The Outer Banks Hospital Development CouncilThe Outer Banks Hospital Development Council is comprised of dedicated individuals who serve as fundraisers and advocates of the hospital and of our work across the Outer Banks community. All of the council members are engaged in programs such as our community benefit grants and the community health needs assessment, while also playing a vital role in the fundraising efforts that support programs, services and equipment for our hospital.

The Development Council’s largest fundraiser will reach a milestone in February 2020, with the 15th Annual Hospital Gala taking place on Feb. 8. For more than 15 years, community businesses and individuals have sponsored the gala and raised more than $2.2 million!

At the 2019 gala, a new-to-us fundraising concept was introduced when we asked all of the guests to take their seats and listen to a short program that featured President Ronnie Sloan, FACHE, Cancer Center Campaign Co-Chairs Tess Judge and Cindy Thornsvard (also gala chair), hospital administrator Amy Montgomery, and Development Director Jennifer Schwartzenberg. The remarks focused on several recent achievements of our accredited cancer services program and the promising future of that service line. Emotional stories were shared by both Amy and Jennifer followed by ‘Fund the Mission’. In a matter of seven minutes, several gala guests stepped up and made contributions to directly support a future cancer center on the Outer Banks…and $50,000 was raised!

The generosity of our gala donors has enabled the Development Council to support a variety of leading-edge programs and equipment that allow our friends, neighbors and family members to receive the care they need close to home and on the Outer Banks. Since its inception, programs funded by the Development Council include:

• More than 2,000 free screening mammograms for individuals without coverage to pay for the service• The Health Coach, our mobile medical unit, providing free health screenings and training for health coaches • Lymphedema therapy training and certification for our rehabilitation therapists • Scalp cooling therapy for cancer patients preventing complete hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment • Construction of a chemotherapy mixing room and our Cancer Resource Center for patients and family members • Healing Garden at the Radiation Therapy Center • Underwriting the cost for programs such as Look Good, Feel Better, chair yoga, art therapy, and Cancer Transitions • State-of-the-art equipment including: mammography, ultrasound, stereotactic breast biopsy, and blood analysis

The Health Coach makes nearly 50 appearances across the Outer Banks community each year providing free wellness screens, skin checks, cancer screenings, and flu vaccines.

Funds from the annual Development Council Gala supported the healing garden at the new Radiation Therapy Center.
