Our Story_We moved to the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds from the South of England and have never looked back. The rolling hills and unspoilt countryside, with its close proximity to the historic city of York, has kept us enchanted with the area since our arrival.
With the help of my father, family and friends we carefully planned and built Wolds Edge. Our adventure began with Mill Pond Lodge in 2005, which is situated beside the newly restored pond where a wildlife haven now flourishes.
In 2010 we bought the small piece of land, known as Wolds Edge and in 2011 began carefully and lovingly designing the site around the existing planting and topography. All our accommodation, some named after the local dales, has been built ensuring it compliments the environment and natural surroundings, using locally sourced materials. Our vision and enthusiasm has enabled us to transform this small rural field into a national award winning collection of luxury self catering accommodation.
Deepdale and Fairydale were the first lodges we built and the rest of the site has gradually evolved to meet demand. Our love of the area has moulded Wolds Edge into this wonderful setting of seven individual lodges, two Snug Huts and our Treehouse.
Our aim is to create a peaceful, sustainable holiday location where you can explore the culture, coast and countryside or just relax and unwind.
We wish you a wonderful stay.
Best wishes Ruth and the Team

Bishop Wilton and the Local Area_WOLDS EDGE IS PERFECTLY SITUATED FOR GETTING OUT AND ABOUT. YOU CAN VISIT THE HISTORIC CITY OF YORK, ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL YORKSHIRE COASTLINE AND EXPLORE THE WONDERFUL COUNTRYSIDE.
Bishop Wilton village is considered by some to be one of the prettiest villages in East Yorkshire and lies at the foot of the beautiful and unspoilt Yorkshire Wolds. There is a good pub that serves food and a local community shop within walking distance. Through the centre of the village runs a lovely shallow beck, this is flanked on both sides by open grass verges that serve as a habitat for endangered wildlife including water voles, toads and newts.
In the Domesday Book, Bishop Wilton was simply referred to as Wilton. The Bishop prefix was in use by 1428, as the ‘Manor of Wilton’ was owned by the Archbishop of York. It was once home to the Archbishop of York’s palace, which the local history group believes to have been built in the time of Walter De Grey, who was Archbishop from 1216-1255.

Our local medieval church, St Edith’s is dedicated to Edith of Wilton. The church was restored in 1858-59 and was designated a Grade 1 listed building in January 1967. Beautiful carved stonework outside is matched by interior decoration, including a Roman-style mosaic floor fashioned after one at the Vatican and installed in the church by Italian workers in the 1800s. The floor was delivered in sections to Fangfoss station and brought by cart to the village.
North of the village lies Bishop Wilton Wold, known as Garrowby Hill, which is the highest point in the Yorkshire Wolds and inspired the artist David Hockney, to create this stunning landscape painting.
The area is popular with walkers and cyclist and there are a number of footpaths (including the Chalkland Way and Minter Way) on our doorstep or simply wander along one of the many local routes. You can also access a number of local and national bike rides from Wolds Edge, where you can cycle along quite country lanes that criss-cross the rolling chalk hills and enjoy wonderful views, wildlife, historic places and pretty villages.

Remember the Countryside CodeFull leaflet in the back
1. Keep dogs under close control but remember – if a farm animal chases you, it’s much safer to let your dog off the lead.
2. Stay informed on where and when you can walk in your area. Some areas of land are restricted if work is being carried out and during wildlife breeding seasons.
3. Leave gates as you find them and if you’re in a group, make sure the last person knows how to leave the gate.
4. You should always stick to paths if possible but this is especially important in a field where crops are growing.
5. Use gates and stiles where possible, to avoid damaging fences and hedges.
6. Leave livestock alone, even if an animal appears to be in distress. In this case, contact the farmer.
7. Litter isn’t just dangerous to wildlife, dumping rubbish is a criminal offence.
8. Give farm animals plenty of space, especially if they are with their young.
9. By law, dogs must be on short leads in most areas of open country between March 1st and July 31st (to help protect nesting birds), and at all times near farm animals.
10. Farmers are entitled to destroy a dog that injures or worries their animals – unless you completely trust your dog, keep it on a lead around livestock.
11. Clean up dog mess. Make sure your dog is wormed regularly and take faeces back to the nearest bin.
12. By law, cyclists must give way to walkers and horse riders on bridleways.
13. Busy traffic on small country roads can be unpleasant and dangerous to local people, visitors and wildlife – slow down for walkers, cyclists and horses.

FEEDING THE BIRDS IN WINTER
Help us to keep the wild birds full in winter. Please help yourself to the free bird fat balls from out side the welcome room. These can be used to fill the bird feeders around the lodges.
Since the beginning of this project we have seen a huge increase in the birdlife at Wolds Edge. In 2016 the bird boxes at Deepdale and Fairytale lodge each offered a safe nest for Blue Tit’s families, we watched the chicks hatch and grow on the bird box cameras.
