From Father Simon:

As a parish community, on these last two weekends we celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist. They are sacred signs through which Christ gives his divine life to us. As I had mentioned last week in the bulletin, Bishop Perry anointed 94 of our teenagers with sacred Chrism, and Christ himself strengthens them and gives them the gifts of his Holy Spirit. Yesterday, 125 of our second graders received the Eucharist, the gift of Christ Himself, for the first time. I want to thank their parents, grandparents, godparents, sponsors, teachers and all who have helped make this day special for our children.

In about two weeks, we will gather as a community, under a majestic white tent, on a sprawling green field, to celebrate the spirit of community that binds us together; to give thanks to God for bringing us together as one family; to remember and thank all those generous benefactors who have sustained this great parish in the past and who continue to support it in the present and to raise funds to support the many ministries and activities of the parish that are essential to our vitality for generations to come. The UPP, the United Parish Program, is our one and only fundraiser. The UPP aims to bring together the many and varied organizations in the parish to work as one toward a common goal: to build up the body of Christ and to care for and support the sacramental, educational and ministerial needs of the members. It is therefore vital that every member of the parish community participates in this united endeavor. So I appeal to every family in the parish – and we have 3000 families – to join in and participate and support the UPP. There are many ways to participate other than simply buying a ticket and attending. You could be a sponsor, take out an advertisement in the event booklet, offer an item for auction, buy some raffle tickets, or help one of the many committees preparing for the event. Our goal is to raise $275,000 in order to be able to continue to support the parish activities. That’s a lot of money, but we can do it with the participation and support of every single family in the parish. You can even donate online. In addition, we are working to expedite the opening of a STEM lab in our school by August, 2017. In order to give our children the benefit of the STEM lab as soon as possible, I encourage you to Raise the Paddle to support this project. A STEM lab is an innovative way to help prepare our students for high school, college and future careers. I am deeply grateful to Patti Braasch and Laura Honda, who are coordinating this year’s Field of Dreams, and the many volunteers on different committees who are working hard make this day memorable and successful. Through their hard work and your generosity and support we will be able to achieve this goal. I look forward to seeing you on May 19, on our Field of Dreams! Ceiling Update: As we have mentioned over the last month, an unexpected issue with the Basilica ceiling has forced us to replace the entire ceiling, based on the recommendations of various

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?

REASON 66

In a society and culture that values personal freedom almost to the point of making it an absolute, obedience to legitimate authority can constitute quite a challenge. From a very young age, children experiment with disobeying their parents. Adults often disobey customs and laws because they interfere with their personal preferences, conveniences or choices. But responsible people know that legitimate authority should be obeyed because in the end such order preserves and promotes the common good. The Church is an example of such a legitimate authority. It has articulated precepts or rules to guarantee that the faithful participate at least minimally in the life of the Church. There are five Precepts of the Church, the first of which is: “You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.” The Church requires obedience to this precept – not only because it is one of God’s own laws set forth in the Ten Commandments – but because obedience to it is the bare minimum expectation for a member of the Body of Christ.

engineering and construction experts. This very major project will begin Monday, May 8 and will probably extend into November. The project will involve erecting a scaffold roughly 60 feet up, at the point where the walls end and the ceiling begins, from the front communion railings back to the vestibule and covering the entire nave. From there the work will take place to remove the existing ceiling tiles and to install a replacement. Although we will continue to have our normal liturgies (Masses, funerals, weddings), we will close the Basilica during weekday hours (other than the Mother’s Chapel) so that the work can be accomplished as quickly and safely as possible. We regret the inconvenience and the visual impact on our liturgies, but firmly believe this is the right way to proceed. We will keep the parish informed throughout the entire project. Fr. Simon Braganza

Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together

4th Sunday of Easter—May 7, 2017

Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure,

in response to the great gifts God has given us.

“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ…” - ACTS 2:38 The word “repent” means to turn from sin, to change our actions. When it comes to change, do we take responsi-bility for change or do we think that others have to change instead? Change that is permanent comes from within, we must take control and be disciplined. Remember though that we are not alone, Jesus is there to help lighten the load.

Stewardship of our Parish Facilities - The Basilica Ceiling As we have mentioned several times over the last month, an unexpected issue with the Basilica ceiling has forced us to replace the entire ceiling, based on the recommendations of various engineering and construction experts. This very major project will begin Monday, May 8 and will probably extend into November. The project will involve erecting a scaffold roughly 60 feet up, at the point where the walls end and the ceiling begins, covering the entire nave from the front communion railings back to the vestibule. From there the work will take place to remove the existing ceiling, comprised of several thousand 12 inch by 12 inch acoustic tiles, and to install a modern replacement which will nevertheless look identical to the original ceiling. Although we will continue to have our normal liturgies (Masses, funerals, weddings), we will close the Basilica during other hours (other than the Mother’s Chapel) so that the work can be accomplished as quickly and safely as possible. We regret the inconvenience and the visual impact on our liturgies, but firmly believe this is the right way to proceed. We will keep the parish informed throughout the entire project.

Our Capital Campaign: how to fulfill your pledge

The best way to fulfill your pledge is to use the self addressed envelope included with

your periodic pledge reminders:

Archdiocese of Chicago Gift Processing PO Box 7256

Kensington CT 06037-7256

A favor—if instead you decide to drop your pay-ment into the collection basket,

please use a plain envelope clearly marked “CAPITAL CAMPAIGN”

and use your capital campaign account number (not your envelope number)

on your check.

Our parish needs our help especially now.

We realize that our parish’s calls for our help seems never to take a break.

Right now we are asking for participation in our United Parish Program (UPP) as we prepare for our May 19 gala, Field of Dreams. This is our single parish-wide fundraiser and we depend on the proceeds of this event to meet out budgeted operating costs for the year. This year’s event prom-ises to be yet another fine social and financial success!

At the same time we are beginning to ask our parishioners to consider an increase in their Sunday offering to pay for the cost of our very recently announced Basilica ceiling project, which is an unexpected and very sig-nificant need, and is on top of our already successful capital campaign To Teach Who Christ Is.

Throughout the wonderful history of our parish there has been an uninter-rupted series of very positive responses to calls for support. We know that the challenges we face today will be met with the same success that our predecessors in this parish achieved!

Thank you for all you do for our parish!

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.

The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.
