www.ColumbiaCottage.com This may be one of the shortest versus in the Bible, but it is glowing with divine Light. As a young boy, I lived to sit at the kitchen table listening to my grandmother talk with her neighbor while they were baking breads for the upcoming Church gatherings. I remember them always shouting aloud this small but powerful verse when talking about the local events. Today, given the chaos of the pandemic, this verse is truly needed as God crafted us with the ability to choose Joy during every moment of our life. When our minds begin to go down an unpleasant and gloomy path, I encourage you to stop it in its tracks by reciting this powerful command. It is important not only to be joyful but to think about specific reasons for rejoicing. They can be as simple as daily provisions – food, shelter, and clothing. For many of us, relationships with loved ones can be a rich source of Joy. The important thing to remember is that these joyful thoughts will light up both your mind and your heart, enabling you to find more pleasure in your life. It has been said that choosing to rejoice will bless you and those around you. God Bless and Be Safe, -Jim Ruth graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Reading Hospital School of Nursing in 1942 and is a Life Member of the school’s Alumnae Association. She kept her professional nursing license active through 1983 even though for the most part she devoted her time to being wife to Esh and mother to her children, Gail, Neil, Scott and Gary. Her dance classes as a high school student did not go without notice as many times in the morning while making breakfast she would humor her children with a few minutes of her tap dance routine to ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’ one of her favorite dance recital numbers. In addition to caring for her husband and children, Ruth volunteered as Treasurer of the PTA and member of the Montrose Manor Civic League. Later in life, she volunteered at Topton to assist residents select Christmas gifts for family members and together for over 40 years she and her husband delivered Meals-on-Wheels. Her favorite hobby was gardening, both for pleasure and practicality. She enjoyed picking flowers from her garden to make bouquets for the table but would also work assiduously to prepare vegetables for freezing. She still enjoys going to gardens and commenting in wonder on the diversification of Mother Nature’s flora. However, the greatest love of her life was her husband, Esh who was by her side until last year. She enjoyed his devotion and companionship for over 76 years during which time they traveled extensively, mostly throughout the United States. She especially enjoyed visiting National Parks, which she feels are places that every American should visit. Later, cruises to Bermuda, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Panama Canal provided opportunities to continue their enjoyment of other places. While the celebration of Ruth’s 100th birthday will be somewhat subdued, know that her 4 children and their spouses, 3 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren will make sure her birthday is a happy one!
