Please join us in prayer for :
3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church January 26, 2020
From the Pastor:
I’ve been thinking a lot about something Bishop Whalen said at Fr. John Dwyer’s funeral Mass. He said that we are really a parish as it should be. I think of that a lot when I see people at our Monday adoration coming in and out or staying for long stretches of time. First Fri-days, too.
I think this when I see the sacrifices parents, vol-unteers, and staff make to ensure we have a healthy Re-ligious Education program for our children. I think of this when I see the joy of our parish children playing CYO and helping one another out. And I certainly think about this when it comes to what a loss it is that we do not have Fr. John here with us anymore. We take consolation in the faith that he is with us in a new way, we pray. He really reminded us of the importance of family and our parents and grandparents.
Some of us are realizing we are approaching the elder status now and it’s humbling. We all owe one an-other our love and our prayers and a generosity of spirit that guarantees that no one suffers alone, because we all know how much suffering there can be in life, as we love one another and pray for one another and walk with one another in our trials.
Today’s Gospel reminds us once again that we never know our final hour, whatever our age. Can we pray together this week about how we might each be more light in the world and as a parish?
With love and prayers,
Fr. Francis

3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church January 26, 2020
Dear Members of the Parish Family of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart:
As Rev. Msgr. Edward Whalen was sharing his final thoughts at the
conclusion of Fr. John’s Funeral Mass he commented that Cardinal Dolan had
told him that he was not simply coming to a parish to pray for a pastor – but
rather that he was coming to a family. In that moment, he was struck by
how very true the Cardinal’s words were.
We, all of us, are Fr. John Dwyer’s family and the events which took
place in the days after his passing on January 12, were filled with evidence of
how a loving family comes together to honor, celebrate, grieve, laugh and hold each other close.
With two exceptions, to even begin to try to individually acknowledge everyone who took part in those days,
in ways large and small, would be an impossible task – and one probably doomed to fail because someone would be
forgotten. Instead we hope that you find yourself in the list below. Know that however you were able to participate
was a gift to both Fr. John as well as to our parish family in modeling to anyone who looked on how a community
grounded in love cares for its members.
We are grateful to:
Fr. Francis for the loving care and respect he modeled through Fr. John’s last illness and his comforting leader-
ship through a difficult week.
Warner/Wozniak Funeral Home for attending to every detail with professionalism and care
The Oratorian Fathers
Several long time parishioners/friends who filled Fr. John’s last days with kindness and company
Parish Office and Facilities staff
Members of the Music Ministry
The dozens of priest brothers of Fr. John who concelebrated the Vigil and Funeral Masses
Readers and Altar servers
Rosary Altar Society
Ushers
Tappan Fire Dept. volunteers
Orangetown Police Dept.
The many volunteers who served as greeters throughout the wake
Carl A. Schelin Post #1271 American Legion
The many volunteers who organized, baked and served at the repast following the funeral
All those who attended the wake, Vigil Mass and/or Funeral Mass and escorted Fr. John to the cemetery
Photo contributors and creator of the beautiful video.
All those who called just asking if there was any help needed
The monetary donations we received, in lieu of flowers at Fr. John’s request, will be used for Masses for him as well as for needs in his beloved Parish home.
May God continue to keep Fr. John and his beloved Parish family in His loving care always.
