Forgive us for saying one thing, while living another. Help us by your Spirit to walk in your way of the cross, so that we would love God with all our hearts and our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.

THE SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Concluding with the Kyrie)

THE ASSURANCE OF GOD’S FORGIVENESS

THE GLORIA NO. 581: “Glory Be to the Father” ......................................................... GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, amen.

♦THE PASSING OF THE PEACE (Spoken Responsively)

LEADER: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. PEOPLE: And also with you.

(Children in K-5 are dismissed to go to Children’s Church)

THE CHORAL ANTHEM: “One Thousand Hosannas” .............................................. Joel Raney The Sanctuary Choir

~ The Word of the Lord ~

THE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION ...................................................... Brenda Brown, Liturgist

THE FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON: Matthew 21: 1-11 ............................. Brenda Brown, Liturgist

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone

says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’ This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, ‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’ The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’

THE CHORAL ANTHEM: “Behold the Lamb”.............................................. David T. Clydesdale The Sanctuary Choir

THE SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON: Philippians 2: 5-11 ........................ The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

LEADER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

THE SERMON: "Celebrating our Humbled Lord" .............................. The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore

~ We Respond to the Word ~

♦THE HYMN NO. 198: “Ride On! Ride On in Majesty” ............................................. arr. Mallory

♦THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Spoken in Unison) .. Excerpts From A Brief Statement of Faith, Ch. 4.3

Jesus was God in the flesh. Jesus overthrew evil powers that enslaved and degraded people, yet he made no use of power to protect himself. He healed those who were sick in body and mind, yet he did not avoid pain and suffering for himself. He commanded his followers to place loyalty to him above loyalty to family and country, yet he lived among them as a servant. Jesus taught with authority, challenging many time-honored customs and ideas, yet he submitted to humiliation and death without a word on his own behalf.

THE PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD'S PRAYER (Spoken in Unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

THE OFFERING OF GIFTS ............................................................ Jean Basnight, Greeting Elder

THE PIANO/ORGAN OFFERTORY: “God So Loved the World” .................... arr. Smith/Hustad Jason Evans & Cheryl Needham

♦THE DOXOLOGY NO. 606 .............................................................................................. OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

♦THE PRAYER OF DEDICATION .................................................. Jean Basnight, Greeting Elder

~ We Go Forth in Jesus’ Name ~

♦THE HYMN OF SENDING NO. 223: “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” .......... arr. Mallory

♦THE CHARGE & BENEDICTION

♦THE CLOSING RESPONSE: "At the Name of Jesus” ............................................... Cindy Berry The Sanctuary Choir & Congregation

At the name of Jesus, at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow in heaven and in earth. At the name of Jesus, at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow in heaven and in earth. That every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! That every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! At the name of Jesus! At the name of Jesus!

The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore will be preaching from Matthew 28: 1-10. Through the witness of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, Matthew tells us about the event that changed the course of human history: not even the grave can keep Jesus captive. The resurrected Christ appears to his amazed followers on the third day after his crucifixion. Jesus’ victory shows us that God is stronger than even death!

Don’t forget to bring a flower for our wire cross!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church. Our Church exists to worship God in Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament; to join others to know the joy of God’s forgiveness in Jesus Christ; to grow under the Lordship of Christ and to serve Christ’s world in His name. We invite you to share with us our trust in Jesus Christ and to join us as we strive to:

❖ Grow and strengthen our FAITH,

❖ Love and support our FAMILY,

❖ Reach out to our FRIENDS in need.

We encourage you to read “Sue’s Story,” the inspiration behind these goals in its entirety, on our website, on a brochure in the Gathering Space or on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. We hope you will be inspired as we have been.

At OBPC, we recognize all of our visitors as God’s children, united as brothers and sisters in Christ. We hope our service inspires you and strengthens your faith. We hope you will join us again in celebration and worship to God. If you are interested in becoming a member or would like to know more about our church or any of our programs, please contact us!

Our church believes providing worship for visitors is a vital part of our mission. Our building was planned to accommodate the many visitors who come to this vacation community. This places an additional financial challenge on our resident membership. We need and welcome financial support from our visitors.
