To use the ExpertMeter instead of thebar graph signal strength meter, you mustselect MeterExp in Preferences (seepages 14-16). RedLines ExpertMeter simultaneouslytracks up to 8 radar signal s. It providesdetailed information on up to (2) Ka-band,(2) K-band, and (4) X-band signals. ExpertMeter can help you spot achange in your normal drivingenvironment; for example, a traffic radarunit being operated in an area wherethere are normally other signals present. ExpertMeter is actually a miniaturespectrum analyzer. It shows what bandeach signal is on and its relative signalstrength.

    Interpreting Alerts

Although RedLine has a comprehensivewarning system and this handbookis as complete as we can make it, onlyexperience will teach you what toexpect from your RedLine and how tointerpret what it tells you. The specifictype of radar being used, the type of

transmission (continuous or instant-on)and the location of the radar source affectsthe radar aler ts you receive. The following examples will give youan introduction to understandingRedLines warning system for radar, laserand safety alerts.

    Explanation

You are approaching a continuous radar

    source aimed in your direction.

An instant-on radar source is being usedahead of you and out of your view.

An instant-on radar source or laser source isbeing used nearby. This kind of alertrequires immediate attention!

Laser is being used in the a rea. Because laseris inherently difficult to detect, any laseralert may indicate a source very close by.

A moving patrol car with continuous radar isovertaking you from behind. Because thesesignals are reflected (reflections areincreased by large objects), they may or maynot eventually melt into a solid point even

when the patrol car is directly behind you.

You are approaching a radar unit concealedby a hill or an obstructed curve.

    Alert

RedLine begins to sound slowly, then the

rate of alert increases. The Signal Meterramps accordingly.

RedLine emits short alerts for a few secondsand then falls silent only to briefly alert andfall silent again.

RedLine suddenly sounds a continuous tonefor the appropriate band received. Allsegments in the Signal Strength Meter aredisplayed.

    A brief laser alert.

RedLine receives weak signals. These signalsmay be a little stronger as you pass large, roadside objects. The signals increase infrequency.

RedLine alerts slowly for awhile and thenabruptly jumps to a strong alert.

    Alert

RedLine alerts intermittently. Rate andstrength of alerts may be consistent or

    wildly.

    Radar POP Laser

How Radar WorksTraffic radar, which consists ofmicrowaves, travels in straight linesand is easily reflected by objects such ascars, trucks, even guardrails andoverpasses. Radar works by directing itsmicrowave beam down the road. As your

vehicle travels into range, the microwavebeam bounces off your car, and the radarantenna looks for the reflections. Usingthe Doppler Principle, the radar

equipment then calculates your speed bycomparing the frequency of the reflectionof your car to the original frequency of thebeam sent out. Traffic radar has limitations, the mostsignificant of these being that it typicallycan monitor only one target at a time. Ifthere is more than one vehicle withinrange, it is up to the radar operator todecide which target is producing thestrongest reflection. Since the strengthof the reflection is affected by both thesize of the vehicle and its proximity to theantenna, it is difficult for the radar

operator to determine if the signal is froma sports car nearby or a semi-truck severalhundred feet away. Radar range also depends on thepower of the radar equipment itself. Thestrength of the radar units beamdiminishes with distance. The farther theradar has to travel, the less energy it hasfor speed detection.

Because intrusion alarms and motionsensors often operate on the samefrequency as X-Band radar, your RedLine

will occasionally receive non-police radarsignals. Since these X-Band transmittersare usually contained inside of a building,or aimed toward the ground, they willgenerally produce much weaker readingsthan will a tr ue radar encounter. As youbecome familiar with the sources of thesepseudo alarms in your daily driving, they

will serve as confirmation that yourRedLines radar detection abilities are fullyoperational.

How POP WorksPOP mode is a relatively new feature forradar manufacturers. It works bytransmitting an extremely short burst(approximately half a second) within theallocated band, to identify speeding

vehicles in traffic. Once the target isidentified, or POPPED, the gun is thenturned to its normal operating mode toprovide a vehicle tracking history,

    (required by law).

How Laser (Lidar) WorksLaser speed detection is actually LID(Light Detection and Ranging). LIDAguns project a beam of invisible infralight. The signal is a series of very shinfrared light energy pulses, which min a straight line, reflecting off your cand returning to the gun. LIDAR usethese light pulses to measure the disto a vehicle. Speed is then calculatedmeasuring how quickly these pulses

reflected given the known speed of lLIDAR (or laser) is a newer

technology and is not as widespreadconventional radar, therefore, you mencounter laser on a daily basis. Andunlike radar detection, laser detectionot prone to false alarms. Because LItransmits a much narrower beam thadoes radar, it is much more accurate ability to distinguish between targetis also more difficult to detect.AS ARESULT, EVEN THE BRIEFEST LA

TSR Signal Ranking SoftwareYour radar detector includes a newoptional boost in anti-falsing software toeliminate excessive alerts from erroneous

X and K-band sources. One example ofthis is traffic flow monitoring systems. These systems, which are becoming morewidely used in several countries, generateK-band signals to measure the flow oftraffic on a given road. Unfortunately mostdetectors see this as a real threat and will

alert you to it unnecessarily. Our newproprietary software (TSR), intelligentlysorts, ranks and rejects this type of falsealarm automatically. The result is ultimateprotection without excessive false a larms. The TSR software is set up as anoption and can be activated through theProgramming section. We suggest youturn TSR on if you are experiencingextreme false alerts in your area. If not, your detector is ready to start protectingyou right out of the box. If you have any questions about thisnew feature, please give us a call or visit

    our website for more details

    SWS

How SWS WorksSafety Warning System, or SWS, uses amodified K-band radar signal. The SWSsafety radar system has 64 possiblemessages (60 currently allocated). TheSWS messages your RedLine can displayare listed on the facing page. From the factory, your RedLine isprogrammed with SWS decoding ON. IfSWS is used in your area, your RedLine

    will display the safety messages

associated with the signal. If you do notwish to detect this system, use thePreferences feature to turn RedLines SWSdecoding OFF. NOTE: Some of the safetymessages have been condensed, sothat each message can be displayedon one or two screens on RedLineseight-character display.

Since Safety radar technology isrelatively new, and the number oftransmitters in operation is not yet

widespread, you will not receive Safetysignals on a daily basis. Do not be

surprised if you encounter emergencyvehicles, road hazards and railroadcrossings that are unequipped with thesetransmitters. As Safety transmittersbecome more prevalent (the number ofoperating transmitters is growing everyday), these Safety radar signals willbecome more common.
