A Message from Father Paul

Happy Easter to all! On behalf of all of us here at the Basilica – Father Sam, Father Romulus, Seminarian Denning Achidi, Deacon Michael, myself and our rectory staff – a blessed and holy Easter. May all the blessing of this season be yours.

Services like those of Holy Week and Easter do not happen without the cooperation of so many people. I am deeply grateful to our liturgical ministers (Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Music Ministry, Altar Servers, and Ushers), as well as our sacristans and maintenance staff, for all their hard work in making our High Holy Days so beautiful. A special word of thanks to those who helped decorate the Basilica so beautifully for Holy Week and Easter.

Thank you to all those who sent greetings and goodies to the rectory for Easter. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.

We are always happy to welcome pilgrims and visitors to the Basilica. So many choose to celebrate Holy Week and Easter with us (as well as other occasions). We pray God’s blessings on them in this Easter Season and hope they return often to pray with us.

Congratulations to the six new members of our church who were baptized or brought into the Catholic Church here at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. They have been working with our parish Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) team, under the guidance of Father Sam and our seminarian Denning Achidi for the past several months to get ready for church membership. Elizabeth Davison and Lillionna Rae Cooper received the Sacrament of Baptism. Chelsea Gibson, Jessica Knowles, Laura Shannon and Jason Stranz were received into full communion in the Catholic Church, and all of them received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Vigil. We welcome them warmly to the Catholic Church and to our parish. They were among the 150,000+ adults who entered the Catholic Church in the United States this year on Holy Saturday.

Bishop Malone has lifted the restrictions on receiving the Precious Blood at communion time, as well as shaking hands at the Sign of Peace. You will remember that he asked us to suspend these two things during the height of the flu season. He lifted these restrictions beginning on Palm Sunday. He asked, however, if anyone is not feeling well, that they refrain from these two actions until they feel better. Thanks for your cooperation with this.

Congratulations to Kevin Thompson, our Altar Server of the Year. Kevin, who has been an Altar Server here at the Basilica for several years, received his award from Bishop Malone at a special Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral on March 24. Kevin is an outstanding and hardworking server, always willing to take on extra responsibilities, to help other servers, and to help the priests. Congratulations to Kevin. He deserves this honor, and we are proud of him and grateful for his help.

The Monday after Easter is Dyngus Day. Father Romulus will celebrate a special Dyngus Day Mass that day at 12:10 p.m. (our regular 12:10 p.m. Mass). All are welcome to attend.

May Jesus, our Savior bless you and may Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Easter Sunday of the

Resurrection of the Lord

On Easter morning everything—the spring weather, the flowers, birds and butterflies, the people around us in their finery, the beautiful liturgy and music—everything seems to bear witness that Jesus Christ is risen today! Like the eyewitness accounts in today’s scriptures, the glorious and joyful life all around us helps us to believe the good news of the Resurrection and sing “Alleluia!”

In the scriptures today we hear from Peter and Paul and John. All three speak with conviction about witnessing the resurrected Christ. John’s Gospel account includes Mary of Magdala, who also was privileged to witness the Resurrection and tell others the good news. On this glorious Easter Sunday can we ourselves give eyewitness accounts that Jesus Christ is risen today, alive and active in our lives? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Updates Wanted

Did you move? Are you moving soon? Did your phone number change? Are you new to the parish and not registered? Are your envelopes not coming to your home? Do you have any changes in your family status? Are you a newlywed planning to remain in the parish?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, please call the rectory (828-9444) and help us to update our records. Often mail is returned to us because of an incorrect address and this is costly to the parish.

Also, be sure to use your envelopes so that we can give you proper credit for your participation and financial support. This is important for your year end income tax preparation and also so that we can provide you with a letter of recommendation if you are asked to be a sponsor.

Thank you for your help in keeping our parish records accurate!

Mass for Anyone Touched by Adoption
