My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

P S H W J S T

O L L . L H T S T ; the days of Lent have all been leading up to the celebra on of the Triduum, the three days when we focus intently on the mystery of our salva on won for us by the saving passion, death and resurrec on of Jesus Christ. But this Sunday we begin Holy Week with the observance of the Passion, Palm Sunday. Each year we gather to hear the Passion proclaimed on this day and we hold alo palm branches with which we acclaim Christ as our Redeemer. Just as the Lord asked his disciples at the hour of his agony in the garden, he asks us to draw close to him: “Remain here and keep watch with me” (Ma hew 26:38). This Holy Week can be a me of renewal for our faith and a hope that we become ever closer to the Lord in friendship.

H W S T : G . This is the me when we are invited to walk with the Lord

and share the divine life that the Paschal Mystery promises us. These are the most important and vital days in the liturgical year. With the celebra on of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion we step through the door into Holy Week; these are seven days that commemorate the central mysteries of our faith in Jesus Christ, and three of those days are the center of everything in our lives of faith: The Sacred Triduum.

T J C , , . These are the days to seek closer friendship with the Lord and to recognize

our need to be connected to Christ’s body, the Church. The first reading for the Mass of Palm Sunday is from the Prophet Isaiah; in this reading, Isaiah reflects upon the voca on to be a prophet that has been given to him by God: “Morning a er morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back” (Isaiah 50:4-5). As we come towards the end of Lent we are reminded that our journey towards conversion does not end with the conclusion of this season of grace. Rather, the work of being converted to the Lord, pu ng aside selfishness and self-centeredness, living for others, and in fidelity to the Gospel requires a willingness to open our hearts “morning a er morning” to hear the voice of God, let go of those things that hinder our growth in rela onship with God and find our joy in the light of the Risen Christ.

D H W , S T – H T , G F , H S , . It is a privilege to be able to take part in the liturgies of Holy Week and I encourage you to take part in them. The celebra ons of Holy Week are an opportunity to step back from the ordinary events of our lives, important as they are in their own right, and reflect upon the path that we walk with the Lord Jesus each day.

T P S , L : “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord” (Luke 19:38). On Holy Thursday when we celebrate the

Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper we find ourselves in the upper room with the Lord and his disciples, we reverence the gi of the Eucharist, thank God for the gi of the priesthood, and recommit ourselves to be faithful servants of the one who washes the feet of his disciples; as John’s Gospel tells us that the Lord gave this as a command: “If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do” (13:14-15).

O G F L P L C . The beau ful message and language of the Prophet Isaiah

turns our minds eye to the suffering servant who died to make us whole: “Yet it was our infirmi es that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smi en by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chas sement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed” (53:4-5).

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

O H S , I R S , G ’ , . We

can sing with the Israelites of long ago: “My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. He is my God, I praise him; the God of my father, I extol him” (Exodus 15:2). These are very special days and celebra ons, please join us. Giving your me to the Lord, the most precious gi that we have, will help to renew your hearts and make you joyful in the celebra on of Easter morning. These celebra ons help us to view our lives in the light of the risen Christ who gives us the gi of eternal life.

T H W . I , , L , , and recommit ourselves to following him. Please don’t let the opportunity to walk

with the Lord Jesus during the Sacred Triduum, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday pass by without taking advantage of God’s word and sacrament that is celebrated in the liturgy. Please take part in the liturgies of Holy Week, I know that you will be moved by them and your faith will be strengthened by the experience. Our Holy Week and Easter Schedule may be found on the front of the bulle n.

T H W , M L ’ S H T , the liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, and the Great Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night are the

most beau ful liturgies of the church year. I know that if you take part in one or all of these liturgies you will never experience Holy Week and Easter in the same way again. These liturgies help us to really understand what we mean when we proclaim in every Eucharist, the “Mystery of faith.” The liturgies of the Sacred Triduum help us to open our hearts to the gi of God’s life that is given to us as a gi through the saving passion, death, and resurrec on from the dead of Jesus Christ our Lord. Join us!

Please pray for priests in a special way on Monday of Holy Week as they gather with the Bishop to concelebrate this Mass; please pray that we are all worthy servants of the Lord and never grow indifferent to the gi of the priesthood and the promises made to the Lord at the me of our ordina on.

The poet Robert Frost wrote: “The sun was warm but the wind was chill. You know how it is with an April day.” Spring will be here by the me that this le er is published. I write on the first full day of spring and the ground is covered with snow and ice. Winter’s par ng word for this year! It has been a harsh winter and the promise of spring is one that we are all ready to embrace. But the early days of spring are illusive and tenta ve. But the warmer weather and the hope it brings will arrive. In order to help us with the heavy cost of hea ng these massive buildings and the costs of snow removal and frequent sal ng of the parking lot we will take second collec ons on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday to assist in this effort. Thank you so much for your great generosity that helps to sustain our parish. We depend upon our collec ons from Easter in order to meet our parish budget. In order to make up for all of the weekend collec ons that were heavily impacted by winter storms, I ask you to please be as generous as possible. Thank you.

E F M

Those who would like to remember deceased loved ones through the Easter flowers that will decorate the church please use the envelopes at the entrance to the church and return them as soon as possible. Please clearly print the names of deceased loved ones on the envelopes so that they may be added to our book of remembrance.

P L M

Please remember to use all of the spaces in the parking lot! Especially at this me of year with the busyness of Holy Week and Easter, there is not a space to waste! Please remember to use all of the spaces near the elevator building. When all of the spaces are not u lized, many who need to park there because of an inability to walk great distances suffer as a result. Thank you!

Stations of the Cross & Adoration with Benediction

Each Friday evening of Lent we will have Stations of the Cross followed by Eucharistic adoration with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 7:30 in the church. Please take some time to make a

Faith Formation Corner

Attention 2nd Grade Parents: As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together shall begin on Sunday, February 25, 2018 and continue through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.

These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 AM mass together are as follows:

4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29

We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with:

Fr. English Food Pans Please support the Fr. English Center and support a family or two by making a meal for them to enjoy. Food pans and recipes are available during each confirmation session. All pans should be clearly marked with the meal that it contains and they should be brought back to the next month’s confirmation session FROZEN.

Altar Servers This is an important ministry for our parish and your support and involvement once per month is needed! We are in need of servers at all weekend masses. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming an altar server.

Lectors Readers Wanted! We are in need of lectors to read once per month during one of our liturgies. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming a lector.

Our Music Ministry Needs You! Join us in our Adult and Children’s Choirs as we share our love for the Lord and praise Him through music. For more information, contact Stella at 973-256-5200 x-23 or talk to her after mass.

Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence

The Lenten regulations concerning fast and abstinence are as follows:

The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty - All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) extends from the First Sunday of Lent to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.
