The Twenty-third Psalm, today’s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms.
The line that reads “Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side/with
your rod and your staff / that give me courage” (Psalm 23:4) connects this week’s scriptures to the
wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good
Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper
relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment
of our baptism, carries with it
the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I came so that they might
have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25). Gospel — The shepherd leads the sheep out into pastures of abundant life (John 10:1-10).

Month 8: Thank You from your Spiritually Adopted Baby:
Now I am finishing my development and concentrating on gaining weight. I am probably starting to make my mother uncomfortable with my size. For some time now I have recognized my mother’s voice. In a short time, I will be born. On behalf of mom and me, thank you for your prayers for the past eight months. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to make the right choices.
"The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord." —Cor. 15:56-58

May is the Month of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mary’s life on Earth was dedicated to bringing the Savior to humanity. Now that she is in Heaven, she continues to bring our concerns to her Son. Praying the “Hail Mary” is a wonderful way to honor our Heavenly Mother. Hail Mary, full of grace: Conceived without Original Sin, Mary’s will and intellect were predisposed to holiness. Grace helped her to live a difficult life without sinning. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women: Mary was honored to be chosen as Jesus’ mother. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus: Mary know how great Jesus would be but she also knew what the prophets wrote about how he would suffer and die.
As his mother, she wanted to share his joy and his sorrow. Holy Mary, Mother of God: Mary loved her child even more than most parents because he was her Lord and Savior, too. Pray for us sinners. When Jesus took his last breaths on the Cross, Mary’s job of being Mother of the Savior broadened to becoming Mother of the world. Now she cares for us. Now and at the hour of death. On Earth, Mary brought her Son to us. Now she brings us to the heart of her Son. She prays for us always because that is what a mother does. Amen.

Mary, the perfect model for all parents Although Mary was the mother of Jesus, her life was difficult and her suffering
was great. That is why she understands our struggles and sympathizes with
our petitions to her. She is the perfect model for all parents.
Mary’s priorities shifted the moment the angel told her she was to bear the
Son of God (Luke 1:28-35). It did not matter that she was not yet married or
that people would talk. What mattered was that a little life was now her
responsibility. She had to respond.
Imagine the fear Mary felt when Herod issued a death sentence for Jesus
(Matthew 2:13-15). Without questioning God’s instructions, Mary and Joseph fled, leaving everything
behind, to ensure the safety of their son.
Raising any child is hard but to be responsible for the Savior must have been overwhelming at times.
When Jesus was 12, he was lost for three days until they found him in the temple (Luke 2:41-49). It
made sense later, but at the time Mary grieved and blamed herself.
As a mother of the Savior, Mary knew her child would suffer and that is the most difficult part of
parenting. Being prepared did not make it any easier to watch her son die. But Mary had complete
trust in God. That makes her the perfect model for all parents.

Wor ld Day of P rayer fo r Vocat ions—SUNDAY, MAY 3
Today the Holy Father has asked all Catholic to intercede for vocations.
Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the
priesthood and religious life?
—Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both
living and dead.
—Keep our parish priests and deacons in prayer throughout the week.
—Encourage your children or grandchildren to consider a vocation as a priest or
religious brother or sister.
Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE DIOCESE OF WHEEL ING-CHARLESTON As Governor Justice has begun to announce plans to gradually re-open businesses and entities in our state, the chancery is working to develop a process and norms to safely reopen our churches and resume the public celebration of the Mass. More information will be shared with all of you as plans continue to be refined. Please note Bishop Brennan’s April 24, 2020 letter to all priests wherein he stated: “I must be clear that I want the closure of our churches and suspension of Masses with a congregation to continue until I give the green light to open the church doors again and receive our people.” Please know of my prayers for all of you during this challenging time.

The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that
anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto
thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
