The Way of Faith: A New Bulletin Feature Ever since I first arrived at Mount Carmel, I have wanted to write a weekly article for the bulletin, and the time has finally come. My hope is to provide some weekly reflections on different aspects of our Catholic faith, as a way of helping to explore more deeply how we worship, what we believe, and who we are as the people of God. More often than not, the focus will be on deepen- ing our experience of the holy sacrifice of the Mass, and on explor- ing the whole life of prayer and practice that flows from the Eucharist, "the source and summit of our faith." The earliest Christians were known as "followers of The Way," recognizing that being Christian means embracing a whole way of life rooted entirely in Christ. And so I have decided to name this feature "The Way of Faith." Since their ordination to the permanent diaconate a few weeks ago, we are now blessed to have three deacons assigned to our parish. They are already serving our parish in many ways, but their most public role will be serving at the weekend Masses: we are now able to have a deacon at each Mass, which is a great gift. With their ordination, deacons are given the specific responsibility of serving at Mass in three ways: proclaiming the Gospel (and sometimes preaching); offering the Prayers of the People; and assisting with preparing the altar for the consecration. As you may have noticed, now that we have a deacon at every weekend Mass, we have made a few adjustments to the Mass to allow the deacons to fulfill their ordained roles. The assistance of the dea- cons now also allows us to cleanse the vessels at the altar immedi- ately after the conclusion of communion, in line with general church practice. Cleansing the vessels at the altar is a reminder of how infinitely valuable the sacred Body and Blood of Christ are, as we take care to make sure that not the least particle is uninten- tionally discarded in a disrespectful way. Our worship of the God who loves us is the very center of our lives, as we make our own "sacrifice of praise" in joyful thanksgiv- ing for the salvation we know in and through Jesus Christ. I look forward to exploring together our life of worship, and all that flows from it, in the months and years ahead. Fr. John David PARISH STAFF EXTENSIONS
